So [livejournal.com profile] cabari has abandoned me.

While she was visiting we drank enough beer to make Nero Wolfe proud and I fangirled (verb!) but apparently not enough because I still need to talk about Archie Goodwin.

With [livejournal.com profile] cabari I squealed a lot over how all of Archie's significant relationships are left undefined. At one point I was trying to quote a bit of dialogue in one of the books where Wolfe is speaking and Archie keeps interrupting. I finally found it in "Black Orchids":

"Ask Fritz, my cook. Ask Theodore, my gardener. Ask you my-"
"Right hand?"
"No."
"Prime Minister?"
"No."
"Pal?"
"No!"
"Accomplice, Flunkey, Secretary of War, Hireling, Comrade..."

And in "The Black Mountain", which I'm reading now, Archie has to pretend to be Wolfe's son because society lacks a word that describes their relationship...

...I should probably just suck it up and start writing fanfic.

So...

The Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout are swell. That's right, 'swell'. I pick up slang from books I'm reading. Doctors claim the only thing to be done is to turn a deaf ear and pray it passes quickly. Er, given how many Nero Wolfe books Stout wrote, I wouldn't hold out much hope for that. However, I'm going through them at a terrific pace so no need to worry.

Tomorrow I intend to run around to five other bookstores in an attempt to get the next title that the library doesn't have. Obsessed? You betcha. I can't help it. Archie Goodwin is possibly the best narrative voice I've ever come across. I'd marry him if I believed in marriage. And, er, if he wasn't fictional.

I should probably mention that the A&E mini-series starring Maury Chaykin and Timothy Hutton is also very good. Earlier today it occurred to me that Timothy Hutton is far more attractive then Callum Keith Rennie. *hides from wrath of friendslist*
