Sixteen people hurt in explosion on barge in New York — TV

NEW YORK, May 23. /TASS/. A fire and explosion occurred on a barge at a shipyard in New York, with sixteen people injured, three of whom hospitalized in serious condition, CBS reported, citing the city’s Fire Department.

The fire broke out on a barge at the shipyard on Staten Island and burned for more than 50 minutes before the explosion, according to the report. Two firefighters and one civilian suffered serious injuries, the New York City Fire Department said. Eleven other firefighters and two EMS personnel were also hurt.

Hazmat experts, employees of the Department of Buildings and the Department of Environmental Protection have been called to the scene, the TV channel said.
