Simon & Garfunkel were invited to play Woodstock, but declined because they were working on their new album. That disc, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, released in January 1970, would be both their masterpiece and their swan song, as the duo broke up later that year. While they would have several reunion tours, they would never again release a studio disc.

One of thise reunion tour took place in 1983, some 14 years after Woodstock and 13 years after the duo broke up.  In 1981, Simon & Garfunkel reunited for a single concert, held in New York's Central Park, in front of an estimated crowd of over 500,000.  The success of that show, and the subsequent TV special and album, prompted the two to launch a world tour in 1982 that ran into the following year. They even began recording an album together, however, creative differences caused another split between them. Simon eventually removed all of Garfunkel's vocals from the recorded tracks, reworked the songs and released the album as a solo disc called Hearts and Bones.  Needless to say, that decision kept the 2 apart for almost another decade. This soundboard recording captures the duo before that split, in Vancouver on August 22, 1983, 41 years ago today

Simon & Garfunkel 1970 - Back To Back - #1: On January 26, 1970, Simon & Garfunkel released the album Bridge Over Troubled Water. It's title track, featuring Art's soaring vocals, became a massive hit, spending 6 weeks at #1. The album included three other top-twenty hits: El Cóndor Pasa, Cecilia and The Boxer. At the subsequent March 1971 Grammy Awards, Bridge over Troubled Water won Album of the Year, while the single of the same name won both Record and Song of the Year. A funny (as in unusual) thing happened, however, between the album release and the awards. Simon and Garfunkel broke up. Bridge Over Troubled Water, their finest work, would be their last studio album. The two had been at odds during the album's recording, arguing so furiously over the 12th track that they eventually released the disc with only 11 songs. Differences in musical direction, the strain of working together for so many years (they had been childhood friends), the rigors of touring, and Garfunkel's new found love of acting, all combined to bring an end to the partnership.  This soundboard recording from Paris from May 1, 1970, 54 years ago today, captures the duo on their final tour before their breakup. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The biggest act inducted at the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall of fame ceremony was clearly The Who, who played a 3 song set. But some of the biggest moments belonged to 2 on stage reunions that some speculated might not happen. The original Four Seasons appeared together for the first time since 1970.  And Simon & Garfunkel reunited to play 2 tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. One other note - the hall got one right by inducting Bobby Darin, one of the great voices of all time (and one of my favorite singers).

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 17, 1990, 34 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

On January 21, 1966, the single, The Sounds of Silence, hit number 1 on the Billboard Charts. Ironically, the song had been released 2 years earlier on Simon and Garfunkel’s first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, an album that had been a commercial flop. Moreover, at the time the song entered the charts, Simon and Garfunkel were not working together, the duo having broken up in 1965. Commercial success got them back together, resulting in the release of 2 classic albums in 1966. In January, they released The Sounds of Silence, capitalizing on the success of the single! Then in October, they released Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. The 2 discs firmly established the genre we now call folk rock, and were filled with songs which today are classics, including Scarborough Fair, I Am A Rock, Richard Cory, , Homeward Bound, and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy). This soundboard recording, from Buffalo New York, from January 2, 1967, 56 years ago this very day, captures Simon and Garfunkel just a few months  after the release of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.

In 1967, Simon & Garfunkel maintained a low profile, spending most of their time in the studio recording the album Bookends, which would not be released until 1968. They released 2 singles that year, At The Zoo and Fakin' It, which went to #16 and #23, respectively, on the Billboard charts. Both would later be included on Bookends. The one major event in 1967 for the duo was their appearance at the Monterery Pop Festival on June 16, where they closed the first night of the 3 day event. This soundboard recording captures Simon & Garfunkel about a year earlier, on France on June 26, 1966, 56 years ago today.

It was the first major rock festival that attracted national attention (the Magic Mountain festival took place a week earlier to far less fanfare - go here for more on that), hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. As part of this month's tribute to 1967, we're going to help you re-live that event over the next 3 days, capturing each of the festival's unique sessions. All of these are soundboard recordings! We start with this post of the Friday Evening session, featuring Simon & Garfunkel and The Animals, from June 16, 1967, 55 years ago today.

A couple of quick notes: This is an expnaded version of the show, with more songs thna the one I posted for the 50th anniversary. It also includes a bonus disc of interviews and commercials. The tracks are number from 1 to 151 across the 12 CDs that make up this set, so today wil end at track #21 and tomorrow will pick up at track #22, whie post #2 will end at track #65 with the next day picking up at track #86.  Enjoy the tunz.

1975 - After the break up on Simon & Garfunkel in 1970, Paul Simon embarked on a solo career and found instant success. His self titled album, released in 1972, went to#4 on the billboard charts and spawned the hits singles Mother & Child Reunion and Me &Julio Down By The School Yard. The next year, he released the album There Goes Rhymin' Simon which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, as did the singles Kodachrome and Loves Me Like A Rock. Then in October 1975, he released the disc Still Crazy After All These Years which would become his only solo #1 album, and yield his only solo #1 single, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.  During a brief tour of Europe in December 1975, in support of his latest album, Simon's solo success took a back seat to a one night only reunion.  As captured in this FM broadcast, on December 11, 1975, 46 years ago today, Art Garfunkel joined Simon on stage in London for 4 songs.  rekindling hopes for a reunion.  The two had reconciled to some degree earlier that year, with Garfunkel collaborating with Simon on the tune My Little Town.  Despite that, it would take 7 years, until 1982, before the duo would reunite for a tour, only to have  the old wounds re-emerge and drive them apart again,

On March 17, 1967, 53 years ago today, the night before they officially launched their first European tour, Simon & Garfunkel recorded a show which would be broadcast on Granada TV in May. The set, as captured in this soundboard recording featured tunes from their 2 1966 Billboard Top 20 1966 albums, Sounds Of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.  The tour was a tremendous success for the duo, drawing rave reviews, such as this one from Nick Jones of Melody Maker wrote ‘Two people, one guitar, gave a concert of overwhelming beauty, compassion, and entertainment… Paul Simon is mainly responsible for the songwriting, and his fiery guitar playing makes enough sound to be a complete backing group. But they don’t need one. Lean, blond Garfunkel stands rather shyly in the gloom as Paul gradually builds up rapport with the audience, slowly, delightfully nervously, breaking ice that must be broken for everyone to enjoy themselves. This is done mainly with their songs – beautiful harmonies, words biting home, guitar passages punching behind the lyric, driving, and falling."

A year prior to Woodstock, Simon & Garfunkel were riding a wave of critical and commercial success. The film, The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Dustin Hoffman in his breakthrough role, featured the duo’s music, especially the now iconic tune, Mrs. Robinson. The soundtrack to the film went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, knocking The Beatles’ White Album out of the top spot! In March 1968, S&G released the album Bookends, which included the top 25 hits A Hazy Shade of Winter, At The Zoo and America, as well as a full version of the number 1 single Mrs. Robinson. Bookends, which also went to #1 on the charts, was a more complex album than some of the duo’s earlier work, with many of the songs dealing with the themes of old age and loss. Music from The Graduate soundtrack and Bookends was featured prominently in S&G’s set list when they went on tour that summer, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from the Hollywood Bowl from August 23, 1968, 51 years ago today.! This show was recorded by Al Kooper and was at one point intended for a live release, which unfortunately never materialized. Fortunately, you can download it right here and enjoy S&G at their best.

On March 18, 1967, 51 years ago this very day, Simon & Garfunkel launched their first European Tour with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, as captured in this soundboard recording.  The duo dazzled the London crowd with their harmonies. Nick Jones of Melody Maker wrote ‘Two people, one guitar, gave a concert of overwhelming beauty, compassion, and entertainment at London’s vast Royal Albert Hall… where enormous crowds flocked to see Simon and Garfunkel’s only London appearance. Paul Simon is mainly responsible for the songwriting, and his fiery guitar playing makes enough sound to be a complete backing group. But they don’t need one. Paul Simon - 1980s: The saga of Simon & Garfunkel has been a continuous cycle of breakups and reunions, and their 1982 concert tour was no exception.  After the duo's 2nd break up in 1970, they spent most of the next decade apart, recording only 1 song together (My Little Town) and making only a few special live appearances.  Then in 1981, they reunited for a single concert, held in New York's Central Park, in front of an estimated crowd of over 500,000.  The success of that show, and the subsequent TV special and album, prompted the two to launch a world tour in 1982.  They even began recording an album together, however, creative differences caused another split between Simon and Garfunkel.  Simon eventually removed all of Garfunkel's vocals from the recorded tracks, reworked the songs and released the album as a solo disc called Hearts and Bones.  Needless to say, that decision kept the 2 apart for almost another decade.  This soundboard recording captures the duo before breakup number 3, on the 2nd night of their 1982 world tour, in Osaka, Japan, on May 8, 34 years ago today.  Download this one and you'll see that despite their years apart, Simon and Garfunkel could still deliver perfect harmonies.

On February 23, 2003, Simon and Garfunkel reunited to perform in public for the first time in a decade, singing The Sound of Silence to open the Grammy Awards. Before the show, the duo had been presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring their musical contributions over the past four and a half decades. The Grammy reunion led to the pair deciding to go on the road together for the first time in more than 20 years. The tour, fittingly titled Old Friends, both the name of one of their songs and a reflection of their lives, launched on October 16 and ran until December 21. As part of their set list, Simon and Garfunkel performed Hey Schoolgirl, which they said was the first song they had written and recorded together. In addition, each night, about midway through their performance, the duo brought out another famous pair, the Everly Brothers, for a 4 song set. Simon and Garfunkel said this of Phil and Don “We learned to sing by listening to their records. They were our heroes then and they are our heroes now." Of course, the highlight of each night was the long list of classics, tunes such as America, the Boxer, Sounds of Silence and Mrs. Robinson, just to name a few, that at onetime ruled the airwaves and made S & G legends. This soundboard recording captures the pair on the next to last night of the tour, December 20, 2003, 11 years ago today, in Atlanta. Download this one to hear two old friends put aside their differences and do what they do best, harmonize on stage.

Duos #3: We continue our fourplay focusing on rock duos with a show from one of the most successful though turbulent, partnerships in rock history. The 2 discs firmly established the genre we now call folk rock, and were filled with songs which today are classics, including I Am a Rock, Richard Cory, Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound, and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy). This soundboard recording, from John Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 21, 1966, 4 dozen years ago today, captures Simon and Garfunkel just a few days after the release of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Download this one to get a full flavor of the early work and success of Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon & Garfunkel - 1967-03-11 - Medford, MA (SBD)

The artwork included with this soundboard recording leaves no doubt that Simon & Garfunkel played at Tufts University on March 11, 1967, 47 years ago today.  We have jpgs of posters for the show and newspaper articles advertising the event.  What we don't know for certain is whether the music was played at that show, or at an earlier performance at the same location.   The original uploader of this show make a compelling argument, based on the set list and comparison to other bootlegs, that this recording is actually from a late 1966 performance.  See the notes included with the download for all the details.  Regardless of the actual date the tunes were recorded, this show is an outstanding example of S&G's early work, including wonderful versions of I Am A Rock, Sounds Of Silence, The 59th Street Bridge Song and Homeward Bound.

1969 - The final year of the 1960s was the culmination of a decade of change. The Beatles dissolved and music would never be the same. Man walked on the moon, fulfilling a promise made by John Kennedy at the start of the decade. The peace and love generation reached its zenith at Woodtsock, noty knowing at the time that just months later, the disaster of Altamont would be the beginning of the end. Nixon took office, and the furor over the US involvement in the Viet Nam War reached new heights. Late in that year, Simon & Garfunkel would perform a concert on November 11, 1969, 44 years ago today, at Miami University in Ohio. The set list included 5 songs from an album that wouldn’t be released until January 1970, including The Boxer and the title track, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Much like the world around them, the duo were also undergoing changes. Garfunkel was pursuing an acting career, which increased the tensions between the two. In fact, the stress was so great that the twosome could not agree on a 12th song for the upcoming disc. Despite the overwhelming commercial and critical success of Bridge Over Troubled Water, by mid 1970 Simon & Garfunkel would break up. Download this soundboard recording, therefore, to hear the duo debut tunes from their swan song disc.
