the first day of my hand drafting class in my senior year of college, after the prof taught us how to frame up on the drafting table and went over how to use the tools we'd bought, he had us all take our pencils and make a mark on the top right corner of the vellum. then he walked us through the setup steps - the border, the title block, etc.
and he told us to erase the mark.
when someone - rosie, i think - asked what the mark was for he smiled.
"if you give a novice student an expensive, blank piece of paper, they panic. they think if i start using that i will ruin it. so the first thing i want all of you to do, any time you stare at a blank piece of paper, is to ruin it a little and take the pressure off yourself. pencil erases. anxiety has to be managed."
i hated that man for a myriad of reasons, but that was some of the best advice i've ever been given.
There have been some reblogs of this that assert it works with writing if you keysmash or outline or whatever, and here is the secret, my blueberries; it works with everything.
Afraid of a recipe? Fuck up your prep a little- mildly sloppy knife work is usually easy to fix and ignore. Now something has gone wrong. Nervous about a conversation? Make a purposeful mistake in the beginning that you can correct easily. Move on and keep going. Anxious about public speaking? Screw something up in an easy to ignore way. I like to mispronounce a word.
The trick here is that the call is coming from inside the house. Your brain is the only one who is demanding that you do things perfectly the first time. You can (and will) make a million little mistakes. None of them will be the end of the world. But if what you need is to control the situation, then control it. Ruin it on purpose and then erase the error.

I do not believe in 50 years. I don’t. Maybe I’m in denial but I still kind of don’t believe that I’m actually going to serve out this whole sentence and I think there’s a little reason for optimism in that regard. There is a big movement of support for a political pardon for us from the next Democratic president of the United States. My mother told me that my father said that the next time a Democratic president is in office, he’s going to write him a letter to ask for a pardon for me. And that was the first positive interaction that I’ve had with my dad in five years. And when I heard that, I just burst into tears and, like, just became hysterical for five minutes because it was just the perfection of the absurdity of the time to me. My arch-conservative father, who I can’t really stand to be in the same room as right now because of his transphobia, that he would do this thing, right, like appeal to a Democratic president on my behalf. And it really shows this bipartisan sentiment that this is obviously unjust, this is obviously political. You know, if this arch-conservative and I can find common ground over the belief that this is a political persecution, I think that there’s a very strong chance for some future good thing to come our way out of that.

i have to bring this up every time I see this: nobody died at the protest Autumn Hill was at. A cop suffered minor injuries. Autumn Hill wasn't even present when that happened.
as for the tweet that was screenshotted: her fellow protestors are in prison alongside her, that's why they're not protesting to demand her release. Here's a website with more information about the whole case. We're still trying to bring them all home, regardless of gender
i hate constantly seeing this fucking post on my dash spreading misinformation to make trans women feel like they will be abandoned.
There has been a lot of organising and protesting and fundraising and solidarity around the prairieland defendants, and actually autumn hill has been one of the main people in the spotlights for that, out of all the arrestees.
I dont know what the original post is meant to do except spread misinformation (no cop died) and giving activist left-wing trans women a false sense of abandonment and defeatism.

"So much of the current anti-trans rhetoric hides behind language of “concern.” If you’re a parent or other supportive adult who is earnestly concerned about a young person, that language can make you feel like seeking support that may or does include gender-affirming care for a trans youth isn’t a wise or caring decision. This is the exact reason that language is being used.
Think back to anti-abortion rhetoric, for example, to the bills that force waiting periods (waiting periods we know only make things more difficult for those seeking abortion) deceptively stating they are out of “concern” that the people seeking abortions are rushing their decision. It’s the same thing with trans care; “concern” is used to introduce a (often poorly disguised) barrier to care, in hopes of eventually making that care inaccessible.
I’m going to go over some of the clues that a resource or person’s only concern is directing people away from trans-affirming care and towards harmful, anti-trans spaces or approaches.
I’ll get to the list in a second, but my biggest piece of advice is: If a resource, person, or service presents being trans as the result of trauma, social contagion, peer pressure or of literally anything other than one of the many ways humans experience gender, do not pass go."

I think the problem with Idiocracy's premise (and that of The Marching Morons, its philosophical ancestor) is that it's based on genetic heritability rather than social and cultural. Like generational wealth, education and culture are easier to acquire if your parents have it.
(cf Sesame Street, which was created to provide resources to kids who didn't have the advantages of a prosperous middle class upbringing)
I'm glad you mentioned "The Marching Morons" because I really feel like this is a problem with 20th century science fiction literature in general which inheres into 21st century Hollywood that it's just...not interested in sociological explanations vis-á-vis the more "scientific" biological ones. Thinking in particular of Olaf Stapledon, whose books are a sort of "source text" for the next hundred years of sci-fi and who also depicts pretty much all social changes as being brought about by inherent racial characteristics and various forms of selective breeding.
Interestingly, Stapledon did his own version of Idiocracy way back in 1931 in a chapter of Last and First Men, where he basically depicted such a society as the inevitable outgrowth of the "American" mentality. So okay, maybe he wasn't wrong about everything.

This is the funniest new thing I’ve learned today about the Swedish/Danish cultural exchange.
The Swedes have these adorable cakes called Prinsesstårta aka Princess Cakes.
When I saw this I thought “Oh! I know those! We have the same thing here in Denmark!”
The same thing? These beauties.
I persent to you, the Kajkage aka Kaj Cake. They’re smaller but pretty much made of the same ingredients and they have fan clubs dedicated to finding the ugliest versions at bakeries. They’re named after the frog Kaj from an old children’s show.
I have a strong suspicion some Dane saw a Prinsesstårta and thought “If I added eyes and a mouth…”
