HI NEW FOLKS

boy. there are a lot of you.

I'm Lis, a 1980s-vintage postal worker in Massachusetts who's been in fandom since the late 90s! I’m a parent of two and a union steward and a poll worker. Currently deep in the pitt, animal kingdom, ER, and project hail mary (with a bit of heated rivalry thrown in there). I'm on bsky under the same name!

If you are here for my camboy carter ER/animal kingdom crossover series, all the parts posted so far are on ao3 with a slight delay, and on tumblr here: part 1 part 2 part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11, part 12, part 13, epilogue

If you like weird Wylosyverse crossovers, you will probably enjoy...

-my 50k popecarter series on ao3, where john carter and andrew cody show up for each other on their worst days

-Siria and my flynn carsen/sammy bryant librarian/southland crossover, where sammy gets tapped to be flynn's guardian right after the movies

I tag things that make me hoot aloud with laughter as #this kills the man (i am the man) and i recommend scrolling the tag if you need joy.

I also run the @ofmdcraftfair fundraisers, where we've raised over $200k for immigrants and trans kids since 2025. Follow that if you want to get notified when we're looking for craft donations and when the auctions run!

started to write the next installment in the what we want series, went down a wikipedia rabbit hole, am now reading about the indigenous languages of Taiwan and have written six words

WELL AT LEAST I'M LEARNING

With this sudden amount of conversation of AI-assisted fics and such, is there a specific fic or fics that people are talking about as being "super popular" but obviously AI written? I feel so out of the loop

(Feel free to send me this on anon if you don't want to comment something publicly. I won't publish anything that names an author / fic)

I believe the uptick in conversation is in reaction to this. The Reddit post links to a conversation/document that explains a specific html markers which proves that a piece of text has been copied + pasted directly from Claude AI, and then includes a rundown of how many of these markers were found in a subset of very popular fics in the Heated Rivalry tag on AO3, some of which are extremely popular and successful (as in, very high stats, are talked about and recommended a lot, authors have name recognition).

This marker only exists if text was copied directly from Claude AI into the AO3 text box. It wasn't originally identified in a fandom context and doesn't occur if the text was copied from Claude into ie a Word doc or if a different LLM was used. It also doesn't differentiate between text that was completely generated by Claude and text that was only edited by Claude for formatting or spelling.

The main takeaway from this experiment is, in my opinion, that AI use in fanfiction is widespread and ubiquitous and not detectable to most people. There is no reliable way to tell if a text was written using AI because of how LLMs work and what they were trained on, but a lot of people ARE using AI to write fanfiction and the results are good enough to make AI use rewarding.

The other thing is that it complicates the way fandom as a community talks about AI use in fic. Most people don't want to read fic that uses AI, which disincentivises writers from disclosing their AI usage. People have been using AI accusations to bully and harass authors, which is bad because bullying is bad, but also apparently a lot of authors are using AI and vehemently denying it when asked. Reconciling all of this in a way that satisfies all the different interests and ideals about fandom conversations is going to be really, really difficult and probably get really, really ugly.

sometimes i wonder if we have forgotten that sharing creative work is, fundamentally, a bid for human connection. like I'm not posting art or fic for 'engagement' i'm posting it looking for other sickos to play with! i'd be making it anyway for my own gratification because there's something wrong with me, i'm sharing it hoping we can have something wrong with us together <3

Rain hadn't been in the forecast. They were an hour and fifteen minutes into a two hour hike when the first peal of thunder came. Robby and Jack share a look and then almost at once, a sheet of water falls from the sky. It's almost apocalyptic- the thunder is shaking the sky, the trees swaying around them and the rain falling so hard that you could barely see in front of your face. There is nothing to do but keep going. They start to laugh- helpless, aching laughter, bent double at the waist.

"It's always an adventure," Robby says with a wry grin.

"Only way out is through," Jack replies. They set off.

They don't hurry- there's no reason to hurry. They're far enough away from the trailhead that even if they ran, it wouldn't make a difference. They keep going- alone on the trail, they sing songs, terribly. At one point, Jack starts calling out marching songs that his drill sergeant would use to help them keep pace in BMT. At one point, Robby slips on the slick earth and covers his pants in mud up to the knees. The whole time they're laughing, they just keep laughing.

By the time they make it back to the truck, they're soaked to the bone and shivering, with the biggest smiles on their faces. When Robby removes his boots and what had to be a cup and a half of water pours out, they break into more laughter. It isn't even that funny, but the endorphins, the sheer what the fuck, this might as well happen, of it all- just shines of light of hilarity on everything.

Jack had spare socks and spare shirts in the car, but their shoes and pants are fucked beyond repair. They'll just have to stay wet for the three hour drive back. It was worth it- they had more fun on that hike, soaked through the bone, than on any hike Robby could ever remember.

On the drive back, the weather breaks. The clouds shuffle off, the clear blue sky is revealed and a golden light shines over everything. Classic rock is on the radio; Jack singing along to the guitar solos instead of the lyrics, for some reason- and Robby thinks I could have missed this.

It's the kind of thought that couldn't stay inside, so he says it. "I could have missed this." At Jack's raised brow, he continues. "I almost killed myself. I could have missed this."

"I'm glad you didn't, brother. I'm glad I didn't, too. Would have been a shame to miss today."

"It's beautiful." It sounds stupid, it sounds trite, it would sound absurd to any person other than Jack, but he feels like he's witnessed a miracle. The unexpected summer thunderstorm, the blue sky, the sun shining through the clouds. It's all so beautiful. Somehow, he can actually see it now. He took so much for granted. He never appreciated it, not anything.

He does now, in this moment.

And Robby. Just keeps thinking it. He feels the breeze through his window and hears someone laughing far away and he thinks I could have missed this. He and Jack argue over a game and he thinks I could have missed this. He holds a baby, freshly delivered in his hands. I could have missed this. Even the sadness is a blessing somehow. He almost missed out on so much.

He tries to take a picture any time the thought strikes him, that way he can look back and see the proof that even though things are still so bad sometimes, it's still a miracle that he's allowed to see it at all.

He explains it to Jack and Jack- in the dead-pan way he says jokes with an utter seriousness, like what he's about to tell you is life or death information- says "Every day's a gift, brother. That's why they call it the present." And Robby laughs and laughs and shoves him for being a piece of shit.

"I was trying to be open and honest, brother. Why do you have to ruin everything?" Robby moans, though the smile is still on his face.

"In the spirit of me ruining everything-" Jack takes his hand, pulling him in for a kiss. And oh, Robby wasn't expecting that. Hadn't expected that at all, but it's so good, and how could he have never expected this? It seems so obvious in hindsight.

I could have missed this, Robby thinks, the rest of his life unfurling before him- an open road, a hand in his, sun golden on everything. Even the future sadness, even the future pain. He sees the sun, and even if he doesn't, he knows it's there. And there's a whole life in that, in knowing the sun is there. In knowing he has someone to dance through the darkness with.

He almost missed it. He's so glad he didn't.
