Movies

More than usual, and one even at an actual movie theater!

Blue Gate Crossing

A 2003 Taiwanese coming-of-age movie about a girl who struggles with her sexuality. It was shown here for Pride month, and it was very... harmless? I enjoyed the vibe, and the characters felt very real. But that was pretty much all it was: vibes. The male lead was very pushy compared to her relative quiet (and occasional unexpected outbursts of courage or random teenage decisions), and it's a dynamic I'm not too fond of. But they were both charming enough that I didn't mind too much. A plus was that it didn't make me nauseous, even though there was a lot of riding around on bikes. I also enjoyed sitting in a movie theatre full of Chinese speakers (although I understood depressingly little of their conversations). The movie itself had engsubs, but the dialogue was relatively easy to understand either way. I found a copy on dailymotion, if you're interested. It wasn't a bad movie, but ... compared to Upcoming Summer, which is nominally the same genre, I prefer Upcoming Summer.

The Sound of Silence

Tan Jianci's latest movie, available on viki. He plays a lawyer and son of two deaf parents, who is caught up in a police case involving the community of deaf people where he grew up. I really liked this movie! It felt like an American movie, from the drama beats to the moral of the story. It played with fake-outs and flashbacks, there were neat scenes with drowned out audio, and I thought the sign language was well used (although I don't know any myself, and of course Chinese sign language for sure is its own beast, so I wouldn't know how realistic it was and how good Tan Jianci was at it or not.)
spoilery opinionThe moral is "trust the justice system". Ha. Ten years ago, I wouldn't have questioned the moral if it had been a US movie, but these days I just can't trust their justice system either - let alone the Chinese one. Especially because the movie was all about con artists and people pulling strings behind the scenes, manipulating and bribing people. This would just as well work with the judges, and poof gone is their case. But apart from my mistrust in the system, the movie itself was really well done.
To my own surprise, I really liked Tan Jianci's look and acting in this movie. I've seen several shows with him, and this was by far the best imho.

The disney+ trawl continued with Moana 2. It wasn't bad, although I thought the songs felt forced. The story itself is fine, although I still don't understand why they took the gardener along. But apart from those minor weird parts, I liked it. The coconut monkeys were the best thing about the movie.

The Long Ballad and two Wu Lei appearances and the new 2PM concert

I finished The Long Ballad

While the ending is not perfectly perfect, it's good enough for me. I will likely rewatch parts of it, I really like how smitten Ashile Sun is with Changge throughout, and I realized how much I missed the show while I was dragging it out because I didn't want it to end. I'm planning on writing up a review for it, because I liked it so much. It's also on viki.

Wu Lei did a Subway endorsement event in Beijing on June 6.

He had to ride an exercise bike and make a sandwich, among other things. It's about 45 minutes of non-stop praise for him plus of course lots of product placement, but I learned some new vocab, and he talked about his ride around Hainan, which was interesting. You can still see his sunburnt arm. And the video is an official one from the live stream, so the audio is good, and the Chinese subs are accurate. Bilibili link (unsubbed).

I had expected there to be more Wu Lei at the Weibo and Douyin movie nights, but he was barely there. The Shanghai International Film Festival featured an actors Q&A for The Decisive Moment, which stars Wu Lei, and which was both very much fun and embarrassing because a) he was extremely (uncharacteristically) nervous, and b) they told more than one story about him doubting his acting choices and crying on set. Oof. Could have gone easier on him. Anyway, the movie looks like a terrible propaganda vehicle for the Chinese aerospace industry, but they kept toting it as the next Wandering Earth. It will be released in August. I am looking forward to it. The 45-minute Q&A is on Bilibili (unsubbed).

I watched parts of the KPop group 2PM's reunion show "Return" at Tokyo dome. I really enjoy watching them dance, they are still great! The whole show (4 hours) is on youtube here or here. I'll surely return to it because new 2pm content is hard to come by.

Love Beyond the Grave

After one false start (most of ep one bored me), it gripped me after all. Dilraba Dilmurat plays the ruler of ghosts who falls in love with a mortal general (Chen Feiyu / Arthur Chen). The first eight eps lured me in with how completely unusual her attitude towards people is. She's very inhuman and uninterested in the short lives of humans, not caring whether they live or die. I adore it for the novelty factor! Then it introduced a mystery around his character, and I want to know where it'll go, so that also keeps me watching. I'm not a fan of the child character or the military tactics stuff, but so far they don't take up too much time so the show holds my attention. Overall, the show is strangely magical and the FL and ML are just very cute with each other. The main plot point is that she can borrow his senses, one at a time, to learn what it feels like to touch/smell/see colors/etc. which she usually can't do. In return, she gives him demonic powers. It doesn't make a lot of sense, it's all played for laughs. I kind of agree with AvenueX's verdict that it could all have been done much deeper, and looked for more meaning there - but it never does. Still, people learning new things is always interesting, even if it's an evil spirit learning what things smell like. But I did think that having her gain sense of touch only for him to lose it at the same time was very sad - a lot of wasted porn potential. ;)) Since I knew that more sense swaps were going to happen, it seemed a little predictable and I dropped it for a week or so. But when I picked it back up, it wasn't quite as predictable as I expected. Also, much much more interesting than the Fireworks show, so I will definitely keep watching.

Love Has Fireworks tropey mc tropeface!

It's on viki. I'm watching this mostly because [personal profile] elenothar is such a huge a Tan Jianci fan, and I like talking to her about things. He plays an investment banker, and so does Wang Churan. Both of them have relationship and money troubles, so they have to share an apartment. The acting from both leads is fine, and their comedic timing is pretty good. The first episodes bored me to death, unfortunately. I was warned about the ai-face-replacement of her ex-boyfriend ahead of time, so I wasn't actually put off that much by it. Now I'm on ep 6/25 and the main couple is starting to get a bit more interesting. I'm not 100% convinced by their dynamic, but they're both fundamentally nice people and I'm less bored now. Everything else is pretty terrible, though, and the humor is ott and not my thing.
ranting
I cannot imagine anything more boring for a modern drama than investment banking. Then there's is every trope imaginable: she gets drunk and he has to save her from thugs. Her workplace nemesis tries to splash her with coffee and he has to grab and twirl her to save her from coffee. They're sitting on a couch, looking at a clip on a phone, and manage to fall over each other into an almost-kiss. His mother destroys his brother's video game character by giving away all his loot and weapons. And all those supposedly humorous scenes are accompanied by screeching trumpet music. I have never heard background music this bad. Sigh.

I started How Dare You, because lots of people seemed to like it, but it's 80% palace drama and 20% romance+transmigration shenanigans, and that ratio does not work for me. I dipped into some of the later episodes to see how the romance develops, and thought that maybe I'd watch the ending, but I didn't even do that. On the whole, it's not for me.

Rewatches/Watchalongs

My two Nothing But You watchalongs are ongoing. One on episode 36/38, almost done, we're slowing down because now we both don't want it to end. /o\ But when we're watching, we're both sighing along happily because the romantic payoff at the end is just *so good*. The other is on 13/38, we've passed the worst hump, and now it's going great again!

I started on my quest to use the trial Disney+ subscription and watched two movies:

Wall-E, which I didn't get through in one sitting. I thought it was supremely illogical, but had some sweet moments. I like robots in general, so it wasn't a complete waste, but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

Coco otoh blew us away. I loved the colors, the hero's journey involved some believable twists and turns, the skeleton animations were simply adorable, and I loved Pepita. A++, thanks to the people at [community profile] tv_talk for the rec.

I started Soul Mate, Ok Taecyeon's new BL on Netflix that I've been waiting for for over a year. So far so good, I liked ep 1. I don't know how BL-y it's going to be, and it starts with kill your gays, too. But I had to laugh at the fact that one of the leads is an ice hockey player. It's going to attract some second-hand Heated Rivalry fame for sure. The other one is a boxer. I like the language mix in it a lot. The first ep is set in Berlin, one of the leads is Japanese, the other is Korean (but can speak Japanese), and the background noise is in German and the leads speak English to some other characters. I'd watch it for that alone. Note: I'm preeeeetty sure it's going to end badly, just from the general vibes (please don't spoil me). I'm not sure I really want to subject myself to more dead gays, but so far it's still on my watchlist.

I watched half of ep 2x02 of Saint Pierre, and am enjoying how comfortable the leads are with each other. I don't think they're supposed to be shipped (she has a boyfriend, he keeps running into all his exes), but I ship them anyway.

I tried Life in Smokey Blue (a Japanese BL), but the characters and story didn't grip me. I'm likely not going to continue with that.

My two Nothing But You watchalongs are ongoing. One on episode 34/38, almost done, but I don't want it to end! The other is on 10/38, and I know that 11 and 12 are the worst eps of the whole drama, but we gotta get through them somehow.

TV new (ongoing)

The next Wu Lei costume drama I tried was The Long Ballad from 2021, starring him as a young general from the grasslands, and Dilraba Dilmurat as the titular Changge. OMG why did nobody tell me that this has a) a cross-dressing FL and b) Wu Lei in "barbarian" braids? I am smitten. The storytelling is quite good, too, the characters are all flawed in different ways, and the action isn't quite as ott tropey as on other shows. Still plenty, the ML has to save the FL again and again, all the usual tropes are there, but she also has agency and gets stuff done on her own. The only thing I really don't like much is that it's obviously cast with only young idol actors who are too young for their roles (especially Wu Lei omg - he was 20!). But that's really my only complaint so far. It's more of a growing-up tale for both leads than a torrid romance, although the romance undercurrents are extremely strong and I like it all a lot. I'm now a little over halfway through, and they have both confessed their love for each other, just not *to* each other. I suspect this drama will not have any kisses, but at this point I am invested enough in their love that I don't mind too much. I have also grown fond of the second FL (played by Zhao Lusi), so I don't need to skip much. I'm going slowly through the drama, because I don't want it to end - that's always a good sign. It's free on youtube or on viki.

I started another period drama - a xianxia that AvenueX recced: A Moment But Forever. It's so over-the-top magical, with lots of very esoteric locations and sparkly visual effects that I am honestly charmed. (I remember Lost You Forever had quite a few of those kitschy locations as well, but even though I loved LYF *a lot*, I always had to laugh at those. This show does it better!) I can't say I liked the ML's looks much at first (he's played by Liu Yuexi), but I got used to it over time and now find he looks okay. He has a nice and natural laugh, too - which is useful in this series, because it's quite humorous. I don't hate the humor in it, either, it's mostly subtle and underplayed, which I generally like. It bored me a bit in the middle there (eps 8-13), but now the ML is slowly starting to a) clue in to the FL's actual identity (she's a goddess but is forbidden from telling him) and b) fall for her, so it's getting a bit more interesting again. The humor has devolved into more ridiculousness, but it's still okay so far. I'm on ep 23 (of 36) now. I really liked the arc where she has to walk through his subconscious: lots of dream sequences and magic fights, and finally the ML gets a bit of face acting to do (he has to be mostly stoic otherwise). I'm enjoying it for the magic and beautiful scenery/creatures, so I don't mind that the romance is glacially slow so far. They're still not together (and may never be? idk?), but I do enjoy the silly xianxia magic, and the steampunk craftsmanship. It's only on iqiyi.

Starlit Bloom is a short noona romance cdrama - 24 eps of about 12 minutes pure running time (without intro/trailer). It's cheaply made compared to the things I usually watch but not as cheap as some old Z1L stuff (*cough*). The acting is so-so, the dubbing is meh, and the story is one long trope. But it's short, so... who cares. It's about a young second-generation rich guy who falls in love with a female entrepreneur. I like the noona aspects, and I hate all the tropes, the usual. It's nothing special, I'm already on ep 18 and think I'll finish it soon. It's on viki.

TV continued

I watched two more eps of Dream Within a Dream. It's starting to bore me a little, I have too few costume dramas to compare it to/enjoy the parody. But it's still good, I'll likely continue. Just very very slowly. :) ...And now I know Liu Yuning (he played the second ML in The Long Ballad), so I have one more reason to continue it.

TV (dropped)

My Youth - a kdrama starring Song Joong Ki, who I really like from Sungkyungkwan Scandal and Vincenzo. I got to episode 5 of 10 when the foreshadowing looked too tragic for me and I stopped. They may just be messing with us, but I wasn't invested enough to find out. It's about child-tv-star-turned-florist Sunwoo Hae (played by Song Joong Ki) and his high school crush/not-crush Sung Je Yeon (Chun Woo Hee) who went on to become an agent working for a production company. It's very slow, lots of childhood and high school flashbacks (which I found mostly annoying because I'm watching for the ML and half the time his character is not played by him...). There are lots of nicely lit shots, and I like it a lot visually. The characters never seem to communicate with each other, often changing the subject mid-sentence or asking questions of each other that are never answered. There's this whole thing about his father remarrying and nobody knows anything about anything, like... does that couple never talk to each other at all? That's a whole pattern on this show, with all the characters. The romance is developing in a (to me) unusual way, with him being infatuated with her but trying not to overwhelm her with it, and her having been infatuated with him in high school but now... over it? Idk? Anyway, it's an unusual dynamic, and the slow, mostly observing, hardly ever explaining pace really worked for me. It's on viki.

Movies

I watched Kpop Demon Hunters! It's as good as everyone says it is. I first thought it was going to go the Zootopia route of prejudice against others, but it went the Frozen route of don't be ashamed of yourself. Despite me constantly trying to compare it to other movies, it felt fresh and fun, and the music was good. Some of the animation went too far into "ugly anime" for me (but the popcorn eyes made me laugh), the tiger and bird otoh were very Ghibli. It was a strange mix but it worked. The boy band seemed to be moving in unnatural ways to me, but apparently that was done on purpose. I didn't find it attractive, in any case, and I usually like kpop boy band dances. Overall a solid rec.

Deep Cover - a British comedy about a group of improv comedians going undercover for the police. It's very absurd, and I loved it. A little dark in places - the film plays it off as funny but I imagine it must be pretty traumatic for the characters. It stars Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean (half of lotr right there) and Nick Mohammed (from Ted Lasso). It's a rec. I also liked the blues guitar soundtrack.

Things I looked at (like 20 minutes each) but did not really pick up (yet) :

Melancholia - noona kdrama with a maths genius student and his teacher (apparently the romance only starts after he's no longer her student but I didn't get very far in). Looks interesting.

I started Glass Heart on Netflix, the Japanese "drummer girl joins a band" thing which friends have recced to me as nice romance and found family. So far I think it's nice, the FL is interesting, and the music is great, and there's lots of rain with beautiful imagery, and a genius composer who I'm not quite sure about whether I like him or not yet. I've only seen a little over half an ep (of 10). I'm too stressed (back at work after my vacation) to have a long attention span :( but I'll definitely try to continue that show.

Bon appetit your majesty - I got through ep one, typical kdrama length of over an hour, so that's not as little as it sounds. So far hasn't gripped me, but I'm willing to try.

Dongji Rescue - it came out on streaming platforms on October 4th, so I now have better quality. But I haven't taken the time to watch it yet.

Saw a trailer for a (non-Asian) m/m drama, called Heated Rivalry. It will air in November, the trailer looks good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADi1iextoUM

There are eight new ones - hover for fandom and pairing:

#12 – Sunlight #18 – Blush #43 – Yellow #54 – Rainbow
#58 – Ash #64 – Lipstick #69 – Flirt #78 – Leather

blathering
I'm especially happy with these:

* the Sunlight one, it says "[you used to] shine so brightly", a comment that the FL made about the ML multiple times in the first few episodes, and here they're kissing in the light of the setting sun, surrounded by beautiful grass.
* the Yellow one, which is from the proposal scene in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love, where he sings a song to her. Someone made a clip on twitter where it's evident that Wu Lei actually sang Coldplay's Yellow to her, but since they couldn't use the song in the final product, they had to write another song (which he sings in the OST).
* the Lipstick one, where Song Sanchuan uses Liang You'an's lipstick to write her name on the alumni board of her university. That's her name as he wrote it, on the icon.
* the Leather one, where Ling Buyi is wearing the leather armor she sewed for him, which everyone thinks is chicken (why?) but it's supposed to be Mandarin duck. The "why a duck" quote is from the Marx Brothers (youtube clip).

There was one more ep of HPI in June. I wasn't sure whether I enjoyed it at first, it takes a while to grow on you, and it ends on a cliffhanger, too. I think they could have moved faster in this last ep, nothing at all moved forward in it, it just heightened the tension. The show is usually better at pacing than this. And now we have to wait until September for the final four eps. At least there's a smallish fandom on AO3 with very good authors who will tide us all over, I'm sure. Even one or two who write in English. \o/

I finished Murderbot. I didn't enjoy the middle episodes as much as the previous three. I didn't hate them, either, but they were definitely farther away from the book, and not in a way that made me go "oh yes, this makes sense". I had difficulty finding the parallels and figuring out why they changed so much in the first place. I did enjoy the Sanctuary Moon self-insert, and hated the added sexual harassment (of Murderbot). All the Murderbot emotional things were good, except for when they intersected with the romance/sex aspects. By ep 6 I really enjoyed it again right through the end. Either I'd gotten used to the many changes by then or they were indeed getting more logial, idk? I thought it had great character development, good novel-divergent choices in service of telling us more about Murderbot's character, and they really stuck the landing. They gave the character of Gurathin in particular more of a bond with Murderbot than I remember from the novellas, but that was definitely one of the choices I enjoyed. You can watch it on Apple or where I live it's on Disney+.

Finally finished the Parallel World watchalong. By the end, it got more and more absurd, trying to squish its remaining plot into the last few episodes, with important plot points happening off-screen and mentioned off-hand, oh, and a two-year time skip. The last ep was even more weirdly paced than the previous ones, and almost none of it made any sense. We're glad we're done with it. We'll start watching When A Snail Falls In Love in July, which is a rewatch for me. I'm interested in how well it holds up compared to when I first watched it seven years ago. My other watchalong has finished HPI (s4 - I'm still in the process of translating the subs for s5), and started North of North. Instant hit, as I expected. <3

I watched two more eps of Love Scout (which I'd started ages ago, in March), the kdrama about a workaholic female boss and her male secretary - and I think I should stop. The main couple is good, but lots of the rest of the show is annoying me. The pacing is very slow in places, both leads have other romantic interests that bother me, and overall it's just not doing what I want it to do. Mostly I just went back to it because I was so tired I couldn't concentrate on anything else.

TV new

I tried the first few minutes of Dept Q, because several people on [community profile] tv_talk mentioned it, but I think it's too dark for me. I might try again at some later point.

I also watched part of the first episode of Phineas and Ferb, a new season came out last week, after a break of 13 years(!). I have never watched this in English before (only ever dubbed on TV), so that'll be a change I'll have to get used to.

I watched all of The Residence within three weeks. It's not something I'd get fannish about, but the humor was very much up my alley and I enjoyed it. It had a weird thing where five minutes into every episode they'd do a recap of the things that had *just* happened. Not even in previous episodes, just in that same episode! I thought it was just cdramas that did weird unnecessary flashback things, but that was noticeably weird, too. But on the whole, the show is a solid rec. It's a homage to old detective stories, with a beautifully eccentric detective played perfectly by Uzo Aduba, and just overall very funny and very well cast. It's on Netflix.

Lastly, I watched the first few eps of The First Night With The Duke, which is a transmigration kdrama with Ok Taecyeon - he's the duke who falls in love with a secondary character instead of the 'planned' female lead, and the transmigrated fan first tries to fix the narrative and then of course falls in love with him, too. Taecyeon is the only reason I've watched even a few eps of it. It's not terrible, but also not really my thing, and of course the historic kdrama costumes don't do anyone any favors, not even Taecyeon. Not all episodes have aired yet, it's on viki. Im really looking forward to his BL, which is slated for August, if they don't push it back, so that's not too long now.

I saw Flow at the theater, the Latvian Oscar winner for animated movie. It was brilliant. I'm not sure I would have voted it higher than Wild Robot, but they're both extremely good, definitely deserving of the Oscar. The plot is a bit hard to describe, since there is no dialogue at all, and some things (both what's happening in nature and character motivations) are unclear. From what I gather, the pov cat character lives in a world that regularly sees floods, and we follow the cat through the current flood period. It meets other animals, and together they scavenge a boat to ride out the worst. There are no humans visible anywhere, but lots of artifacts, houses, and cities. The animals are shown as very individual, each with their own characteristics, but the main theme of the movie is how they bond and help each other. The music score is very important, since there is no dialogue, and except for one annoyingly tense section, I thought the music was excellent. The movie leaves a lot of room for interpretation - it makes you think, and that's always a good thing.

Finally, there were new episodes of Doctor Odyssey! \o/ The first two were unusually gory, but also nicely suspenseful, which (though slightly illogical) totally worked for me. The next eps were a little more fluffy again, I just wasn't all that happy with the main themes: who's the baby daddy and surprise!alcoholism, and ep 11 (the crossover ep with one of the 911 offshoots) was the worst ep of the whole season for me. Still loving the throuple in general, and it keeps me watching. No decisions about a season 2 have been made yet.

I picked up some things again that I'd dropped in the middle, like We are Lady Parts (now on 2x04), especially loved Bisma's Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Awesome. I'll probably watch the rest of season 2 soon.

And Somebody Somewhere, of which I finished season 2. I thought they glossed over the conflict between Joel and Sam a bit too quickly, but I'm really loving Tricia this season.

I'm still doing the rewatch of HPI, now almost done with season 2, and my co-watcher has hopped onto the ship! \o/ In the last week of March, there was an event in Lille, SeriesMania 2025, where they showed the season five premiere, and people loved it. I'm very much looking forward to get to see it, too (airdate is May 15). I would love to find a fannish place to discuss the show, but only found a twitter community. :( I'm reading my way through the French fic on ao3 in the meantime.

TV new

In a very weird coincidence, I happened upon North of North, a very female comedy series, most of the characters and all producers are women. It's a series made by Inuk people about Inuk people, filmed on location *very far North*. It's a resounding rec. Siaja is a great character. In fact, the whole town of Ice Cove is a wonderful mix of characters, some loving, some eccentric, some traumatized. The show's humor is always on point, and even the embarrassing foot-in-mouth moments are played with so much love and charm that they don't feel squicky. It came out on Netflix on April 10, I'm planning on writing up a quick rec post for it soon.

Since I saw a lot of people talk about Severance's new season, I started the show, too. From the beginning - I'd never seen it before. The first ep was a little too slow for my liking in places - especially the dinner party omg. But apart from that, this looks very much up my alley. I like psycho horror (without jump scares) and bureaucratic dystopia in general. I stopped again when it got scary around ep 4. I'm not sure I'm up to that at the moment. It's very good, just a bit too heavy for me right now.

I started Love Scout (because I hated Filter, but needed something fluffy and Asian, or, idk why), and hated the first episode, but liked the second. I'll keep going if I need more fluff. I am once more reminded how much I don't like the directorial decision to go into slomo as soon as the leads have anything resembling a romantic moment, underscored by significant music intended to make the viewers look up from their knitting/phone/conversation with grandma so they don't miss the hug. *sigh* Apart from that, I do like the genderswapped setup with her being the workaholic boss and him being the doting father and secretary. That was almost four weeks ago already, though, and I haven't gone back to it... we'll see.

The best new thing I tried is The Pitt. Unfortunately, the camerawork makes me nauseous. That's a pity, because I really like it a lot. I went through it in 20-minute chunks, which kept the nausea at bay so far. I got about halfway through (7 of 15 episodes) in two weeks. I can see how the plot could be good (I have one guess at what's going to happen later in the day so far), although I don't like the setup of it only covering one day. There can perforce not be much character development in such a short time, at most "from flashbacks to now". And I'm usually always invested in shows for the characters and don't care as much about the plot. Despite all the gore and stress and death, it's comfort viewing for me, weirdly. :D Being Noah Wyle's age, it feels like we both started out on ER and have now come full circle, and that's just so beautiful. (I didn't dare look up interviews with him yet on why he picked the role, because everyone keeps saying that there are huge spoilers everywhere, so I'm being cautious. I did notice that he co-produced the show and wrote some of the episodes.) But it feels like coming home. <3

Here's the new table, crowdsourced by four makers. We changed a third of the prompts from last year. I'm sticking with my December to November schedule, and I made quite a few icons since the start of December, so the table is almost a quarter filled already.

ETA: November 29 I finished the table with only one day left! \o/

This month's theme at [community profile] monthlyinspo is One With Nature, and I chose the easiest way to go about this: screencaps and photos with scenery. Most of them are from the newest cdrama I'm following, Lost You Forever. The rest are Zhu Yilong. ;)
