Full story
At the church, during the sermon, Alice Glick suddenly collapses onto the piano and dies. Proceeds to make a ceremony in her memory after she left the estate to Springfield Elementary School to fund a new music program. Joe Quimby III intervenes and proposes a music festival as part of his bid to become council president. Lisa is against him, but Mayor Quimby kicks in his son's campaign with free ice cream. Lisa told Skinner that the Quimby family had been running the town longer without any problem.
A hundred years ago in Quimby, Ireland, the Quimby family was struggling to find food. The mother discovered a turnip, but Joe Quimby Sr. stole it by replacing it with a rock, fled the town, boarded a ship, and eventually arrived in Springfield.
Back in the present day, Quimby III was bouncing in a bounce house, while Lisa wanted to run against him in the election, but Devin suggested running Bart's campaign to try to save the music program.
Returning to the flashback, Joe Quimby Sr. and Iggy Wiggum are having trouble finding a better job because they are Irish, and they end up getting hit by bullies while watching St. Patrick's Day parade. Senior tries to get a job from Rigatoni Spanucci, but he gets rejected because he is Irish, and Spanucci sends him into a rolling barrel to kick him out. At the Feast of the 7 Slobs, Senior tricks Spanucci by pretending to offer a treatment, then kills him to take over and claim all his money, leaving a note. With all his money, Senior became rich by conquering many industries, but he ends up humiliated for being Irish. A newspaper boy delivered the announcement of his son's birth, and as a result, Joe Quimby seemed destined to run his office.
Back in the present day, Lisa shares the idea with Bart, but he does not want to be president and is excited about the music festival, being a big fan of the Chunk Mafia. Homer is a fan of the Chunk Mafia as well, but Lisa's idea is to get Bart to attack Skinner by unleashing a swarm of bees at his president point. However, Joe came up with an attack sponsor based on the idea that Bart and flatulence rhyme. Lisa visits the Library of Congress in Springfield to look for a counteraction and discovers that Joe Quimby married Marge's aunt Beatrice Bouvier. At home, Lisa shows Marge a photo of her while doing her dishes, but she does not want to talk about it.
In the past, Joe Quimby ran for mayor in his party. He invites Beatrice to go to the feast of the 7 slobs and would like her to be his campaign manager for the election and marriage.
In the present day, Lisa made a counter ad asking viewers to vote for Bart Simpson and she showed Bart that the poll is tied.
Returning to the past, during the marriage, Senior wants to talk to Joe that he needed to have mistresses to attain higher office. He informs Beatrice about it, he would not cheat on her, but she ends up breaking up with him and leaves. Young Marge asked her why and response the princesses aren't real, much to her sadness.
Back in the present day, Devin receives the election results and announces that Quimby III has won, leading to the rejection of the music program. Outside, Quimby III talks to Lisa about his father and tries to convince her to join his team.
Back in the past, a man informs Quimby to start his governor's race, he confessed to public that he did not cheat on her, and his father suffered a heart attack and collapsed. At the hospital, Senior has lasted few words to Quimby before he passed away, he has shamed on his family. When Quimby cries, pleading for him to make things right, his father wakes up from the dead and tells him to have a son to raise to succeed where he failed.
Back in the present day, Marge and Lisa stop by Beatrice's house. Marge stands in the doorway to confront her about the past, and Beatrice apologizes, explaining that she has already told Quimby what really happened. When Lisa heard the story, she went ahead and wrote Joe's first speech for his administration. During the Inauguration Day speech, he shares the story of how his family ran their business, driven by ambition rather than love. He announces he's stepping down and passing the role to Bart, but Chalmers interrupts, stating that the next in line is the chief hall monitor, Martin Prince, who once saved the music program. Quimby III apologizes to his father for letting him down, but Quimby is prouder of him.
Criticism
The episode received backlash from fans for killing off the character Alice Glick, who had been introduced in the season 2 episode "Three Men and a Comic Book," and was killed by a robotic seal in the season 23 episode "Replaceable You," which was later retconned.[1] Tim Long confirmed that Alice Glick has been killed off permanently and said, "In a sense, Alice the organist will live forever, through the beautiful music she made. But in another, more important sense, yep she's dead as a doornail."[2]
