    Real-world

Nancy Jean Cartwright (born on October 25, 1957) is an American actress best known for providing the voice of Bart Simpson on the long-running The Simpsons TV series.

While she mostly voices boy characters on the show, such as special needs second grader (and son of the town's most incompetent police chief) Ralph Wiggum, fourth grade bully Nelson Muntz; Ned Flanders' youngest son, Todd; local thug Kearney Zzyzwicz (who, despite looking like a teenager, is actually somewhere between 20 and 30 years old, though Cartwright herself said that Kearney is supposed to be 19), and Super-Friends member Kyle "Database" Williams (one of Matt Groening's least favorite characters on the show), Cartwright has voiced female characters, such as voicing the Italian housewife who was upset that M*A*S*H ended on "Lisa's First Word" and Kent Brockman's bratty daughter as seen on "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy" and "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Springfield." Cartwright also voices any nameless girl character, provides female vocal effects for crowd walla (similar to Yeardley Smith), and does the cooing, crying and laughing for Maggie Simpson (and once replaced Elizabeth Taylor's line for Maggie ["Daddy"] when the end of "Lisa's First Word" was used in the season 13 episode "Gump Roast").

    Biography

Cartwright was born in Dayton, Ohio, the fourth of Frank and Miriam Cartwright's six children.[1] Cartwright, who grew up in nearby Kettering, OH, and attended the Fairmont West High School and participated in the school's theater and marching band. She graduated in 1976 and got a scholarship to Ohio University. Most importantly, Cartwright was also the niece of John's older brother and Miriam's late brother-in-law John Andrew Cartwright, Jr. and also the granddaughter of Miriam's late parents-in-law John Andrew Cartwright, Sr. and Charlotte Cartwright.

Cartwright discovered her talent for voice characterizations in the 4th grade. She starred in such films as "Heaven Help Us" and "Flesh and Blood" and did the voice of Gusty in "My Little Pony The Movie" Melissa Screetch in Toonsylvania, and did the voice of Chuckie Finster on "Rugrats".

She actually intended to audition for the role of Lisa Simpson but when she saw a picture of Bart Simpson and under it is said that he is a class clown, underachiever, and a daredevil, she knew that she would rather do Bart, which worked perfectly because Yeardley Smith was about to do the voice of Bart and ended up doing Lisa because she had more of a girly voice. Ms. Cartwright does the voices of Bart Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Todd Flanders, Ralph Wiggum, Kearney Zzyzwicz, Database and more. In the 1998 remake of Godzilla, she and fellow Simpsons voice cast members Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer appeared.

In 2000, she published an autobiography, My Life as a 10-Year-Old Boy.

    Personal life

She met Warren Murphy on her birthday, in 1988, and married him two months later. They had two children together, Lucy and Jack, before divorcing in 2002.

She is a member of the Church of Scientology.

She is the aunt of singer-songwriter and actress Sabrina Carpenter.

In 2006, Cartwright was in the Assembly Rooms venue at the Edinburgh Festival, when a man collapsed. Cartwright came to his aide, telling him to "come away from the light". She reportedly spoke to him in her Bart Simpson voice, so that it was a voice the man might find comfortably recognizable. Australian comedian Adam Hills was also present, and the incident, which he described as "surreal", became the basis of one of his stand-up routines.[2]

    Appearances outside of The Simpsons

In addition to The Simpsons, Cartwright had voiced Chuckie Finster from Rugrats, starting in 2002 after Christine Cavanaugh, who voiced him previously, retired from acting. She began her voice acting debut as Gloria Glad on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Richie Rich. Cartwright has also voiced numerous other animated characters, including Daffney Gillfin in Snorks, Rufus in Kim Possible, Mindy in Animaniacs (whose voice is similar to the vocal effects for Maggie), Pistol Pete in Goof Troop, FX in Fantastic Max, and Todd Daring in The Replacements.

Since 1999, she has been the voice of Dash, the main host of the PBS Kids television channel.
