on 2016-04-21 07:22 pm (UTC)I wish I could handle text the way you do. #27, #67, #34, and #73 in particular stand out to me. Do you use text textures, do you make text textures, or do you make all your own text as needed for each icon?

on 2016-04-21 08:00 pm (UTC)I use text textures sometimes, but very rarely. For all those you mentioned (all icons in this post, in fact) I made the text from scratch. Usually, I know what text I want in an icon, so I have to make it myself.
Only when I use text as a decorative element that doesn't really have any special meaning, then I use a texture.
It took me a long time to get to the point where I'm willing to spend the time required to make text that complicated. For example: every time you change the angle, you'll need a new text layer. Meaning the text on 73 consists of five different layers. For the longest time, I didn't bother doing that.
34 and 67 have four text layers (the font I used on 34 has a different baseline for each character, so that was comparatively easier than it looks).
27 was less complicated and has only two text layers.
Long story short: it took me a lot of practice, and it's still a lot of work. But I've gotten very positive feedback for it, and I just love text that looks organic, so I now like doing it. :D
