On June 21, 1965, The Byrds released their debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man. The disc would go to #6 on The Billboard charts, which would be the best commercial performance by any album released by the band. The title track would climb all the way to #1 on the singles charts. The band would have another #1 a few months later with the title track from their 2nd album, Turn, Turn Turn, and then incredibly, never score another top 10 single. As discussed in other posts, however, while The Byrds studio work peaked early on in their career, their live apex occurred much later, long after all the original members had left with the exception of Roger McGuinn. The line up of McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin, which came together in late 1969 and lasted until 1972, was group’s longest tenured configuration and the one which established the band’s reputation as dynamic live performers. This soundboard recording captures the band during their European tour in Spring 1971, on May 7, 1971, 55 years ago today.

The Byrds were invited, to play Woodstock, but chose not to participate, figuring it to be no different from any of the other music festivals that summer. The band was also concerned about money. As bassist John York remembers: "We were flying to a gig and Roger [McGuinn] came up to us and said that a guy was putting on a festival in upstate New York. But at that point they weren't paying all of the bands. He asked us if we wanted to do it and we said, 'No'. We had no idea what it was going to be. We were burned out and tired of the festival scene. So all of us said, 'No, we want a rest' and missed the best festival of all."

Interestingly, soon after that decision, York was replaced as the bass player in the band by Skipp Battin.  The new line up  - Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Battin - became the longest tenured configuration of the band.  They also developed a reputation for being a formidable live act, honing their skills by touring relentlessly during a nearly 3 year stretch from September 1969 to July 1972.  This soundboard recording captures The Byrds a year after Woodstock on August 16, 1970, 54 years ago today, from the legendary Fillmore West.

The 1991 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony took place just as the Persian Gulf War started, putting a damper on the evening's festivties. Perhaps then, it was fitting that The Byrds, including David Crosby, reunited that night for their induction, singing 3 songs including Turn, Turn Tiu, Turn, with its so appropriate line, "a time for peace, I swear its not too late."

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 16, 1991, 33 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

For The Byrds, 1972 was th ebeginning of the end.  While the line up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons continued to shine on stage, their fortunes in the studios were in decline. Neither of their 1971 albums, Byrdmaniax nor Farther Along, had fared well on the charts in either the US or the UK. Critical reviews of both albums were often times scathing. For example, Richard Green of the NME wrote "When the true history of rock comes to be written, The Byrds will get a deserved place of honour on the strength of tunes like Mr. Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High, and So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star. Hopefully the writer will not have listened to Byrdmaniax or he may drastically alter his opinion." Eventually, the studio failures took their toll on the Byrds. Gene Parsons would be dismissed from the band in July 1972, and was replaced by John Guerin. Roger McGuinn would cancel all touring after February 1973. An attempt to reunite the original 5 Byrds stalled when their album of new material was met with poor reviews. In July 1973, Clarence White was tragically killed by a drunk driver. That same month, McGuinn released a solo album, effectively putting an end to The Byrds. This soundboard recording captures The Byrds during that turbulent period, on September 9, 1972, 51 years ago today,  in St Louis, which was just Guerin's 2nd show with the band.  Note - a thanks to the Rockying-Byrds blog for the artwork and audio.

1970 - On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows during the fall/winter of 1970 would be no exception. This soundboard recording captures The Byrds in Chester, PA  on December 27, 1970, 52 years ago today.  They get some help on several songs from the Flying Burrito Brothers, who served as their lead-in at sevral shows during this tour.

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 55 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who turned in a perfromance for the ages. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.

While 1967 may have been the Summer Of Love, that moniker most certainly did not apply to The Byrds. The band was wracked by tensions, especially between Roger McGuinn and David Crosby. Those tensions reached a boiling point at Monterrey Pop. First, Crosby angered all of his fellow band mates during their performance at the festival by rambling on between songs on a variety of controversial topics ranging from the assassination of JFK to the benefits of LSD. Then, he exacerbated the situation by sitting in with Buffalo Springfield (filling in for an absent Neil Young) during their set at Monterrey. Soon after the festival, McGuinn fired Crosby. Ironically, even as Crosby was being booted from the Byrds, the group's record label released The Byrds Greatest Hits, which of course, included tunes such as Eight Miles High which prominently featured the now dismissed singer. The album climbed all the way to #6 on the Billboard charts. making it the highest charting album in the band's history, tied with their debut disc. This soundboard recording from the Fillmore East on June 9, 1971, 51 years ago today features a very different line up from 1967.  Only Roger McGuinn remained from the original roster of The Byrds. He was joined by Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin, comprising a foursome that came together in late 1969 and lasted until 1972. The quartet was group’s longest tenured configuration and the one which established the band’s reputation as dynamic live performers. By the way,  after this performance by The Byrds, only 8 more concerts would take place at the Fillmore East, including the 3 final shows on June 25, 26 and 27 by the Allman Brothers. A week or so later, the Fillmore West would close as well, It was the end of an era, an era that had begun in 1967, the end of a time when a $5 dollar ticket would get your 3 bands in one night, who just might play until the sun came up.
