Canada Successfully Exploring for ‘White’ Hydrogen Gas, a Clean Power Source Beneath Existing Mines

Scientists in Canada have discovered that ancient underground rocks are naturally producing hydrogen gas—and lots of it, and it may be everywhere—and it may be cheap.

The rocks could offer another source of clean energy known for emissions accounting purposes as “white hydrogen,” a largely unexplored and hidden underworld resource with the potential to help power industries and remote communities while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

This could be useful.

I do not like the books (sorry folks) but loved the musical. So, this year I bought the movie 2 pack.

Folks, I thought I couldn't love anything more than the stage production. I was WRONG. I love the additions, the expansion on characters, and OH MY GOD they went there!

Today is cloudy, humid, and hot. It rained off and on this morning, then poured during part of today.

We went out to an art fair, so I haven't fed the birds yet. I bought a tiny ceramic dish on a stake that will serve as another bug watering dish. :D

On the way home, I spotted a red-headed woodpecker. They used to be common here, but nowadays I mostly see downy woodpeckers. It makes sense that they would be active now, because of all the storm-damaged trees attracting colonizing insects. There was a small branch down in our driveway that had clearly been killed by the previous storm because all its leaves were already brown.

EDIT 7/11/26 -- I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

Things I wish I had time for: writing a proper post about media/my life.

Things I actually have time for: this brief post to ask about very practical travel considerations.

So, I tried to make this happen last year and it didn't work out, and it will likely still not work out this year either, BUT I am very keen on trying.

For work/family/sanity reasons I might be in the US at some point during August-September (yes, as in a few weeks from now). If this happens, I might have discretionary time to visit friends, whether locally or in some other area of the continent, so would love to hear from you if you'll be around and want to meet up during that time.

The one location I'm guaranteed to visit, if I go, is New York City, so please let me know if you're there and would want to meet up!

If elsewhere in the US (or Canada) and want to meet, let me know as well! I haven't been to that part of the world in over a decade so, no idea who's where these days/would want to meet me.

We left Edinburgh yesterday to take the train to Manchester, then switch to a smaller train to get to Chester to stay with old friends of the Stroppy One’s. A woman next to us on the smaller passed out from the heat! All the passengers around her swarmed to help her up, offer water, and so on. I’ve been having to chose between having the protection a sun hat offers vs. the hat trapping heat against my scalp. Today, since the weather is “only” going to be around 85, I’m going to risk the hat. Because today is going to be wandering around Chester, including stopping at another Marks & Spencers so I can buy more bras, because well-made bras in large cup sizes for approximately $40? Unheard of.

Last night I took a calculated risk: the dessert was Eaton Mess, which is part meringue, which of course is made with a small amount of cornstarch. Guess what? I DIDN’T GET A MIGRAINE. Yet one more strike against the US food supply.

Ugandan Coffee Growers Shrug Off Drought Thanks to Regenerative Agriculture

Among the rolling hills of Uganda’s Masaka region, robusta coffee plants are producing larger, tastier yields thanks to a pilot program utilizing regenerative agriculture to battle droughts or erratic rainfall.

A catch-all term for a variety of growing techniques as simple as mulching to as complex as cover cropping, regenerative agriculture is especially useful in the coffee belts where nutrient-poor tropical soils and heavy rainfall make erosion a real threat to productive crops.

Of course regenerative farming works. Nature knows how to compensate for common problems. Humans just need to quick fucking up those processes.
