AVRO

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

AVRO (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep; General Association of Radio Broadcasting) was one of the oldest and most popular Dutch TV and radio programme makers, specialising in popular programmes such as shows, plays, quizzes, series, drama and youth programmes. It was founded in 1927. However, it ended in 2014 when it and TROS joined themselves to form AVROTROS.

1st ID (1963, 40th anniversary)

Visuals: Out of all three still images shown, the images feature a split light-dark gray background, a supposed shield with a stylized lion on top, and the abstract "AVRO" embedded in the shield in white all at the left. Below, "AVRO" appears at a perspective at one moment, with "40 Jaar" appearing above next to the shield.

Trivia: The logo at the time was designed by André Vlaanderen.

Technique: Possibly cel animation.

Audio: Unknown.

2nd ID (1963-1967)

Visuals: Over a grainy medium-light teal shade background, there is an isolated drawing of Italian artist Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, in which the screen zooms in between the hands, with white spots appearing at one moment, creating duplicates. At some point, the hands turn red and emit white rings. "avro" zooms out, as the hands and the rings disappear at one moment, with shades of yellow and green peeking through the background.

Technique: Cel animation made by the Afdeling Grafisch Ontwerp of NOS.

Audio: Unknown.

3rd ID (1969-1977)

Visuals: On a black background, there is part of a ball machine, with a pendulum constantly diverting balls which ram into it. On the right side of the screen is the logo for AVRO at the time, which is "avro" in a abstract font.

Technique: Live-action, with the logo plastered in.

Audio: A sampled piece from the track "Vibration" from Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan's 1959 album "The Fascinating World of Electronic Music" followed by the end of the track.

4th ID (1969-1977)

Visuals: On a black background, there is two chevrons made of the AVRO logo that change colors sliding and intersecting across each other. Another pair closer to the screen then slides in and a blue light appears in the center of the screen and slowly takes over the screen. 3 AVRO logos then zoom towards the screen in random places and two pairs of rings wipe in, getting smaller towards the center, and rotate out of sync. The "avro" text in an outlined font then quickly appears and turns into four circles that zoom out, along with everything else, to reveal a yellow AVRO logo zooming in quickly to the center of the screen, in which it slows down dramatically.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A trumpet fanfare.

5th ID (1969-1977)

Visuals: There is a man turning his radio on, followed by a cat on a couch, and wine being poured in a glass. After some clips of chips being poured in a small plate, an aquarium, a fireplace, a dog playing with a boy, a canary in its cage, and a full table, there is a blue background with text saying "een avondje avro" ("An evening of AVRO" in Dutch).

Technique: Live-action.

Audio: A signature song that goes like this: "Een avondje AVRO, dat schuift bij de kuis. Een avondje AVRO, daar blijf je van thuis."

6th ID (October 1977-1978)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On a blue background, yellow puzzle pieces featuring illustrations of the network's presenters at the time, appear in sync with the music tune, completing it into 12 pieces in total, with three missing on the middle of the background. Shortly, the remaining pieces are put in, in which feature the AVRO logo in white. The puzzly edge marks disappear through the middle. Beneath it, a black rear extends over it.
  • Closing: The sequence starts with the finished result. The three pieces from the middle dissappear which leave the AVRO logo intact. The pieces surrounding it slowly disappear, leaving the logo in the blue background.

Technique: Cel animation by advertising agency Prad.

Audio:

  • Opening: An 8-note triumphant brass fanfare based on the Westminster Quarters, leading to a resonant synth rendition of the "Een avondje AVRO" signature theme.
  • Closing: A slower, quieter version of the above theme featuring a flute and piano.

7th ID (1978-1980)

Visuals: There is the new AVRO logo (styled in a curvy script), zooming out over a blue background while multiple circular outlines pass through the sides, in different colors like blue, red, yellow, turquoise and pink. The circles stop moving once a larger circle surrounding the screen is formed. A red outline appears around the AVRO logo with a white outline then drawing in. The other blue outlines turn shiny and sparkles appear around the logo.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A jazzy rearrangement of the "Een avondje AVRO" signature theme, with bell notes when the sparkles appear.

8th ID (1980-1983)

Visuals:

  • On a navy background full of white/cyan sparkles, a bicolored rectangle with traits of dodger blue and blue, wipes in by four segments each, two of them wiping left and the other two wiping right, with the AVRO logo cutout of them once revealed. Sky blue beams wipe in the AVRO logo by two separate segments, going from left and right directions. Upon completion, the navy background is filled in with the traits of the bicolored rectangle. The sparkles fade.
  • From a blue background that splits onto two shades, there is an overload of blue/yellow sparkles, in which eventually organize into the AVRO logo, transforming it to white.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the sparkles are kept for the remainder of the logo.
  • The logo is still with the end result.

Technique: 2D computer effects.

Audio: It starts with a rapidly ascending orchestral run, subsequently transitioning, via a synth flourish, to a string theme accompanied by synths, bass, and drums. As the logo finishes forming, there is a brief drum solo, followed by an ongoing synth note that eventually stabilizes.

9th ID (1983, 60th anniversary)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On a navy-indigo starfield, a silver rounded rectangle outline wipes in initially from the bottom and finally to the top, with two bent curves at the upper-left vertexes with swallowtail cuts. Above it, a thin conjoint "60" wipes in starting with it's initial positions first. Over the rectangle, a blue trail of AVRO logos zoom towards it, stopping at an average size. In front of it, the white AVRO logo fades in.
  • Closing: Over the end result, the white AVRO logo fades out, and the trails zoom out. Over the rectangle, "tot ziens" fades in.

Technique: Computer animation made by Rob van den Berg of the Afdeling Grafisch Ontwerp of NOS.

Audio: A spacey-like rearrangement of the previous ident's theme, which includes an organ, twinkling sounds, a synth glissando, etc.

10th ID (Late 1983-1984)

Visuals: On a blue background, a trio of white outlined AVRO logos scroll in initally from the right and finally to the left, slowly. Each of it's insides have video clips playing. When that's done, the words: "Hallo Nederland, dit ("is" or "wordt weer") je Avondje (or "Middaje")!" appear one by one in rows. At the lower-right corner, a yellow "AVRO" script writes in.

Variants:

  • When the Weekend-Film block is about to be aired, the words now read: "Op het eind van de avond begint het pas goed: de Weekend Film!".
  • During closings, the first row now reads "Dag Nederland,". The second row now reads "Tot morgen" or "tot gauw!" instead.
  • There is an alternate version where in the last sequence, the AVRO logo in glowing cyan wipes in by white beams instead.

Technique: Chyroned effects with live-action footage by Rob van den Berg of the Afdeling Grafisch Ontwerp of NOS.

Audio: A moody triumphant fanfare from the supposed "Count On Us" music package, recomposed by Tonny Eyk and Jerry van Rooyen.

11th ID (1984-1985)

Visuals: On a dodger blue background, a fuzzy light blue haze expands abroad in which shows two blue colors smearing out of themselves, in which then clear out and show the same traits, smearing out and forming what looks to be like chevrons. The colors slide out of their ways to reveal the AVRO logo in white zooming in with many blue colors smearing behind it, turning it into blue and the main logo into metallic with shines. White lines are now shown peeking out of the logo.

Variants:

  • There was an instance in which "einde" in red fades on the lower-right corner.
  • There is a still variant showing the end result.

Technique: Computer animation made by Johan Volkerijk using the program Antics.

Audio: An up-beating percussion theme with two 2-note guitar riffs and an ascending harp, followed by a violin string ongoing with three cymbal hits, a drum section and two low trumpet notes to finish.

12th ID (1985-April 1988)

Visuals: On a black background, there are multiple colorful dots shooting forward to the right-most, all with a trail following it. Another sequence follows this which shows a few of the dots orbiting like a circle. Suddenly, two dismantled segments of a rounded bicolored rectangle in dodger blue and navy slide to the sides of the screen where they rotate. The screen zooms out of the dots to reveal that the dots are orbiting to trace the AVRO logo, in which at that point the background brightens into cerulean and the dots white. The dots flash, revealing the AVRO logo in a blue-raspberry chrome color. The sequence in the background plays in contrary direction, with the rectangle segments coming near themselves and bounce. The background fades back to cerulean.

Technique: 2D computer animation with CGI elements.

Audio: A jazzy composition by Tonny Eyk.

13th ID (April 1988-1989)

Visuals:

  • Opening: From up in the sky, a yellow crescent wipes in and releases a flock of blue birds. The resulting footage fades onto various landscape shots involving the Netherlands (e.g; a grass field, a beach, a city) as the birds get near as some soar up. The birds return from the bottom and soar towards the left. Their shadows form the AVRO logo. Ten birds in total fly out and soar, with one going towards the left, while five of the rest go right. A flock of birds from the distance form the AVRO logo as they sweep out. The remaining four birds get near to the screen and fly out. Lastly, the birds reorganize together to form the AVRO logo, turning it to metallic blue.
  • Closing: There is a shot of an ocean during evening hours. The ten birds appear in it's usual animation. Before they fly out, the AVRO logo rises in from the land mass in the horizon, as it zooms in and quickly dissipates before setting, turning it into the same birds, as they depart.

Variants:

  • There is a short version where it features a wheat field over a beach during morning/afternoon hours. The camera slowly pans over the left. The four birds appear in it's usual animation. Before they fly out, the AVRO logo in silver zooms in.
  • There is a version used during Christmas. In here, there are mostly four still shots of Christmas ornaments with some having reflection in them. On the last shot, the AVRO in metallic gold is added in front of, covered by snow and white stars.

Technique: Live-action footage with CGI by Peekel/Stips Productions.

Audio: A soft synth strum with a long-held violin string, in which culminates into a proud brass fanfare with percussions and violins, composed by Joop Stokkermans. This tune is based off from the patriotic song titled "Waar de blanke top der duinen (Mijn Nederland)" by Pieter Louwerse.

Audio Variants:

  • The closing used a more somber rendition of the main tune, featuring a saxophone and violins.
  • The Christmas version used a softer rendition of the main tune, featuring what sounded like a flute and violins.

14th ID (1989-1992)

Visuals:

  • Opening: On a navy holographic background covered with light refractions, a gold television appears into the scene accompanied by a white flash. The viewpoint shifts around the television, rotating until the screen faces towards the viewpoint (where another shot of the same logo is playing.) The shot fades from the television to a video camera in a void (which zooms in with an after image.) The viewpoint rotates around the camera before beginning to zoom into the lens, dissolving into another shot of the top of the camera. The recording light flashes red before fading into another shot of a production control room with more shots of the same logo playing on the screens. A lever is switched on the control panel, causing all the screens to switch to a shot of a film feeding through a projector, including the viewpoint. Shortly after, the scene fades to a compact disc slowly moving away from the viewpoint with five audio meters overlayed on the shot bouncing up and down. Shortly after, the scene fades to a shot of a tennis racket and a soccer ball overlaying the "AVRO" text. The soccer ball pans up and out of view while the racket moves towards the viewpoint. Another soccer ball bounces off the racket, causing a visible recoil before fading to a view of two translucent violins. A rainbow streaks across the screen from the right before a piano fades into view behind the two violins, playing in time with the audio. The camera pans under the keys keeping the focus but dissolving to a shot of several buildings of varied heights (in the same spots as the keys,) zooming directly into a window where film was rolling through. The picture in the film flows directly into the next scene where a golden satellite slowly orbits around the landmasses of Earth. A white light appears in the middle of the Earth with the beams following the outlines of the land masses. The viewpoint zooms in towards the middle of the Earth just before the Netherlands moves into view, fading into the final shot. The "AVRO" text moves into the center of the view, rotating from its bottom to face towards the viewpoint; the holographic background from the beginning of the logo slowly fades in as well. Once the text is in place, three sparkles flash on the logo. (One under the curve of the R, one under the right leg of the A and one inside the O.)
  • Closing: The sequence starts with the video camera section, where the screen backs out. The next sequence shows the AVRO logo in a transparent holographic texture, where the screen is at a downwards position and rotates from the left-most to the right-most. The following sequences show the disc, the 1-inch reel tape, the violins, the production control room sections. The latter section flashes white which leads to the sequence where the AVRO logo moves towards the center and rotating into view.

Variants:

  • There's a variant where the slogan "EEN BEEJTE KLASSE KAN GEEN KWAAD" fades in below.
  • In some logos, the Nederland I byline can be seen in the bottom right at the end of the logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Four of these soundtracks are composed by Stephen Emmer:

  • Opening: There are two variants of the same theme that were used, both of which revolving around an eight note melody. One was an acoustic rendition, featuring a full orchestra as well as bass, electric guitar, drums and keys. The other was more electronic-based, featuring the use of synthesizers, a punchy brass section, synthesized drums and keys. However, both feature a sound effect for when the soccer ball bounces off the racket.
  • Closing: Two versions are used, one with a somber/brass rendition of the opening theme, and another with the same traits but slightly modified to add a percussion soundtrack.

15th ID (1992-1993)

Visuals: There is a blue and white square facing to the right side to the screen. The square faces the camera and flies to the top of the screen, and then suddenly cuts off to the letter "A" of the logo (which has an extended middle line). The letter "A" goes to the middle of the screen and then the other letters of the logo appear and settle next to the "A", making the logo. The words "Dit was een programma van de" ("This was a program of the [AVRO]") fade in above it.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The closing theme of the show.

16th ID (1993-1997)

Visuals: The screen zooms out from the "A" created within a cutout on a tall vertical metallic blue bar next to 21 of them in a diagonal angle. Those bars created a hole one by one which align correctly into view to form the AVRO logo cutout within. The bars fade out as the main logo itself fades. Above, "dit was een programma van de" or "in opdracht van de" fade in.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The closing theme of the show.

17th ID (1997-September 1, 1999)

Visuals: Four known versions exist:

  • Nieuwsgierige/Betrokken: The AVRO logo has a rusty-like texture with a faint duplicate of it wobbling outwards. There is a flow of transparent water draining out set from a near-90° angle, in which fire combusts on the left-most but quickly dissipates, leaving out smoke and cyan fire particles. Above it, "DE NIEUWSGIERIGE/BETROKKEN" types in. The AVRO logo is given a galaxy atmosphere color from the insides with a cyan ball of light on the "O"'s tail. The website URL fades underneath.
  • Eigenzinnige: There is the AVRO logo with a red ball of light behind and is behind of two goldfishes at the front. The logo is lightened up and is given a carved rock-texture. Suddenly, yellow liquid drips out of the left-most and splashes through the "A" of "AVRO". Another goldfish comes onto the screen, looking at the current action. Then, a load of glass shards with water splashing out fade in. However, they appear to reform together as it appears to be a fish tank that has fallen, in which the action is reversed. Above it, "DE EIGENZINNIGE" types in. The AVRO logo is given a galaxy atmosphere color from the insides with a cyan ball of light on the "O"'s tail. The website URL fades underneath.
  • Actieve: There is a performer holding two wicks, doing a cartwheel, and then starts performing. Towards the center, a yellow bar flashes in and gray dust emerges, which form the AVRO logo. Various yellow beams fade in front of the AVRO logo, in which they go out as the dust leaves the scene, revealing another duplicate of the AVRO logo. Above it, "DE ACTIEVE" types in. The performer leaves the scene as a fire ball of light appears on the "V"'s vertex, causing a spiral effect in return. The AVRO logo is given a galaxy atmosphere color from the insides with a cyan ball of light on the "O"'s tail. The website URL fades underneath.

Technique: Live action and CGI.

Audio: Each of these actions have varying sound effects. Beeps are heard for the texts typing in, ending with a high two-note synth section.

18th ID (September 2, 1999-2006)

Visuals: On a blurred video of the parts of the new AVRO logo moving, there are three squares fading in. The first two squares show scenes from a selected broadcasted program. The slogan "je komt elkaar tegen bij de" fades in at the middle of the screen. The third square starts showing the deblurred video, and there is the "O" of the logo filling the screen. The screen then cuts into the new AVRO logo forming. After the logo's formed, the company's URL fades in at the right-bottom corner.

Technique: CGI by Dann Smit.

Audio: The closing theme of the show, followed by a whoosh, and a guitar/pizzicato tune then plays.

19th ID (2006-August 29, 2010)

Visuals: There is a spherical panoramic shot of a person in a currently involved action over a random place (e.g; a grass field, a beach). The footage is letterboxed in a white background, and the footage contains small multicolored squares that slide randomly from left to right positions. The slogan "Voor een breder beeld" fades in, followed by a set of teal curves that form the AVRO logo on the bottom-right section.

Technique: CGI and live action by Maarten Butter.

Audio: The sound effects from each varying action with a quite ominous synth tune culminating it.

20th ID (August 30, 2010-2014)

Visuals: The screen pans towards the AVRO logo in a translucent blue texture and with dark blue outlines on a white surface, starting from the initial letter. The screen backs out to slightly pan angle towards an average 45°, where the slogan "Verrijk je wereld" is set beneath the logo, and that there are various blue shaded squares sliding and intersecting from left to right randomly.

Technique: CGI by Marc Pos.

Audio: Windchimes are heard from the beginning, with a flourish and a two-note piano tune to end.
