LiveJournal feeds for Shangri-La Diet blogs

I've created feeds for SLD blogs that weren't being syndicated on LJ. Some of these are fresh feeds so they haven't updated with content yet. If you have any you'd like added, but don't have a paid account, comment with the blog rss/atom url and I'll go ahead and create a feed for it. If you have any feeds for SLD (or weight loss/fitness) blogs that you've created already, please feel free to comment with those as well.

Trouble in Shangri-la?

Greetings!

I just joined the community because I just found you by searching LJ. I've been on the diet since about June 19th. The first two weeks I lost 8 lbs and I have a good deal left to go. I'm going for substantial weight loss here. The third week in I had a stomach virus so I fell off the dieting wagon for a bit. It is really hard to drink oil when you are nauseated.  I find that 3 tbsp of ELOO works best for me and I doubt I will ever try the fructose/sucrose & water version of the diet. I'm not diabetic but it runs rampant in my family along with heart disease. ELOO seems like the best choice on several levels.  Also, I don't react well to sugar oriented foods so ELOO it is.

What I love about this diet is that it helps me in ways no other diet ever has. Believe me I have been on a number of diets and to a nutritionist.  My only issue now is taking the amount of oil I need to start losing the weight now that I am no longer sick. One of my biggest problems is taking oil in social settings. I found that the best way to take ELOO is in a shot glass with ice cold water. I had to chuckle when I saw the community icon. I brought a shot glass with me to work today luckily no one is around to think I'm drinking on the job. :-)

Another factor of the diet that is both good and bad is the hour that you need to leave between eating and/or brushing your teeth and taking the oil. It is good because I have to pace myself but bad when you are rushed or have a tight schedule. I've had a difficult time getting that 3rd Tbsp of oil in lately.  Two is adequate but 3 really gets me to where I need to be for serious weight loss. I think this fall will be extra challenging because I am teaching 4 classes between 2 campuses and taking classes for a 2nd MA at a 3rd campus.

I've very glad to have found this community so I don't have to go it alone.

Progress Report

I haven't posted a report in awhile, mainly because I haven't been sticking to the diet very well. I've missed some doses here and there, and I've generally been eating pretty terribly. The result has been that I'm back up to 166 as of this morning.

One thing I've noticed with this diet: Even with the reduced appetite, I will still eat as much as I used to eat if I'm not careful. When we go to restaurants now, I'll attempt to finish everything in front of me, even though I get full long before the plate is empty. That's a bad habit, and one I'm trying to break. I think if I only ate until I was full, I'd be seeing dramatic results.

This simply highlights the fact that this method helps you control your cravings, but doesn't do all of the work for you. I'm now working on breaking the mental habits that keep me from losing weight. The good news is that without the food cravings, that should be much easier.

Anyone else having similar problems? I'd love to hear your solutions, thanks!

Some links for everyone

I thought I'd post a couple of interesting links for everyone to check out. You may have already found these on your own, but I've found them both pretty helpful and interesting.

First, the forums at Seth Roberts' website:

Seth Roberts Forums

He's the author of the book, and these forums have plenty of inspirational stories and useful information. Reading about other people's progress is particularly interesting to me.

And next, a very good article at Calorielab about the diet, with pros and cons, believers and skeptics. Don't miss the tons of comments at the end!

Happy reading! How is everyone doing so far?

Hi again, my friends!

Well, I'm four days in, and I thought I would report on my week so far. I've been experimenting a bit, because I realized two days in that I was taking the oil too close to other "tastes." For example, I was taking it when I woke up, but then I brushed my teeth, and realized later that you're not supposed to do that.

So, today, I woke up at 5am, an hour before I usually wake up, and took a tablespoon of oil. I woke up around 6:15, and brushed as usual. I figured that I wouldn't get hungry in the morning. I got pretty hungry around 10am, and ate a 330 calorie meal. I sipped a hot cup of sucrose water around 2pm. I didn't get hungry again until 5pm, and I had an oatmeal cookie, and then I had a turkey and ham sandwich and some chili at 8:30pm -- now I'm stuffed.

I'm not trying to give you my food diary, or anything, but this is a good example of my eating over the last few days. I'm doing an "In Control" self-hypnosis program in conjunction with this plan, so it's hard to say what is killing my appetite. I am eating 1/2 to 2/3 as much as usual, and far, far less tortured by cravings and impulsive eating. Most of all, I'm noticing that where once, I very easily gave into cravings (and I mean without a second thought), now I'm far less inclined to do so.

I'm going to try and continue shifting around when I take the oil, to find out what works the best for killing my appetite. I work in such a high-stress job, that I forget I can't eat/drink/taste anything for a two-hour window.

Oh, well, I'm just droning on and on now. Hope you are all doing well, and looking forward to your progress!

Hi there fellow dieters!

I'm trying Shangri-La as well, because I usually give everything a try at least once. Weight-loss plans, usually more than once! I'm going to be watching my measurements as well as my weight. I weighed in yesterday at 146, and I'd like to get down to 125, or 21 BMI. Right now I'm right on the edge of "healthy weight," and frankly, I'd like to be more in the mid-range BMI. I won't belabour you with my measurements, but if I see change in inches, I'll be sure to post that.

I picked up the book and read through it this weekend. I'm not too keen on the sugar water, so I'm using the ELOO entirely. I have just over 20 pounds to lose, so I started with 2.75 tablespoons of oil (the book recommended 330 calories total, so that's what I'm starting with). I don't drink anything slowly, so I'm thinking if I do the sugar water, I'll just spike my blood sugar and cause cravings in an hour.

Since it's my first day, I can't really chart any progress, but I think I'll be taking stock once a week to see how it's going. Wish me luck!

My progress

I started this diet on June 5th, about 10 days ago. I'm 5'7" and I weighed in on that morning at 164.8 pounds. I'm trying to get down to about 145, which would be an ideal weight for me.

The first day I tried the sugar water but could barely stomach it, so I switched to the oil and that's been much easier. At the end of that week, I was down to 164.0 and eating much less.

My wife and I then went on a weekend trip and of course our dieting went out of the window, so when I returned on June 12th, I was up to 166.0.

We got back on the bandwagon, and I'm now down to 163.2. That's almost three pounds in two days. My wife has had similar good results, but I'll let her post and share them.

I'm definitely interested to hear everyone else's stories!
