They're slavers, led by a guy named Caesar. Or Caesar. Not sure how you're supposed to say it. A couple of years ago they tried to take over Hoover Dam, but the NCR beat them back. The NCR didn't - or couldn't - finish the job, though. The Legion's got its strength back and is getting ready for another round at the Dam. My money's still on the NCR winning, but you never know. We've been hearing stories about Legionaries on the Nevada side of the river, so keep a gun handy. You don't want to get caught by them.

Easy Pete is a former prospector living in the town of Goodsprings in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit]

Prior to settling down in Goodsprings, Easy Pete worked as a prospector, gathering working tech, weapons, chems and spare parts by scouring old buildings.[1] He recalls finding a "pretty good claim" near the Colorado River once, but was chased away by Raiders and states that he "got too old" to continue prospecting.[2] After this, he settled down in Goodsprings.[3]

He states that he "takes it easy" and assists with the Brahmin and Bighorners in Goodsprings, earning him the nickname "Easy Pete."[4] Easy Pete is experienced with Dynamite, which he keeps buried for safekeeping, and will not allow others to use it unless they know a "thing or two about explosives."[5][6]

He shares insight regarding the New California Republic, Caesar's Legion and their conflict within the region. He calls Caesar's Legion "slavers" led by Caesar.[7] He mentions that the NCR defeated Caesar's Legion during First Battle of Hoover Dam, but that they "didn't - or couldn't - finish the job."[7] With the Legion regaining its strength and preparing for a second offensive on Hoover Dam, he says his "money's still on the NCR winning."[7]

While he settled down in Goodsprings to get away from the NCR, he thinks they have a "lot of decent folk" but are too forceful with assimilating settlements into the republic "whether [they] like it or not."[8] He credits the NCR for keeping the Legion out of the area and shares the significance of Hoover Dam, which provides power to much of New Vegas and how "anybody who owns the Dam owns the territory."[9]

Notes[edit]

  • He is one of the only non-player characters outside Caesar's Legion, besides Marcus, Follows-Chalk, and Salt-Upon-Wounds that pronounces Caesar with the traditional Latin pronunciation /ˈkaisar/, rather than /ˈsiːzər/.
  • He can be found outside the Prospector Saloon in his chair, or eating a meal inside.
  • He owns the eastern house in town. Any items inside can be taken without receiving bad Karma.

Quotes[edit]

  • "Now I just take it easy and help out with the Brahmins and Bighorners."
  • "The Dam powers a lot of New Vegas. And then there's all that clean water lying in Lake Mead, too. Anybody who owns the Dam owns the territory."

Appearances[edit]

Easy Pete appears in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

Easy Pete is based on the real world Goodsprings resident Gordy Siddons. During Fallout: New Vegas planning phase, the developers visited Goodsprings to gather inspiration.[Ext 1] Siddons, who was working as a miner at the time, took them on a tour of a local mine. This encounter led to the creation of Easy Pete.[Ext 2]

  1. Courier: "You were a prospector - like digging for gold and silver?"
Easy Pete: "Nah, nah - means I poked through old buildings looking for working tech and such. Some folks just call it "salvaging," but never liked the term. Way I see it, salvage means it's broken, near-worthless. Me, I looked for the good stuff - guns, chems, spare parts. Good money in it."

  2. Courier: "Did you ever find anything good while prospecting?"
Easy Pete: "Nope. Had a pretty good claim once, way out east by the river, but got run off by Raiders. Eventually, got too old to keep going out."

  3. Courier: "What's wrong with the NCR?"
Easy Pete: "Don't get me wrong - the NCR's got a lot of decent folk in it. It's just that they make you part of them whether you like it or not. Towns like Goodsprings and Primm don't stay independent for long, not if you've got something the NCR wants. Still, the NCR keeps the Legion away."

  4. Courier: "Why are you called Easy Pete?"
Easy Pete: "Was a prospector until I decided to settle here to get away from the NCR. Now I just take it easy and help out with the Brahmin and Bighorners."

  5. Courier: "How can I get Easy Pete's dynamite?"
Sunny Smiles: "Easy Pete's pretty protective of his dynamite. You'd have to convince him you know a thing or two about explosives before he handed it over."

  6. Courier: "[Explosives 25] I'm familiar with the care and handling of explosives, dynamite included."
Easy Pete: "[SUCCEEDED] Uh huh. Guess you know what you're doing. I'll go dig it up and get it ready. You'll have it by the time the fighting starts."
