I don't know how it happens, but every so often I forget that Nero Wolfe is my most favourite fandom of all the fandoms ever. Fortunately whenever I forget, I get to rediscover it again and again and it never stops being the most fabulous thing of all time. &hearts

I'm rereading Some Buried Caesar and it would be pretty much non-stop squeee from cover to cover if Diane Mott Davidson hadn't written a crap introduction and shoved that in front of it. I am against defacing library books; however, I am seriously contemplating removing those pages with an exacto knife. All she did was summarize the story in a way that spoils the plot and kills half the humour. I would be doing the people of Edinburgh a favour; unfortunately my inhibitions against harming a library book are probably too strong to be overcome.

I had about three hours of data entry to do at work today and while doing I amused myself by imaging a crossover between Nero Wolfe and Man from U.N.C.L.E. Archie and Napoleon would get along fine discussing the finer points of male attire, at least until Illya showed up at which point Archie would get xenophobic and Illya would get acerbic and it would all go to hell.
I just spent most of my morning rereading "Too Many Women" in preparation for my bookclub post on [community profile] milk_and_orchids.

Last time I read it was before Mad Men even existed, now when I read it the entire thing presents to me like Archie Goodwin's day at Sterling Cooper.

I'm afraid I've fallen hopelessly behind on the [community profile] milk_and_orchids Nero Wolfe reread. I tried to get Some Buried Caesar from the library on my way home from work, only to discover that Central is closed for a "Spring Holiday." Sigh. Even if it wasn't there is no way I'll be able to reread in time to add anything to the conversation. At this point I might as well stick with At Swim, Two Boys. I bought a secondhand copy from The Winding Stair and started it on the flight back from Ireland. I wasn't really expecting to be moved by it, seeing as I read it in 2002 and it didn't make much of an impression on me...

>>Fastforward to this morning when I almost made myself late for work by doing the 'just one more page' thing. It seems a little bit silly to say that four days in Ireland made such a difference, but, whatever, if people aren't allowed to be touched by their experiences they might as well stay home.

Anyway, right now my plan is to make a pot of coffee and spend the afternoon reading until it is time to go climbing. &hearts

Thank you for the paid time, [personal profile] damned_colonial!

I haven't been very successful at keeping my 3W4DW resolution to update daily, but I have a good excuse. I've just had a FANTASTIC fangirl weekend with [personal profile] soupytwist. There was much squeeing over the Nero Wolfe books, followed by a long discussion of the Rentboy!fic that I am working on. I've missed having someone around to talk to about fannish stuff.

For non-fandom funtimes we went up Arthur's Seat – hahaha - and saw the stuffed and mounted corpse of Dolly the Sheep. She rotates on a pedestal. Seriously, Scotland, don't ever change!

I also managed to introduce Katie to Man from UNCLE. Stay tuned for a list of fanfic recs!
My flat is out of coffee. I should probably drag myself off the sofa and go out and rectify this state of affairs, but without caffeine I'm having a hard time finding the motivation to move.

I'm frustrated with writing right now. Last week I spent hours and hours poking at my WIPs and I haven't got very much to show for it. I want to FINISH something. I have EARNED it. But instead it seems like once I stall on a story, I might as well clear the shortcut right off my desktop because it will be a good three months before I manage to get it moving again. It's very frustrating.

On the non-frustrating front: I've been making great strides at the indoor climbing wall. Overhangs are my specialty. I knew all those push-ups and chin-ups that I incorporated into my workouts would one day be useful for something. Mentally I may be going a bit stir-crazy, but physically I feel gloriously strong these days.

Reading The Red Box aka the one where Archie manages to avert a Relapse! LOVE!

...Okay, that's it, going out for coffee now.
[community profile] milk_and_orchids is making me soooooo happy! It's been a while since I've done any hardcore squeeeing over the Nero Wolfe mysteries.

Except now I can't get enough, so I'm forced to take the books all out of order. I just finished reading Might as Well Be Dead. If I needed any support in my belief that Rex Stout is crap at making up plots, this book would be it. It actually makes me feel better about my approach to writing fanfic - I have my story almost done except for the, um, actual murder mystery part. The thing is, I don't care whodunit. I just need something to hang all my lovely character development and relationship dynamics on.

Here's a quote from Might as Well Be Dead that demonstrates one of the things I love about this series:

"You don't know Mr. Goodwin, but I do. He will manage it so that no resentment will bounce to you. He is remarkably adroit at drawing resentment to himself to divert it from me or one of my clients."

...and this is exactly what Archie has already been doing for 25 books by playing the wise-cracking tough guy. I mean, fanfic writers constantly dream up complicated motives behind behaviour like that, but how many times do you get a series where the author comes out and confirms your overly analytical theories about his characters?

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!

I must get my League of Frightened Men write-up finished and posted to [community profile] milk_and_orchids so that I will have time to reply to whatever comments it gets before going off to Berlin next week, but since I'm being a bad procrastinator right now, I'm updating here instead.

Procrastination tactics involved baking baklava yesterday afternoon. It's divine!

Also, getting caught up on Alles Was Zählt!

Cut because nobody else watches or cares... )
Things that are awesome:

Nero Wolfe book club is up and running on [community profile] milk_and_orchids! It's making me a bit sad that all my books are on the wrong side of the pond except for League of Freightened Men which is the one I was reading during my flight. I'll be doing a post on it next week. In the meantime I managed to find a few more at the Oxfam bookshop for only £1.50 each.

Climbing! I've been going with my flatmate and her friends every Monday. I am doing really well and absolutely loving it.

New job. I work at a B&B, which isn't great work, but right now a good job is a job that pays me. So, yay for having a good job. Also it's a completely flexible schedule, which leads me to...

Going to Berlin for a week on the 19th! I've never been to Germany and am really looking forward to it.

Free Bicycle! One of the girls from climbing gave me a bike! It is tall, and I am small, but on Friday I rode all the way to Linlithgow without any real difficulties, so I think it will do. Also, it was free which is all I can afford in a bicycle right now.

Linlithgow was really pretty.

Only four or five weeks until I have a niece!

I'm living in holiday exile in the world of dial-up internet. A03 does not appear to be dial-up friendly, so I didn't manage to read the yuletide stories that were written for me until this morning. I received two Nero Wolfe stories - both are well worth the wait. Go, read, enjoy!

The Thief of Baghdad

Little Town Blues

I'm pretty sure I know who the author is for one of those stories...but if I am wrong, being mistaken for [personal profile] parhelion is just about the best Nero Wolfe fanfiction compliment going. *g*

I haven't managed to browse much of anything else that is up in the archive... I did notice a Psmith/Nero Wolfe crossover which I haven't read yet but I am pretty sure I can guess who penned that one. Enquiring minds want to know if I need to read Psmith to follow it.

I haven't yet read any of the stories written for the Man from UNCLE holiday exchange either. I don't expect I'll be doing any amount of fic reading until sometime mid-January when I can finally sit down and read without family members peering over my shoulder and asking what I am doing.

Hope everybody had a good holiday!
Question: What's up with all the individual songs nominated for yuletide? I thought I was pretty in touch with what's going on in fandom, but I've never heard of a song as a fandom. Bandom, yes, but individual songs? Are there communities for individual songs or is this exclusively a yuletide phenomenon?

If someone nominates a song like "Mack the Knife", would the assumption be that they are familiar with Die Dreigroschenoper/Threepenny Opera? Does that mean the TigerLilies are part of that fandom? I'm so intrigued by this.

In other yuletide news:

5 people requested Sapphire and Steel and 14 people offered to write it.
15! people requested Nero Wolfe and 13 people offered to write it.
1 person requested Georgette Heyers's the Foundling and 16 people offered to write it.
1 person requested the Zero Effect and 7 people offered to write it!

4 people offered to write Flashman but nobody requested it. This makes me sad. I was so looking forward to writing the slutty adventures of Elspeth with various historical figures.

ETA: 1 person requested and offered Raumpatrouille Orion and it wasn't me because - in spite of the fact that I nominated it - I somehow screwed up and dropped it when it came to my sign-up.

It turns out Nero Wolfe is still my most favourite fandom ever. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] soupytwist! You realize all my books are halfway across Canada right now? Fortunately, I will be able to get them when I go home for my brother's wedding in May.

In health related news: I finally went to the walk-in clinic and actually made myself wait it out on the chance of finding out whether or not I have cancer-stuffed-with-TB-at-a-party-with-mumps-hosted-by-the-plague (better known as hypochondria). Meh, the Doctor made concerned-face at me and scheduled an MRI...two months from now. I choose to interpret that as Hypochondria: Not a Priority!and not as Canadian Health Care: let's you die while waiting!

To my very great joy, I just discovered that the Guelph Public Library has 61 Nero Wolfe titles - many of which are audio books and are available for free download! This is such a treat for me since my complete collection of paperbacks had to be left in storage at my parents home when I moved.

I wasn't very optimistic about the library having Rex Stout books either since Halifax - which is larger and should have more resources - hasn't any audiobooks and only a few ancient large-print editions available for borrowing. Large print books always leave me feeling as though I am being shouted at.

Anyway, I now have a call on a brand new tradepaperback containing "Fer-De-Lance" and "League of Frightened Men".

Hurrah!
Fannish meme grabbed from [livejournal.com profile] mzcalypso. Yes, I'm procrastinating.

Choose five series (no peeking before you choose them), list them, and then answer the questions behind the cut.

1. Man from U.N.C.L.E.
2. Nero Wolfe
3. Horatio Hornblower
4. Peter Wimsey
5. The Three Investigators

That was fun. Now, back to work!
When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

I don't want to give away my best bits as excerpts so instead I am seizing the opportunity to compose a complete inventory of all the stories I have started and someday intend to finish:

6 Nero Wolfe, 1 Dol Bonner/Sally Colt, 1 Man from U.N.C.L.E, 1 KissKissBangBang, 1 Hornblower )

Man from U.N.C.L.E. x Peter Wimsey

Gosh. Wow. I just love fandom. There's no crazy thing that hasn't been written.

Except nobody has written Peter Wimsey crossed over with "The Wind in the Willows" yet. I'm hoping that will show up sometime around Christmas. *cough* [livejournal.com profile] lasergirl69*cough*

In conclusion: fangirls = strange

Myself included because I spent too much time today speculating about this:

Nero Wolfe = Yellow Shirts
Jupiter Jones = Hawaiian Shirts

Nero Wolfe = bottled beer
Jupiter Jones = too young to drink but I expect when he's grown up he buys canned beer.

Believe me, it goes on from there.

A Meme! Can't remember the last time I did one of those...

1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

So anyway, an update!

My Dol Bonner/Sally Colt story is starting to intimidate me. I started having ideas for it that I really like and now I don't want to work on it because whatever I manage to get on paper will never be as good as what's in my head. Excuse me while I wallow in angst for a moment.

*wallows*

In slightly more amusing news: I've decided that if Nero Wolfe has the Red Leather chair then Dol Bonner must have a Gerrit Rietvelt "De Stijl" wooden chair. Doesn't it look comfortable?
This is the even more obscure bastard offspring of an already rare fandom.

I know it's annoying to read a story in segments, especially when there's a good chance it'll never make it to completion. However, posting it this way forces me to a) write the damn thing in order instead of jumping all over the place and b) not nitpick it to the point where it never gets posted at all. And since there are only two or three people who might possibly want to read this, I expect them all to forgive me if it never crosses the finish line.

Title: Too Many Assistants (1/?)
Author: Jest
Fandom: Nero Wolfe
Pairings: Dol Bonner/Sally Colt, with trace amounts of Wolfe/Archie
Rating: I don't know. There's nothing really explicit in this though I like to think that people will be able to recognize the femmeslash content for what it is. If there is any doubt, it should get cleared up as the story progresses.
Warnings: Unbetaed WIP. Read at your own risk.
Notes: I blame Parhelion for this.

If the recently acquired French Mobier clock in the corner could be depended on... )

Comments? Criticism? Suggestions? Feedback is appreciated.
So, a couple weeks ago my roommate happened to be at a news stand where she saw a magazine with an article in it titled "Inside the World of Fat Sex" which, naturally, she brought home to share with me.

(What did I ever do without [livejournal.com profile] lasergirl69?)

I don't actually have much to say about that article except that it referenced a book called "Fat: the anthropology of an obsession" edited by Don Kulick and Anne Meneley, which I promptly requested from the library. The essays in it are kinda awesome.

Ever wonder what it's like to be a 698 pound rap star? Why do Hawaiians love spam (as in canned ham *shudders*)? Why would a woman want to be fed until she is immobile? FAT PORN! All this and more is explored in this anthology. Highly recommended.

Also there is an article about olive oil and Tuscany that should totally be a Nero Wolfe story. It would be about the Laudemio group which is basically an exclusive club for old and wealthy Italian families who own olive estates in Tuscany. The way I see it, someone is going to sneak one bad olive into the olive mill, thus wounding the pride, violating the honour and endangering the reputation of Laudemio olive oil. Of course they have to hire the world's greatest detective to discover the culprit so Wolfe and Archie have to go to Tuscany, at which point the story would be a giant piss take on Frances Mayes' "Under the Tuscan Sun" until they solve the mystery and have explicit sex. Because, you know, if I'm writing it there would have to be explicit sex. How can any self respecting slasher write a story about olive oil and not include explicit sex?

...I wonder if the Laudemio group has ever had anyone killed?
