Anybody who is interested in the whole thing where Megaupload's creators were arrested and the whole thing shut down should totally read this. [profile] synedochic goes through the legal case against them, explains a bit about why they are totally screwed, and provides some context for what that might mean for the rest of us.

(Basically: OH MY GOOD LORD were the Megaupload people asking for this. Like, there's being casual in your lawbreaking, and then there's Megaupload people. Wow.)

The Lord of the Rings Family Tree Project is exactly what it sounds like it is: an attempt to make a proper family tree of EVERY SINGLE TOLKIEN CHARACTER. Now anyone who knows Tolkien realises that this is 1. of arguable sanity and 2. hilarious, so I link it.

Um... I am having one of those moments where now I have a moment to write stuff, I don't actually have much public stuff to say. Er, I am reading Rebecca for the first time, for class, and am thoroughly freaked out by Mrs Danvers, and my partner has successfully got me enjoying a game called Bastion, on top of aiding and abetting my new found Peggle addiction (I am totally a Master of Peggle in both the Deluxe and Nights versions, and my favourite is the fire-fighting dragon because I am badass with that fireball).

How are you?
Two quick things:

Denise has a fabulous post about 'real name' policies that is worth a read if you are interested in such things.

Second: my housemate and I are now going to be recieving BOXES OF VEGETABLES. Like, organic vegetables that somebody else grew but which will MAGICALLY APPEAR AT OUR HOUSE. I am getting quite excited about this, but am an indifferent cook who has no motivation for lengthy and exciting cookery. But you, dear folk of the internet, might know of good recipe sites or other places which might actually inspire best use of this new bounty. Any suggestions?

From a nasty start, today has turned into a BEAUTIFUL day! And soon I am off for the weekend! I am a cheerful, albeit sleepy, Katie. How are you?
I don't even find Matthew Gray Gubler all that attractive, but, um, I can totally see why this is getting linked everywhere.

This is a really interesting article about the possible physical causes of some behaviour.

I haven't seen the last few NCIS or the Good Wife finale yet (I am dying here people, dying, but at least we definitely have season three to look forward to!) omg. However I am now away til Tuesday, so I leave you with a collection of all the times anyone said "what ho!" in Jeeves and Wooster, hahah.

(Always reminds me of Stephen Fry's joke that the tagline for season three would be "They're back, and this time they're ANGRY". Love it. Also: he's going to be in The Hobbit, apparently.)
There has been dashing and crashing and shenanigans, but also, new Doctor Who! Dude, I need a new icon!

latest Who, spoilers ahoy )

Other news: Ellen Page is kind of one of the best things ever, just saying.

Finally, a housekeeping note - I'm doing a bit of flist trimming, in a 'cack, I can't realistically keep up with everyone' way. It's not a big deal, I hope, but I figure not mentioning it would probably bring drama, and also it is worth re-iterating that it's always De-friending Amnesty Day here for anyone who'd rather not listen to me blather. :)

In honour of the fact I now finally have internet that doesn't hate me, yaaaaaaaaaay - fangirl squee!

latest White Collar, which gets more OT3 by the MINUTE )

NCIS new ep omg )
I got to spend some time with [livejournal.com profile] catwalksalone and her husband TB yesterday, and this was an utter delight, as ever. We had yummy dinner - in a ridic posh house, I am easily intimidated by houses (what?) but it was GORGEOUS - and lovely conversation and more weeks should have a Cat and a TB in them.

However, apparently the whole thing where Cat has a field of FAIL that follows her around like a particularly fail-y stalker is true, because omg, I managed to drop my Blackberry and break the LCD, rendering my beloved useless until I manage to get it mended. And then I come home, replace my old crap screen with the shinier one Cat and TB were nice enough to give me, and... MY COMPUTER HAS DIED. Luckily, I reinstalled Windows and it seems to be creaking along all right except for suddenly and mysteriously not knowing I have speakers, but SERIOUSLY.

The SAME DAY. And the same day I got a Cat. COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT.[/totes true science because it obviously has nothing to do with me being a dumbass and my desktop being older than dirt]

So, yeah. Um, if I am not responding to texts or calls, that is why. I'm probably not going to be on Twitter much either, because while I love it omg, it is an epic timesink when you can't randomly check it while waiting for the bus.

(Seriously, my Blackberry was in its protective leather case and everything! *cries*)

Luckily, being the technologically dependent person I am, I gots a laptop. *g*

In less me-related news... I haven't seen all of Castle season 2 yet, but I have now seen the Halloween episode, and my main thought is LOL. I especially loved the musical references to go with the, um, flashback to five years ago. Haha.
SO, I totally bought a Blackberry! It is BEAUTIFUL. It is called Beruthiel, and omg I can now get email and Facebook and Twitter and like a couple of hundred songs on my PHONE. It is fabulous.

(And those of you who have one also - want to swap PINs?)

This is helping distract from the fact that my colleagues are totally mocking me a lot for my technology squee. (Me: "I can get messages from SPACE on my PHONE!" Colleague A: "Don't all phone signals bounce off satellites?" Me: "Yeah, but I don't care. MESSAGES FROM SPACE!") My love for the fact that this is literally true and I got updates on how a spacewalk was going in real time is immense.

(This is also to say that anyone else on Twitter or wanting a Dreamwidth code? I am your girl. I realise this puts me a good couple of months behind the times, which in internet-time is eternity, but still!)

Finally, it is distracting me from the fact that at work tomorrow I am helping with job interviews. As in, doing the interviewing rather than being interviewed. I don't have to do any of the really scary stuff, but O.M.G.
Dear North East,

You are very pretty and have awesome milkshakes and also Cat and TB-the-person-not-the-hideous-wasting-disease and their very, very cute kitten. These are all very good things.

Keep up the good work,
Katie

Dear self,

You, on the other hand, are all tired and weirdly dizzy today. That had better just be sleepiness and not getting sick. Just so you know. You have stuff to do and a Harry Potter movie to see and generally no time to even consider such a thing until *checks calender*... two weeks on Monday. Possibly. This also applies to accidents caused by things like accidentally hitting yourself in the head with your phone. TWICE.

warningly,
yourself, you dumbass

--

Dear Torchwood,

Okay, that wasn't anything like any other series or episode of Torchwood at ALL, but I still think it was excellent. Wow. I completely never thought I would say this, but I am still sort of mulling on it, and that was really good. Goddamn.

Impressed, and also in the "you have the imprint of a brick in your head" way,
Katie

Dear technology,

I would appreciate if you stopped makin me want to buy you so much, but oooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOhshiny.

covetously,
Katie

I am testing out this whole cross-posting thing. I rather suspect it's going to either only post to Dreamwidth, or post many times to every site in the world, including ones I have never heard of, and it will be my fault because I am capable of utterly fubaring even Dreamwidth's delightfully user-friendliness. However: onward!

(Oh my god their FAQ automatically makes the examples be with your username. I know this is completely nothing compared to the awesome of the crossposter and journal importer and whatever, but HEARTS. These people are obsessive freaks, and I love them.)

Um, what do I have to say? I saw [livejournal.com profile] rhube and [livejournal.com profile] newsbot3 and [personal profile] concernedlily this weekend, which was nice. There was geeking and pubbage and breakfast at lunchtime (one of my favourite things!) and Tate Liverpool and SHIPS AND WATER and a few of my top people ever, with whom I got to geek, and really that is more than enough. There should be more of that, and less of the going-to-work-bleugh-Mondays bit.

Hmm, what else. Oh yeah, I realised I made a teeny mistake in my knitting, and am trying to work out if I can be bothered to go back and correct it. It's not even very far back: I am just LAZY.

Talking of lazy, I now have to go and make my lunch for tomorrow, and the idea of standing up and actually, um, making it, really seems excessive. Anyone got any awesome ideas for lunches that I could take to work? There's a decent kitchen, and I should really take more advantage of it. Although I suspect really what I need is a bento box...

ETA: OH YES I AM THE MASTER OF CROSSPOSTING! MY LEARNINGS, LET ME SHOW YOU THEM. \o/ \o/
