Since it's mid-august it's time for a reminder for the DIY folks or those who like to cosplay

It's about that time of year again, and after having this circulate for a year now, it interesting seeing some observations:

Receiving social assistance money needs to be way less fucking stigmatized. Relying on a disability pension, or another income program is not a moral failing.

“But they’re not contributing to society!”

Maybe not by the twisted capitalistic standards of the world we live in, but all human life has inherent value, no matter how they contribute to others.

Does someone exist?

Then they are contributing, by adding to the variety and complexity of the world.

They are also working, because living is a struggle, living is hard, especially for the disabled, the marginalized, the unemployed, and just surviving is beating the odds and triumphing against the forces of entropy.

If you have brain activity, if you have a pulse, you have earned the right to be alive by the only criteria that matters- which is that you are alive.

If you think the only real work or contribution is work for a boss to make their business money, then you are either a lord, or someone so lacking in self-respect that you are proud to be a serf.

And if you make that the measure of whether someone deserves to live or have comfort or security or rights, then you are arguing in effect that poverty and disability should be crimes punished with extrajudicial execution by torture, and that is a level of malice that would be criticized as unrealistic in a work of fiction.

Anyway, I'll let the 11th Doctor sum this one up:

I would like to emphasize that I agree with all of these tags by the way. My post wasn't aiming to pin all of Europe's grotesque racism on the new elections.

A few weeks ago I was at a board game night with some of my old classmates from various mainland European countries. They started talking about how horrible Trump's treatment of immigrants is and how they're so glad to be in Europe where nothing like that is happening right now. I asked them what they thought about the fact that their own governments were complicit in turning the Mediterranean into a mass grave of asylum seekers, and some of them legitimately didn't even know and were surprised to hear that their own governments had enacted policies that caused the deaths of thousands of asylum seekers.

Even here in Iceland, almost nobody has been talking about the fact that some of the far right populist parties have legitimately been talking about wanting to establish detainment camps to keep asylum seekers in.

This post is a few months old now, and the bit about Iceland is now outdated, because Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament) passed the bill approving the detention center for asylum seekers. It will be legal to handcuff and detain children there.
