Biography
Henry Spring was born in 1628 in England, the son of Elinor Spring and John Spring.[1][2][3][4]
Henry, at the age of 6, and his family, migrated to Massachusetts on the ship Elizabeth in April 1634. William Andrews was ship master.[5][1][3][6]
The family settled at Watertown.[1]
On 25 March 1656, John Spring Sr., Henry's father, gave his dwelling house and adjacent land, all his lands in Watertown, his tools of animal husbandry, household items and utensils to Henry, reserving, during his natural life, the right to the north end of the dwelling house, half the fruit orchard, the kiln and kiln house and part of the hop ground, household stuff and utensils of husbandry. Henry was to pay him L4 annually. After his death, Henry was then to pay his brother John Jr. L30.[7][1]
Henry married, firstly, Mehitable Bartlett on January 7, 1658 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [8] [1] [2][9] Mehitable was born at Watertown on July 4, 1640, daughter of Thomas and Hannah (___) Bartlett. [10] Their children were:
- Elizabeth Spring born on October 13, 1659; married John Gale on September 27, 1677. (1659–?)[8][11]
- Henry Spring born at Watertown on March 1, 1662/3. (1662–?)[8][12]
- Anna Spring born on September 21, 1671; married Jonathan Parke on March 18, 1690. (1671–?)[8][13]
- Thomas Spring born before 1674; died at Watertown June 28, 1710; married Elizabeth Train on November 20, 1701.[8][14][15]
- Mehitable Spring born before 1675.[14]
- Abigail/Abiah Spring born on January 6, 1676/7. (1676–?) [8][16]
Henry married Susanna (Stowers) Cooke on September 15, 1691.[8][17] as her forth husband. His wife Susanna Stowers' origins are unknown but she had previously married first, George Wheeler, second Edward Goodwin and third, Gregory Cooke.[1]
Henry died sometime between 29 June 1695 when he wrote his will and 25 November 1697 when his estate was inventoried.[14]
In his will, Henry named:[14]
- wife Susanna
- son Henry, sole executor
- son Thomas when he reaches age 21
- daughter Elizabeth Mellings
- daughter Mehitable when she reaches age 22
- daughter Abigail[14]
His estate was inventoried on November 25, 1697 and valued at L 317 7s. It included household goods and furnishings, husbandry utensils such as plows and chains, and livestock - 3 cows and a calf, and old mare and her colt, 3 swine and sheep. The land holdings, assessed at L 272, included the mansion house, barn and orchard with about 30 acres of land, two dividend lots containing 25 acres and 35 acres, a farm of 59 acres and 3 1/2 acres meadow.[14]
