Soda or soft drinks are consumables found and mentioned across the Fallout Series.

Background[edit]

Popular before the war, sold by vending machines or dispensed via Soda Fountains. After the war, soda is still found and can be consumed.

Nuka-Cola[edit]

>>
Main article: Nuka-Cola

Nuka-Cola is a beverage produced by the Nuka-Cola Corporation.[1] The product dominated the market as the most popular American soda.[2] In the aftermath of the Great War, the soft drink is still found and the bottle caps of Nuka-Cola are the most commonly used currency.[3]

Nuka-Cola entered the beverage market in 2044, with the invention of the soft drink by John-Caleb Bradberton after two years of experimentation.[1] It contained 120% of the recommended daily allowance of sugar, was immediately successful in the United States, and within a year could be purchased nationwide.[4][5][6][7] The unique taste of Nuka-Cola is the result of a combination of 17 fruit essences, balanced to enhance the classic cola flavor.[8] The formula consists of Carbonated Water, Caramel Color, Aspartame, Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Benzoate (to protect taste), Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, and Caffeine.

Additional formula research resulted in numerous flavor variations, popular additions including cherry, grape, and orange released just a few years after the drink debuted.[9] The last Nuka-Cola taste variant was created in October 2076, dubbed Nuka-Cola Quantum based on an isotope of strontium-90, the first cases of which hit the market in select cities before the war.[10][11] Ingredients were combined in just the right proportion, to the level that shortages of ingredients or changes to the recipe were noticed by consumers, as said to have happened during the Great Passion Fruit Famine of 2044.[12] Nuka-Cola Quantum was the result of a three-year research program focused on creating an isotope safe for human consumption.[13]

It was marketed and labeled as being fortified with "vitaminerals" and "health tonics."[14] Frequent consumption could cause addiction, which led to splitting headaches.[15] The color of this soda is described as "brown".[16] Post-War, the taste of it is described as "warm and flat".[17] Scientists at the Kanawha Nuka-Cola Plant were attempting to utilize chemical substitution in Nuka-Cola beverages to create new flavors.[18]

Sunset Sarsaparilla[edit]

>>
Main article: Sunset Sarsaparilla

The Sunset Sarsaparilla Company was founded in 1918.[19][20] By 2077, the soda's popularly had spread nationwide and into Canada, despite competition from Nuka-Cola Corporation's Nuka-Cola Wild, an attempt to replicate the soda's flavor and success.[21][22]

Despite the widespread success of the drink, a study was conducted that claimed the soda was hazardous to consumers' health. Channel 6 broadcasted that the study showed consuming large quantities of the product resulted in a wide range of harmful side effects, including kidney damage, nausea, digital numbness, anxiety, loss of visual acuity, dizziness, occasional nosebleeds, joint inflammation, tooth decay, sore throat, bronchitis, organ rupture, and halitosis.[23] The drink is made with pure cane sugar.

Some bottles have a bottle cap with a blue star on the bottom. The Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Cap bottles were used as part of a promotion before the Great War, where participants needed to redeem 50 of them at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Company's headquarters in Las Vegas to receive a prize.

Vim![edit]

>>
Main article: Vim

Vim! Pop Incorporated was founded in 1931, initially sold as a health tonic.[24] In New England it was more widely consumed than its rival Nuka-Cola.[25] Vim was even referred to as a state tradition and about to become the official state drink of Maine but during the process of making this official, legal situations forced the company to back off its marketing.[26]

Vim was going to be bought out by the Nuka-Cola Corporation before the war. Doyle Reed, the owner who held the company in his family for years, was fighting against the takeover. However, with certain financial problems being caused by the company's legal issues, the CEO was being urged to sell the company.[27] The only legal entanglement that the public was aware of consisted of a male employee of the Vim! Factory, Alex, allegedly punching a female bar patron,[26] though several witnesses denied this, instead supporting Alex's claim that the female hit him unprovoked and he hit back as a reflex.[28] Still, the local news attached to this story and forced the company to hold back on television advertisements and product release.[29]

One successful form of marketing which continued despite these problems was the Vim! Ambassador program, where salespeople in fully functional T-51 Power Armor painted in Vim! livery would go out among the public.[30] Two sets of such armor are available: one in Vim! Paint at the Vim! Pop Factory next to the terminal where the paint schemes can be downloaded,[31] and another in Vim! Refresh Paint in a truck along the coastal road north of the National Park Visitor's Center.

Note that you'd have to drink a heap of Sunset Sarsaparilla to match the quantities used in the study. How much, you ask? A lot. A whole helluva lot.
