Hi, Jennifer! Welcome to WikiTree. It can feel a little overwhelming at first. I have three suggestions for you. One is to go to your own profile, and you will see that a greeter has left a couple of messages on your profile page and invited you to reply to those comments if you have questions about getting started. They can point you in the right direction to find answers to your questions (which we all had when we started!) Second, they gave a link to the Honor Code. It's important to first familiarize yourself with that and agree to it. Before you sign the honor code, you are limited in what you can do on WikiTree and can't fully participate. A good place to begin learning the basics is here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:How_to_Use_WikiTree . Third, after reviewing that and agreeing to the honor code, there is a new member how-to list here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To

I hope this helps! You have placed this comment on a Project page, not the profile of your ancestor, Caspar. If you begin where I suggested, you will see what you need to do to begin collaborating on our shared tree and I bet that then, you'll know the basics about how to connect yourself to your ancestors that are already here and create profiles for those that are not.

I have been researching an ancestor for years. His name is Anthony Hite. He was born and married and had children in Frederick Co VA around the same time that Joist Hite was moving and shaking in Frederick Co. Joists protected profile is Heyd-15. I cannot find information connecting this family, except the location and Anthony’s presence at a wedding in the area where Joist was settling. Is anyone interested in helping me solve this puzzle? On some sites I see Anthony confuses with Alexander or Abraham Hite. But, I’m not sure that is legit.

There are a number of different families who arrived that century using various spellings. There are two seemingly different families who arrived in the first wave to New York in 1710:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Heydt-3 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Heite-11

Heite-11 apparently settled in Virginia as did https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Heyde-9 who arrived later through Philadelphia.

There was also https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Heidt-124 who came to Georgia from Europe prior to the Revolution.

I'm looking at a current Palatine digest I got in my email today. It refers to someone who is apparently named Cushwa Gouschois I. I couldn't tell which was supposed to be forename and which was surname, and neither pairing worked. I would like to find out the ID number for his profile so I can look at it and get some context for his name, but I've tried putting variations of it in FIND, and nothing comes up except over 500 profiles for "Cushwa" as a surname, but few or none of them are actually Cushwa. I also tried searching for prenomen Issac, surname Cushwa, and it brought up only one match which was Esaias Gushwa. I speak both French and German, so I'm hoping if I can see the profile, I might make some sense out of it, or get an idea for searching. Also, I couldn't figure out how to reply to an email in the digest, because the "click here to reply" doesn't work.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Please correct the death date for Johann Nicholaus Schneider, (Schneider-2396) whose correct death date appears in the biography. He was killed along with his wife and some of their children in an Indian raid. If the death date for this person is correct, please remove him as husband of Anna Margaretha Wotring.

I corrected the death information on the profile. But he died with his second wife and their children, so she should not be removed.

I've been working on this dilemma. Johann Nicholas (this profile) is not the Johannes/Hans/John Schneider who was killed in 1763. The problem is due to the use of Johannes Nicholas and the assumption that Johannes is his call name. The two profiles, Johannes and Johann Nicholas are conflated on FamilySearch. Johann Nicholas was born in 1703 and died in 1789. Johannes was born in 1718 and died with Magdalena Wotring (Vautrin and three of their children on 8 October 1863. There was no profile for Johannes b. 1718.

I created a profile for Johannes b. 1718 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Schneider-17304 which is correct man, but didn't have time to add a comment. (It took a while to research the problem) The sources and bio material currently on Johann Nicholas should move to Schneider-17304 along with the wife, Anna Margaretha Wotring. I will source Johann Nicholas and move the current bio text to Research Notes.

I agree with Kie (Entrikin) Zelms that Johann Nicholas Schneider is not the Johannes "Hans" Schneider killed in 1763. Schneider-17304. I was not aware of Ms. Zelms insight, that Johann Nicholas Schneider, born 1703 and died in 1789, had not married Wotring-43. I should not have asked to have his death date changed, as he was a different person. I apologize for my error. It is showing correctly on my tree now.
I'll just change the death date back to 1789... It was a very interesting research project!

This question is regarding Zartman-6, Maria Catherine Zartman, who is listed as the wife of Schreckengast-31, Johann Heinrich Schreckengast (my ancestors). What is the source for giving her surname as Zartman? I have worked extensively with both the Schreckengost (by any spelling) and Zartmans, and I have never seen a surname for Henry Schr's wife. Henry's brother Conrad did marry Susanna Zartman, daughter of Hans Jacob Zartman, and Henry's son John married Anna Maria Greninger, daughter of Henry Greninger and Anna Maria Zartman (sister of Susanna who married Conrad Schr.). _The New Zartman Family Book_ doesn't list any Maria Catherine Zartman in its index.

Alexander Zartman immigrated to Penna. in 1728 (ship Albany) with not quite 6-year-old Hans, and not-quite 1-year-old Johann Bernhard. His son Alexander was born 3 years later, in 1731. Born in 1753 according to her profile, Maria Catherine Zartman would have been a granddaughter of Alexander. The book doesn't show any children for Johann Bernhard; the list of children of Hans Jacob doesn't include a Catherine, and the list of children of Alexander lists a Catherine born in 1761. As for Maria Catherine's place of birth, I can't find that there's a town in Germany called Wittenstein. It's a surname and thence the name of a tool manufacturing company. Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis is made up of nine towns, one of which is called Witten, so maybe that's what's meant. It would seem that with such a specific location and date, a researcher would have been able to find a baptismal record and the names of parents. But with no source at all, it's impossible to verify her existence. Henry Schr.'s first known child was born in 1776, so he probably married in 1775. 11 years after his assumed arrival in Penna. with his father, so his wife was in Penna. before that 1775. With a surname that so far can't be verified, I suggest that we remove the surname from Maria Catherine, and change her surname to Unknown.

Good question. I agree that we don't have any documentation of Maria Catherine's last name. Her supposed father Jacob Zartman didn't name a daughter Catherine or similar with his other children in his will. There seems to be confusion surrounding the Zartman children and their spouses. I just made some edits relating to Jacob's daughter Susanna (who appears in a variety of places as Catherine Susanna). I think there are two profiles for her and also for her father Jacob that will need to be merged. But that leaves another mystery, which is who is Catharine Zartman Zentmeyer who has a grave in Keller Cemetery (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/43768751/catharina-susanna-zentmeyer) with her LNAB, and was the wife of Johann Jacob Zentmeyer (1751-1831)? Can anyone help untangle these families?

Two months ago I suggested that Weidemann-22 and Wideman-275 should be merged, as they represent the same person. Both list as having arrived on the ship Sandwich (Weidemann-22 incorrectly lists as 1761, but source cited on Wideman-275 it was 1750. Both are listed as married to Obendorf-1. As Palatine Migration WikiTree is a profile manager for both, can they assist in merging these two profiles? As for the surname, I know of no records spelling the name as Weidemann as the one profile. As listed on Wideman-275, there are three known documents containing his original signature.

His immigration in 1750 as Johann Henrich Wäÿdmann, 1761 as Johann Henrich Weidmann, and his will as Henrich Weidmann. The spelling in most contemporary American records and used by descendants is Wideman.

posted by Rick Saunders

As the earliest known original signature, his LNAB should be Wäÿdmann. The later spellings can be added to the Other Last names field. We use the earliest known spelling of the LNAB, regardless of spelling used by descendants. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Name_Fields#When_conventions_changed_during_a_person.27s_lifetime

I can complete the merge, but need to correct the LNAB first.

I'm not sure my 5th GGfather, George Kriebel (Kriebel-41) qualifies for the Palatine Migration. George was from Silesia, not Germany ... not anywhere near the Palatine area. Plus, George emigrated through England, only briefly staying in Germany. Does this project include all German-speaking people?

posted by Rod Schultz

Yes, the Project:Palatine Migration project includes all German-speaking immigrants who arrived at the invitation of the British Crown before 1776. According to this individual's profile, he was a passenger on one of the transports that brought the "Palatines" to Philadelphia where they swore their oath of allegiance to the British monarch.
Yes, Rod, the Palatine Project covers all German-speaking immigrants who arrived in the period from 1709 up until the American Revolution (1776). It includes Switzerland, Austria, Alsace (now France), what is now Germany (post 1806) Silesia was part of the Holy Roman Empire (Heiliges Römisches Reich). The Schwenkfelders very much qualify for inclusion. Up until the time of the American Revolutionary War, German speakers emigrating to America were universally labeled "Palatines." Hi Kie and Dave,

My curiosity got the better of me and I did research on the Jacob Stuber that came in 1709. I found his wife's nephew on wikitree, Johann Peter Mann (1711 - 1790), and then added his father Johan Henrich Mann (1681) , (b Germany, died New York), then added his father Hans Peter Mann (1643 - 1687), (b, d Germany) then added his daughter Anna Catharina (Mann) Stuber (1672), , (b Germany, died New York) then added her husband Hans Jacob Stuber, (b Germany, died New York)

As I was looking to see if any of his children were on wikitree I found Maria Catherina Stuber mixed in with Anna Catharina (Salbach) Rau (1695 - 1748) , and the husbands mixed together in Johannes Rau (1699 - 1768)

I have separated them and created new profiles for Anna Maria Catharina Stuber (1697), and Johann Jurgen Rau (abt. 1690) both born Germany died New York.

(I think it's called falling down a wikitree rabbit hole, but the cat has survived. ) The connections are all sourced and I will give all the profiles another look for additional info.

Hi Palatine Migration project, I have encountered some confusing parts of the tree I am hoping the community here can help sort out.

Michael Carman (1708) father of Michael Carman (1747) seems to have unclear marriages, and Michael Carman (1747) seems to have undetermined mother.

UEL records here: https://uelac.ca/loyalist-directory/detail/?wpda_search_column_id=1281 claim Michael Carman (1708) was married to a Magdalena Walter (1709-1801)

Michael Carman (1747, son of Michael Carman 1708) does not have a mother listed on UEL records: https://uelac.ca/loyalist-directory/detail/?wpda_search_column_id=1279

On one wikitree profile: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Zier-3 Magdalena Zier Carman (1712 - 1789) is listed as wife of Michael Carman (1708) and mother of Michael Carman (1747)

On another, Magdalena Walter (1709 - 1733) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Walter-1706 is listed as mother of Maria Carman (b. abt 1733) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kirman-5, who is listed as a daughter of Michael Carman (1708), and sister of Michael Carman (1747)

To me, to seems we do know that Michael Carman (1708) was married to a woman named Magdalena, but I cannot find definitive evidence linking Magdalena (Walter or Zier) to Michael Carman (1708)

I do find it interesting that the daughter Maria Carman (b. abt 1733) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kirman-5, who is listed as a daughter of Michael Carman (1708), and sister of Michael Carman (1747) married a man with the surname Walter. Perhaps somehow got conflated with mother's name, or potential cousin?

Most ancestry trees claim Magdalena Zier, some Walter, but records are in German, and I can't verify if they are accurate.

to sum it up, was Kirman-2 married to Zier-3 or Walter-1706, or both, or neither? And what are the correct dates of birth/death/marriage?

Hi, I am new to the Palatine Migration Project and to Wikitree in general. Do I understand correctly that I can't edit anyone born before 1700? Who do I ask to make edits? My question is about Coon-1269, Hanness Coon. Given that there are so many people named Coon/Kuhn/Coen/Kuehn and many other spellings, and so many men named Hanness/Hans/Johannes/John, I wonder if there is a discussion where members are trying to untangle them.

Hans ffellacoons was definitely on Gov. Hunter's list of orphans, definitely apprenticed to Caleb Heathcote of Scarsdale, NY, and definitely born in 1695. I can trace him and his family on their journey to New York, but not for him after he became apprenticed. Some people think he became Johann Veltin Kuhn. Others think he became Hanness Coon.

Is anybody working on the Coon/Kuhn family and how can we help each other?

Thanks!

These are not Project Protected profiles. You are welcome to add sourced information to either profile. Wow, harsh, James. I have no doubt that a great many Palatine profile pages are incomplete to some degree. I remember when I joined WT and found my surname immigrant ancestor's profile page. It already existed and had for years, but was largely incomplete and or incorrect. Why? I don't know. I imagine a lot of people discover WT, join, start to work on it (create profiles, upload GEDCOMs, etc) and then gradually fade away for whatever reason. That's the nature of a system that is free for all to use. Then someone like me comes along, discovers an ancestor's profile and spends a lot of time filling in all the data, biography, sources, research notes, etc. Despite all the time and effort I've put into him, Johann Martin is still "incomplete" in my estimation because I just can't find sources for some things and probably never will. Nevertheless, I'm pretty proud of how fleshed out his profile is. That said, his wives profiles are almost empty, not because I'm lazy or unwilling, I just can't find sources for them! And THAT said, I've created profiles that are largely empty, such as siblings of ancestors, in order to make my ancestor's profiles more complete, but that I just haven't had the time yet to flesh out. I tell myself I'll get to them, but honestly, there are some I probably never will get to... there just aren't enough genealogy hours in a day. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the beast. Furthermore, it isn't the responsibility of the Palatine Migration Project administrators to check and flesh out profiles, that responsibility is ours and I'm doing my poor best to do my part, are you? How is your post at all constructive or productive?

"Judgmental" is a negative word to describe someone who often rushes to judgment without reason. You are talking about people who have volunteered their time and effort to create these profiles and then those who come back in to update them. This is by and large a community of like-minded genealogists who want to provide sourcing to the greatest extent they can. For you to assume they are 'lackadaisical and 'unwilling' (and by your statement, providing false and/or fake information) is not only harsh but a completely unwarranted judgment on people you know nothing about.

Rather than criticizing it would appear many of us prefer to use our time productively to provide accurate sourcing, biographical information and additional references where needed. This is not the easy task one might imagine, especially when some large families (such as mine) have the same names repeated through multiple generations and among contemporary descendants of various offspring. So we do the best we can. This is a volunteer community. Judgementalism rarely if ever facilitates success.

As far as I know, these Kleins are not part of my line. I am seeking someone with Y-DNA from that line to verify, but no luck so far. I am working on this line because both have sons Adam and Jacob: My Adam was married to an Anna Maria unknown, and Johann Jacob, married to a Anna Eva (Dusong). The children of both families were born around the same time, have similar names and dates in the Truby-Graff book. The baptism records that I found and have been using for my Klein brothers may have been mistaken for or muddled with Philipp Wendel's sons. I feel certain I have the correct children identified in my line, and will make the small corrections where necessary. Given that Philipp Wendel was a founding member of the Ziegel Lutheran Church where many of these baptisms took place, I am not sure if I should delete those records from my profiles or not. Is it possible the Truby-Graf book is incorrect? Looking for some advice, because I am really flummoxed by this.

To the best of my knowledge, and as a result of much research, I have found no source to show Adam Klein-6361 was married more than once, and I do think both wives listed are intended to represent the same person. There are two sources that confirm the mother of two of Adams children is named Anna Maria, so there is no dispute with that, but no last name is given. I do think it is perfectly reasonable to note on both Klein-6361 and Unknown-505006, that Ertz has been suggested as the possible last name for Adam's wife, but in the absence of a source Adam Klein was specifically married to Anna Maria Ertz, Ertz-61, should not be attached to Adam Klein. I may have been overly zealous in adding Palatine migrant tags and so I also suggest we remove that tag from Unknown-505006. Thanks for hearing me out.

The appropriate way to do this would be to merge the two wives, ensuring the merge is completed into Unknown-505006.

I will set this up.

As long as Unknown-505006 shows birth in Germany the Palatine Migration template should remain on her profile.

There is little on the background of Unknown-505006. I personally do not know where she was born, but it was assumed she was born in Germany. The Unknown profile is marked as uncertain. I do wish I could find something definitive. Plan to keep digging.
I would like to propose a merge of Lukenbell-1 and Luckenbill-32. There are numerous variations on the name "Luckenbill" and several of them seem to be the same person. These two both seem to be Johan Ekel Luckenbill who arrived aboard the Thistle in Philadelphia, 1730. Little is known directly about the man. A Heinrich Luckenbill was also aboard (Heinrich signed his own name, Johann used an "X"). They are believed to be brothers (Morton's history) and Johan is believed to have been accompanied by a wife and one daughter, Anna Barbara (b1721) who married a Johannes Kistler. Less is even known about Heinrich, although he too would be a Palantine Immigrant. Both also signed the allegiance pledges. They eventually settled in Berks County, Pa, and multiple "Luckenbills" emerged. The earliest are a John Adam Luckenbill (b 1720) who would have been on the Thistle, but too young to be named. A John Ludwig (born around 1735 in Berks moved to NC and bought land in 1758. He's recorded in a family history of the Farleys, by Lucy Farley Speer. Jost Luckenbill married to Susanna is the father of my descendant Christian Benjamin Luckenbill (b 1774) and part of the Morton history which is really confusing to work through with the numerous Christians getting blended and mixed up. Anna Barbara, John Ludwig, Adam, and Jost are most likely children or grandchildren of Johann Ekel (or perhaps Heinrich). Another Christian (b 1741) is reported as a son of Johan Ekel by Family Search and a son of Adam by the Strausstown Roots group. There is obviously much to clean up and I would appreciate and help and guidance you all could provide. One immediate question is how to fix what I think are errors - before or after the merges? I have adopted several unclaimed "Luckenbills" (I feel some loyalty to the name having used it for a number of years), but not all are direct descendants. I have completed the Ancestry DNA , but am not sure how to use it to possible get some connections or clarity about the Luckenbill descendants. Thanks for any help.

We should include all four listed children of Lannin-19 and Schnell-268 in the migration. They came together on same ship as parents. Thanks. JSC

Greetings Dave and Ellen,
  • I recently proposed 4 merges related to Hans Michael Gutknecht.
  • Since Hans Michael Gutknecht (Gutknecht-90) is a Palatine Migration Project profile, I thought I should contact you first to get your opinion and 'blessing'. I first attempted to merge Isaac Goodnight (Goodnight-530) with Isaac Goodnight (Goodnight-6), but was reminded to first merge his parents.
  • These are the proposed merges (in order that they should be merged, I believe):
  • 1. Christopher Landers (Landers-1293) into Christopher Landis (Landis-12)
  • 2. Mary Landers (Landers-1290) into Mary Landis (Landis-57) (Landis being the correct spelling, I believe)
  • 3. Hans Michael Gutknecht (Gutknecht-87) into Hans Michael Gutknecht (Gutknecht-90)
  • 4. Isaac Goodnight (Goodnight-530) into Isaac Goodnight (Goodnight-6)
  • Christopher Landis/Landers was the father of Mary Landis/Landers.
  • Mary Landis/Landers was second wife of Hans Michael Gutknecht.
  • Isaac Goodnight was the youngest son of Hans Michael Gutknecht.
  • Approval has been made for (Gutknecht-87): John Sissom (Sissom-18), and (Gutknecht-90): Bill Vincent (Vincent-18).
  • Approval has been made for (Goodnight-6): Doug Cooper (Cooper-11817), and (Goodnight-530): default
  • Awaiting approval from Dave McDougle (McDougle-1) for (Landis-12) and (Landis-57).
  • Dave McDougle is also on the trusted list of Hans Michael Gutknecht.
  • Hans Michael Gutknecht was my 4th Great Grandfather (confidence = high).
  • Once these merges have been completed, there will be other merges concerning Isaac Goodnight's wives.

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance and advice. Respectfully, Luther Brown

Looking over the bio for Johann Peter Heydrich Sr (1710-1789), I noticed that most, if not all, of the details in it described the life of his son by the same name, Johann Peter (Heydrich) Hedrick Jr. (1732-1798), rather than the life of the father. I don't know if I accidentally submitted this bio, or someone else. If no one has any objections, I would like to remove this bio, and blend it in with the bio of Johann Peter (Heydrich) Hedrick Jr. (1732-1798), while replacing the bio of Johann Peter Heydrich Sr (1710-1789) with one that more accurately describes his life.

Hi Kent,

Not all profile managers on these profiles are project members, so they won't see this note. In cases like this, it is probably better to post the message directly to the profile(s) concerned.

But thank you for offering to straighten out the biographies here. I can't see where there should be any objection to that.

Hi! I'm on Ranger duty and noticed a change to LNAB on a profile managed & protected by the Palatine Migration Project but don't see support for one spelling over another. Could you take a look? Rahmsauer-1 (which is about the only variation not given in one of the comments).
