Protectrons are a model of robot which appears in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

Background[edit]

The RobCo Protectron was constructed for civil service applications, such as security to firefighting.[2] The robot is described as sturdy, used before the Great War as a "security automaton in both the private and business sectors."[3]

The Protectron has three photo sensors capable of sight and is powered by a fission battery, located behind an access panel.[4][5] Protectrons came with a special pod where it could be stored. The Standard Protectron Control Interface v2.40 was installed on terminals connected to the pod.

The introduction of the Protectron impacted workers in the United States as the automation displaced them from jobs.[6] Labor strikes resulted in violence between the robots and displaced human employees.[7][8]

Variants[edit]

RobCo offered construction variants designed to withstand damage that came equipped with an internal nail gun.[9] Firefighter models were equipped with an internal cryo gun for utilization in combat.[10] Medic models were designed to use its hands as defibrillators, or as a shock weapon in combat.[11] Police units also used shock attacks.[12] Protectrons could be used to cook food with their internal temperatures reaching 1000 degrees.[13]

Other variants included office robots running the R04 V9 "Office Helper" personality[14] with integrated office protocols and scheduling software,[15] RS3 V4.1.6 "Utility Helper"[16] with remote maintenance routine download capability[17] and pest extermination programs,[18] and the RX2 V1.16.4 "Vault Helper"[19] with Vault protocols.[20]

Behind the Scenes[edit]

The Art of Fallout 3 states that during development, Emil Pagliarulo's input on every robot was to "make it more like Robby the Robot." The protectron's original design went through many iterations before artists settled on a design that has "the vintage character of Robby" and that "captures the quintessential 1950's robot character more than any other."[21]
