like. divided shots are a really useful tool when used intentionally. like breaking bad does this all the time.

and it rules. but it’s done for a reason; it’s meant to show us the divide between walt and his family in a literal sense by framing the shot this way.

but it’s such an odd choice to me for the ghost monument because like… this is the beginning of their brand new adventure? they’re new friends on a space adventure and the episode has made no attempt to establish a divide between the doctor and her companions in any way. in fact she was just really emotionally honest with them.

compare to this similar scene of bill seeing the tardis for the first time:

it’s a wide shot, like the ghost monument, showing us the scope of the tardis. but i think it very intentionally does not place the center of the console in between the doctor and bill — they’re on the same side!

so why divide thirteen and her companions? it’s just such an odd choice to me for the ghost monument and i’m really curious about why they made it.

i think a lot about how especially rose’s exit is not a literal death but a figurative one. to me, pete’s world is an afterlife. she’s functionally dead to the doctor and to her home universe, explicitly being “on the list of the dead”. you could get so fucked up and interesting with this…. she is existing in a world she was never intended to be in, where she knows like 5 people max and to the rest of the world she came from nowhere. she’s not supposed to be here and the world around her knows it. yknow.

like the concept of. you can’t always help everybody. but that’s okay, because if you help even one person, you will have changed their life for the better.

it’s always better to be kind. because the little things you do, holding the door open, helping some kid find their mom, shoveling your elderly neighbor’s front steps, anything. those things mean the world to the people you help.
