As a knight of Ostia, you must always remain calm. It matters not how grave the situation.
— Barthe, to Gwendolyn

Barthe (Japanese: バース Bath) is an Ostian knight. He remained loyal to Lycia during the Disturbance of Bern and did not betray them to follow Bern, unlike some other Ostian knights, such as Legance.

Role

Barthe is a knight in service to Ostia. Along with his fellow soldiers Gwendolyn and Ogier, Barthe remained loyal to Ostia in spite of the big rebellion of the people that wanted Ostia to surrender to Bern. They arrive on the second turn of Chapter 8 within a dead end at the map's upper-left corner. They are behind a cracked wall, so they decide to attack it to break it down and join the fight.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Barthe, as is typical of Knights, has high HP, high defense, and high strength, while all other stats are very low. This combination of statistics limits Barthe's usefulness throughout the game. He is not good at fighting, as he is locked to inaccurate lances and has low skill and luck, resulting in terrible hit rates. Barthe is also not good at taking magical damage because of his low resistance, and he cannot take much damage from axe users, as they will double him and have weapon triangle advantage against him. His low speed prevents him from ever doubling enemies, decreasing his damage output and making it harder to exploit his high strength, and his low movement prevents him from reaching enemies to begin with, assuming the player is not slowing themselves down to accommodate for it.

There are a few options for fixing Barthe's flaws. He joins one level away from promotion to General, and his promotion bonuses are good across the board. If the player is willing to use the coveted Knight Crest on Barthe instead of using it on a better unit, Barthe can gain a statistical advantage and a bonus weapon type for weapon triangle manipulation. Unfortunately, the promotion does not fix his issues in skill, speed, resistance, or movement, but it is the easiest way to give Barthe stats bonuses quickly, and it prevents him from suffering weapon triangle disadvantage against axe users.

Another option is to use all three of Barthe, Gwendolyn, and Bors, as they can perform a Triangle Attack. While using three Knights on the large maps in The Binding Blade limits the player's options, a Triangle Attack is the most reliable way to make use of Barthe's high strength, since it is a guaranteed hit, circumventing his low accuracy. Setting it up and using all three Knights can be a chore, however.

Show the enemy the power of the Ostian knights! Triangle Attack!!
— Barthe, as the lead in a Triangle Attack in The Binding Blade.
Barthe: Legance, you miscreant! Have you no shame for your betrayal of Lord Hector?!
Legance: Barthe... Shut your ugly mouth. Lord Hector was a fool. His death was his own doing. I do not intend to fall along with him.
Barthe: You'll eat those words!

— Barthe, when fighting Legance in Chapter 8 of The Binding Blade.
We cannot afford to make a mistake this time.
— Barthe, in the Final Chapter of The Binding Blade.

Fire Emblem Character File 025: Barthe
Gender: Male Estimated Age: 20s Title: Knight of Justice Origin: Unknown
Status: Ostian Vassal Weapon: Lance, Bow

Aims to be the strongest armor knight through self-training.

A knight who serves Ostia. He cooperated with Wendy and Ogier on a rescue mission to save Lilina during the Ostian insurrection. To others, he has a rigid personality. After the war, he worked to reorganize the Ostian army that was scattered during the insurrection.

Barthe's belief is: "in a one on one fight, the armor knight is the strongest." And so, for the sake of verifying this conviction, Barthe trains himself day after day relentlessly. That conviction influences his subordinates, giving the knights of Ostia great psychological support. On an interesting note, from a support conversation with Astolfo, Barthe shows he is not just a man of brute strength, but also one who can make intelligent inquiries. Also, even though their ways of thinking are different, Bors and Barthe share a knight's oath, and formed bonds that are beyond simply that of comrades.
