Program Notes

During a small portion of the long secular history of the present village of Mafra, Portugal, it was occupied by the Moors for about 436 years. It is curious that few traces of this occupation remain. In this fantasy for wind orchestra, two central themes are explored, which despite originating from an imaginary folklore, could, from a personal perspective, “be” from a moment in the history of this village. They are also heard at another moment in its existence as a mourisca, an ancient dance originating from North Africa and its peoples. Mahfara is its Arabic name.
