In the late 1960s, in the wake of her separation from husband and song writing partner, Gerry Goffen, Carole King left her hometown of New York City and moved to Laurel Canyon in Califoria.  Working with producer Lou Adler, King recrded her masterpiece, Tapestry, in 1971, an album that went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in that spot for 15 consecutive weeks.  The album won 4 Grammy Awards, and also spawned the #1 single, It's Too Late.  Two years after that success, King made a triumphant return to New York City. Adler called promter Ron Delsner and explained that Carole wanted to do something special for her original hometown.  Delsner agreed to stage the first ever concert on Central Park's Great Lawn, a free event that would attract over 100,000 fans.  This TV soundboard recording captures that famed concert, when Carole King returned home, on May 26, 1973, 53 years ago today.

Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.

On February 10, 1971, 54 years ago today, Carole King, who had spent years writing top ten hits for other people with her ex-husband, Gerry Goffin, released her 2nd solo album, entitled Tapestry, and the rest as they say is history. The disc went to #1 on the charts, and stayed there for 15 consecutive weeks, which is still a record for an album by a female artist.  Tapestry spawned two #1 singles for King, I Feel The Eart Move and It's Too Late, while James Taylor, who played on the album, went to the top of the charts with a cover of You've Got A Fried. The disc received 4 Grammy Awards, including album of the year. In addition, King became first solo female artist to win the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and  Song of the Year. Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, spent 313 weeks on the Billboard charts (2nd only to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) and in 2020, was ranked as the 25th greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This FM broadcast captures Carole on the same day Tapestry was released, playing as  set of song from that soon to be historic disc in London for the BBC.  By the way, I highly recommend seeing the musical Beautiful which tells King's story from her days writing songs with Goffin (and their friends, the song writing duo of Barry Mann and Cythia Weil) up through the release of Tapestry.  It's a wonderful retrospective of not just her early carreer, but the amazing music that emanated from the Brill Building in New York in the 1960s. Note: with thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the original files.

The biggest act inducted at the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall of fame ceremony was clearly The Who, who played a 3 song set. But some of the biggest moments belonged to 2 on stage reunions that some speculated might not happen. The original Four Seasons appeared together for the first time since 1970.  And Simon & Garfunkel reunited to play 2 tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. One other note - the hall got one right by inducting Bobby Darin, one of the great voices of all time (and one of my favorite singers).

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 17, 1990, 34 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.
