Jan. 6th, 2026 04:53 amAs a Stormwing, if a mortal nearby is experiencing fear, sorrow, anger etc, Hisako can ambiently consume it and is strengthened. In canon other Immortals and also gods are excluded, but what "immortal" and "god" means in this context is distinct, and it's not clear if they only feed on humans or if animals count too. Let's skirt that issue and just go case by case! Do you want your character's suffering perceived and fed upon?
Hisako can't read minds, but this can give her a bit of insight into the person, what their character is like and what they're going through - it's very different to jumpscare someone confident and someone flinchy. There are no effects one way or another on the person experiencing the suffering, she's not making it better or worse. Canonically people can't even tell it's happening but if you want your character to pick up on her presence, I'm down with that.
It's said that Stormwings "drink" fear etc so might as well get fun with it. If you wanna suggest any synesthetic aspects like flavor or texture, go right ahead! Does what a character feels come with a toothsome teriyaki tang? Are there topnotes of damp earth and peppercorn? Is it like picking blackberries and getting scratched by the thorns?
And if you'd prefer she got little to nothing from your character, whether that's some property inherent to them, psychic shields, or even if they're a perfectly ordinary human and you just don't want it, please tell me.

When presented with a choice, is the character more likely to stick with tried and true methods? Or make something new up on the fly? Tried and true to start, definitely. Lower risk! Hisako doesn't trust herself to have very discerning judgement when it comes to working on the fly. She's much more inclined to try something new if she's had a while to think about it and has consulted others.
What is more important to your character, preserving the past or forging a future? Hisako sees no future for herself or her kind but a slow-decaying stasis, but dwelling in the past just brings pain too. She mainly tries to live in the present. Ultimately though she does look to the future over the past, and much more eagerly when she can actually see something there.
How does your character influence their own story? What about the stories of others? She considers herself small fry caught in large events with little to no ability to affect things, to the point where she doesn't feel she has control over her own story and is a footnote in others'. That's partially the hunger and depression. Hisako is certainly not a major player but she does make small choices all the time, she tries to find solutions to problems, and has her own little sphere of influence that becomes more apparent when she's actually moved to act strongly.
Are you alright with your character’s canon being used as a Recommended Reading?: Sure! It might be better to go with canon Tortall events and characters (Hisako has very little overlap with them) just because there's more there.

The big thing is that she senses other peoples' negative emotions and gains strength from them, and perceives herself as consuming their suffering. So everyone has their own flavor profile and specific emotions spike as particular tastes or textures.

She used to be human and as a human had a very powerful semi-trained Gift of magic.
MEDICAL INFORMATION:
As a Stormwing she's of a type of being called the Immortals. Immortals are "semidivine" and don't fall ill or starve, they die to accident or malice but otherwise have undefined lifespans.

Her metal feathers aren't as noisy as you might think but they do click and hiss against each other. Her scaly feet and silver claws tap on hard floors.
OLFACTORY: Stormwings usually roll in battlefield effluvia and have an incredible stench. Unless I'm specifically saying otherwise, Hisako is trying to keep to more human standards re: odor and hygiene.
She smells like human sweat and skin oils mingled with the tang of steel. She doesn't have human armpits so that's not part of it, and she washes her hair/sponge bathes fairly regularly, but often smells like she could use an actual scrub with soap. If she's had access to a fire pit she smells like ash and charcoal.

She's a Stormwing, a kind of metal-feathered harpy standing four feet something high with a wingspan of around thirteen feet, and has been so for a good four hundred years. As an Immortal or mythic creature, she can be killed but ages very slowly and will stop when she appears to be in her fifties. She has Yamani and Copper Islands ancestry (think Japanese and Indonesian) and some suggestions of lines on her face, particularly across her forehead and the corners of her eyes, clearer in some lights than others.
