Emergency shutdown

edit

FYI I have terminated your bot run with a post on User talk:PrimeBOT as it has absolutely blown up Category:Articles using duplicate arguments in template calls with over 1,500 pages at present. Seems you are missing a check for when |smallimage= is set to an HTML comment... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:42, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

For an example (as I am starting to clean them up) please see Special:Permalink/1347050732... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:02, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh my! You'd didn't have to do all that... I totally would let the bot take a run to clean it up. I suspect now that I'm down at S those will stop happening, but I'll add in a check for that particular phrase just in case and keep an eye on the cat to see if it starts going up again. Primefac (talk) 20:10, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Honestly, it was interfering with my ability to do my work because I need to constantly monitor that cat for new pages that I am possibly dumping in there because this is definitely an issue with JWB/AWB. When it is that full, I can't do that. So just made sense to clean it up myself. That being said...

Category:Pages using infobox person with deprecated parameters (87,944) seems pretty well populated. If/when you have time for a PrimeBOT run that'd be awesome! One thing to watch out for is the usages of |status= on pages such as {{Infobox criminal}} or {{Infobox astronaut}}. That specific param may need to manually fixed? WP:BAG membership

edit

In an effort to help out with some of these bot runs, I'm considering throwing my hat in the ring to join the WP:BAG. I previously tried back in December of 2018 but screwed up the process so it was basically a procedural denial with User:Xaosflux closing as consensus not reached. Do you have any thoughts on my trying again? Worth my time? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:13, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Seems to be a typo in your regex for the current PrimeBOT run... Special:Diff/1345955757/1357491775 |otherpolitical_party= is not a valid parameter... Should just be |other_party=. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:51, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Order of operations fail, with 40 wrappers of infobox person I'm down to the low-tech version of find/replace without all of the other fancy things, so a search for "party" was matching "otherparty". My bad. Primefac (talk) 23:54, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

PrimeBOT question

edit

Heya, quick question for you. When you're doing parameter replacements with PrimeBOT, do you use the AWB parameter replacement tool, or do you use a custom regex? I'm wondering because I'm seeing some incidents in my bot trial run (1, 2, and 3) of AWB replacing a a parameter inside a nested parameter (in example 3 above, {{{location}}} is being replaced with {{{hq_location}}} inside of {{Cite magazine}} in addition to {{Infobox company}}. Do you have any recommendations on how to prevent this moving forward? Thanks! phuzion (talk) 16:32, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just looked around, and you're probably using your own infobox code! I think I'll use that moving forward, since it seems to be quite effective! phuzion (talk) 18:58, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I using AWB's parameter replacement/removal tools (see L2691 and L2713) but I'm calling it directly from a custom module (specifically templateCall = WikiFunctions.Tools.RemoveTemplateParameter(templateCall, param, false)) Hope that helps! Primefac (talk) 20:21, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sinfonia

edit

Hello. I saw the back and forth as a result of my edit to update the section on education to reflect current policies. I apologize for the confusion, it was not intentional, although my lack of a source was as the document you are looking for is not able to be linked.

I see that you do identify as a member of the Fraternity and could not find information on this. There have been several communications in the members-only website regarding this over the past almost two years. The resource in question is available for members only and, although the name and program length is common knowledge, members-only items are not to be shared or otherwise linked, certainly not on public spaces such as Wikipedia. I would encourage you to reach out to brothers to discuss this and perhaps find a solution to the reference issue, as you have more experience on this website. Cyfonia (talk) 23:20, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Huh... found it, though in a menu that I didn't think was actually a menu. If there is no reliable source (which I would argue, there is none) then we need to craft wording that is still true but does not give anything incorrect. I'll think about how best to do this, but simply leaving off the timeframe and the name of the program (which is somewhat irrelevant anyway) would probably work. And for what it's worth, being this vague about something is probably not what was intended; you could have told me the doc was on the MyResources tab without breaking any great taboo. Primefac (talk) 00:00, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad you were able to find it. How I choose to discuss privileged information on a public forum is how I choose to; thank you for your condescending input. Again, I would still recommend contacting a current officer for questions as the document with the timeline and policy laid out is only available to officers (separate from the one in MyResources). I would also argue that the name is important as Etudes is the required, official program of the Fraternity. A lack of specificity by simply putting "member education program" is misleading by omission. Happy to have helped! Cyfonia (talk) 00:19, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wasn't trying to be condescending (tone is very hard to read through text), I was just mildly annoyed at how long it took me to find it (clearly I didn't the first two times) and would have appreciated a pointer since we're all in this together. Primefac (talk) 00:21, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Task 24 Nested templates

edit

Hello, in Special:Diff/1316269060, while removing the obsolete template qi, the bot accidentally replaced the closing braces of a nested template instead of the intended closing braces. I'm not sure how that task was programmed exactly (I've seen regex for other tasks but not this one) but for the future it may be worth it to handle nested templates explicitly even if it makes the regex more complicated. Assuming that the regex has something like .*, you might want to replace it with something like [^{}]*(\{\{[^{}]*\}\}[^{}])* in order to ignore nested templates (yes, I know it looks horrible, regex is called a read-only language for a reason). ~2026-33452-98 (talk) 09:54, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't, and there are always weird exceptions to any code, but thank you for the suggestion and for pointing out the uncorrected error so that it could be fixed. Primefac (talk) 09:59, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bot mishap for Task 30

edit

Hi, I noticed about 2 weeks ago your bot had a mishap on a page I infrequently edit. Your Template:Infobox Person cleanup has expanded outside the bounds of the original template and affected a set of election box templates further down the page, as it altered the parameters of both from "party" to "political_party". Would recommend setting a limit on what the task affects, see Special:Diff/1357491994. UppercutPawnch (talk) 05:17, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

PrimeBOT issue in task 49

edit

Some of the fixes for hard-coded space + space are not the best, e.g. the change made here, where it's the ordinary space that should be removed, not the  . The sequence "single capital + stop + two spaces + word" is likely to be a misformatting of an abbreviated binomial. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:32, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oh, to have this advice a week ago! At the BRFA we discussed possible false positives and the only thing that was determined is that it might not be an ideal solution but it was better than having the double space issue. I didn't even think about your solution, which probably would have caught these edge cases. The task is completed now, though, so unfortunately I won't be able to put this into use. Hi Prime, was wondering if you can look at this non-linked album track song title "U + Me = <3", on You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love by Olivia Rodrigo. Tried creating a redirect to the album, but it shows up plain → "[[U + Me = <3]]". Maybe you can create a song redirect for this, or something, I don't know. Either way, thanks! Best, --Discographer (talk) 21:06, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

< cannot be used (it's a technical restriction). The super-reliable Fandom page for the song gives "the pronunciation" as "You Plus Me Equals a Heart". Not 100% sure we need a redirect but if it's deemed necessary I could possibly see the page called U + Me = 3 (though I'm not sure {{Correct title}} should be placed on redirects). Primefac (talk) 21:41, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll just leave this alone then. Thanks anyway. Best, --Discographer (talk) 21:51, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sandbox AFC reviews

edit

Hi, Primefac. I recently notice few AfC submissions waiting for review in userspace sandboxes rather than in draftspace (e.g. Draft:Peter Iku Dolo), so I moved some of them to draftspace. But i've also seen some reviewers decline submissions while they remain in userspace.

Just wondering should submitted AfC pages generally be moved to draftspace before review? And if so, is it okay for the editor who moved the page to review it as well? Thanks. Khagendra (talk) 21:36, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Generally speaking, yes, we prefer to have drafts in the draft space (this is really more for housekeeping than anything). That being said, it is not a requirement, so there's nothing wrong with leaving a draft in the user space and reviewing it there. There's nothing wrong with moving a page to the draft space and then reviewing it, since both actions are being taken as a reviewer. Primefac (talk) 08:40, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank You so much that clears my doubt . Khagendra (talk) 08:58, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Since I am not sure what might have been deleted, just wanted to make sure we are not confusing Baegunsan (Uiwang and Suwon) with Baegunsan (Gangwon and Gyeonggi) From what I can see via logs and iwikis, I think you fixed it, but the fact that the Korean wiki doesn't seem to have GPS coordinates for the latter is less then ideal, sigh. Talk:Igbo regalia and headdresses

edit

Hello Primefac I'd really appreciate some help with a situation on the Talk:Igbo regalia and headdresses page. I've tried to defuse the situation, but I'm afraid of making it worse. Any advice would be much appreciated. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 08:47, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Any thread in particular in which you are concerned? Primefac (talk) 08:51, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry: if you look at the Talk page, there is an ongoing (very lengthy and somewhat confusing) discussion between the page creator and another editor (both seem new editors), which began on my own Talk page when I was challenged about having okayed the page as part of the AfC process. There seems to be a lot of acrimony, pushing of POV, with some ownership issues. I'm not sure what to do for the best. I thought we had reached a point where both editors agreed yesterday, but that has now all been overwritten. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 11:31, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I see the issue now (I didn't want to get heavily into any one section in case there was something specific) but you're right in that it's the entire talk page. It's rather difficult to tell but I'm pretty sure there's some edit warring going on. I'll have a think about the best way to proceed but based on the interactions of the previous few days I suspect that partial blocks may be needed just to stop the back-and-forth on the article itself until some semblance of consensus can be found (which will likely require multiple outside editors getting in their opinions as well, while managing the HUGE replies from these two editors). Primefac (talk) 14:44, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much. I did think that at one point we had a consensus, but I see now that there are two very different POVs, and possibly related problems across similar articles. In any case, your advice is much appreciated. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 21:36, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bot run...

You got a problem... Category:Articles using duplicate arguments in template calls (0). BLOWING up with duplicates of |education=... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 14:46, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

The hell... I specifically waited until Category:Pages using infobox sportsperson with conflicting parameters was empty... (which it still is?) Primefac (talk) 14:48, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The conflicting check is not looking at blank params... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 14:49, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Of course not... because why ignore blank parameters by default on this module when every other one (deprecated params, uknown params, etc) checks blanks by default. And people wonder why folk like you and me are so keen on template standardisation... It's probably from the |alma_mater= swap. I'll see about dropping any blank |education= params to deal with it. Primefac (talk) 14:57, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It is complicated because using both |height_m= and |height_ft= (for example) with one of them being blank is ok... But yea... This shit is a cluster$%^k to be sure. Appreciate your work!!! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 14:59, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Of course! I have a template I use (User:Zackmann08/cc) that is a fork of {{clc}}. Will turn red if the category is not empty. Helps me keep an eye on these categories. You may find it helpful? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:03, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Interesting idea with the colour changes, for the list on my userpage I just check the numbers themselves. Will probably need to add the duplicate arguments check to my list though given this seems to keep happening. Primefac (talk) 15:21, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It just helps grab my attention. Also got a custom module to check dozens of unknown parameter categories. In any case, this shit happens. Hi - I am not sure how these work, but can you please look at Associate international cricket in 2026 and fi teh America qualifier which is now showing full score details from a section of 2026 Men's T20 World Cup Americas Sub-regional Qualifier A plus reference list and templates etc. I have tried to adjsut the section it is pointing to and this has removed the unwanted content, but now no table displays Bs1jac (talk) 11:36, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorry fixed it. Realised that the section tags added in the original article were mismatched (the start and end tage had different IDs), and I have fixed that. Now displays fine. Bs1jac (talk) 11:42, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, my apologies, I was starting to get a bit cross-eyed towards the end of that all and thought that I had potentially messed something up, but didn't see anything obvious, though it is definitely my fault for not checking the page after I was finished. Thanks for sorting it out! Primefac (talk) 11:46, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
No worries, thanks for doing all of that. Bs1jac (talk) 16:32, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Error

Hi there. Please review this edit. For some reason the change to map_type caused a lua error  Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:42, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Looks like it was a bad map rather than a bad param? Primefac (talk) 16:21, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Module:Params subpages CSD tagged

edit

Most of Category:Candidates for technical speedy deletion is currently doc subpages of Module:Params. I'm unsure if they're safe to delete - in particular, do you know if all the cleanup mentioned at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2026_June_24#Module:Params has been complete? I'm not familiar enough with the TfD process to proceed confidently here. Rusalkii (talk) 21:26, 3 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

It looks like folk are satisfied enough with the conversion process to ignore the remaining user invocations, which is unusual but for something this... weird... I suppose it works. The talk page discussion got shifted to another location so I'd say this is fine to nuke (which I've done now). Thanks for the note. Primefac (talk) 05:22, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

New version of two fixes

edit

Rjwilmsi checked in different versions of those two template fixes; you may want to follow them. He had good reasons.

I see that there are some code changes but I don't really understand the rest of your message. Primefac (talk) 18:12, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Your "Odd behaviour in WikiFunctions" where you were using personal copies of the WikiFunctions code, and I suggested two fixes? Rj checked in slightly different fixes that you may prefer to use. David Brooks (talk) 18:54, 4 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, right, I see what you mean now. Thanks! Primefac (talk) 09:16, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia ACH Trustly Donation Broken

The Wikimedia ACH Trustly Donation page is broken. For a work-around fix, see my talk page LarryLACa (talk) 20:11, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Never heard of this and probably won't ever use it, but... thanks? I suppose I have a fair number of (talk page stalker) that might find this interesting. Primefac (talk) 21:55, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Did it again...

Try adding a check for ^\s*\|\s*birth_name\s*=\s*$\n... Replace with NULL. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:47, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
It has less to do with bad regex and more that the damn module doesn't do the same thing as the others. Gonna see if I can get that sorted out. Primefac (talk) 08:52, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
FWIW maybe AWB can get a dup args checker? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:17, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just wanted to say I really do appreciate working with you... I know we disagree on the whole "fixing of blank deprecated parameters" but I genuinely appreciate working with you and all the hard work you do. Just wanted to say that. The feeling is mutual. Primefac (talk) 08:47, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

MOS:DONTHIDE

edit

Where does MOS:DONTHIDE say it applies only for articles? The first note of the MoS says Though provisions related to accessibility apply across the entire project, not just to articles, which links to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility and in there MOS:PRECOLLAPSE says the same. Gonnym (talk) 12:55, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not ignoring, been busy, will respond hopefully tomorrow? Primefac (talk) 08:47, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Recognising the exemption stated, the list collapse is done using an approved collapse template and does not violate any of the ACCESS guidelines as far as I am aware. Personally I see this just as much of an access (lowercase) issue as it is an ACCESS issue, in that having the template with all parameters shown essentially three times on the page uncollapsed makes those sections gigantic, and therefore makes it a lot more onerous to get to the useful information if one isn't directly going to a section via the TOC.
I guess my point is that the primary purpose of ACCESS is for articles, and if we use care there should be no issues with making adjustments that might be on the borderline of it if there are valid reasons and it is done in a thought-out manner. Happy to discuss further with you though. Primefac (talk) 09:27, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Editor Level

edit

How can I confirm my Editor level? ~2026-38628-56 (talk) 15:37, 7 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Temporary accounts do not have "levels", but if/when you create an account your user groups (or anyone else's) can be checked at Special:UserRights. Primefac (talk) 08:49, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

AfC and changes since I've been gone.

edit

Hey Prime, been a minute since I've done AfC. I'm re-reviewing notability/policy guidelines as I go to get caught up with any changes. The one big change since I was last reviewing is the rise of LLMs. Is there as set SOP/tool for how editors should review for LLM written articles? Or is it more of a sniff test and utilize third-party utilities type of thing?

Also, any other major changes you can think of that I might miss in terms of AfC stuff, please feel free to let me know. Sulfurboy (talk) 21:04, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is RfA/readyToStart still used?

edit

Hi Primefac! Hope you are doing well. I was looking to update {{RfA/readyToSubmit}} and came across the similarly-named {{RfA/readyToStart}}. Any thoughts on its deletion under WP:T5? It has no transclusions and I wasn't able to find any uses via insource. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 01:32, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The latter got hard-coded into the former, I believe around the time people wanted the RfAs to auto-close. Thanks for the reminder, it seems I forgot to do so back then. Primefac (talk) 08:48, 13 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Tributaries

edit

regarding Ton (river), Širvinta (Šešupė), unless I do not understand the word tributary correctly, I hink you added wrong categories: Širvinta (Šešupė) is tributary of Šešupė, not Neman. It does belong to Neman river basin. Please explain. --Altenmann >talk 13:36, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's possible, I'm adding the categories based on the transcluded template, so if it's the wrong template and/or the template is using the wrong category, it'll do that. I'll see about cleaning those up in a minute. Primefac (talk) 13:37, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Help

edit

When editing Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Hall of Fame to add the latest Awardee, the "skip to the bottom" is at the bottom not at the top where it should be. I have to manually scroll down from 2013 all the way to 2026. I appreciate the banners on the way down but it takes a few minutes. As usual, Thanks for your help! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 13:50, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'll play around with the banners, might have to split some of the 2010s into its own page (we might be reaching the end of the transclusion limit for the page). Primefac (talk) 13:57, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
