Bonus challenge for 5 points: Rec three vids, icon sets, podfics or other fanworks in your journal.
I don't have a link to the very ancient
killabeez Hornblower vid I wanted to rec, so have a SGA vid instead: Welcome Home by
permetaform. Sorry, there's no streaming on that one.
I want a Mad Men vid on this list so I went out and discovered "Let it Be" by Anoel
And for the Sapphire and Steel fans, you can't go wrong with The Ground Beneath Her Feet by bluemeany.
elmey brought this one to my attention via crack_van. Very moody and atmospheric.
And for the Man from UNCLE fans, I can't not mention Malchik Gey by Gnine. It's my favourite vid ever and the one that made me start paying attention to vids in the first place. Perfect choice of song. It really brings home the fact that Illya Kuryakin isn't all that interested in girls. "Handsome, Tender, Soft, why do you look right through me thinking...No." (And don't we all want to hold him like his boyfriend does?)

I love Malchik Gey too; in a way I think of it as as live action MFU anime, but MFU lends itself to that.
I think bluemeany is my favorite vidder, amazing MFU stuff too, and she's done some great Dr. Who vids.

The main criticism I've heard against the show is that it is self-righteous in its critique of the 60s, which is true but doesn't bother me very much. The other (also valid) criticism is that the characters occasionally have wildly unrealistic moments that are mostly in place to serve some plot point. This bugs me more but I am willing to forgive it because the writers deliver moments of understated genius that make me want to weep from how acutely I can identify with the characters, even when it the identification is with characters I don't even like.
I don't think I've seen enough anime to know what live action anime would look like but I'll take your word for it. A few years ago there was quite a lot of MFU fanwork being made by American women who were teaching English in Japan, so the influence doesn't surprise me much.
