Terrain
Terrain (mainly referred to as Field Power or Field Power Source in the anime and manga) is a mechanic in which gameplay on certain zones of the field is affected by the type of area they cover, usually by granting a Field Power Bonus of 30% increase in ATK/DEF to certain Types depending on the landscape.

Duelist KingdomEdit
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime, this concept was used during the Duelist Kingdom tournament.
Different Field Types would grant certain types of monsters a Field Power Bonus—for example, the Ocean Field would benefit WATER monsters, and the Forest Field would benefit Insect-Type monsters. This bonus would generally result in a 30% increase to a monster's original ATK and DEF.
In the anime, a monster benefiting from a Field Power Bonus would also gain battle resistance to magic. If it battled an opponent's monster that had been powered up by a Spell Card, the opponent's monster would lose that power-up and would have to battle using its innate abilities. In the manga, this rule worked differently: a monster with a Field Power Bonus would instead be able to immediately launch an attack on an opponent's newly summoned monster, depriving the opponent of the chance to power it up with a Spell Card beforehand.
Certain Field Types would also have special abilities that affected the field itself. For example, the Ocean Field would hide underwater monsters from the opponent's view. If "Full Moon" were attacked and destroyed, the ocean's tide would rise, shrinking the amount of available land on the field.
Certain monsters, such as "Great Moth" and "Harpie Lady", which had the ability to fly, would also gain a resistance to magic when battling a landbound monster—one strong enough to even strip the opponent's battling land monster of its Field Power Bonus.
OCG/TCGEdit
In the OCG/TCG, this concept was loosely adapted as Type Booster Field Spell Cards.
Video gamesEdit
Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden MemoriesEdit
In Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories, Field Spell Cards create terrains that increase or decrease a monster's ATK and DEF by 500. Depending on the location of the Duel, a terrain may already be in place by default.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the RosesEdit
In Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses, Duels are played on a grid, with each tile having its own type of terrain. It offers a Terrain Effect to certain Types of Monsters, which either increases their ATK/DEF and allows them to move up to 2 spaces, or decreases their ATK/DEF. There are also three unique terrains (Normal, Labyrinth, and Crush) which do not normally have Field Spell equivalents.
List of terrainsEdit
Manga and animeEdit
| Terrain | Effect | Image | TCG Field Spell Card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yami/Dark | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Yami". In the anime, it also powers up DARK monsters.
It would also make the player's monsters invisible to the opponent. |
"Yami" | |
| Mountain | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Mountain". | "Mountain" | |
| Sogen/Grassland | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Sogen". | "Sogen" | |
| Forest | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Forest".
The Forest Field zones can be burned away by a card like "Burning Land". |
"Forest" | |
| Wasteland | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Wasteland". | "Wasteland" | |
| Umi/Ocean | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Umi". Cannot be inhabited by non-water-based monsters.
The player's water-dwelling monsters would also be able to hide underwater, with the opponent being unable to see their data nor attack them properly. However, this would make them more susceptible to electricity-based attacks—as that kind of attack would be able to target the entire Ocean Field directly. The monster "Jellyfish" has the ability to nullify any electricity and thus protect the Ocean Field from this drawback. Certain monsters have the ability to alter the percentage of the field covered by ocean: "Kairyu-Shin's" attack would cause a tidal wave that could increase the area of coverage (up to 95% if "Full Moon" were also in play, due to the high tide caused by its gravity), and "Giant Soldier of Stone" would be able to traverse into the ocean, thereby increasing the coverage of any Wasteland zones on the field. However, if the player on the Ocean Field has at least three water-dwelling monsters and a wide coverage of ocean, they would be able to encircle such a monster and prevent it from further expanding the land zones. This action would require them to move into zones closer to the remaining land zone(s), however. If "Full Moon" were removed from the field, however, the water from the high tide would end up receding, thereby causing any water-dwelling monsters caught up in the land zones to capsize and become unable to move. |
"Umi" | |
| Graveyard | Boosts the ATK and DEF of Zombie monsters by 30%.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, the terrain is loosely adapted as the Field Spell Card "Call of the Forgotten". |
"Call of the Forgotten" | |
| Labyrinth | Created by playing "Labyrinth Wall". With this in play, cards are played on a grid with paths dictated by walls. Monsters can move a number of squares up to their Level once per turn, except monsters with the flying ability, which must remain immobile.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, "Labyrinth Wall" is a Normal Monster and the terrain is loosely adapted as the Field Spell Card "Labyrinth Wall Shadow". |

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the RosesEdit
| Terrain | Effect | Image |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | The default terrain. | |
| Night/Dark | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Yami". | |
| Mountain | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Mountain". | |
| Meadow/Sogen | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Sogen". | |
| Forest | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Forest". | |
| Wasteland | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Wasteland". | |
| Ocean/Sea | Powers up and weakens the same monsters as "Umi". | |
| Labyrinth | Gameplay is already grid-based in this title; Labyrinth squares cannot be entered by most monsters. | |
| Toon | Powers up Comic monsters and weakens all other monsters. | |
| Crush | Strengthens all Immortal monsters. Any other monsters with 1500 or more ATK on this terrain are destroyed. |
Cards which affect terrainsEdit
Field Spell Cards can change the terrain in video games that use this mechanic. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime, Field Spells had not been introduced at this point.
Manga and animeEdit
- The fireball attack from "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1" could light up the Night field for a second, making the opponent's DARK monsters visible.
- "Swords of Revealing Light" could completely light up the Night terrain, revealing the opponent's monsters.
- "Burning Land" could be used in conjunction with "Curse of Dragon" to burn away certain terrains.
- "Full Moon"/"Mystical Moon" could raise tide levels, causing the Ocean terrain to spread to more Zones. Destroying "Full Moon"/"Mystical Moon" would cause them to drastically drop.
- "Shadow Ghoul" could be fused with the Labyrinth terrain to create "Wall Shadow". "Wall Shadow" could move through the walls and more spaces than its Level. The Labyrinth would remain intact when "Wall Shadow" was destroyed.
- "Magical Labyrinth" could be used to rearrange the walls of the labyrinth.
- "Dungeon Worm" could tunnel under the labyrinth.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the RosesEdit
- "Labyrinth Tank" and "Dungeon Worm" can move on Labyrinth squares. "Shadow Ghoul" can also move on Labyrinth squares, and will transform into "Wall Shadow" when it does.
- "Barrel Rock" and "Dharma Cannon" can enter Labyrinth spaces and will turn that space into normal terrain when they do.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel StoriesEdit
- "Giant Soldier of Stone" can destroy any Field.
In the Toei animeEdit
The Toei anime uses a field with areas similar to the ones in Duelist Kingdom.
