1980s - #6: This excellent audience recording from legendary taper Mike Millard captures The Eagles in Santa Monica on July 29, 1980, 43 years ago today, on tour in support of the last #1 album of the 1970's. The band spent over 2 years recording the follow up to their masterpiece Hotel California, and the result was another massive commercial success. When the band released The Long Run in September 1979, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Albums chart. A few weeks later, the disc climbed to the top spot, dethroning Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door. The Long Run reigned for eight weeks in the #1 slot, finishing the decade in that position. The album has sold more than 8 million copies to date in the US alone. It also yielded three Top 10 singles; with the title track and I Can't Tell You both reaching #8, while the tune Heartache Tonight climbed all the way to #1. Download this one to hear The Eagles play tunes from the last album they would record for over 14 years, as later in this tour the band would breakup, not to reunite until "Hell Freezes Over".

In June 1972, the Eagles released their self titled debut album to critical acclaim and commercial success. Three singles from the album, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Witchy Women and Take It Easy, all hit the top 25 on the Billboard charts. Moreover, the album played a key role in popularizing a new 1970s musical genre know as the Southern California country rock sound. In early 1973, the Eagles returned to England, where they had recorded their debut album, to again team with producer Glyn Johns, on their second album. While in London, they did a show for BBC Television on March 20, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today, which is captured in this soundboard recording. The set features several songs from their first album, including all 3 hit singles, as well as 2 tracks from their soon to be released second disc, Out of Control and Saturday Night.  Interestingly, the Eagles do not play the 2 best known songs from that 2nd disc, the title track, Desperado, and Tequila Sunrise. Perhaps those tunes were not yet complete, as the album was not released until a month after this performance. In any event, download this show to catch the Eagles near the very beginning of their career.

On March 22, 1974, The Eagles released their 3rd studio album, entitled On The Border.  During the recording of the disc, In January 1974,  Glenn Frey called Don Felder to add slide guitar to the song Good Day in Hell.  The band was so impressed with Felder's work that they invited him to join the group as the fifth Eagle the next day. The album would go to #17 on the Billboard charts, and spawn the first of the band's number 1 singles, the tune Best of My Love.  Two other singles, Already Gone, and James Dean, would reach #32 and #77, respectively on the charts.  A few weeks after the album's release, Th Eagles played at California Jam in Ontario, a festival billed as The Woodstock of The West that was headlined by Deep Purple and ELP and drew a crowd over 300,000 fans  This FM Broadcast captures the Eagles at that festival on April 6, 1974, 46 years ago today.  Felder wasn't able to join the band due to the birth of his son, so Jackson Browne filled in or him!

In many ways, the story of The Eagles, prior to the death of Glenn Frey, is the story of 2 different bands – the pre and post Joe Walsh editions, both of which were tremendously successful. The pre-Walsh band created a string of hits songs such as Desperado, All Ready Gone, Tequila Sunrise, and Take It Easy. In fact, the album, Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) is the largest selling disc in US history. The post Walsh band produced the album, Hotel California, which is also among the top 20 best selling albums of all time. The single by the same name is consistently picked by radio listeners as one of the 10 best rock songs ever. Walsh joined The Eagles in December 1975, and instantly added a harder, less country, edge to their sound. This soundboard recording from Seattle from August 6, 1976, 42 years ago this very day, captures the band right at the crossroads of their transition. Joe Walsh had joined the band as of December 1975, but Hotel California would not be released until December 1976. Download this one to hear The Eagles right before the launch of the album that would become their biggest success and dramatically change their career!

Whether or not you think Joe Walsh is one of the best guitarists of all time - Rolling Stone couldn't make up its mind, leaving him out of their 2003 rankings and then placing him at #54 in their 2011 listing -  you can't argue that his addition to The Eagles changed their sound.  Simply listen to the album One Of These Nights, from 1975, which was pre-Walsh, and Hotel California, the first disc with Joe, and you'll hear the difference instantly. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles with Walsh on July 5, 194, 23 years go today. This show was part of the Hell Freeze's Over Reunion tour, taking its name from the answer Don Henley provided, after the band's break up in 1980, to the question as to when the Eagles would be getting back together. The late Glen Frey launched the tour by announcing. with tongue firmly in cheek, that “for the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation".

In 1980, after years of infighting, the Eagles called it quits. Don Henley, when asked if and when the band would reunite, famously replied, “when hell freezes over”. Apparently, that’s exactly what must have happened in April 1994, as Henley, along with Glen Frey, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit, took the stage for an MTV special. At that show, Frey, with tongue in cheek, announced that “for the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation". The ensuing world tour lasted well into 1996, re-establishing The Eagles as one of rock’s leading acts. The tour spawned the aptly titled live album Hell Freezes Over, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts. The disc also included four new studio songs, with Get Over It and Love Will Keep Us Alive, both becoming Top 40 hits. The album proved as successful as the reunion tour, selling 6 million copies in the U.S. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles during that historic tour on February 22. 1995, 2 decades ago this very day.

1976 - In 1975, the Eagles released the album One Of These Nights, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts. The disc yielded 3 top 5 singles, Take it to the Limit which reached the number 4 position, Lying Eyes, which went to #2 and the title track, which climbed all the way to the top spot on the charts. It didn’t seem possible that the band could do even better. In December 1976, however, The Eagles would fly even higher with the release of their 5th studio album. The disc, entitled, Hotel California, and featuring new addition Joe Walsh, would take its place among rock’s masterpieces. Ranked at #27 on Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Hotel California would sell over 16 million copies. The album would top the Billboard charts, would 2 singles from the disc, the title track and New Kid In Town. The title track continually appears on lists of the greatest singles of all time. For example, annually, Q104.3 FM in New York ranks the top 1043 rock songs of all time, and Hotel California has been in the top 15 every year since 2001! This soundboard recording captures The Eagles on tour on November 6, 1976, 38 years ago today, in Houston, about a month before the release of Hotel California. The band must have suspected that the album’s title track was a classic in the making, as they opened the show with it! Download this one to hear the Eagles on the cusp of making rock history.

Today, we feature an amazing soundboard from The Eagles at Giants Stadium on August 24, 1994, 20 years ago today. The Eagles had broken up in 1980, and had not performed together for 14 years when they decided to reunite for a tour in 1994. Their Hell Freezes Over Tour, (the name was taken from Don Henley’s recurring answer to questions during their hiatus as to when the band would get back together) was gigantic commercial success, running from April 1994 well into 1996. The tour spawned an album by the same name, which sold over 6 million copies. The Eagles were back on top of the rock world, and continue today to sell out stadiums whenever they get together to tour. This show features a great mix of pre and post Joe Walsh tunes, as well as songs from the band members' solo careers.

Only in America, and in rock and roll's unique history, could 4 men representing the states of Michigan, Texas, Minnesota and Nebraska, form a band that would come to embody the Southern California sound. But that's exactly what Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner did in 1971 when they formed The Eagles originally serving as Linda Ronstadt's backing band. Almost as ironically, the band's first 2 albums which showcased their California style, were recorded in London. The Eagles would eventually become one of the biggest selling bands in the world. Their Greatest Hist 1971-1976 album is the largest selling disc in US history, with almost 30 million copied being sold.  Their 1976 album, Hotel California, their first with guitarist Joe Walsh, sold over 16 million copies, becoming one of the monster discs of the late 1970s, along with Rumours and Frampton Come Alive.  Of course, like many groups we've feature this month, The Eagles disbanded for a time, breaking up ibn 1980, only to reform and resume their career.  This post captures the band during their 1994 reunion. As I have mentioned in several posts on So Many Roads,, MTV’s Unplugged became “THE” show to appear on in the early 1990s thanks to the buzz and record sales generated by appearances by such artists as Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. So when the Eagles decided to reunite in 1994, after what Don Henley jokingly called a “14 year vacation”, it was hardly surprising they chose Unplugged for one of their first live gigs. This soundboard recording captures the 2nd of two nights of recording for the Unplugged show, on April 28, 1994, 20 years ago today. Download this one to here the Eagles at the start of their legendary Hell Freezes Over tour.

1995 - In 1980, after years of infighting, the Eagles called it quits. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles in the latter stages of the Hell Freezes Over Tour, on November 24, 1995, 18 years ago today, in New Zealand. Download this one to hear The Eagles triumphant reunion and return to the concert stage.

In 1975, the Eagles released the album One Of These Nights, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts. The disc yielded 3 top 5 singles, Take it to the Limit which reached the #4 position, Lying Eyes, which went to #2 and the title track, which climbed all the way to the top spot on the charts. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles on tour in Asia on February 9, 1976, 37 yearsago this very day, about 10 months before the release of Hotel California.. While no tracks from that soon to be released album appear, the influence of Joe Walsh is already evident on the band's live performances.

Our second post today captures the Eagles on March 14, 1974, 38 years ago today, with special guests Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne, performing on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Kirshner, who originally served as the executive producer for ABC’s In Concert series, left that show in 1973 to start his own TV program. Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert debuted on September 27, 1973, featuring the Rolling Stones, their first appearance on American TV in more than four years. Rock Concert was an innovative show for its time, as it featured bands performing live, as compared to rehearsed, often lip-synced performances that were the staple of earlier television shows like Shindig and American Bandstand. Kirshner was able to get a significant number of rock’s royalty to appear on Rock Concert, including The Allman Brothers, George Harrison, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Santana, Fleetwood Mac and Steveie Wonder, just to name a few. This soundboard recording features one of the best shows of the series, with Eagles, Ronstadt and Brown performing 15 classic tunes. Download this one, but wait until 11:30 pm to listen to it, just like when you first watched the show on TV!
