Prince died yesterday. I'm sad about that -- I loved him. Saw him in concert in HS. Blech. I should listen to some of his music today. I just tossed my turntable, too -- it didn't work anymore, which is too bad, because I have Purple Rain on vinyl.

Tried to text/call MOB to tell her, since she doesn't see FB or the internet as much as I do. No response. No calls going through. I figured she hadn't paid the bill, but as it turns out, she got a new phone. I hope this means that her financial situation is turning around now that her bf is working.

I'm working remotely today -- I've actually only been in the office once this week. Took Wednesday off because I wasn't feeling great in the morning, but was fine later in the day. Worked in Lisle yesterday but sneezed all day. Home today, stuffed up and a bit coughy, to keep my germs to myself but also need to get some decluttering done at lunchtime.

Tomorrow is Ed's son William's first communion. I'm sure I'll cry. :P But we're bringing some things over to Sil's for the dinner (soda, wine, etc.), and Ed needs to wear a suit, so we've got some stuff to get done tonight. Then tomorrow morning, we're off to the great butcher shop in Elburn to buy stuff for the cookout Sunday. That's for Ed's mom's 80th birthday. So that means prep, cleaning, shopping, getting ready, etc. Fun weekend, but busy.

It's my mom's b'day tomorrow -- Phil and I took her out to dinner on Wednesday and then we all saw Joelle's musical. It was really fun, and the show was great -- The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Joelle plays Marcie Park. :) Tomorrow I'll bring my mother some flowers.

I got my cap and gown on Wednesday as well -- and got called "Dr. Sandler" by a stranger for the first time. :) That was weird in a good way. I got an extra tassel so I can give one to SAT (former coworker) -- he's helped me with this whole thing more than anyone else.

Speaking of former coworkers, more layoffs at Siemens. From what I can find out (meaning, according to Duane), 2 project leaders (Dave O., and Chris W.) and two writers (Russ and Lisa). Ugh. Nobody's happy there anymore, from what I can tell.

Ed has decided he wants to go to Yellowstone this summer and Maine this fall. Maine sounds wonderful -- I'd love to see more of the East Coast in general.

Okay, time to find food.

Job

Okay, all is well with the new job. The snafu was really just the basic sign-offs that still needed to be done. The woman who runs Tech Pubs (my boss here, I guess, but not my direct supervisor, I don't think) lives in Tel Aviv (and is a flautist, I found out yesterday), so that added to the delay -- time difference, etc. I started yesterday (Thursday), which gave me three extra days to work on the dissertation and RO, and I did. I did some good work on both. I plan to finish RO stuff this weekend.

Anyway, the job is good so far (day 2). ARRIS -- they make modems and routers for companies like Motorola and Comcast. Getting settled, have a desktop computer, got all my access information, have a few snacks in my cube, met some people, even had cake for a retirement. Got Putty and Dropbox downloaded. Building seems fine, Lisle, not a bad commute, people are very nice, they all seem to have a sense of humor. Free soda, small gym, seems very laid back (but very deadline-driven). No projects yet, just familiarizing myself with the existing documentation and learning Author-It, which I've never used. The two writers I have been meeting with the most are both working remotely today (once a week, which I will do as well, maybe starting next week).

Still have to finish my employee packet and insurance information for Aptara, the recruiting company I am an actual employee of. :P

Back to it.

If any of you work at larger companies with more than one level of job title
for your tech writers, would you comment, please?

What are the job titles, are they sideways moves, or promotions? What "ladder" do your tech writers usually take when moving up? Or do they move to other positions?

We have associate tech writer, tech writer, and senior tech writer. Most of us
are seniors, and we want to design a "principal" job title/description, and are looking for examples from other companies to bolster our argument. Thanks!

Yesterday was fun! For the most part, I should say.

I didn't get any work done, but nobody really does on holidays like that. I did a few things in the morning, and then went trick or treating with Alice and Kristine. Then Alice and I went to the main building and wandered around some more. Lots of really cool costumes and good conversation. :)

Then we had lunch with Bill, got a few more things done at work, and then headed out to Udo's to see his decorations. He usually goes crazy with stuff (I've seen photos), but this year he didn't. Diane wasn't feeling well, and they got a late start, so they just did a little bit.
:( I felt bad that we showed up there when they were't outside doing stuff, but he knew we wanted to stop by (he could have emailed saying we're not doing it this year) so I can't really feel bad about it. We chitchatted for a minute or two and then left. I went home and did the trick or treating thing, answering the door.

While I was waiting for George to show up, [livejournal.com profile] cpk called me. He wanted to relate a few things that his shrink had said during therapy, before he forgot to, and he wanted to apologize, or at least say he was wrong, for having said a few somewhat hurtful things to me a little while ago. They weren't horrible, they were his opinion, and certainly valid if they were his true feelings, but they weren't, and he knew they bugged me, so he called to say he was wrong. It was nice to talk to him, and it felt like friends, not exes, though it was very weird to hear his voice after over a year. Good, but very weird.

Then George showed up and he and I went to karaoke for the halloween party and costume contest. The winner was "Annie Bananie", the chick who sings "What a Wonderful World" and "Hello Dolly" with a very deep voice. Her costume was a very cool and sort of creepy upside down clown. :)

We had fun, I sang three songs, we talked to people, we ate pizza, and then we came home. Kids were asleep and we had a nice night. He left at 10 this morning, which is super late for him, but I have a ton to do today so at least we got up before noon (I need more sleep then he does and I tend to make up for it on weekends).

Tonight is Mike and Monica's party...not sure if G will go with me. He might not be ready to go anywhere until 7 or later, so I might go myself for a while and then meet him later. Jon's at Barb's so maybe we'll do something with them. Who knows? It's nice to have options, which also include sitting around at home and vegging. :)

We've offshored some of our development and writing to India. I am one of the contact people for our writer in India. She'll be here for three weeks, starting after Thanksgiving, and I'm in charge of scheduling her training/meetings/projects, as well as sending things over to her between now and then. I'm not exactly "in charge" of it; that's more Kristine's job, but I am her "writing contact" here in the states. Mimi will likely do more actual training, at least on Documentum and Epic Editor, but I'll handle the process stuff, and I'll walk her through her first full project.

I'm reading through a Power Point presentation about the cultural differences between the US and India. It's very interesting, and so far, I'm actually identifying more with the Indian view on time (go figure: my time management skill don't really cut it here in the states. Maybe I just live on the wrong continent).

I know at least one of you has spent time working in India, and in fact is THERE RIGHT NOW. Any tips would be appreciated, both for working with offshored employees, both while they are stateside for training, or afterwards, AND for dealing with cultural differences.

:)

I am allergy-ridden today. I think. Stuffed up, a bit sneezy, and my throat is icky and uncomfortable, though I guess I can't say "painful" exactly. My house is super dry but I started the humidifier up again. And I might just have a cold. Blah.

Going to the gym today to just do some elliptical trying-it-out. Then I think I'll sit in the hot tub or sauna or both.
