Happy May Day!

I'm all moved into my new flat. I absolutely love it. It's not perfect - it gets a lot of noise at all hours of the night from the bar across the street, and unfortunately someone once tried to paint the bathroom sink and tub with wall paint, so that is a peeling, rusty mess, but the light in all the rooms is very good, and it feels so luxurious to have all this space that is mine and mine alone. ♥

Now I just need to buy some furniture...

I've got my internet hooked up, so I am now all caught up with Mad Men! I have lots to say about it, but I'm going to save it for a separate post.

Currently reading Connie Willis' Oxford WWII time travel pair Blackout and All Clear. I got a little frustrated with the story at the start of All Clear when the characters start behaving stupidly and withholding information from each other (presumably this was necessary to keep the plot going, but so irritating). Thankfully, I'm back to enjoying it. I can't wait to get home from work so I can finish it! It's inspiring me to get back to work on that Man from UNCLE time travel fic I was writing.

Speaking of Man from UNCLE...

Have some surprise Man from UNCLE pictures that turned up on a photo community that I watch... )
Apparently Bertie Wooster says "What ho!" a lot, but Don Draper just says "What?" That's how you know he's been caught out in a lie.

I spent all yesterday parked on the couch getting reacquainted with the internet and mainlining Season 2 Mad Men episodes. I still don't want to move. It shouldn't be possible to feel both tired and restless at the same time, but that's me right now. I keep pausing the dvd player to poke at fanfic and refresh dreamwidth, but there's not much interesting happening on the internet. Somebody should post a long brilliant Man from UNCLE fic for me to read.

I know you are all desperate to know what I think of the Mad Men barbies...

They're pretty hideous so I guess I should be happy that Peggy was spared... but I'm not. In fact, I'm a little bit outraged by that. Peggy might be more of a Skipper than a Barbie, but she is still the main female character! Snubbed by Mattel, the nerve!

Well, that was a disappointing weekend. My brilliant Bonfire Night plans got all rained out and then, for added insult, it rained all day Saturday too.

The bad weather did have the happy result of giving me a chance to get all caught up on Mad Men. As far as I am concerned this has been the strongest season to date. I haven't been reading people's posts about it because I was keen to avoid spoilers, but wow, already I feel like I should do a rewatch with written commentary. I have so much to say about this season that I can't even think of where to start unless I approach it episode by episode.

Man from UNCLE on Mad Men! How come nobody told me about this?

To be honest, I didn't find Christina Hendricks notably attractive when she was on Firefly.

But as Joan Holloway on Mad Men?

I struggled to narrow it down to just 50 pictures... )
I just spent most of my morning rereading "Too Many Women" in preparation for my bookclub post on [community profile] milk_and_orchids.

Last time I read it was before Mad Men even existed, now when I read it the entire thing presents to me like Archie Goodwin's day at Sterling Cooper.

Who else is watching Mad Men?

I just finished the first season. I recommend it on the basis of the 1960s women's undergarments. Also, the colours! Visually it's simply stunning, unfortunately all the male characters make my skin crawl. I spend half of every episode wishing that one of those pretty secretaries would whip out a handgun and start shooting kneecaps.
