[Since Dunk uses the journals by talking, it may not be a surprise to most Readers to hear noises coming out of their journal. They may, however, be surprised to find that it's singing.]

Put the lime in the coconut and drink 'em both together, put the lime in the coconut, then you'll feel better!

[Is Niffty necessarily aware she's doing this? Good question! Is she going to stop? Probably not! Are you welcome to join in on the round? Absolutely you are! Is she going to say her choice of song is Husk's fault? You bet she is.

Some time later, after she's been distracted from her sing-along:]

I found some really silly comic books while I was cleaning!

[Hey Editors, did you know that your journals can do voice? Well, they can! Provided you took Unmute, anyway. Though, like, probably the same thing that keeps Actors and NPCs from reading your journals is probably keeping them from overhearing or at least processing the voice from the journal. We hope, anyway.

But yes, about midway through the first week of the voyage, you'll find out that as you turn to a certain page, instead of text there'll be a person's voice speaking and what it says is this:]

Hello? This is Ser Duncan the Tall and I think I know what we are here to do. 'Tis about the stolen jewels that everyone is talking about. I have been informed by Dame Isra of the Conclave, a most puissant Prism Knight, that they are extremely cursed objects that cause disaster and chaos in their wake. We need to steal them from the thief and destroy them and only then will they no longer work their evil ways upon the Story and the Ship.

[He pauses for a moment and then adds,]

Also, I am having a very strange experience where I seem to be Acting, but retain my own mind. I do not know if I could help another Actor find his own mind again, but I would try.

This is Hikaru. Or, for the duration, Kaoru Tsukuda, retired combat pilot for “the Coalition” of “the Orion Sector.” I didn’t make that up, exactly - rather, it feels like the Story suggested an alias and Role for me without my becoming an Actor, one backed up with a passport and tickets with that name on it… which is fascinating. Siobhan appears to be here with me.

We seem to be in a hotel, on a space station in the neutral zone for two interstellar powers at a tense peace, - and we have tickets for a thirteen day cruise for two on the good ship Princess of Chiron. The station’s a proverbial wretched hive of scum and villainy, of course, and there’s likely to be skullduggery in the background, but for a little while, at least, we can relax.

The itinerary includes a stop off at - get this - a beach resort of a planet named Caladan, of all things.

So. All Editors check in?

ETA, that evening:

Two notes.

First, if the crown that woman at the Jump reception wore isn't part of the stolen Crown Jewels I will personally eat it.

Second, I am avoiding the mess hall if at all possible, but going elsewhere requires reservations in advance. If anyone would like to skip the lines with me, let me know if you'd prefer French, the Xuilarh grill or Imperial Rukhir cuisine. Or the one white-tie Italian place, if you'd like to try good pizza.

[He's been thinking about this for a bit, but you know what, sure. Ask the group.]

[The text is very neat Japanese, though there's a slight shake in some of the characters.]

What do you consider a monster?

Not as in a scary creature from the darkness. I mean as in a monstrous person.

For instance, how many people does it take for them to kill before they're a monster? Even if they were trying to protect people?

[That part's crossed out, but it's still faintly legible.]

Or could it just be as simple as treating someone badly who didn't deserve it? Is that person a monster?

I don't know.

[He hesitates for a bit, trying to figure out if he wants to sign it or not.]

[Screw it. Let everyone know.]

[Hisako draws this out in extra-elegant inkbrush calligraphy.]

My dearest strangers, acquaintances, friends etc, I've been thinking.

Many are the rules and happenings here that we just have to fumble our way into if we don't make friends who fill us in on everything. That's not a very good system. I flatter myself I'm cute and charming but I didn't discover the 'safe room' for months, and didn't enjoy finding out the way I did. Now, I have seen Hikaru's notes on the use of varied and sundry devices which is quite useful. We should make such a resource for living here generally. A pamphlet or a booklet, something along those lines.

Potential topics: Stories obviously, that we can learn to conjure items out of books, other odd things that we can find ourselves able to do, the workings of the bulletin board and these linked diaries, the safe room, unusual dietary requirements, death, what evidence there is of not missing anything important back home while here, how to adjust to going from being driven and busy to being abruptly at leisure. What else? I am absolutely sure I still don't know all of it myself.

So is there some kind of protocol for what we're supposed to tell people in the story, or not tell them?

At least one person in the last story guessed we'd come there to help with the god death thing and I didn't exactly lie to her, but if there's rules we're supposed to stick to it might be good to know that for the next one.

[The message written on the bulletin board is in Rezo's distinctive handwriting, which is very tidy and formed with very straight lines, almost mechanical in appearance.]

It's clear that our next Story will take place in this "outer space" but we don't know the actual plot yet. I have been watching the recommended reading, though I have only seen the first few parts.

If the next story is similar to the plot of Captain Tylor so far, we may be involved in an "interstellar" war. Even if Captain Tylor is a comedy, I doubt it would feel so amusing to be actively involved in one.

If you've looked at the recommended reading and supplemental materials, please let us know what you've observed that may be relevant to the next story. I'd personally like to be better prepared than I was last time.

[...Of course, last time he was acting and thus couldn't even remember the Library, but perhaps he'll be lucky enough to keep his memories this time.]

[All typos are [sic]. Spelling is pretty slapdash in most of the circles Angua runs in.]

Didn't want to go into stories so confused like last time. Been reading a lot about space. It's confusing stuf but I think I've got the gist of it.

One thing though: Al books say that most worlds are round like bals, not flat like plates. Do any of you actualy come from roundworlds?

[Once more a series of Nostraman runes, which.. are handily translated by the Library, hooray!]

In light of the request to learn hand to hand combat - which I will not teach - and someone else's very sensible suggestion of get. a. gun, I am willing to instruct a small number of people on which end of the pistol points towards the enemy, how to prevent it from killing YOU, and why a force multiplier is a very sensible thing to have on hand. Especially given so many of you are so small and comparatively frail.

Remember, my fellow Editors, no amount of learning how to throw a punch is going to help you when your enemy has a lasgun and a bad attitude.

Or is a Primarch. A high enough caliber boltgun, however, has a reasonable chance of slowing us down long enough for you to find a safer refuge than line of sight. And we are not the most terrible thing that may be faced in these Stories. Weapons were invented to curb these selfsame advantages!

My generosity has limits. I will not instruct other forms of weapons, but I'm sure others can. If you have such an ability and willingness to teach, leave a note attached to this one so others may find you.

[He's been lurking around the bulletin board for a bit, trying to figure out how it works...]

[Finally, he puts something up himself. His handwriting is extremely formal. The font largely looks almost but not quite Chinese, with punctuated bits of almost-Japanese and almost-Korean as well.]

Esteemed Editors,

What doth be the definition of a 'god' in thy world? It seems as though they art very different in form and function. Where I wert summoned here from, gods doth be beings summoned from another world in order to shape it.

They art also called dragons, Endless, or the Unfading Ones.

What of your lands?

My fellow Editors,

If the pizza delivered to us the other day is to be the standard quality of fare we can expect from our hosts here at the library, then I think it would be to everyone’s benefit for more of us to know how to cook. Though I didn’t learn how until adulthood, I consider myself to be a fairly successful chef these days, and would be willing to offer lessons to any other editors who were similarly unimpressed by our welcome back “feast.”

On a similar note: if the last two stories are representative of the kind of situations we will be getting thrown into, I think it’s reasonable to expect a certain amount of physical peril.

I’m a bartender, not a warrior, but I think it might unfortunately be prudent to learn the basics of some form of self defense. If anyone would be willing to take a rank amateur under their wing and offer some pointers, I would be most grateful.

Sincerely,
Iren Suto

PS: No doubt the Librarians can see this message as well. If you are reading this, you are also invited to the cooking class. You clearly need it.

PPS: I may have been laboring under a misapprehension of our current arrangement and apologize for any overly critical words directed at the Librarians. They are still invited to cooking classes, if they would like to join us.

First: If anyone is newly arrived, or does not yet have the skills, please post a message. I or others with the appropriate skills can assist you.

Second: We have discovered, individually or collectively, that those who have been taken here sometimes disappear.

Often in the transition to or from these Stories.

We've recently learned that at least one has gone back, and returned.

The implications of this are significant:

* what happens to us here is apparently entirely forgotten upon return to our homes
* we return to the moment that we left
* we can come back from what is the future of that world, changed.

This is the data as I see it. If you have more, please let it be known.

If any is interested, we should discuss it in a secure place. [What? WHAT? it's not suspicious at all, Assistants. Just a little chit chat. ]

[That's his main reason for taking up his journal. He has two others, and he presumes the color coding will get them to their correct targets, ]

The sketches you requested are in the keeping of the servo skull in the Training Room. [A small sketchbook, deliberately unfinished, with some sketches half done, pages unused, and one page deliberately torn from the book. But it was as Magnus had requested--sketches from the town, of Magnus's own 'sons', of the architecture of each of the main Temples, and one, from memory, of Guilliman, human-sized, in a tavern, laughing while judging a glass of wine. The skull will let anyone look, but only Magnus can remove it from the skull's custody. In the back, on a slip of paper that is a recipe for gluten free brownies on the back, is a small sentence, written in slightly uncertain Prosperine script. 'Would you have him do it again?'

And the next. ]

Paenitent me facti mei. Mihi dolet quod fortasse te offendi.
[It's a simple enough apology, but it was important for him to write it in High Gothic. The situation demanded it. ]

Good morning, everyone.

Has anyone seen Claire Ryland today? I had more to talk with her about on something, but cannot seem to find her, and I've been looking.

Claire, if you spot this, just. Let me know where to meet?

[This is posted just prior to Laina discovering a certain book and plot.]

[A FEW HOURS LATER...]

[This section is written with a glitter pen. At least it's black ink.]

Good news bad news!

I found Claire! Or rather, the book she's in. It's, uh. I think it's a book of her own story.

Which is also the bad news, as it means she is presently Acting.

As herself.

So please, uh. Keep that in mind?

Been thinking that maybe it would be a good idea for me to learn how to cook.

If anyone would be willing to help a girl learn, I might find it in my heart to thank you. With the cooking.

I have a weird question.

[The writing comes a little slow, almost hesitant, until it's finally all out.]

I went home and came back. I don't know how, all I know is that I went home after River's End. Apparently there was a book and people could read it and see what was happening while I was home, and then... I appeared again as if I was coming out of a Story.

And no, I didn't remember what happened at home while I was there.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Since I had a handful of people ask if I could teach them my brand of magic, I thought it wise to discourage as many of you eager beavers as possible. Come find me and I'll make you write an exam that ought to leave you crying. At least a little. Yrs, Lu.

[Given the Nostraman runes, this is almost certainly Curze.]

I require the aid of an individual or two capable of taking items out of these books. And, ideally, locating the appropriate books for what I require.

Why I need them and what I need will not be written down on these journals.

[A greeting card featuring puppy-angels and funeral lilies gets pinned to the bulletin board, along with a note from Kinjiro. A simulacrum of the card will appear in everyone's journal, though it might look odd given the format.]

I tried to make a complaint about the Story, but instead of talking to human staff, a dog named Harley gave me this. I feel like I should share it with everyone else.
