Welcome!

Welcome to the Shangri-La Diet community! If you are here, it's probably because you're interested in losing some weight and you're intrigued by what you've heard about this diet. I'll give a brief summary of how it works for those of you that are new to this program.

The concept is fairly simple. The creator of this diet (Seth Roberts) contends that your body has a "set point" weight that it strives to attain, and that certain foods can drive that set point up or down. He contends that when there is a strong taste/calorie link in the foods we consume, then our set point goes up. He experimented with many different ways to combat this, but the best method he found was this: consume 100-300 tasteless calories per day to break the association your body has between calories and flavor.

To that end, he prescribes taking a 1-3 tablespoons of extra light olive oil per day, or 3-6 tablespoons of sugar dissolved in water per day. He splits the amounts over two doses per day. The only other stipulation is that you can't eat or drink anything other than water for an hour before or after taking the oil/sugar water. He also says that sweetness from sugar is not considered "tasty" unless it has flavors added, i.e. honey, brown sugar, etc.

What else? Well, that's it. His research says that after trying this for a few days, you notice a markedly decreased appetite and that you naturally eat less than you did before. He encourages a healthy diet, but imposes no further restrictions at all.

Most people who start this diet report a marked reduction in appetite within the first week, and weight loss as a result. It's important to note that this isn't precisely a diet, simply a way to control your appetite. Eating well is still important, but this system is supposed to make doing that much easier.

It has been working well for me, which I will post about shortly. As a disclaimer, I want to say that I'm in no way affiliated with Seth Roberts or anyone associated with the Shangri-La Diet. I just think it's an interesting idea, and it seems to be working for me. Please check out the author's website. You can purchase his book here.
