My feelings on ten's return was happy then annoyed then happy again when I saw the teaser. Like it looks like it'll be atleast interesting and seeing that Ncuti Gatwa is there makes me happy. I'm excited to see what's going on with his Doctor

yeah, like, itโ€™s a combination of a lot of things, including but not limited to:

  • ncuti was busy during the first block of filming and this episode Needs to be out by a certain date
  • itโ€™s an anniversary episode. anniversary episodes always bring back old doctors thatโ€™s just how it works
  • DT is back for three episodes to bring viewership back because the current ratings are worse than they were when the show got cancelled the first time, and then NG takes over full time, in addition to ncuti being in the anniversary specials himself
  • this is using a popular doctor to give the new one a leg up. i donโ€™t think thatโ€™s necessarily a bad thing, esp after a period of the show that people gave up on
  • we get to see DONNA again. i would do anything to see her again
  • doctor who is a stupid show where stupid things happen and this is literally just a marketing gimmick.
  • again i must quote descartes:

itโ€™s not that deep. if youโ€™re concerned about rtdโ€™s handling of a black character given his history on DW, i totally understand that and i sympathize. but also itโ€™s been 15 years and i think itโ€™s fair to hope heโ€™s grown as a person and as a writer since then. we are 13 months out from this episode and we know next to nothing about it. itโ€™s not worth catastrophizing the way some fans are. iโ€™m choosing to be optimistic because i really have not been this excited about doctor who in YEARS and i like that feeling.

maybe thisโ€™ll turn out to suck. but maybe it wonโ€™t! and ncuti himself seems nothing but excited and happy about this. david tennantโ€™s said heโ€™s โ€œscarily goodโ€ as the doctor.

watch this video and tell me youโ€™re NOT excited out of your gourd to see him in action. i have a lot of hope for this next chapter of doctor who, and i hope you do too :-)

okay can we talk about how 13's writing was misogynistic yet or is it too soon

  • didn’t want to sexualize her, swung so far in the other direction she wasn’t allowed to show the romantic side of herself, like, at all, which makes her Different from the other doctors and also made thirteen x yaz so hard for me to believe or get into at all
  • she constantly just. doesn’t know things?? she uses the sonic for EVERYTHING why can’t she just know things sometimes. she always feels like she’s out of the loop. here’s a post that articulates this rlly well by akajustmerry
  • the constant running joke about people thinking graham was the doctor. it would have been fine once but like. why so many times. even stephen fucking fry did it??
  • she didn’t get to be vindictive or cruel or angry like the other doctors did. she had some moments, yes, but it’s done in a different way than when the (i am doing big airquotes bc the doctor isn’t cis ever) “male” doctors got to, and it’s just really obvious it was done that way bc 13 was played by a woman
  • and when she DOES do bad things the narrative is usually on her side. the doctor is a bitter old hypocrite, we as the audience are meant to think they’re in the wrong often. but when 13 does something awful (like WEAPONIZING RACISM????) the story’s just like. yeah go girlboss!!! with no examination of her actions. the narrative is afraid to challenge her!!
  • her whole dynamic with the master was just. so awful. he always, always had power over her, usually with her tied up, forced to kneel, or helpless in some other way
  • whatever the hell was going on in the witchfinders.
  • she’s way more passive than any other doctor, and way more prone to apologizing. i would also argue they made her seem kind of dumb sometimes–a lot of the decisions she makes and the ways she approaches problems don’t make any sense for her at all
  • she’s just. so shallow as a character. i cannot name a single unique personality trait of hers other than “female” and it’s exhausting. the problem with having so many companions is that none of them ever got to develop into a real character.
  • even the attempts to give thirteen flaws are so flat because they can’t commit to making her Actually nasty so it’s instead something like “heehee I’m just socially awkward”
  • the writing played it SO safe in terms of characterization. it’s like, they made her a woman, so they don’t want to make her too flawed because then it looks like they’re saying women are bad or something. but instead they just sidelined her and didn’t let her Be The Doctor

i might blame a lot of this on just kind of stupid writing, but dumb writer = bad writing = accidental misogyny. and accidental misogyny is still misogyny.

i'll probably think of more later but for now. take this if you have anything to add go ahead if you're going to argue with me about these points. consider not doing that. i'm tired of ppl licking chibnall's shoes. doctor who op delia.txt meta
