Golden rule, motherfucker.— Lucy

Lucy MacLean is a character in the Fallout Television Series.

Background[edit]

Lucy is a vault dweller in Vault 33. She is the daughter of Overseer Hank MacLean and Rose MacLean and sister of Norm. Her cousin is Chet. She is a member of the Gymnastics Club, Fencing Team, and Young Pipefitter's Association.[Ext 1] She also partakes in martial arts and riflery. She enjoys watching films such as The Man From Deadhorse with her father, and engaging in a family book club.[2]

When Lucy was young her mother discovered the existence of life on the surface, and took her and Norm to Shady Sands. They were followed by Hank, who took the children back to Vault 33, destroying Shady Sands with a nuclear device and ghoulifying Rose in the process. As an adult, Lucy retains memories of her time on the surface, but mistakenly believes they occurred within Vault 33's farm.[3]

By Episode[edit]

S1E1 - The End

Beneath the surface of California, in Vault 33, one of three interconnected Vaults, Lucy MacLean, the daughter of Overseer Hank MacLean, sits in front of the Vault 33 Council, consisting of Betty Pearson, Reg McPhee and Woody Thomas. Since Lucy has been unable to find a suitable spouse in Vault 33, she applies for marriage as part of the Triennial Trade with Vault 32, and gas her application approved.

While Lucy's best friend, Stephanie Harper, helps her to prepare for the arranged marriage, the rest of the Vault prepares the location for the upcoming festivities. Lucy then meets up with her father, and the two speak about marriage and how they both wish that Lucy's mother Rose would be with them. Hank, Lucy, her brother Norm and a delegation of Vault 33 then proceed to the door connecting their Vault with Vault 32.

The meeting with the Vault 32 delegation is shortly delayed, as the Gate-Keeper, Lucy's cousin Chet who is deeply infatuated with her, pretends there is a technical malfunction. After Lucy intervenes, Chet opens the airlock and the group meets the delegation of Vault 32, led by Lee Moldaver. In exchanged for seeds and machinery parts, Vault 32 provides a "breeder" in person of Monty, Lucy's new husband.

Both groups then proceed into Vault 33 to witness the couple's wedding ceremony, followed by a banquet during which Hank MacLean holds a speech about a potential recolonization of the surface within the next couple of generations. Soon after, Monty retreats with Lucy to their new home in Room 626, were they start celebrating their wedding night in private. Lucy notices some scars on Monty's back, and intuitively steps toward a window, where she hears a woman scream. She quickly scans Monty with her Pip-Boy only to find out that he is irradiated, and correctly concludes that he and the rest of the Vault 32 delegation must be raiders from the surface. The couple then starts to fight, with Monty stabbing Lucy with a knife in the abdomen, and her shattering a blender on his head and cutting open his face with it. While Monty bleeds out on the floor, Lucy removes the knife from her body, heads to the bathroom and treats herself with a Stimpak.

Lucy, still in the wedding dress, heads toward the nearby armory, where she equips herself with a Tranq Gun and heads back to the banquet to help fight off the attacking Raiders. During the fight, Steph Harper loses her right eye by way of getting her head slammed into a fork. Norm is hiding under a table, and when discovered by a Raider, is saved by Lucy, who hides him in a small maintenance compartment. As she turns around, she encounters a disfigured Monty, who starts to strangle her. Lucy is then saved by her father, who hits Monty with a shovel and then drowns him in a wooden pickle barrel.

Hank and Lucy then proceed to the entrance to Vault 32, where they encounter several Vault 33 residents kneeling at gunpoint next to a bomb. Hank MacLean professes that he knows who Moldaver is, to which she replies "Everyone knows who I am." She then forces him to choose between the residents and his daughter. He then grabs Lucy by the hand and locks her up in a small closet, after which he is tranquilized by a Raider. With a knocked-out Hank MacLean in their midst, the Raiders then retreat back to Vault 32, with Moldaver telling the kneeling residents that they should start running, which they do. Soon after, the bomb goes off and buries the entrance to Vault 32 under rubble.

After some deliberation, Lucy decides that she will leave the Vault in search for her father. Together with Chet and Norm, she takes the elevator up to the Vault's entrance. While Norm watches the elevator, Chet proceeds to open the Vault Door. Lucy asks him to take care of Norm while she is gone, but he denies, instead wanting to accompany her. She then tranquilizes him by covertly pushing a tranq cartridge into his hand. Lucy and Norm then bid farewell to one another. As she proceeds through the opening Vault door, Davey and Reg McPhee arrive via the elevator, in a vain attempt to persuade her not to leave.

Blinded by the sun, Lucy then steps into the Wasteland. While walking through bones, petrified bodies and ruins, she catches a glimpse of the deserted coastline.

S1E2 - The Target

Lucy sets out on her journey to search for her kidnapped father, Overseer Hank MacLean. Her first encounter is with Dr. Wilzig, who warns her about the dangers of remaining idealistic and naive outside the Vault. Though their exchange is brief, it leaves Lucy unsettled.

Lucy arrives in the settlement of Filly, a fortified bartering outpost of salvaged metal and destroyed vehicles. She seeks assistance from a local merchant, Ma June, who reacts nervously upon hearing the name Moldaver, the person responsible for Lucy's father's abduction. Ma June offers limited help but warns Lucy about the dangers of pursuing Moldaver.

The Ghoul arrives and shoots Wilzig. Lucy attempts to guide Wilzig across the desert to find Moldaver, but he is dying. In his last moments, Wilzig reveals the true nature of his mission to Lucy. He has embedded sensitive technological data inside his own head, which Lucy will need to find her father. He urges Lucy to sever his head and bring the technology to Moldaver, believing it to be critical to the future of the world. After ingesting Vault-Tec Plan D cyanide, Wilzig dies, leaving Lucy the task of removing his head and continuing her journey.

Carrying Wilzig's head, Lucy walks through the wasteland on her way to Griffith Observatory. Stopping for the night, she enjoys a box of Yum Yum Deviled Eggs for dinner, before deciding to inspect Wilzig's head. While questioning what makes it so special, she is shocked by the Cold Fusion Diode that he had injected behind his ear, and decides to place a tracker up his nose. She proceeds to reminisce about the knight who saved her in Filly, wondering who he was.

Hollywood Boulevard

Lucy arrives at the flooded Hollywood Boulevard, staring in amazement at the water ahead of her. As she approaches the water's edge, she sees a small, unmutated baby deer, which she offers food. As it eats from her hand, the pair is interrupted by something growling, before the deer is dragged away by something into the water. Lucy runs to a higher location, before being ambushed and dragged away by a gulper. She manages to hit it with a tranquilizer dart, causing it to release her. It quickly grabs the bag containing Wilzig's head before fleeing into the water.

Lucy follows the creature along the coastline before losing sight of it as it dives. As she prepares to pursue it, she is interrupted by the arrival of Cooper Howard and CX404, who demand to know where Wilzig's head is, dumping the contents of her bag on the ground, including her deviled eggs. Lucy admits to having lost the head. Cooper notices a nearby pile of scat and, recognizing it, correctly surmises that the head was taken by a Gulper.

Later, as Lucy protests, Cooper Howard hooks her up to a fishing apparatus, preparing to dunk her into the waters of Hollywood Boulevard. Shoving her into the water, he lets her struggle underneath for a moment before hauling her back up. Sputtering for breath, Lucy tells Cooper that torture is wrong, causing him to laugh. He tells her that back in the day, they would do studies, and one study came out revealing that torture doesn't work. After he says this, he releases her, dunking her back in the water. Hauling her back up, he explains that despite the study's findings, torture persisted, and even increased in frequency. As he says this, he pulls a number of leeches off of Lucy, tossing one to CX404. Ignoring Lucy's pleas, Cooper reveals that he agrees with the study, causing Lucy to question why he is torturing her. Cooper responds that he isn't torturing her, and is instead using her as bait for the Gulper, before dunking her again.

While submerged, Lucy is terrified to spot the Gulper lurking in the water below her, and begins thrashing in an attempt to escape. As the Gulper attacks, it hooks itself on an anchor Cooper set to catch it, causing Cooper to haul it and Lucy out of the water. As the Gulper attacks Lucy, Cooper attempts to kill it with an improvised spear. In the commotion, Lucy throws Cooper's saddlebags into the creature's mouth, before it spits them out and eats one of her boots. The Gulper is then scared off by CX404 biting one of its hands.

Cooper recovers his saddlebags, discovering that his supply of vials has been destroyed. Angered, he points his gun at Lucy, before turning and shouting in frustration. Lucy tells Cooper that he can't treat people like this, as it violates the golden rule. Taking Lucy hostage, Cooper leads her away, telling her that the wasteland has it's own golden rule, "Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every goddamn time." When Lucy questions why they are leaving CX404 behind, Cooper responds that she isn't his.

California Crest Studios

While walking through the wasteland, Lucy and Cooper arrive at the ruins of California Crest Studios. Cooper stops briefly to take a drink of some water from his canteen, causing a dehydrated Lucy to request a drink as well. In response, Cooper pours what remains of his water on the ground before ushering her to continue moving.

As they pass a California Crest Studios Statue, Lucy realizes the Geiger Counter on her Pip-Boy is going off, indicating a high level of radiation. She then notices a puddle of stagnant, irradiated, and polluted water nearby, causing Cooper to mock her. He tells her that not much stays clean on the surface, and that she'll see. She asks him if radiation is why he is the way he is, causing him to respond, "Something like that". Lucy then notices a Vault-Tec Corporation billboard with Vault Boy on it, who then has his face shot out by Cooper.

S1E4 - The Ghouls

Lucy remains kidnapped by The Ghoul. They walk though the ruins of a filming studio, California Crest Studios, that Howard used to work before the war. After hearing sounds in a nearby building, the Westside Medical Clinic, they encounter Roger, a fellow ghoul who is in the process of going feral. The Ghoul and Roger are acquainted and speak for a short time before the Ghoul kills him in an act of mercy. Lucy is further horrified when the Ghoul begins to cut up the corpse for sustenance and then instructs her to do the same.

Back in the ruins of California, the Ghoul, weakened by withdrawal, leads Lucy to an abandoned Super-Duper Mart and trades her to organ harvesters in exchange for a month's supply of Vials. The Ghoul collapses after forcing her to enter the grocery store. Lucy encounters a Mr. Handy robot named Snip-Snip shares his intention and prepares her for surgery.

When she learns this, Lucy fights back and breaks free, commandeers Snip-Snip and confronts the organ traffickers, demanding the ghouls imprisoned here be freed. Not realizing some of them are feral, conflict breaks out and the traffickers are killed. Lucy is forced to kill a ghoul who is turning feral in self-defens. In the aftermath, Lucy rescues the weakened Ghoul by leaving behind the supply of drugs he needs before departing alone.

S1E5 - The Past

Lucy continues her journey after escaping from the organ traffickers. Still recovering from her encounter with The Ghoul, she comes across the incapacitated Maximus. Lucy is suffering from radiation sickness and agrees to help free Maximus in exchange for RadAway, a drug that will cure her. Maximus, in an effort to preserve his cover, once again identifies himself as Knight Titus when Lucy introduces herself. Lucy is familiar with power armor from her education in the vault and frees Maximus shortly before passing out due to radiation poisoning. Maximus holds up his end of the deal and administers the RadAway. Once she recovers, the two decide to stash the power armor and travel together.

As the two journey through the wasteland, Lucy asks Maximus general questions about life above ground, wishing to learn more about the world beyond the vault. Their journey leads them to a narrow bridge where they encounter a pair of strangers on the other end. A tense standoff ensues despite Lucy's attempt to broker peace. Maximus manages to shoot and kill the couple, identifying them as cannibal fiends after the fact, but suffers a bullet wound in the process. Maximus tells Lucy he is not injured seriously and the two continue forward.

The pair come upon the ruins of Shady Sands, which was once the capital of the New California Republic, a post-War nation. Lucy was brought up to believe that Vault 33's efforts were the only way civilization could begin again on the surface, and is surprised to know nations had thrived previously without them. The city is now a crater, and Maximus revealed he survived the event that led to its destruction as a child.

During this exchange, Lucy realizes that Maximus is bleeding much more than he let on, and begins to search for medical supplies. They approach Hawthorne Medical Laboratories, and Lucy rushes in ahead of Maximus to find aid. They enter a door indicating medicine can be found there, but a trap door opens beneath them, dropping them down into the basement.

Lucy and Maximus wake up in a quarantine cell and find a window, revealing they are in a sterile, intact environment that Lucy recognizes as a vault. Lucy watches the community of Vault 4 going about their daily tasks and smiles, reassuring Maximus that they are safe now since they are in a vault.

S1E6 - The Trap

Lucy and Maximus, still impersonating Brotherhood of Steel Knight Titus, are released from quarantine in Vault 4 after Maximus receives medical attention from the vault's doctors. The pair are received warmly by the community, represented by Birdie. They join the general population, enjoy a meal, accommodations, and are introduced to Overseer Benjamin. Lucy and Maximus realize that some of the inhabitants have physical mutations such as having one eye or merged fingers. Birdie explains that the vault's population is a hybrid of original residents subjected to human experimentation and surface refugees who survived the destruction of Shady Sands.

Lucy is invited to a meeting with the refugee inhabitants that is revealed to be a ritualistic, cult-like devotional to a figure known as "the Flame Mother" later revealed to be Moldaver. Lucy begins to grow suspicious of the vault's secrecy concerning their past and current religious fervor. Maximus on the other hand is unbothered by this and quickly embraces the comforts of vault life, including clean facilities, water, food, amenities, and safety.

Lucy breaks the strict instructions not to visit the 12th level of the vault, where she discovers the former experiments into human experimentation. The scientists of the past, including Vault-Tec employees Lloyd and Cassandra Hawthorne, engaged in experimental human reproduction programs in an attempt to genetically encourage resistance to radiation but instead resulted in terrifying mutations. Lucy is discovered and apprehended.

S1E7 - The Radio

Lucy remains detained in Vault 4 as Overseer Benjamin and Birdie attempt to explain the vault's original inhabitants were the ones that conducted the unethical scientific experiments. The creatures that the experiments created ended up killing the scientists and the remaining subjects living in the vault took control of the facility. As punishment for accessing the forbidden level of the vault, Lucy is sentenced to banishment from the vault, which the Vault 4 inhabitants consider a death sentence due to exposure to the surface. Lucy is surprised that Overseer Benjamin is letting her go, but Maximus misunderstands the situation and steals the vault's Fusion Core for his power armor and attacks, believing Lucy is in danger. Maximus and Lucy flee and once on the surface, Lucy convinces a reluctant Maximus to return the Fusion Core, knowing it allows the vault to survive.

S1E8 - The Beginning

With the real head of Dr. Siggi Wilzig, Lucy reaches the Griffith Observatory, now serving as a base of operations for Moldaver and the New California Republic. Moldaver is using the facility to redevelop her Cold Fusion technology and has Lucy's father, Hank MacLean, imprisoned in a cage. Lucy hands over Wilzig's head which is revealed to contain a small piece of technology needed to complete the Cold Fusion research. While this is completed, Moldaver shares with Lucy the truth about her father, that Hank was not born in a vault and confirms his role in the bombing of Shady Sands. A ghoul chained up nearby is revealed to be Rose, turned into a ghoul by her father's attack on Shady Sands in retaliation for Rose leaving the vault with Lucy and Norm. In an emotional realization, Lucy demands her father give the proprietary Vault-Tec codes to Moldaver, which is the last piece needed to activate Cold Fusion, and the reason for his abduction.

Meanwhile, the Brotherhood mounts an assault on Moldaver's fortified position, wielding heavy weaponry and small arms against the observatory. Amidst the combat, Moldaver is mortally wounded but succeeds in activating a Cold Fusion device that restores power to Los Angeles. Lucy has a tearful conversation with her father and gives her mother a merciful death. Maximus arrives and is knocked out by Hank, who steals a dead Brotherhood soldier's power armor. The Ghoul fights through and arrives to confront Hank, finally being able to ask the former Vault-Tec executive the whereabouts of his family. Without answering, Hank flees. The Ghoul encourages Lucy to leave with him before the Brotherhood shows up, and she reluctantly leaves an unconscious Maximus.

Maximus awakens to see the world beyond the observatory lit up, and hears Moldaver's last words, asking him to stop the Brotherhood from abusing Cold Fusion. Dane and the rest of the Brotherhood soldiers arrive, giving him credit for killing Moldaver and acquiring Cold Fusion for the Brotherhood, promoting him to Knight. Lucy, the Ghoul, and CX404 are then seen heading towards New Vegas in attempt to find Hank and discover what happened to the Ghoul's family.

In the Mojave Wasteland town of Novac, a group of Great Khans led by Nick the Prick occupy the Dino Dee-lite Motel. They prepare to execute a captured Cooper Howard by hanging him from the motel's Swimming Pool diving board for his crimes against the Khans. Nick announces to the crowd that Howard has been tormenting the Khans since before their ancestors were born,[4] and celebrates that a bounty hunter delivered him, declaring that they will finally "settle the score."[5]

Nick asks Cooper how he feels. Cooper responds by reminiscing about Darla, a former owner of the Dino Bite Gift Shop, from whom he purchased a soda pop 25 years earlier and whom he recalls as "reasonable."[6] Cooper states that it was nice chatting with the Khans and says he is ready to proceed with the execution. When nothing happens, he repeats himself more loudly. It is revealed that Lucy MacLean is positioned inside the mouth of Dinky the T-Rex with a rifle. Cooper looks toward her and repeats his request trying to signal Lucy, but she does not fire.[7] A Khan then drops the diving board, causing Cooper to begin hanging.

As the Khans celebrate, Lucy calls out, revealing that she turned Cooper in for the bounty money with the intention of escaping afterward.[8] She asks Nick to release Cooper to avoid violence. Nick responds by stating that whoever kills Lucy will be allowed to eat Dogmeat.[9] Lucy shoots the rope, freeing Cooper, and a firefight ensues. Lucy deliberately fires non-lethal shots, injuring Khans in the arms and legs and shooting Nick in the buttocks, causing him to flee and survive Cooper's subsequent killing of the remaining Khans. With the reward money secured, Lucy and Cooper leave Novac as Cooper treats his rope burns using a damaged Fusion Core.

As they cross the El Dorado Dry Lake, Cooper criticizes Lucy for refusing to kill and tells her that the only thing that mattered was that she shoot the rope.[10] They reach an overlook of New Vegas. Lucy remarks that the city appears unchanged from pre-war photographs. Cooper explains that most bombs targeting Vegas during the Great War were intercepted. When Lucy asks why other cities were not protected, Cooper explains that Vegas was saved specifically by Robert House shooting the bombs down.[11] Lucy suggests that Cooper's family may still be alive there, but he responds that nowhere near Robert House is safe. Lucy asks why her father would go to Vegas,[12] and Cooper sighs and leaves without responding.

Following the power armor footsteps of Hank, Lucy, and Cooper continue through the Mojave Wasteland. As they walk, Lucy questions Cooper's belief that after 200 years, his family would still be alive. The two arrive at a body, stepped in half by Hank's power armor. At the sight, Cooper remarks that Hank is always making new friends. They reach Old Woman Gretch's Soup Store. Lucy orders Flea Soup and asks about her father. Gretch scrubs their scalp with their fingers, causing fleas to fall out, and then serves it into a bowl and offers crackers to go with it. While Lucy hesitantly tastes the "soup", Gretch says Hank abducted her son. Cooper bluntly states that the son is dead,[13] which Gretch accepts. She directs them onward and demands that any caps found on her son's body are hers,[14] since the "cocksucker owed me money."[15]

As they travel, Lucy and Cooper discuss their approach. Cooper criticizes Lucy's non-lethal tactics. Lucy insists on bringing Hank to justice.[16] At the Starlight Drive-In, Lucy suggests Cooper still has hope. Cooper disputes this and criticizes her upbringing as "not real."[17] He pauses to observe a marquee advertising A Man and his Dog 3.

Dogmeat follows Hank's trail through the back of the destroyed cinema screen, discovering the entrance of Vault 24 located in the rock wall behind. After hesitation, Lucy enters.

Vault 24

>>
Main article: S2E1 - The Innovator

Lucy enters Vault 24, followed shortly by Cooper. She comments that she has never seen a vault in disrepair like 24 before, with Cooper responding that, in his experience, it is "par for the course". Lucy questions if he has gone into many vaults, and when he says he has, she remarks that he must like them. Cooper responds by telling her that every time he enters a vault, he has to come to terms with the fact that he might discover what happened to his family, alive, dead, or worse. Lucy tells him that she knows about the Vault experiments, mentioning having been to Vault 4. Cooper tells her that Vault 4 is the best-case scenario. When Lucy says that it's weirder than the one she comes from, Cooper asks, "How many towns did they destroy down in Vault 4?"

Cooper grabs her arm, dragging her to the Vault's control panel and ordering her to open the elevator, which she does. Cooper mentions that Hank has already left the Vault, stating his curiosity about what brought him here in the first place. After picking up an Ushanka Hat with a red star and tossing it to Lucy, the pair descend the elevator deeper into the Vault.

Lucy and Cooper explore Vault 24 and discover rooms filled with corpses. They find individuals dressed in red beneath a Chinese Flag, some bearing Black Box devices. Lucy realizes the occupants were Americans that were subjected to forced ideological conditioning.[18] She discovers Hank removed the DV-ARCH DRIVE.

They follow a trail of Sugar Bomb cereal to another room and discover Gretch's son restrained. He refers to Lucy as Sugar Bomb and repeatedly tells her to go home,[19] shortly after which his head explodes. Cooper retrieves the Black Box and agrees with Lucy that Hank must be stopped.

S2E2 - The Golden Rule

The Past

Vault 33

In Vault 33, a younger Hank MacLean washes his hands in the bathroom. Lucy asks Hank to come read to them[20]. He leaves to read The Wind in the Willows to his children, Lucy and Norm, as his Pip-Boy notifies him; "Detonation Successful."

The Present

Mojave Wasteland

As Lucy MacLean, Cooper Howard, and Dogmeat walk through the desert, Lucy takes a sip of water. Howard extends his hand and bluntly demands "water", causing Lucy to hesitate. In response, Howard abruptly snatches the canteen from her hand and begins drinking. Lucy questions if he was always this rude, stating that if they find his missing family, they might not like the man he has become. Cooper does not respond and continues walking as Lucy begins telling him about kindness and the works of Charles Dickens.

As Lucy tells Cooper about a story by Dickens involving three ghosts, the pair pass by Affordable Al's Discount Hospital. Suddenly, a cry for help sounds from inside the hospital. The two briefly argue about stopping to help, with Howard arguing that they should keep moving while Lucy wants to stop and help. Lucy begins heading inside the hospital, with Howard following behind.

Following the cries for help, Howard and Lucy arrive at the hospital's kitchen where they discover an injured man and woman. Seeing the pair wearing tunics, Cooper recognizes them as being associated with Caesar's Legion, remarking that they're "awful far west". When Lucy goes to give the woman a Stimpak, Howard protests, telling her that it would be a waste of resources and "Folks in them outfits don't deserve savin'." His attention is then drawn to the man, whom he offers to help stand up. Instead, Howard slits the man's throat and begins eating him. He begins approaching the woman, with Lucy protesting, telling him to leave her alone. Howard then begins to gag, spitting out what he had just eaten, and returns to the man, discovering a poisoned wound on his back.

Howard draws his gun as the sound of skittering begins around them. The injured woman whispers, "They're back", as Lucy sees a claw appear in an overhead vent. Suddenly, a baby Radscorpion drops down next to her, pouncing onto her face. A second one leaps from a pot onto Howard, who wrestles it off and shoots it, and another. Lucy wrestles the one on her off, smashing it with a pan. Suddenly, the barricaded doors begin to buckle as something large slams against them, and Dogmeat flees. The doors are slammed open, revealing an adult Radscorpion. The scorpion attacks Cooper, as Lucy continues to protect herself and the injured woman from the babies. To protect himself from the scorpion's stinger, Cooper grabs the woman and uses her to block an attack, getting her severely stung in the process. As Lucy pulls her away from him, the scorpion stings him in the leg. The scorpion climbs on top of Howard, beginning to snap at his face with its mouth. Reaching into his bag, he pulls out a Frag Grenade. Pulling the pin with his teeth, he shoves the grenade into the scorpion's mouth, before kicking it off before it explodes.

Now with both the woman and Howard injured, Lucy must choose who to give her only stimpak to as both beg. After hesitating, she administers it to the woman, arguing that she'll survive without it, whereas Cooper won't. Lucy tells the woman that she'll get her home to her people, as Cooper remarks, "Golden Rule, motherfucker". This causes Lucy to respond that the golden rule only applies to people and that he is disgusting and cruel. As she leaves with the woman, she tells Cooper that she'll come back for him, but that she is leaving him to think about the consequences of his actions. As she and the woman leave, Lucy tells her not to worry about him and that he'll be fine, with the woman responding that she wasn't worried.

Walking through a forest, Lucy compliments the woman on her outfit, with her responding by thanking Lucy in Latin. Lucy congratulates her on knowing the language, saying that, as a schoolteacher, education is important to her. The woman responds by telling Lucy she is a kind profligate, to which Lucy thanks her. Lucy tells her that she is going to New Vegas, with the woman responding that she should instead go home, as she doesn't want to see her sexually assaulted. Lucy tells her that she'll bear that in mind. Their gazes are drawn up a hill as Lucy stops walking. Upon the hill, several soldiers of Caesar's Legion watch the two holding torches. Lucy looks around, discovering that the woman has disappeared, and continues walking. Lucy arrives at a dilapidated structure bearing a banner of The Legion. She is quickly surrounded by several Legionaries, whom she informs that she is actually very nice.

S2E3 - The Profligate

>>
Main article: S2E3 - The Profligate

A captured Lucy MacLean enters the fort alongside the Wounded Woman she had rescued from Radscorpions, being led by a Centurion. They pass by several slaves being tortured and Legionaries training before arriving at Caesar's Tent. Inside, the Centurion is greeted by the Lacerta Legate. He observes that the wounded slave has lost her legionary, before ordering the centurion to kill her, which he proceeds to do as she pleads.

Lucy is brought before Caesar, who is busy planning with the Legion Senior Advisor. When Lucy attempts to introduce herself, the Legate chastises her for addressing the great Caesar. Lucy questions the pronunciation, stating that Kaisers were German while the Legion has a Roman theme. Because of this, she states that she believes it should be pronounced with a soft c. The advisor, legate, and Caesar begin speaking amongst themselves, and when interrupted by Lucy, the legate explains that they are negotiating the rights to her prima noctis. Lucy strongly objects, chastising the men and pointing out that the concept of prima noctis isn't even a Roman tradition and instead originates from the Middle Ages.

Lucy is bound with ropes and led from the tent. After she criticizes the Legion, the Legate tells her that he wouldn't expect a profligate like her to understand, and says that the Legion is at war. When asked with whom, he lists the New California Republic, Great Khans, and Brotherhood of Steel, but says that first they must conquer another faction of Caesar's Legion, motioning to a small hill and another Legion camp beyond. Lucy observes someone on the other side of the hill being hailed as Caesar, and questions why there are two. The Legate explains that the founder of the Legion, the true Caesar, perished on the hill. In his pocket is a note naming his successor, but conflict over who gets to read the note has fractured the Legion. Every time the Legate's side attempts to retrieve it, they are attacked by the other group. Lucy offers her counseling skills, believing she may be able to help the Legion reunify.

Lucy is crucified overlooking the Legion camp. She argues with the Legate, telling him that they aren't in Rome, but rather America. Lucy criticizes the Legion's worldview, stating that based on her movie experiences, if they believe everyone else to be evil, they likely themselves are evil. The legate responds that in history, good does not matter, as there is only strength. He turns and leaves as Lucy struggles against her binds.

As a now weak and dehydrated Lucy hangs on the cross, she watches as Cooper walks past her into Caesar's tent. Inside the tent, Cooper approaches Caesar and greets him. After taking jabs at the Legion's pronunciation of Caesar, Cooper offers to give them the location of the New California Republic camp in exchange for Lucy being freed, which they accept.

Lucy is cut down from the cross and helped up by Cooper.

Caesar rallies his men, telling them that tonight they will finally destroy the NCR. As Cooper and Lucy walk past the cheering legionaries, Cooper notices several barrels of Dynamite.

Outside The Fort, Lucy thanks Cooper for saving her, with him responding to not thank him yet.

Cooper holds the commemorative lighter in his hand, musing that maybe what he just did was a mistake. Lucy questions him about what he did, with him responding "maybe somethin' good. Or maybe somethin' stupid". They watch as inside the Fort, the dynamite detonates, sending the two sides into a frenzy and igniting a battle. The pair walks away as the fort is engulfed in smoke and gunfire.

S2E4 - The Demon in the Snow

NCR Camp

At the NCR Camp in the mountains near Primm, Lucy MacLean awakens with an IV drip running from her arm to an elevated can. She is greeted by Captain Rodriguez, who tells her that she was given meds to make her feel better after she was brought there by Cooper Howard, who is sitting nearby.

Lucy removes the IV and sits up, asking who the group is. Rodriguez responds by telling her that they are members of the New California Republic, as the group packs up their belongings. Lucy questions if this is all that is left, with Biff responding by telling her that there are many of them, they're just not there right now. He asks if she has been to Shady Sands, as that is where they come from. Lucy gives her condolences, with Rodriguez remarking that some "asshole" chose to burn down the first civilization taking shape in 100 years. Cooper then remarks that the past is the past. Lucy tells the soldiers that the majority of people they've met on the road from Los Angeles have been awful, so meeting them was a nice change of pace, causing Biff to thank her for her kind words.

Rodriguez then offers Lucy a place with the NCR, telling her that they are always looking for new recruits. Lucy turns her down, saying that she would, but she is looking for someone. Rodriguez questions if the person she is looking for is someone she cares about or hates, with Lucy responding that it is someone who hurt a lot of people. Rodriguez asks what her plan is once she finds him, and upon hearing Lucy say she plans to bring him to justice, responds that the New California Republic was meant to be about bringing justice to the wasteland, and says they almost did. Lucy smiles and says that she doesn't doubt it. Rodriguez tells Lucy that they won't be able to bring everything with them when they leave, and offers her her pick from a crate of weapons.

Lucy and Cooper leave as the soldiers continue packing. When Lucy tells Cooper that they seemed nice, he responds by asking if she thinks they would still be nice if they knew her father was the one who destroyed Shady Sands. She responds that she wasn't planning to stay with them, as all she saw was more "matching jackets", referencing how Cooper referred to the Great Khans.

Walking through the wasteland, Lucy begins scratching her skin frantically. She asks Cooper if he feels like the air is extra itchy and heavy, and asks if he's ever felt hungry, but not for food. Cooper answers that he is very familiar with the feeling, stopping and smiling at her. Lucy demands to know why he is stopping, before apologizing and questioning why she feels so grumpy, questioning if she is dying. He answers that she isn't dying, she's simply addicted to drugs.

Lucy denies this, with Cooper responding that the NCR had given her a two-day steady drip of Buffout. She tells him that she hereby quits drugs, while he stops and opens his saddle bags. She asks him what he has, before realizing that her declaration didn't take, and she is still, in fact, addicted to drugs. When she asks Cooper what she should do, he explains that there are two ways forward. Either she cut the drugs cold turkey, which would result in a lot of pain and vomiting for about four or five days. He tells her that in his experience the better route is to just keep doing drugs. Lucy capitulates, telling him that people are relying on her to complete her mission and that she takes the second option. Without hesitation, Cooper tosses her a bottle of Buffout he had retrieved from his saddle bags.

New Vegas

At the Strip South Gate, Cooper observes The Strip from a distance and notes that something isn't right. Lucy questions if he was expecting a welcoming committee, with him responding that he was. Using his Spyglass, he notices a destroyed Securitron as well as ghoulified members of The Kings. Cooper tells Lucy that they should enter through Freeside on the east side of town. After hearing that it would be a half-day's walk, Lucy objects, saying that she is done with the sidetracks and detours, and they should just power through The Strip. Cooper tells her that it's the drugs talking, but states that he likes what they're saying.

As the pair approaches the gate, they are approached by the ghoulfied Kings. Lucy attempts to negotiate with the ferals, but when one roars at her, she blows his leg off. As the ghouls attack, Lucy kills four of them before being tackled by a fifth. Killing him with a pistol, she tells Cooper that this is fine, as they are just ghouls, causing him to pause. Lucy retrieves a rifle, killing two more ghouls before turning her attention to one more, The King, who is walking away. She fires on the King, killing him with a headshot. As he falls, she turns to Cooper and gives him a thumbs-up.

As the pair prepares to enter the gate, she asks him if he has any cigarettes, as she would like to try one. Cooper notices a several more destroyed Securitrons, as Lucy stares at her trembling hand.

The Strip

With night having fallen, Lucy and Cooper enter the New Vegas Strip, finding it in a severe state of disrepair. Lucy questions if there are supposed to be people here, which Cooper confirms. Cooper reiterates that they should go to Freeside and that someone there would be able to tell them what happened to The Strip. As Lucy wanders away, Cooper notices that there is a level of radiation present on the strip. Lucy draws his attention to a large egg she has found, jokingly asking how big the chickens get around here. Horrified, Cooper states that it isn't a chicken egg.

Suddenly, an animal call rings out, causing Cooper to look around, startled. The noise originates from the Gomorrah, with Lucy stating that whatever it is, they can take it, and that it'll be easy. As the pair watches, the sound of heavy footsteps approaches the doors, until a pair of claws begin opening them from inside, causing Lucy's face to drop. The doors are quickly ripped off their hinges, revealing a Deathclaw.

The pair watch in horror as it steps forward into the light, before standing up to its full height, damaging the sign above it in the process.

Cooper Howard and Lucy MacLean watch in shock as the Deathclaw that emerged from the Gomorrah shakes itself off. They watch as it calls out, with a second Deathclaw near Vault 21 responding. A third Deathclaw approaches from The Tops, slapping down a tree with it's tail. Lucy turns to Cooper, and defers to him regarding what to do. He responds by telling her to run, and quickly hides behind a nearby car. As they hide, Lucy asks Cooper if he has any more drugs, with him incredulously responding that he doesn't have any more. After she asks what weapon he would recommend for fighting the Deathclaws, he asks if she has a rocket launcher, which she does not. After causing a distraction using a frag grenade, the pair sprint for the The Strip North Gate, sliding through it with the Deathclaws right behind.

Freeside

The next morning, Cooper and Lucy stand in Freeside, looking at the Strip Gate as the Deathclaws meander around on the other side of the gate. After Cooper informs Lucy that the Deathclaws are a new development, he explains to her that the Vault-Tec Corporation had a number of Vaults reserved for management, with him believing that one of these is where his wife and daughter are. He explains that he has explored several of these vaults, with one in California and another in Oregon, but has always found them empty. He tells her that he has never found one in Vegas, and that if Hank MacLean is there, his family might be as well. The two turn and begin walking down Fremont Street.

When Lucy suggests that they just walk in and get her father, Cooper rebukes her by saying that they can't just waltz past a pack of deathclaws. Walking under the Freeside Welcome Sign, Lucy suggests just shooting the Deathclaws, and tells Cooper that whatever they do, they need to do it fast, as she is out of drugs. Sighing, Cooper hands her a pouch of Bottle Caps, telling her to visit a nearby store called Sonny's Sundries and purchase some Addictol, as it will help her kick her addiction to drugs. When she comments that the store might have something to help fight the Deathclaws, Cooper responds that he wouldn't bet on it and turns to leave. When Lucy asks where he is going, he tells her, "To get fucked up".

Freeside

Lucy approaches Sonny's Sundries with the Caps given to her by The Ghoul in hand, only to notice the prices listed on the chalkboard outside have been recently dramatically increased. The Addictol she wished to purchase had risen from costing 125 caps to 1000 caps. Noticing that she does not have that many caps, she begins to walk towards the Atomic Wrangler before stopping and realizing that the back door to Sonny's Sundries is open and unlocked.

Making sure she is not seen, Lucy enters the store through the back entrance, watching the shopkeeper go upstairs so she can remain out of his line of sight. Spotting the Addictol on a chem display, she grabs an inhaler, only to then notice a Power Fist in the window display. As she takes the Power Fist, the floorboards creak as the shopkeeper returns down the stairs. Lucy crouches and hides, spotting and adding a duffel bag to her stolen items while she waits for an opportunity to sneak out. Seizing the moment, she begins to exit the store only to pause when she notices a naked corpse stuffed into a trash can. While she is distracted, the shopkeeper in an ill-fitting uniform spots her and inquires what she's doing. As she begins to lie that she just came in through the wrong door by mistake, she notices a portrait of Sonny hung up, realizing that he looks nothing like the shopkeeper, and a lot more like the naked corpse she just saw. When confronted about it, the shopkeeper attempts to explain that Sonny is out of town and that the corpse she saw was a failed thief who attempted to rob the store naked. When questioned, he explains that lots of people attempt to rob stores naked.

Lucy attempts to leave, only for the shopkeeper to take a gun from off the wall and aim it at her, forcing Lucy to shoot him in self-defense. While Lucy begins to approach the fallen shopkeeper and apologize, believing to have shot him non-lethally, she discovers that she had accidentally killed the shopkeeper. A customer then enters the store, asking who Lucy is, to which she replies that she doesn't know.

Lucy exits Sonny's Sundries with Addictol in hand. She puts the inhaler in her mouth and activates it. She briefly pauses after the medication is administered, waiting for it to take effect, before she vomits onto the ground below her, purging her body of the drugs. As the vomiting stops, she catches her breath for a moment.

Atomic Wrangler

Entering The Ghoul's hotel room at the Atomic Wrangler, Lucy exclaims that she is officially "done with" drugs, before beginning to retch again. The Ghoul directs her to the window, to which Lucy runs and begins vomiting out onto the street below. As she coughs and catches her breath again, The Ghoul walks up to and stands beside her, placing a hand on her back and asking if she's done before closing the window and walking her to an armchair. Lucy thanks The Ghoul, before a figure stood in the doorway coughs to catch their attention. Lucy asks who the figure is, only for The Ghoul to leave them to introduce themselves. The figure is revealed to be Snake Oil Salesman, the Black Box still on the back of his neck. His hair is cut, and he is now dressed in cleaner and more formal buttoned-up businesswear.

Snake Oil Salesman explains that he has been sent by Hank, and relays that although Hank is impressed Lucy was able to follow him so far, he's safe in an underground facility that cannot be reached by her. Lucy compels Snake Oil Salesman to take her and The Ghoul to her father immediately, however Snake Oil Salesman declines. He explains that he does not have permission to, before pivoting to the fact that Hank is watching over The Ghoul's family in Cryostasis and threatens that it would "be a shame" if Hank were forced to take them out of their Cryogenic "slumber" prematurely, pointing out that they almost certainly would not survive such a process. Lucy encourages The Ghoul not to listen to Snake Oil Salesman, and that he cannot be trusted, however he continues, relaying Hank's bargain. The Ghoul's family will remain safe and undisturbed inside their Cryogenic Chambers, but in exchange, The Ghoul must return Lucy to the safety of Vault 33, in order to ensure the safety of both families. Lucy expresses confusion, to which Snake Oil Salesman clarifies that Hank is in the process of setting things into motion that he would prefer Lucy to "wait out" back home, before turning to The Ghoul and asking if he accepts the bargain.

Lucy expresses disbelief that The Ghoul is even considering the offer, however The Ghoul points out that he always intended to use Lucy as leverage to get his family back, and this is exactly that. As Lucy tearfully says she thought the two of them were finally beginning to get along, The Ghoul shoots her with a tranquilizing dart, causing her to stumble disoriented. Snake Oil Salesman says he will relay to Hank that The Ghoul accepted the bargain and leaves. Lucy pulls the empty dart out of her before attempting to attack The Ghoul, though she is only able to grab him before falling to the floor. The Ghoul picks up his belongings and pours himself a glass of whiskey, saying that Lucy should go to sleep and that when she wakes up, she will be back at Vault 33. He sorrowfully says that it can't be helped and that family is a fucked up thing, before drinking his whiskey.

Lucy struggles and attempts to stand. With her new Power Fist in hand, Lucy manages to stand up without The Ghoul noticing. She readies the weapon and charges at him, yelling. The Ghoul turns from his glass of Whiskey, but Lucy manages to strike him, the force sending him flying into the window, smashing through it and onto the sharp remains of a streetlamp outside, skewering The Ghoul through his torso. Lucy dejectedly shouts down to him that she thought they were friends, before the tranquilizer takes full effect and she falls to the ground. A figure opens the door to the hotel room at the Atomic Wrangler, Lucy lying barely conscious on the floor by the window. The figure, entering focus and revealed to be Hank, kneels down beside her and smiles, wiping her brow and calling her his "little sugar bomb" before she fades from consciousness.

S2E6 - The Other Player

Vault-Tec X-Branch

Awakening in the Vault-Tec X-Branch, Lucy MacLean finds herself in Observation 07, a small bedroom within the facility. A yellow dress hangs nearby. Lucy briefly looks at herself in the mirror before finding a note left by Hank MacLean, instructing her to call him on the phone.

Leaving the room, Lucy approaches the first corner. Peeking around it, Lucy sees two members of Caesar's Legion walking down the hallway towards her. Grabbing a nearby fire extinguisher, she prepares to defend herself as they round the corner. Before she can strike, the pair warmly greets her before continuing on their way. As they walk away, Lucy sees they both have Black Boxes affixed to their necks.

Lucy enters the main work floor of the facility, where she witnesses a large number of Black Boxed employees, victims of Hank, who he had kidnapped from the surface, working together in harmony to make even more Black Boxes. Lucy proceeds to a Vault-Tec apartment labeled Simulation, where she finds Hank preparing dinner.

When Hank sees her, he places the bowl of nuts he was holding down on the table. He motions to the book on the table, a copy of All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. He remarks that they never got to discuss the book during their family book club, supposing that they were waiting till after she was married. He refers to the ending of the book as "a humdinger," causing Lucy to respond that she never ended up finishing the book. When asked about the parts she did read, she tells him that it was upsetting, which he agrees with. Hank tells her that what he found most upsetting was the fact that everyone was fighting and dying over nothing, and that the only thing differentiating the French and German soldiers was the uniform. He equates this to current life on the surface and asks if that was her experience as well.

As the record he was listening to ends, Hank stands up to turn it off. He comments that it is his belief that people hurt each other to feel safe. While he is distracted, Lucy sneaks up on him with a pair of scissors she had previously grabbed and holds them to his throat. Lucy informs Hank that she plans to bring him back to Vault 33 to face justice for the destruction of Shady Sands. Hank smiles, telling her that for a second, he believed that the surface had changed her. He retrieves a pair of Handcuffs, telling her that she will need them to make the arrest official. When questioned on his actions, he responds that perhaps he went too far, and he has to take responsibility for what he has done. He insists that before they leave, Lucy allow him to show her his work, stating that what he is doing is redemptive. He objects to her assertion that he is brainwashing people, stating that it is a complicated process. As she leads him out of the room, he reminisces to her about a project he had when she was five involving potato batteries.

Still Inside the Vault-Tec X Branch, Lucy leads the handcuffed Hank onto the main work floor. When Shelley sees Lucy leading him along at scissor point, she drops the tray of Black Boxes she is holding in shock. Hank assures everyone that there is nothing to worry about, as Lucy is pursuing justice, which they like. Lucy questions where Hank found all of the people here, with him responding that he got them from "all over". He begins introducing the workers, starting with Marjorie, who he says used to be "kind of a murderer", but who now sharpens pencils. He next points out Sherman and Gregory, who he states were from opposing tribes and who would have killed each other if they had met a month prior. Last, he introduces Rita, who he says used to cook people for Caesar's Legion, but who now makes Trail Mix. Rita offers the mix to Lucy, who turns it down.

As Lucy leads Hank away, he directs her to an easier exit point, opening a metal door with a nearby control panel. Lucy tells him that when they leave, they are letting out all of the workers so they can return home, to which Hank agrees. Lucy walks back into the room, informing the workers that they can return to the surface now. Rita and a now black boxed Nick the Prick question if they have to, as it is dangerous. Hank agrees, but says that his daughter's moral code demands it. When Nick says that they like it down there, Hank tells them that they can stay as long as they like, but the doors will be open if they want to leave.

The conversation is interrupted by the arrival of the Snake Oil Salesman and another man, wheeling in a Legionary along with a now captured Biff. The pair has been implanted with Black Boxes, but they have not yet been activated. As the pair struggles against their binds, the salesman questions what they should do about them, with Hank deferring to Lucy. Before Lucy can stop them, one of the workers begins releasing the legionary, who knocks him away and attacks Biff, declaring him "NCR hostis!"

As Lucy attempts to rescue a still-bound Biff, the legionary pursues them through the rows of desks. Hank tells her that this is the violence he is attempting to prevent as she wheels the ranger past him. The legionary grabs Lucy and begins to choke her, but she is handed a pencil by Marjorie and stabs him in the side with it, causing him to throw her across a desk. As Lucy watches, the legionary grabs a stapler and begins attacking Biff with it. Unable to do anything else to save him, she presses the activation for the Black Boxes, erasing the pair's memories and making them behave like the workers of the facility. The Legionary questions why Biff is strapped to the chair, before helping him out and taking him to find medical attention for his staple wounds. Lucy looks at Hank, who smiles and says, "Kum ba yah".

At the Vault-Tec X-Branch, the mind-controlled workers continue their work, constructing new Black Boxes. Lucy MacLean admits to her father, Hank, that this is one way to save the world, but it is still wrong. Hank responds that "perfect is the enemy of good". Lucy approaches the Snake Oil Salesman and questions Hank on what the box does to the brains of those implanted. He tells her that it "tidies things up" and wipes their memories. The controller he has lets him control how much amnesia they have, while the facility's mainframe implants new ideas. He tells her that those ideas turn them wastelanders into "well-meaning, good people."

Lucy reiterates that she intends to shut down this operation and take Hank back to Vault 33 to face justice. Hank informs her that once the process is completed, it cannot be undone. Lucy then demands to know how to stop Hank from doing this to other people, with him saying she'd have to mainframe in the basement. Since it is a long distance, he offers to take her on the Golf Cart, causing her to question what a Golf Cart is.

The pair drives down the halls of the facility with Lucy behind the wheel of the cart and Hank teaching her how to drive. Hank laments the pair of them not having a normal life, with Lucy responding that they had one until he ruined it.

The pair arrives in the lower level of the facility and begins approaching the mainframe room, with Lucy informing Hank how she's going to destroy the mainframe with a bomb. Before they can enter, they are stopped by the former Massive Legionary, who happily informs the pair that he just mopped where they are, so they should be careful. Taken aback by the change in the man who had only recently attempted to choke her to death, Lucy admits to Hank that Caesar's Legion is still active, and with the X-Branch he could stop them for good. Hank corrects her, saying that they could stop them together.

Lucy MacLean, now wearing the Yellow Dress her father left for her, looks at herself in the mirror inside Observation 07. Exiting the room, she departs down the hallway, passing by Global Comms on her way.

Arriving back in the Simulation room, where she had initially encountered Hank. The pair eats a meal, reminiscing over the Mashed Potatoes they are eating, and how unlike Norm they were always Lucy's favorite. The pleasant time is interrupted by the arrival of the now mind-controlled Biff, who serves the pair water. When questioned by Lucy on his memories of meeting her for the first time, his life in the Mojave Wasteland, or his past with the New California Republic, Biff does not recall any of it. Hank dismisses Biff and stands to walk to the kitchen. As he does, he remarks that the New California Republic and Caesar's Legion are just like each other. He comments on taxation, expansionism, and bad foreign policy. He assures Lucy that she will understand when she is older, before burning his hand on the Pie he was retrieving from the oven.

Lucy stands to assist him, walking into the kitchen. Unlocking one of his handcuffs, she tells him that she understands. The Legion is a murderous slaver state that crucifies people, and the NCR is "just vaguely problematic". Saying this, she locks the cuff she just removed from his wrist onto the handle of the oven, and removes his Pip-Boy as she steps quickly away from him. Lucy tells him that he was a good father, and because of that, she isn't "a fudging idiot". As Hank shouts and struggles with his cuff, she departs, telling him that she is going to shut down the mainframe.

Lucy speeds through the facility on the golf cart, heading towards the mainframe.

Having now armed herself with a crowbar, Lucy approaches the mainframe room. Using Hank's Pip-Boy, she accesses the door controls.

Lucy opens the door to the mainframe and is horrified by what she sees inside. On a table, wired into the computers, is the head of Representative Welch, wearing a Command Helmet.

Inside the mainframe room of the Vault-Tec X-Branch, a horrified Lucy MacLean approaches the head of Representative Welch. Looking at the computer consoles, she sees eight Black Boxes, all being programmed by Welch's brain by way of the Command Helmet affixed to her head.

As Lucy approaches the table, she is shocked when Welch blinks and begins looking at her. She questions her if she is alive, and Welch responds by asking her to kill her. Lucy protests, telling her that they could help save her, with Welch reiterating that she needs to kill her to stop Hank MacLean. Lucy questions why she must keep killing people before tearfully obliging Welch's repeated request. As she strikes Welch with her crowbar, the machinery around her ceases to function.

Lucy walks through the X-Branch, crossing a bridge before coming to a stop on an overlook.

Lucy is approached by a now freed Hank, who questions why she destroyed the mainframe. He tells her that while House invented the Black Box to control people and turn them into robots, he simply wanted to further it by giving those implanted some personality, as he doesn't want to live in a world of robots. Lucy questions who it was in the mainframe, with Hank responding truthfully. He tells her that Congresswoman Diane Welch was an ISTP on the Myers-Briggs, which he believed to be the gold standard for personnel. He tells her that Welch's personality type was something they could use more of in the world. When Lucy questions why he would do that to her, he responds by saying that his job is complicated.

Lucy questions Hank about his end goal, with him responding that miniaturization is "the wave of the future". He tells her that soon, they won't know who has been automated or not, and that all they will have is a scar on the back of their neck to show. He opens a napkin, revealing a tiny black box.

A door opens, and the Massive Legionary enters the room. Hank states that other than the scar, Lucy will be his little girl again, revealing his intent to implant her with a black box. Realizing what he plans to do, she calls him insane, with him responding that even if she does really mean that, she won't soon. The massive legionary steps forward and grabs Lucy by the neck.

As Lucy is held down by the massive legionary, Hank prepares to implant her with the miniature Black Box. Suddenly, the legionary is killed when a throwing knife strikes him in the head, crumpling to the ground. The knife is revealed to have been thrown by Cooper Howard, who quickly draws his Ghoul Revolver and fires a round through Hank's upper leg.

Cooper tells Hank that if it was his decision, he would have killed him, but instead, he is leaving it to Lucy, sliding her his derringer before departing.

New Vegas Strip

Limping, Hank exits the Lucky 38 onto the New Vegas Strip, followed closely by Lucy. Having implanted him with the black box, she holds its control box. Hank stops and tells her that they don't get views like that in the vault. Lucy responds that she dreamed of coming to the surface with him, with him responding that he wanted to make it worthy of her. He tells her he was almost looking forward to returning to Vault 33 with her, naming several of their friends and family before observing that they are not going to be going back to the vault. She responds that the wasteland changed her.

Hank tells Lucy that the Legion is on its way and that it will kill everyone present in Vegas when it arrives. He tells her that the two of them could stop them together. Lucy tells him to tell her what he was doing in the facility, and that once he does, she will turn him into the father she thought he was. As she says this, she grips the Black Box in her hand. Lucy accuses Hank of lying to her her whole life, with him responding that he knows she feels that way. He tells her that the surface was the experiment, rather than the vaults. When questioned on this, he tells her that he has sent Black Boxed agents into the wasteland to perform duties laid out for them two hundred years in advance. Without Lucy noticing, he pulls a second control box from his pocket. Lucy questions what the orders are, and what he did, but in response, he turns to her and tells her that he loves her. Before she can stop him, he activates his black box, wiping his memories.

Lucy sits with him and embraces him, crying. No longer recognizing her, he tells her that she has a smudge on her face and asks if he can wipe it off, which she allows. When he is done, she stands up and walks into the center of the Strip, unsure of what to do next.

Maximus enters the strip and, recognizing Lucy, calls out to her. The pair embraces, as Hank sits nearby.

Lucky 38 Penthouse

Lucy and Maximus exit the elevator into the Lucky 38 Penthouse, finding the Lucky 38 Main Computer Console displaying a "Signal Lost" message. They walk past it and look out the window to see Caesar's Legion marching on the city. Lucy laments this, stating it is her fault as she had the chance to stop it with Hank, and now there will be a war. Maximus responds by welcoming her to the wasteland, before taking her hand.

As they look out the window, Mr. House briefly appears on the screen before disappearing again, not yet ready to reveal himself to the world.

Inventory[edit]

As a resident of Vault 33, Lucy wears her Vault Jumpsuit and her Pip-Boy 3000 Mark V across her left forearm. When explaining her aptitudes to the Council, she is shown in a Vault gymnast's suit as well as using Vault fencing gear, including a fencing helmet and a fencing foil. When doing intensive tasks, such as working with the Young Pipefitter's Association, she ties the top half of her jumpsuit to her waist, wearing a tanktop as an undershirt. During her wedding, she wears a Wedding Dress without her Pip-Boy. She takes a leather holster as well as a Tranq Gun alongside several syringe capsules as ammo when she fights the Vault 32 Raiders and again when she leaves Vault 33 for the wasteland with a Vault backpack. Out in the wasteland, Lucy wears a harness on top of her Vault Jumpsuit, uses a handheld buzzsaw at the behest of Dr. Siggi Wilzig to cut off his head for her to deliver to Moldaver, as well as using a Classic 10mm Pistol during the Battle of Griffith Observatory.

A resident of Vault 33, Lucy actively contributes to the well-being of her community. She participates in the Young Piker’s Association, gymnastics club, fencing team, intermediate Phys. Ed., and riflery. Her primary passion is teaching American history with a focus on ethics. In her personal time she watches movies with her dad, gardens (also with her dad), and enjoys family book club (again, with her dad — Norm chooses not to participate). She’s upbeat and uncannily direct with an all-American can-do spirit.Amazon
Lucy is an optimistic Vault Dweller whose all-American, can-do spirit is tested when her father is kidnapped. For the first time in her life, she leaves Vault 33 to pursue her father’s captors across The Wasteland where she encounters violence and creatures she’d never imagined, along with shocking truths about everything she thought she knew about life above and below the irradiated surface. "Lucy is a vault dweller. What excited me about playing her is that she is so innocent and so naïve, and obviously very privileged, as well. It was exciting for me to start in that place. She’s essentially a newborn baby. She hasn’t had any real-life experiences. All she knows is what she was taught and what she’s read in books that she has in the vault. It’s limited. And then, you put her on the wasteland, and what happens with that? That was a really exciting place for me to start."Ella Purnell on a Collider Interview[Ext 2]
"I think for Lucy, she's lived a very sheltered life, literally, and she really has wanted for nothing. She's never really faced anywhere near the kind of challenges that Maximus or Ghoul have. Her survivor identity... I think it's created by her willingness and her ability to adapt when she gets to the surface. I think that's the show and the game is all about choices. It's all about that's how you evolve and I think Lucy is faced with so many of those so early on of like, is she going to stay in the vault or is she going to leave the vault? That's the first big choice. I think her being a survivor is actually something that is formed throughout the season rather than maybe what the audience see when they first see her."Ella Purnell on a IGN Interview[Ext 3]
