Fresh start?

I have now archived practically all posts on this blog, as well as unfollowed and unliked all posts and people. Every one of them. Sixteen years worth of posts, 50M+ notes worth (apparently). If this sounds familiar, that's because I did most of this a few months ago, but now it's a complete clearing.

The plan is to start using this blog as a blog. I have plans for publishing my longer form writing, thoughts, weird things I find online, and yes, shitposts, in both short and extended form. Over the years I've written quite a lot under my name (bad idea), under others (better idea, still bad), both privately and publicly (worst idea) - and hopefully this will become a more centralized place for all that rubbish (or at the very least, a linked repository to a self-hosted center of mediocre banality). Less reblogs, more posting. Deal? Deal.

To my dear friends on here: Sorry! If you see a refollow, this is why, you should know the drill by now as I clear my dash fairly often - I am just hopelessly addicted to the infamous hellsite and the only way to be free is by not having anything to scroll on here when I need to focus. If we haven't swapped signal/discords/etc, please reach out.

Hopefully this new "limited-to-no reblogs" rule will help reduce the cursed scroll. I may not be reblogging as many posts on here, but I will likely be introducing a new-old-way to drawing attention to yours and others wonderful posts.

Now let me be clear, I love teaching, I love explaining things, at this point I should quit my job and become a teacher. So, if you have a question, are curious, want to argue debate, my inbox/asks are open again for when you want explanations or advice from a human (as far as I know) and not an LLM. I'll probably source it too.

This is a win-win-win, you can help give me the gift/curse of motivation to write and spend an incredible amount of time researching and pondering the most boring of things, I get a pseudo-productive reprieve from the horrors of my "important" work stuff, and you get longwinded writings about 1920s techno-utopian political engineering movements, or Sri Lankan ancient healthcare infrastructure, or apple trees, or how electricity is just normalized magic, or really anything - seriously just #WasteMyTime3000.

Look, times have changed, and we have grown as a society. None of these are bound by gender or land, and it's time everyone was on the same page.

  • wizard: one who studies, researches, and harnesses the arcane with a focus towards scientific inquiry.
  • mage: one who studies and harnesses the arcane, often through a metaphorical, or physical, religious lens.
  • witch: one who harnesses the arcanic arts through artistic expression and spiritually-inclined practice.
  • sorcerer: a personal term used interchangeably by any of the above. Often tied to a core source of power or a fate-based philosophy, though neither is required. Alternate forms: sorceress, sorcerex.
  • bard: one who channels the arcane through performance, story, or song.
  • warlock: one who develops or wields arcane items for defensive, offensive, or security purposes.
  • alchemist: one who researches, handles, or controls arcane materials and their reactions through scientific inquiry or personal goals.
  • enchanter: one who imbues physical objects, places, or entities with persistent arcane properties. Alternate forms: enchantress, enchantrex.
  • artificer: one who blends the arcane with craft, engineering, or machinery, where spell meets solder or steam.
  • seer: one who may perceive past echoes, possible futures, or hidden truths often through arcane sight or practiced intuition.
  • scryer: one who researches or employs informational arcane items and entities for security or investigatory purposes.

Ripped out, cleaned up, and open-sourced the structured logger I've been using for the past few months. It's a replacement for using println or eprintln in your rust code. I call it vail — the idea being that you respectfully place your data, and in return it will avail!() a well-maintained structured log back to you. Prints to the terminal in real-time (same as println!/eprintln!), while automatically building a structured JSON tree behind the scenes. Call avail!("label") at the end of a scope and it outputs the full envelope with data, codes, errors, and overwrite history (+ overwrite warning).

This is primarily aimed at CLI applications, but this has also been used in server projects with the #[scope] macro where each function gets its own isolated state. Or just use the global scope for the whole application. In my primary applications I do not use println! at all, and only rely on this, which is what you should do as well if you use it. I've built versions of this dozens of times over the years in various forms. This is finally a clean, generic version I don't mind reusing. It has some bugs, and some holdovers from when it was perched inside another program (namely, it was called slog! - super logger, but thats taken, and vail is cooler).

In 1997, local television in Kharkiv accidentally filmed one of the most iconic rave moments in history.

AFAIK no one has been able to identify them after all these years, but the news station did have an interview with them a few days later.

Although they are known as the 'russian rave kid', they are likely Ukrainian (the club is in Ukraine, and in the original interview they spoke with a Ukrainian accent). There is speculation they were someone with dwarfism as well, but again never confirmed.

Weeeeee really need to be figuring out how to build outside of the traditional internet. Meshtastic and such are doing a really good job at what they do but it’s not enough, that isn’t infrastructure. Permacomputing is both a concept and a community of practice oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in computer and network technology inspired by permaculture. In a time where computing epitomizes industrial waste and exploitation, permacomputing encourages a more sustainable approach, maximizing hardware lifespans, minimizing energy use and focussing on the use of already available computational resources. Permacomputing asks the question whether it is possible to rethink computing in the same way as permaculture rethinks agriculture. Permaculture is the science and practice of creating semi-permanent ecosystems of nature. The resilience of any such ecosystem is equal to its diversity and interconnectedness. Permaculture design is a system of assembling conceptual, material and strategic components in a pattern which functions to benefit life in all its forms. It seeks to provide a sustainable and secure place for living things on this earth. At first it may seems paradoxical to connect permaculture and computation. Indeed, an extractive technology that depends on a wasteful use of finite resources can hardly be permanent. Therefore, by making this connection, what we are truly asking is whether or not there can be a place for computer and network technology in a world where humans contribute to the well-being of the biosphere rather than destroy it? And if yes, how? Permacomputing wants to imagine such a place and take steps towards it. It is therefore both utopian and practical. We want to find out how we can practice good relations with the Earth by learning from ecological systems to leverage and re-center existing technologies and practices. A radical reduction of wastefulness is a fundamental aspect of it: maximize the hardware lifespans, minimize the energy use. And this is not just about a set of technical problems to be fixed­—the attitudes also need a radical turn. Understandability is aesthetics, virtual does not mean immaterial and doing things with less is not a return to the past. We want to investigate what a permacomputing way of life could be, and what sort of transformative computational culture and aesthetics it could bring forward. Some additional concerns are of indirect interest because they impose costs on the entire end-to-end process of software creation: it's bootstrapped from machine code without circular reasoning (bootstrappable builds) it's obvious what source code went into it (reproducible builds) it's easy to audit its source code, including all dependencies

have been really enjoying this essay (from 2004!) wrt permacomputing. the modern tech industry is obsessed with whether software can scale, whether a prototype is a viable business, whether code is maintainable indefinitely. it doesnt have to be any of those things! if you know how to code, you can write software just for yourself, or your community, or for one event. and its ok for software to just be that, to be hyperlocal, to not have its own life, to be specific to what you (yes, you!) actually *need* your computer to do.

also if anyone reading doesnt have a technical background im gna plug this workshop i ran on beginners html and css for london permacomputing club. cant reccomend learning browser basics enough as a starting point for getting into permacomputing. we all hate react web apps taking over everything, but as far as standards go, you can do so much with vanilla html, css, and js, with zero dependencies, and it is guaran-fucking-teed to work the same in twenty years. and its fun!

Reading the description I was like "Ah! Sounds like CollapseOS!", looking a the site and the way its written (and the fact they cite in CollapseOS in their 'recommended projects' section) this makes me think this might be the same people, but strange it doesn't outwardly say that. Same style too. CollapseOS is a forth based operating system where even the very core 'words' of the OS are editable, nothing is compiled blobs (unreadable by human eyes), everything is built from scratch and the smallest possible fundamentals, meaning: in theory its an operating system that can exist forever with or without network or updates, as long as you understand the OS. Forth is an incredible concept (and one of the oldest languages) so I love that project with all my heart and its mission, so if they are bridging out from their 'civilization collapse is imminent" into a more, less paranoid, state into 'permacomputing' then I can more likely happily talk to people about this. This is the concept of a MVP or prototype concept for the modern age. Where you do everything you minimally need, while throwing everything you can at the wall to see what sticks, then once you finally find something that works, you rework it all from scratch from everything you've learned. That's engineering, it's an iterative process, it's fun. Everyone should do it more (myself included). LLM's can be a valuable tool for this if used properly and responsibly. Knowing the limits of the tools, and knowing that you will be be reworking and needing to understand how it works on a deeper level for that later rework once you find something meaningful and useful.

Thinking about the Ferengi economy and how they would presumably have the most advanced financial machinery in the quadrant but all of their money is based on actual physical specie. They don't have credit cards; they don't have paper money; they don't even have promissory notes, as far as I recall. They only deal in cold, hard gold-pressed latinum that must be really heavy and really expensive to cart around the galaxy.

That's how their economy survives and keeps values stable in the face of post-scarcity options and possibilities, where physical labor and physical value derive hard direct value from. By requring physical labor and physical transfers, this keeps the prices equal to value of effort to posess, conceal, and labor to keep control of. Additionally, by removing the concept of non-tangible credit they require physical relationships and communal wealth strategies. Their religion is capitalism and economic market expansion, to keep that dream alive they must have extremely reliable economic values. They do not appear to hold the concept of "imaginary" value, such as shareholder value, and by not letting imaginary value derive absolute value they can focus on physical rules of acquisition that has reasonable expectations of value, where economic value is only grown through dealmaking and tangible logistical economic dominion.

I feel like if I were a god, I would spend the first million years or so learning how the universe works before making any amendments to it. I would be a cautious god. Humans would be long dead by the time I got around to doing any miracles.

I come from the hacking world, and I would be spending the first few million years breaking bits and pieces in absolutely horrific ways just for the fun of it and to learn how it really works, not how it's supposed to work. The universe is a puzzle made to be smashed and rebuilt as needed. I would be a truly unhinged god, and that's how it should be.

so now it's called RAAD for "rise above alcohol & drugs" and i need you to understand that someone got paid to come up with that acronym. and then a committee approved it. and then they printed banners, and then they sponsored race cars.

just take a moment and regress back to your 15-year-old brain for a moment: you're in a folding chair in the gym. no one wants to be there. the cop says "RAAD" out loud with a straight face. what do you do.

I would start planning how to get some alcohol and drugs, personally.

A quick tip for any DIYers, engineers, or anyone wanting to build cool shit:

If you don't know the name of a part or how to search for it, but know of something similar that does, then search for replacement parts for that one thing. Eventually(!) as you scroll through the catalogue you'll see what you need and find out the real proper name for it so you aren't searching for things like "mounting rotational platform on wheels like cars but smaller" when obviously what you are forgetting is the name of "wheel hub with bearings" even though you might be a semi-professional engineer and have used them dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of times...
