yunitsa: Sexby and Angelica from The Devil's Whore; 17th c. woman in dark cloak with man in hat behind her (Default)
I am moving to Oxford tomorrow and getting over a bout of pneumonia, and it's Person of Interest that has left me feeling NOT OKAY.

Noooooooo.
yunitsa: text: "an amiable young woman & famous for reading Greek while other people were hunting" (austen - amiable young woman)
So after dithering and dithering until the last moment, I didn't sign up for Yuletide -- I think for the first time in, what, seven years? It's not like there was nothing I could have written - just browsing vaguely through the letters, I ended up composing several stories in my head - but actually writing something down for an assignment felt like it would be just one more stressful addition to the massive to-do list. It's making me sad, though - another thing I used to enjoy taken away. Maybe I'll try to write some treats or pick up a pinch hit or something.

Last weekend I went to Bath with my gang of old university friends, which was absolutely lovely (we stayed at a grand old house in the middle of town and cooked nice food and went to the spa), but having those three days off meant I had to work frantically the week before and the week after to compensate and now I still don't feel like I've caught up. Today did manage to write a particularly thorny job application that I'd unwisely left until the last minute and to clean the flat, neither of which I wanted to do, so there's that. Plan for tomorrow is to go in early to finalise my essay marking and run errands, and then come home for lunch and reread Richard III and Frankenstein for my classes this week, though given how terrible I am at mornings (even with the extra hour), I suspect it may be a very late lunch. And now I am off to guilt-watch Downton Abbey.

(Oh, and also I was at the Welcome to Night Vale live show on Thursday! It was awesome, though some of the other live shows they've done must have been even more amazing to experience. And in other news, still continue to love Person of Interest to an unreasonable extent apparently unshared by the rest of the Internet, or at least the corner of it I'm aware of.)

Person of Interest was back this week, and I don't even know what's wrong with the Internet that it took me so long to realise that was the case. I had hoped so much to finish the Restoration AU -- the one I started over a year ago -- before the new series, but that was clearly never going to happen with the way things are going. (I'm even iffy on Yuletide this year.) But! I love this show so so much!

spoilers are playing by the rules )

Is there fic? Why has everyone stopped talking about this show and writing good fic for me to read :(

(Also back? Downton Abbey. Let us never speak of this again.)

Posting somewhat belatedly to say !!!! over the Person of Interest finale, which was amazing and nearly everything I could have asked for. You can see me emote at [personal profile] hedda62 a bit here, as well as by flailing and reblogging lots of gifs over at my Tumblr.

I also wrote a tiny ficlet in response, because I had to, okay.

Drive-by Person of Interest thought: I really wish I had time to vid right now, because I desperate want a John Reese vid to exist to this song. I heard it randomly in the car this afternoon and it struck me, and then I listened again with the lyrics and it was even more perfect, Batman movie and all.

(Just watched the new episode this evening; thought it was actually really good, but still not reconciled to the Thing That Happened.)

Beginning of a Finch/Reese fic found while looking for something else - this was supposed to be a kink-meme fill, which I think I broke off when I couldn't think of anywhere original to go with it. Still, for whoever it might amuse...

Not at First Sight )

I still very much want to finish the Restoration AU, but it requires research and plot and I really wish I'd been able to push ahead with it while those still seemed like surmountable obstacles.

Off on strike today, so after the rally I went and got my flu shot (Ow. Nurse agreed I'd been very brave but wouldn't give me a sticker), and then curled up with a cup of tea and watched Person of Interest )

In other news, I made my friend Neil promise to join me for THOR 2 this evening, because it has been out for over 24 hours and I still haven't seen it, so fingers crossed he texts me soon. And then next week I can go and see it again :D :D

ETA: Thorring at 8! I did have to mention that my arm really, really hurts.

OH SHOW YOU ARE BACK :D

Recently finished: Lexicon by Max Berry. Fast-paced, well-executed thriller with some excellent ideas about the power of language -- I didn't know they still did those in the post-Dan Brown era.

Currently reading: Blood of Tyrants by [livejournal.com profile] naominovik. This whole series is just such a pleasure -- it's terribly rare, these days, that I just want to sit down with a book and keep reading it indefinitely. And there are things in this one that are making me very happy, including one particular moment where I had to put the book down to do a little flappy-hands dance of feelings, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's a pity that this is the next-to-last in the series, but I'm very much looking forward to how it all turns out.

In other news, I've just sent what I hope is the final draft of the PhD to my supervisor, after having revised the entire thing within the last month, so really it's flappy-hands dances of feelings all around.

ETA for a Person of Interest vid rec: go and watch this perfect Root character study, go now.

A while ago, I recommended Person of Interest to a friend of mine, with some incoherent flapping of hands. She was initially unimpressed:

Her: I can't say that Person of Interest is that much better than Vampire Diaries lol don't know what I think of all this vigilante violence...

Me: As I said, you do have to give it a while! You reach episode 10 and suddenly, feelings.

Then last night, at some point after 1 a.m., I get another text:

Ok, episode 10: feelings

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful bromance...

Title: New York, New York
Fandom: Person of Interest
Song: Anna Ternheim (originally by Frank Sinatra)
Length: 2.50 minutes
Download: sendspace (.mp4, 100MB)
Summary: I want to be a part of it: John Reese, Harold Finch, the Machine, the city.

Note: This started as a fairly intellectual exercise in metonymy (synecdoche?), but, as you can see, this plan did not long survive an encounter with John's face.
I'm not sure how well this would work as a recruiter vid - not well, I suspect - but for those of you already sucked into this glorious show, my feelings, let me show you them. Feedback highly welcomed :)

I was just going to watch a few minutes over lunch and then finish it later, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Person of Interest reactions OMG OMG )

After hanging out with L. and her tiny baby yesterday, it occurs to me that the emotional range of the final-year PhD student is much like the emotional range of your average four-month-old. Happy! Sleepy! Grumpy! Hungry! Smiley! Crying! Hungry! Sleepy! Not sure if like (which is basically his default state)!

The day before, at yet another cafe, I was trying to pimp Person of Interest to a fannish friend. Her, following my entirely accurate description: So are they a couple? Me: No, they just fight crime.

And speaking of PoI, new episode! Spoilers want to find out who murdered them. )
yunitsa: Sexby and Angelica from The Devil's Whore; 17th c. woman in dark cloak with man in hat behind her (tdw sexby angelica)
On my way home just now I bought a large round of brie, melted it in the oven, and ate it with a spoon. So that's how my day's gone. (It continues to be ridiculously cold and snowy, there are far too many things that need to get done, and today I agreed to cover a class for a colleague who didn't tell me anything about what he'd assigned them, so there I was trying to discuss the political context of Paradise Lost with people who'd only read books 1, 7, and 9.)

But I would like instead to talk about shiny things! The first of which is my shiny new computer, which I got in advance of my birthday next month. It's a Samsung 7 Chronos and it's basically a Mercedes compared to the Oldsmobile that is my current Dell, and I just love it so much. I could vid on it! If I'm very disciplined about dissertation writing, after mid-April, I might attempt that Person of Interest idea I've got rattling around in my head.

Also, my friend Neil twisted my arm to go to the cinema last night when I should have been marking, and we saw Welcome to the Punch. I had wanted to see it because it has so many brilliant actors -- James MacAvoy, Andrea Riseborough, Mark Strong, David Morrissey -- and That Trope I Like about former nemeses having to work together. (Is there a TV Tropes name for that? No, don't tell me.) And, well... all of those things are certainly true, but it is not a good film.

slightly spoilery thoughts about Welcome to the Punch, not that you can really spoil this movie, it goes exactly how you think it will )

And now I will huddle with my shiny computer and my cat and try to get warm, and not do any more work tonight. Only new PoI would make my idyll complete...

First of all, two recs:

Slash Report covers Person of Interest with both hilariousness and extreme accuracy. Baby in a giant hat! Rival billionaires! What more do you need!

My lovely Yuletide writer just added an epilogue to their Temeraire story that includes "Northwest Passage" scored for Tharkay's hand-carved flute and humming dragons, plus a recording of same! It's pretty awesome.

In other news, a friend of mine came to stay overnight, so I had almost a normal-person weekend where I only worked until 4:30 on Saturday and after 4:30 on Sunday, and in between did things like dinner and pub and fry-up breakfast and Sunday roast. It was great! Then I had a series of terrible anxiety dreams this morning and was almost late for teaching (IN THE SNOW BECAUSE IT IS SNOWING) but there you are.

Just a little something I wrote for myself last night, as a bedtime story - shamelessly fluffy, and only slightly more romantic than the episode itself, I swear to God. They are being so good to us. Also, I've felt for ages that this fandom needed curtainfic, and this was the closest I could get.

Incidentally, the culture of this fandom on AO3 seems to be for kudos to the exclusion of comments, which makes me a bit sad - I always enjoy getting the kudos in my mailbox, but this is my first time regularly writing fic in ages, and I've fallen so in love with this show that I'd love to have someone actually talk to me about it. But just the fact that I'm writing a bit is nice.
yunitsa: Sexby and Angelica from The Devil's Whore; 17th c. woman in dark cloak with man in hat behind her (tdw sexby angelica)
I'm having a rather unsuccessful day - a rather horrible week to be honest -- so over lunch I couldn't resist catching just the very beginning of the new Person of Interest, which has been the one thing I've been looking forward to, despite suspecting that after all the Big Emotions of the series opening, it would settle back to procedural business as usual this week.

How wrong I was. IN THE FIRST MINUTES. SO MANY FEELINGS.

spoilery flailing )

Also, there's this video interview with the whole cast, which is bound to cheer anyone up. "I hope this goes viral, for your sake."

And now back to work.
yunitsa: Catherine from Northanger Abbey, gasps while reading book in bed with a single candle (northanger abbey)
The funny thing is, I had already (in my pre-bedtime moments) been scribbling bits of a story with fairy-tale motifs and this title, long before I had caught up with the show. And then the beginning of season two was about Finch being gone, and Reese demanding from everyone he came across whether they could help him find his friend. So obviously I had to finish this.
