Biography
My name is Clare Spring, I was born in 1987 at the Royal Canberra Hospital in Canberra, Australia. My mother was born in Auckland, New Zealand and my father was born in Melbourne.
- I love listening to all different types of music, but especially live music.
- I like the idea of an 'endless summer' (without bushfires!).
- My partner Josh and I have been together since 2005. We both like to travel.
- I love drinking all different types of tea, and really appreciate tea houses. Ditto alcohol/cocktail bars; food/restaurants; beer/pubs; movies/cinemas.
- I have a balcony garden including parsley and succulents. Perhaps my most prized plant is a yellow crown of thorns.
- Before I came to Wikitree, I used to edit Wikipedia.
Genealogy and ancestral origins
I started researching my family history in February 2017. Wikitree has been an extraordinarily helpful platform to do this and to contain my research (including well beyond my close family!). I love old photos, stories and history. I feel lucky to live in Australia, and I acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners of this Country.
Paternal ancestry
- Before Australia, my Spring ancestors were most recently from County Tipperary, Ireland (in the country's southern region). In particular, my 3rd great grandmother Sarah (Gavan) Spring was in Borrisokane when she died in 1882. It seems likely that my Springs in Ireland were descendants of Thomas Spring (1545?–1597), but I've struggled and been unable to find records that relate to Sarah's ancestry, or her husband William Spring's [brick walls].
- Actually, all of my paternal grandfather's migrating ancestors to Australia were from Ireland and they probably all came within a five-year period:
- 1857 (Sheppard-O'Callaghan)
- 1858 (Branagan)
- 1859 (Rennick-Coulter)
- 1861 (Spring)
- I'm not sure when Margaret (Stakelum) Branagan arrived (certainly before her marriage in August 1858) - and while I know the names of her parents, I have no further details about them [brick walls].
- My paternal grandmother's ancestors who migrated to Australia were from:
- County Kilkenny, Ireland (Colclough, 1855)
- Glasgow, Scotland (James Graham and Jane Graham, 1852), and
- Somerset, England (Holmes, 1849; Kitching, 1850; Salmon, 1877).
Maternal ancestry
- Mum's dad George Marshall was born in Auckland, the son of English migrants. His father was born in Wimbledon, Surrey, with Norfolk and Hampshire in his ancestral tree. His mother was born in Saltfleetby, Lincolnshire, with Kent and Lincolnshire in her ancestral tree.
- Mum's mum Elizabeth (Campbell) Marshall migrated to New Zealand when she was a 5-year-old in 1923. Her father Norman Michael Campbell (my great-grandfather) was born in South Africa. He married my great-grandmother Lydia Talbot in Northumberland. We don't know much about Norman Michael Campbell's parents, only that both his parents died while he was still young and his father was a Scotsman named Norman [brick wall].
My Wikitree research
- I'm particularly keen to "grow branches", meet family members (please get in touch!), and to add information to the my ancestor's Wikitree profiles.
- I'm also keen to:
- learn more about my migrating ancestors
- bust my brick walls (particularly those highlighted above), and
- contribute to expanding Victoria's footprint on Wikitree [see: G2G post on progress for Victorian Wikitree profiles: 18 Aug 2023].

Can I suggest, if you find any Australian orphans that need some PI, that you add them directly to our Australian category? This is the one our Australian profile improvers often use when looking for profiles to work on.
Thanks! Regards, Margaret, PC Australia Project.
Firstly - I look forward to teaming up with you next week as 'Wizards of Aus' members for the Connect-A-Thon - I hope a big impact for Wikitree and many new and good quality profiles!
Next, thank you for telling me that you have been moving orphan profiles from Category: Oceania, Needs Biography to Category: Australia, Profile Improvement - Orphan Profiles.
I can see that the Australia Project category already has over 2,500 profiles in it, including some that date to having been added in 2020. I am interested to know, does the Australia Project consider "could do with some profile improvement" means the same as "Needs biography"? If yes, great - I am happy to use that category (though I would really appreciate if the text on the page could be updated to indicate this). If not, perhaps would it be okay to hold off removing the profiles until someone who likes to work on biographies has had a decent chance to do so?
Also, you might be interested to see these reports. I think they're really interesting!

Warm regards,
Clare
Yes, everyone is looking forward to the Connect-A-Thon, always a big event for WikiTree.
I'd be surprised if there are many people who regularly work in profile improvement that don't think that biographies are a major part of PI. There is already a link on our orphan's category page to the Australia Project page on PI, but just in case, I've added a link to the section of that page on "7 steps to profile improvement". Biography is number 2 on that list, after sources. Regards, Margaret.
Have you considered asking on G2G if anyone is able to lend a hand with the Asylum cemetery project? Regards, Margaret
Thank you for your change re Galwey-402. Unfortunately what I had there was wrong as we now have new info. In the next weeks ¬I will get round to fixing it. But he is not the sone of Galwey-401 or Galwey-290. Thanks Tim
Further to the WikiTree G2G comment of mine :" Interestingly I note that for some of the profiles with a " This profile lacks source information " attached there are indeed sources attached eg Victoria BDM records and references from Family History books [ with page details ] !!" Please look at the following link as a perfect example. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kuchel-52. Regards Malcolm McGrice McGrice-37
Thank you for sharing this!

I sent you a message a couple of weeks ago about a profile that you manage of a living family member of a notable person on WikiTree. If you didn't receive that message please could you email me and I'd be happy to resend it to you, and also to assist with any other questions that you have. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Living_Notables policy for more information.
You can add the Australia Project account (by following the instructions in the original message) or Living Notables Project account (by using the request form) as the profile manager of the profile. I'll check in a week, and if I haven't heard back from you, and the Australia Project or Notables Project account hasn't been added, I'll assume that you'd just like us to arrange the change for you, and will send details of the profile to the WikiTree team to add the Living Notables Project as profile manager.
Please ensure you follow these WikiTree Guidelines - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Living_Notables when creating a profile for a living Notable or their living family in future.
Thanks, regards, Margaret, Project Coordinator, Australia Project
Thanks for all the additions and editing.
I just wanted to thank you for being a TOP Contributor to the Lippiatt Profiles in January.
I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you put in to keeping my family tree up to date and accurate.
Kind regards,
Tristyn Mikel (Lippiatt) Coker
As profile manager for William Henry Brain Brain-353, I have linked your Brain-1127 entry as a child of William and Julia. I notice that Brain-1127 has no Profile Manager. I think it is helpful to add yourself as profile manager for profiles you create, unless you have reasons for not doing so (which I would not need to know). If the latter, I can adopt that profile. The Brain family is my wife's paternal line. There are extensive further family connections in England to Tasmania - Brain Family 1744-1996, Perkins, Bev 1991, ISBN 0 646 03986 5 which I simply don't have the time to add. If you are interested, I can share a link to a pdf of same. Kind regards, Basil Tkaczuk
Are you related to us in some way. Please feel free to contact me. Regards Phil
You seem to have done a LOT of work on the Colclough's. I would like to talk to you about it a lot more. You can email me at [email address removed]
I just started doing my family tree and I noticed Leila Marion North is related to you. She's my mums mother, making Leila my grandmother, would like to get in touch as I have some imformation that you may or may not have all the way back to Charles Augustus Bowden. Cheers for now,David
Leila Marion North was my uncle Brian's aunt. See: Leila's connection to me.
It would be great to be able to trace the North tree further back on Wikitree, I'll contact you by private message, would be glad to collaborate.
You may already be doing this but I thought I would write in case you aren't.
I noticed your Irish brick walls, and their mid-1800's timeframe, and thought I would suggest an avenue of research that I have found productive for it. Due to the Irish Civil registry Birth coverage lagging sometimes 20 years behind in Catholic areas compared to Protestant, I have looked first to establish the full spread of the family a target ancestor left behind, via the oldest Civil Marriages I can find for that family in that district. The location key is the Irish Townland, so you must be fairly certain of that first, but the advantage us Australians have is our foreknowlege of parents names for all our States' Civil death indexes. So what you look for in the images of the Civil Marriages for a lead is the fathers name first, his occupation, then the Townland name.

I haven't looked into my Irish brickwalls in some time - it would definitely be worthwhile to try again.
I have a question for you - what are the best websites for searching Irish records, in your experience?
(You may of course already researched this but) prior to WILLIAM Jnr. and Frances arriving on the ELECTRIC, and prior to JOHN arriving on the RED JACKET, another SPRING family, complete with older parents, arrived on the MERLIN in 1856, and I am pretty sure they were from Borrisokane.
JOHN SPRING, b. (TIPP) abt.1801 - d.1878; Vic. d.reg. 5088/1878; and ELLEN ODWYER SPRING, b. ('NENA') (prob. NENAGH) abt.1807 - d.1867; Vic. d.reg. 6163/1867. JOHN SPRING and ELEANOR DWYRE have an 1825 NENAGH parish marriage (FMP). They then had children Baptised in Borrisokane, and are both buried (with others) in Melbourne General Cem., plot MGC-RC-Comp-Q-No-236. It also seems that JOHN SPRING had a brother JAMES SPRING (d.1877 Vic.) who came out, never married, and left a Will readable on PRoV which gives good insight into the ID of more of their branch.
Is it possible that your young SPRING branch came out to initially settle in here with their Uncle? Ross.

I don't know much about his first two marriages and why they both died so soon after getting married to him (2 years). What is your relationship to him and was his 3rd wife Australian too? many thanks Graham Wilson
Perhaps when Emily and Margaret died, it was due to complications resulting from childbirth? It looks like neither had children. I had a quick look in at Walter's third wife (Bridget, but I couldn't work out where she might have been born.
Good luck in your search, I hope you find some answers!
Best, Clare
This FH program is an open to any one, meaning anyone can Add, Edit, etc. anyone's info, plus add memories, pictures etc. It's one big family of millions of linked individuals, so we're one big family. Give it a try, you can copy off this site & paste onto yours.

I use FamilySearch all the time, it's a wonderful resource.
My connection to Lieutenant Colonel Frank Leon Outtrim 1847-1917 (whose profile I recently added a death record to) is only Victoria - my dad was born there and I have focused my research efforts there in an unofficial 'one place study'. I see he and I are currently 20 degrees on Wikitree, which isn't too far but certainly not close!Â
Best wishes to you too in your family history research — are you and Frank closely related?
Sincerely, Clare
Many thanks,
Would really appreciate some assistamce perhaps? I was adopted so do not sport the Chapman name my email is [email address removed] I was born Christopher Chapman in Sault Ste, Marie Canada.
I would suppose by the other entries, that we are not related but unaware of a connection.
Cheers, Ian Keith Smiley
we wonder why you are involved with the family of Dunlop, Olivia Mary and Hughina Adelaide ? Olwyn my wife, is the daughter of Edna Agnes Isobel Dunlop, the missing family member of Walter and Mary Dunlop. We would be very interested to hear from you!! We could be helpful to give you further info of the family. Kind regards, Olwyn and Manfred Scharley
I'm sorry I didn't come back to you sooner, and thanks for your note! I am 18 degrees from Hughina, so my relationship is not close. I have been on a bit of a Wikitree mission, to add sources to Victorian profiles, and came across the Dunlop profiles in that mission.
Apologies again for my slow reply, and all the best in your family research!

Thanks!
I see you edited a number of Humphrey profiles, so I assume we may be related in some way, most of my work is in Ancestry however I did export an older tree into wikitree some years ago, my ggg Grandfather was John Humphrey and gg grandfather was Frederick, his brothers were Henry and Herbert and one sister Elizabeth. I see you seem to be connected to Henry's side and if so I look forward to seeing there profiles updated. I have some of pictures of his side including Frederick William whom lost his life in WW1. Happy to exchange information with you if you wish. ps I have done a dna test which is in wikitree and ancestry best regards Rod Humphrey
It would be great to get your pics on Wikitree - let me know if you need a hand, always happy to help!
Have a great festive season! Christine
I have just added some notes to the Profiles you have edited recently for a Marriage in 1936 between Ernest Arthur Little and Margaret Louisa Jane Rawlings. That particular marriage can NOT have ever taken place because THAT Ernest Little actually drowned aged 7 years during 1918. Thus he could never have married. We respectfully suggest that you continue searching for the correct Ernest Little and wish you all the best in your efforts. Regards Geof.
Thanks for your note.
It's sad to hear that Ernest drowned at just the age of 7.
I did want to point out, though, that I did not edit for a marriage in 1936 between Ernest Arthur Little and Margaret Louisa Jane Rawlings.
I reviewed the edits I made to these to profiles and there are only two: 1. Added location and maintenance tags to Ernest's profile, including a 'Needs Marriage Record' tag, which flags that no records are provided for a marriage recorded in the profile. 2. Added an 'unsourced' and maintenance tags to Margaret's profile, including a 'Needs Marriage Record' as described in pt 1. above.
Best for all your future family history research, and thanks for correcting mistakes on Wikitree (although this time I wasn't the culprit of the mistake :) )
Clare
Thanks for clarifying your role in this situation, I hope that my comments were not construed as being accusatory. Hopefully the person [culprit] who "connected" these two people will see the notes and subsequently "disconnect" Ernest from Margaret. It was presumptuous of me to think that you had "connected" them. I thought Margaret may have been a relative of yours and that you would be seeking to expand on your trees. I appreciate your courteous response. I admit to having a giggle over this situation. Best Wishes, Geof

Very impressed, you have done a beaut job in editing Ernest's profile, the newspaper excepts top it off. Much Appreciated. Geof
Thank you for your help and, interest in my tree. It was very much appreciated. Kind Regards, Anne 🙏
I actually only changed the LNAB for James Mitchell - not his parents. Changing a LNAB shows in the change logs as "creating" and then "merging", but it's nothing more than changing LNAB.
If you look at the change log for James Mitchell (1895-1896) you will see that he had Gertrude Lily (Mitchell) Atkinson and James William Atkinson set as his parents since May 2014 (not Ciara Humphries and Unknown Mitchell your refer to).
The information I discovered was his birth record, which I did add to his profile at the time of changing last name at birth.
Let me know if you need anything further on this,

Hope you're well, Clare
I can't see a profile there for Charles and Susan Eastwood. Let me know if you run into any issues creating them.
Good stuff going through the photos! I too have a Tipperary connection, my second great-grandfather William Spring, who came to Australia 1861 (aged 18 years and traveling with his sister) was from Tipperary.
I love how your bushranger connection has become an education connection, hehe!
Clare
If you are having any trouble with Wikitree, including with editing the profile for Hannah Jane (Eastwood) Fogarty, or with uploading photos, please feel free to email me and I will assist putting photos online.
Best regards,
Clare
I haven't been able to find a reference to Arthur Henry Spring in the tree I have on MyHeritage? My research is all on Wikitree, MyHeritage is just a blip that I haven't invested much into..
I did find Arthur on Wikitree, though: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spring-3051, sorry no information beyond the birth record.
Good luck, and if you do find anything I'd be happy to assist adding it to Wikitree!
Best, Clare

If I click on that, there is an error message "Sorry - our system is experiencing a technical problem. Please try again later. (Error code: { {errorCode} })". This error message is not well expressed! But it arises because the 5f5d57c51e980e23d5bdb9b1 code was specific to your temporary session, and will not work for anyone else (or probably even for you after an hour or two expiry time).
They have accidentally or deliberately designed their system so that there is no ongoing way to link to search results. This is confirmed at this link which says "It is not possible to link to the search results page."

Thank you for your participation in October’s 2020 Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.
Keep up the great work!

Since you manage, or have contributed to, a number of Prentice profiles I invite you to check-out the new One Name Study for the Prentice surname. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Prentice_Name_Study
Best - RP
The Prentice profiles I manage are cousins, I haven't (yet?) come across the name in my ancestral lines.
Thanks for your note and good luck with your study, I have had a good go at it with the Spring study and have found it to be a lot of work but worthwhile!
Best,
Clare
You have done so much work that I can piggy back on.
