I'm back from the land of Waffles and the land of a Billion Bicycles. Much Belgian Beer was drank, many waffles were ate, and eventually there was even a cheese tasting in Amsterdam. The stack of paper pamphlets accumulated from various art galleries is almost two inches thick. Without obsessing over the question too much, I would say my favourite gallery was S.M.A.K in Ghent. It made me feel excited about contemporary art in a way that I haven't experienced since leaving art college.

I can verify that Dutch people are very, very TALL. I ended up at the opening of a Anton Corbijn photography exhibition and it wasn't even a case of me staring at the backs of people's heads since the very top of my head seems to be level with your average Dutch person's shoulders (and that was when I was wearing two inch heels*!) Also, um, this might be too much information, but some of the toilets in Amsterdam left my feet dangling.

*My new yellow shoes from Dr.Adams. I can't seem to find a picture of my pair on the internet. In other shoe news, at the Corbijn opening there were two women wearing shoes with the backwards heel. It seems that shoes are something I am excited about these days. This is endlessly funny to me because I am the last person who would ever have predicted it.

In fandom news, I'm going to do the Man from UNCLE 30 day meme as proposed by [personal profile] georgiesmith here, and I am hopefully participating in [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo for the first part of July...um, before I go on a trip around the Baltic states. I swear, my life is not a perpetual holiday.

In Bruges, waiting for the rain to stop. In spite of the weather, Bruges is much nicer than I was expecting it to be. I thought it would be really touristy and twee...and it is, but somehow that isn't as off-putting as I was expecting. It doesn't compare with Ghent though. Ghent was fabulous.

I was planning to go to Oostende today to frolic on the beach and visit the Ensorhuis & Fort Napoleon, but it is Monday so the Fort is closed, and a rainy day at the beach doesn't really appeal. That leaves me with...a walking tour in the rain this afternoon and the Belgian Beer Pub Crawl. I'm not sure about the pub crawl. At the last Belgian bar I was in I was a bit daunted by the 100+ beer selection, so I asked the bar tender for a recommendation. He told me he was going to recommend the beer with the highest alcohol content so that I would get drunk quickly and then sleep with him. Charming.

On that note, when I have more time I should really do a post about how dramatically clothes affect the assumptions people make about you. Until last year I used to mostly slum around in jeans and t-shirts but lately I've been dressing quite smartly. The difference in how I am treated wasn't so noticeable in Edinburgh, but in Europe? Men are generally more respectful, and so are women in a more subtle way. However, I am suddenly fairly unapproachable to many of the North American college age guys who would usually have talked to me in the hostels. Oh, yeah, and if you dress stylishly, everyone will assume that you can speak French, even when you tell them otherwise.

In any case, it's been interesting.

What a day!

It started with breaking the heel on my favourite pair of shoes and ended with an unsatisfactory haircut. The shoes are probably beyond repair, but at least the haircut isn't a total disaster... just unsatisfying. I left the salon feeling like I needed a haircut and when I got home I ended up doing some further trimming on some of the strands behind my ears. It will probably be another two months before I can justify another salon visit. Ack.

It was all because I wanted a haircut before heading off to Belgium tomorrow. I know, holiday again. There was this whole thing at work where I didn't get to take any holiday for the first 6 months because I was on a temporary contract, and then when I changed to a yearly contract they turned around and told me I had to take ALL my accumulated holiday in the short period before the end of June, and that if I didn't it wouldn't carry over and I wouldn't get any pay for it. Bastards.

I'm going for a little jaunt around Brussels-Antwerp-Ghent-Bruge and then on to Amsterdam. Home on the 27th, but my laptop is coming with me so I'll be online as hostel wifi permits.
