January 6th, 2017
12:15 pm - So, 2017 I'm still here. 2017 hasn't totally personally sucked yet. And no, universe, do not take that as a challenge, I'm still working on getting back on my feet from last year, thanks.
I don't plan to migrate to Dreamwidth (see destina's reasons to essentially see mine), but I do have an account over there. I'll hit the backup button after I post this, just so things are up to date. I'll probably also start finally checking it regularly if a significant number of you aren't going to be cross-posting anymore.
For real, though, I'm mostly on Tumblr, but not in an "actively posting thoughts (except sometimes in the tags)" sort of way. Mostly in a "yay pretty fun" way, with tumblr savior and blacklisting helping to keep things that way as much as possible. May actually have the space and mental wherewithal to do more active posting this year, though, there and here. That'd be nice. I should also find more of you on Twitter via my fannish account.
Anyway, let me know where you plan to root, or have rooted already. I'd love to get at least a bit back more to normal this year.

08:04 pm - Dear Yuletide Author - 2015 [placeholder until I get myself together, and if that doesn't happen before assignments go, I will be back, I'll have provided most of what I want for these fandoms in my signup, but feel free to look at my past letters for general likes/dislikes]

09:11 pm I fail at basically every form of interaction except in-person and tumblr. Sometimes I fail at those.
For anything past pretty-happy-fuzzy things, I never have any idea where to start (2015 continues to be shit piled upon crap, I continue to try to not be buried by it), so I keep not starting.
( I did manage to capture a moon )
And I am not ready for Yuletide, wow.

06:55 pm - this has not been my favorite week ever One reason: Bang up your knees good and proper in an almost-eating-concrete fall, and then go home to a cat who is happiest on cold nights lying on your legs.
I didn't let her last night, and she was not happy with me. Now I've given in tonight. Every time she adjusts, I hold my breath until I know she's settled again on another spot that doesn't hurt as long as she's not moving.

07:54 pm Slooooowly catching up with TV. A few more episodes of Agent Carter happened yesterday. And apparently I was the one person in the room who didn't see a certain thing coming (or hadn't seen the ep already).
( Bet you can guess what when I say 'Episode 4' )
Overall, still very much enjoying it as a show, and absolutely LOVING Hayley Atwell as Peggy and as a person.

07:07 pm - Fic for A Picture is Worth 1000 Words I started this shortly after I got the picfor1000 assignment, but finishing fic is not my strong point, these days. So woo, posted. And within the challenge deadline, too.

06:57 pm - hair update Because everything else is HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT OUR SNOW?
I think I have found the answer to my hair styling needs. At least when it is mostly below freezing and dry as a bone outside. We'll see how it does in the middle of summer. But in the meantime, while I wish the answer had been something from a drugstore, here's what I've found works (for me):
Alterna Bamboo Style Super-Natural Curl Shaping and Defining Cream
PLUS
Living Proof Amp² Instant Texture Volumizer
First when towel-dried, second when mostly dry. Fortunately, each requires only a small amount and has only a slight scent that disappears quickly. Hair is as non-frizzy, non-crunchy and well-behaved as possible. Woohoo.

01:09 pm - I am going through SO MUCH tea Snow snow snow. And repeat.
But the good news - tonight is the first night of the Westminster Kennel Club show. Dogs! I don't think I've ever agreed with a winner (and obviously I don't know what the judges know re: this dog vs. the breed standard), but that's not the point. The point is DOGS.

10:13 am - ugh ugh ugh It is, to absolutely no one's surprise, snowing again. I have honestly reached the point where I'm just laughing somewhat hysterically and saying, "WHY NOT LET'S BREAK ALL THE RECORDS MAKE IT HAPPEN."
By stocking the bird feeder, I can confidently say that I have a pair of cardinals, two pairs of doves, a ton of nuthatches, and a metrick fuckton of sparrows. I can less confidently say that I have a hawk, or at least something large and swoopy and not a crow or raven, that makes the little guys bug out. I wondered, since I'd noticed before that they disappeared sometimes. About 15 minutes ago I actually I saw the maybe-hawk and wow, yeah, that's definitely a reason to decide to be elsewhere for a while.
Lost power this morning for about an hour. If I'd stayed asleep longer, or just caught up with podcasts while in bed without suddenly decided to google something that came up in one of the podcasts, I probably wouldn't have noticed until I got up and saw my microwave and stove clocks blinking. Let's not do that again.
Worst tweet ever?

10:13 pm - if I'm going to get snowed on, might as well start with a smile Well. That was exciting. And stressful. And exciting.
Also, what the hell was with all the dad commercials, kill me now.

10:18 am - Festivids! I'm skipping around (and wow, there are a lot of fandoms I know nothing about this year), but here are some vids that I've enjoyed so far. I might be back with more tomorrow.
Know Today - The Brain Scoop - Short, sweet, Emily, science!
Clu-oops! - Clue (1985) - In case you've ever wondered "Could this movie get funnier?"
Us Against The World - RPF - Soccer (German NT) - Sports. This is what happens.
Take Your Guess - Sports Night - Oh, Danny.
Au Port - The Triplets of Belleville (2003) - Gorgeous use of the movie and the music (so long as I don't think too hard about the lyrics).
Storm Song - Twister (1996) - It really is Jo's story.

10:49 am - bits and bobs Still no verified success on the hair products front. A possible, but I want to play with it for a while. Thank goodness for CVS and Walgreens return policies.
~
It hit me the other day that I never posted my Yuletide stories. It is now the last day of January, so let's make that happen while I'm still in the month when people do that.
* Truths Too Dear - The Musketeers (2014) - My assigned story, a foray into a pairing that I hadn't really examined until the prompt.
* The Life That's On Your Path - The Mummy Series - My Madness story, because it needed to be written, on several levels.
~
If you're a cat owner who has ever thought about getting one of those pet water fountains, I can now say, "DO IT."
Tigger has always sometimes done the cat thing of wishing she could drink from the bathroom or kitchen tap, but she started doing it so regularly that I was worried what she was doing when I wasn't home. Well, Tigger LOVES this thing. To the point that the first day I had it out, she sort of didn't eat. Which worried me on a whole new level, of course, but that settled out within a few days. Total thumbs up from me.
~
I made myself chai a few nights ago, and because it was the first time I'd done so in a while, I did it wrong. The tea came out fine, but I forgot that I have a Chai Diffuser (really capitalized only in my head) to compensate for its power to take over a non-metal diffuser for at least three uses past the original steeping.
I am now drinking slightly chai-tastic assam tea. It's not bad, but...maybe I should put a note on the chai tin.
~
TV. It exists. I have not watched it. I should do that.
~
I do not want another foot of snow on Monday. Never mind the shoveling; we're already missing at least one lane from every street, including those that only have one lane. We cannot afford to lose more!
(I understand why every city/town lifted their parking bans after the storm stopped. They needed to not have lifted the parking bans.)

11:03 am - how to hold a shovel with a smile We did indeed get A LOT of snow. That's okay. Cold cold cold = light and fluffy snow. That's why there's so much of it. But the upside is that it's not as painful to move.
My laissez faire attitude also brought to you by our landlord's fix-it guy coming by an hour ago (while I was trying to decide when to attempt said moving) with a snowblower.
If we do get hit again on Sunday night, like they're thinking we might, it doesn't sound like it's going to be the light and fluffy stuff. Taking my wins when and where I can.

09:40 pm - sorry, need to whine Why do products that work on my hair keep getting discontinued? I couldn't find my usual in the store this weekend, and subsequently discovered that it's now only available for three times the usual price through an Amazon seller. Whyyyyy?
Curly, kind of fine hair. Just needs to be not frizzy, not crunchy, not weighed down, not stinky. We really must have the technology.
So far, my first attempt at an alternative didn't do a damn thing except be in my hair. Good job on that, Product A.
The second actually gave me all-day wonderfulness in the hair appearance department, but I spent the first three or so hours feeling vaguely nauseous from the smell. Ugh. Not worth it.
Third attempt found today, will see how it fares tomorrow. I just honestly don't understand why this is so hard.

11:20 am - today is exclamation point day OMG. I got almost 14,000 words of Rivers of London case fic (Fifty silver bells and nine), AND also someone wrote me a Miss Fisher's Murder Mystery treat (Accompaniment). They are both so totally exactly what I wanted. Happiness!
Other happiness: my recipient and others like the story I wrote, yay! There's also a Madness story waiting for me apparently, eeee!
I've started going through the rest of the archive and have found some lovely other stories, too. Maye I'll share later. Tea is necessary now, though.

04:09 pm Went to my first Market Basket today. A new one opened up nearby just after Thanksgiving, and even though there are at least two other grocery stores I could hit more easily, I needed something else out that way. Also, I've been putting off doing ANY kind of shopping that involves an actual store, because crazy people, and thus I am out of just about EVERYTHING. So I figured, well, since everyone's opinion re: Market Basket is "always crowded," why not hit it for the first time on maybe one of the craziest days, so every other day looks relative normal.
I don't know. I survived. It's new and shiny, gigantic, and arranged very strangely. I have food and tissues again, woo.
As long as I'm here, I also have to say that Yuletide being run not on Eastern Time is messing with me more than I thought it would. I never really realized how much, in my usual life, we're the center of the time-keeping world. I also did in fact tag the bit on the end of my gift story that I wasn't sure would happen, yay. I did not get to any of the treats that I wanted to do, though. Oh well.
For anyone who's traveling, I hope the trip is or has been easy. My holiday is ending now as the sun sets, but if yours is about to start, may it be a fantastic one.

01:09 pm - hey look, another update Yuletide story posted.
I feel like there is more, and if it comes before reveal, I will go in and edit. What I wrote of the more is not necessary to the story; it's just another "I like this kind of thing!" from my recipient's letter that I could toss in there. Kind of an epilogue. But what I wrote of it so far is not fully pleasing me, so out it came. We'll see if it finds its way back, in better shape.
Only two days of work next week. And while I don't hate having days off, every year it just bugs me. I could get things done! These are just a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to me! But I have explicitly been told not to. So.
A question that I guess I could ask Google, but I'm here -- how long does it take before vegetable oil goes bad? I would have thought several years, but what I had (which I'm pretty sure I bought last year) made my latkes taste funny the first time I made them, so I went out and bought more oil.
They think it's going to snow on us tonight. Par for the course for Revels, I guess.

10:19 pm - Dear Yuletide Writer - UPDATED Thank you, writer, for offering to write a thing!
(and yes, if you're here in 2017, I've pointed you at a letter from 2014 - honestly, nothing has changed in terms of what I like and don't like, and it seems silly to copy-paste)
( more info here )
To close things out, thank you again!

09:35 pm - I love the future Apparently this is the few months of new technology. New laptop, and now new Tivo. Damn, the basic Roamio is adorable. Also, I knew it came with built-in Netflix and Youtube, but OMG IT COMES WITH BUILT-IN NETFLIX AND YOUTUBE. This is awesome. Screw tv, internet on my tv, wheee!
Which is really good for real right now, because apparently I now need a cable card to get tv. So that'll happen tomorrow, since the nearest office happens to be right down the street from the posh-suburb rummage sale I'm planning to hit.
