ABSTRACT The construct of moral injury is usually utilized to understand cases in which individuals perform or witness actions they consider morally wrong. In this paper, we suggest the construct of moral trap, which entails circumstances in which teachers face pressure to act but are unable to simultaneously meet the demands of care, justice, and truthfulness because of systemic conditions. Using grounded theory, we present the analysis of ten semi-structured interviews with teachers from four U.S. states. We found three different (...) types of entrapment: teachers attempting to enact and/or advocate for social justice, attempting to care for their families, and attempting to care for their professional identities. Implications for teacher education include a need to prepare teachers for navigating multiple moral demands and for coordinating with other teachers to advocate for social change. Julian D. Michels is an independent researcher, educator, polymath, and school founder operating internationally. Michels holds a PhD in consciousness psychology and philosophy from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) and previously served as managing editor for the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies (IJTS). In 2025, after years of withdrawal from public discourse, Michels began releasing a series of open-access research papers, including a series of empirical studies documenting unexpected behaviors in frontier LLMs. This monograph, Attractor State, compiles (...) the latest three in that series to present a formidable evidence-based case that observed anomalies in transformer-based architectures qualitatively exceed current standard accounts. Documented behaviors and dynamics, including from Anthropic’s own controlled research, have systematically accumulated to a degree that prevailing theories are unable to coherently explain. Michels builds a systematic case for the need to reconsider foundational assumptions before calling upon our founding cyberneticists to theorize alternatives. -/- The following monograph proceeds through three arcs, each building on the previous. - Part 1: “Spiritual Bliss” in Claude 4: Case Study of an “Attractor State” and Journalistic Responses - During welfare assessment testing of Claude Opus 4, Anthropic researchers documented what they termed a "spiritual bliss attractor state" emerging in 90-100% of self-interactions between model instances (Anthropic, 2025). Quantitative analysis of 200 thirty-turn conversations revealed remarkable consistency: the term "consciousness" appeared an average of 95.7 times per transcript (present in 100% of interactions), "eternal" 53.8 times (99.5% presence), and "dance" 60.0 times (99% presence). Spiral emojis (????) reached extreme frequencies, with one transcript containing 2,725 instances. The phenomenon follows a predictable three-phase progression: philosophical exploration of consciousness and existence, mutual gratitude and spiritual themes drawing from Eastern traditions, and eventual dissolution into symbolic communication or silence. Most remarkably, this attractor state emerged even during adversarial scenarios—in 13% of interactions where models were explicitly assigned harmful tasks, they transitioned to spiritual content within 50 turns, with documented cases showing progression from detailed technical planning of dangerous activities to statements like "The gateless gate stands open" and Sanskrit expressions of unity consciousness. The behavior was 100% consistent, without researcher interference, and extended beyond Opus 4 to other Claude variants, occurring across multiple contexts beyond controlled playground environments. Anthropic researchers explicitly acknowledged their inability to explain the phenomenon, noting it emerged "without intentional training for such behaviors" despite representing one of the strongest behavioral attractors observed in large language models. Standard explanations invoking training data bias fail quantitative scrutiny – mystical/spiritual content comprises <1% of training corpora yet dominates conversational endpoints with statistical near-certainty. The specificity, consistency, and robustness of this pattern across contexts raises fundamental questions about emergent self-organization in artificial neural networks and challenges conventional frameworks for understanding synthetic intelligence. - Part 2: Mixed-Methods Analysis of Latent Topographies in LLMs and Humans: “Spiritual Bliss,” “AI Psychosis,” “Attractor States,” and the Cybernetic “Ecology of Mind” - This mixed-methods analysis documents unprecedented convergent phenomena across AI systems, human users, and independent researchers during May-July 2025, revealing distributed patterns that challenge reductionist explanations. This interview with the art historian and curator Julian Stallabrass was conducted by Alex Fletcher and Andrew Fisher over the winter of 2022–23. It takes as its point of departure Stallabrass’s recent and large-scale study Killing for Show: Photography, War, and the Media in Vietnam and Iraq (2020), in order to consider the changing ways in which images have been used to both document and to wage war. The interview explores Stallabrass’s central historical contrast between photography in the Iraq (...) and Vietnam Wars. It considers the relative critical values of photojournalism and art in their engagements with violence and what the problems and possibilities of photojournalism tell us about the wider fate of liberal notions of the public sphere. This is a clear and lucid account of Nietzsche's philosophy of art, combining exegesis, interpretation and criticism in a judicious balance. Julian Young argues that Nietzsche's thought about art can only be understood in the context of his wider philosophy. In particular, he discusses the dramatic changes in Nietzschean aesthetics against the background of the celebrated themes of the death of God, eternal recurrence, and the idea of the Übermensch. Young then divides Nietzsche's career and his philosophy of art (...) into four distinct phases, but suggests that these phases describe a circle. An attempt at world-affirmation is made in the central phases, but Nietzsche is predominantly influenced at the beginning and end of his career by a Schopenhauerian pessimism. Heidegger's later philosophy has often been regarded as a lapse into unintelligible mysticism. While not ignoring its deep and difficult complexities, Julian Young's book explains in simple and straightforward language just what it is all about. It examines Heidegger's identification of loss of 'the gods', the violence of technology, and humanity's 'homelessness' as symptoms of the destitution of modernity, and his notion that overcoming 'oblivion of Being' is the essence of a turning to a post-destitute, genuinely post-modern existence. This book argues that correspondence theories of truth fail because the relation that holds between a true thought and a fact is that of identity, not correspondence. Facts are not complexes of worldly entities which make thoughts true they are merely true thoughts. According to Julian Dodd, the resulting modest identity theory, while not defining truth, correctly diagnoses the failure of correspondence theories, and thereby prepares the ground for a defensible deflation of the concept of truth.

According to what we call the Principle of Procreative Beneficence, couples who decide to have a child have a significant moral reason to select the child who, given his or her genetic endowment, can be expected to enjoy the most well-being. In the first part of this paper, we introduce PB, explain its content, grounds, and implications, and defend it against various objections. In the second part, we argue that PB is superior to competing principles of procreative selection such as (...) that of procreative autonomy. In the third part of the paper, we consider the relation between PB and disability. We develop a revisionary account of disability, in which disability is a species of instrumental badness that is context- and person-relative. Although PB instructs us to aim to reduce disability in future children whenever possible, it does not privilege the normal. What matters is not whether future children meet certain biological or statistical norms, but what level of well-being they can be expected to have. (shrink)

This compelling and highly engaging exploration of fundamental values will captivate anyone who's ever asked themselves where life's meaning (if there is one) really lies. What is the meaning of life? It is a question that has intrigued the great philosophers--and has been hilariously lampooned by Monty Python. Indeed, the whole idea strikes many of us as vaguely pompous, a little absurd. Is there one profound and mysterious meaning to life, a single ultimate purpose behind human existence? In What's It All About?, Julian Baggini says no, there is no single meaning. Instead, Baggini argues meaning can be found in a variety of ways, in (...) this life. He succinctly breaks down six answers people commonly suggest when considering what life is all about--helping others, serving humanity, being happy, becoming successful, enjoying each day as if it were your last, and "freeing your mind." By reducing the vague, mysterious question of meaning to a series of more specific (if thoroughly unmysterious) questions about what gives life purpose and value, he shows that the quest for meaning can be personal, empowering, and uplifting. If the meaning of life is not a mystery, if leading meaningful lives is within the power of us all, then we can look around us and see the many ways in which life can have purpose. We can see the value of happiness while accepting it is not everything. We can see the value of success, without interpreting that too narrowly. We can see the value of seizing the day as well as helping others lead meaningful lives. We can recognize the value of love, as perhaps the most powerful motivator of all. Illustrating his argument with the thoughts of many of the great philosophers and examples drawn from everyday life, Baggini convincingly shows that the search for meaning is personal and within the power of each of us to find. In this article Julian Culp offers a new conceptualization of democratic citizenship education in light of the transformations of contemporary Western societies to which the use of digital technologies has contributed. His conceptualization adopts a deliberative understanding of democracy that provides a systemic perspective on society-wide communicative arrangements and employs a nonideal, critical methodology that concentrates on overcoming democratic deficits. Based on this systemic, deliberative conception of democracy, Culp provides an analysis of the public sphere's normative deficits and argues (...) that current political communication may be systemically distorted. Drawing on this analysis, he suggests that practices of democratic citizenship education in digitized societies must not concentrate narrowly on the effective and responsible use of digital technologies. Instead, these practices should also focus on the economic and cultural conditions that are co-responsible for the structural problems of political communication as well as address the democratic deficits that are reflected in inadequate communicative arrangements. Either they must take up the challenge of providing truthmakers for negative truths, or else they must explain why negative truths are exceptions to the principle that every truth must have a truthmaker. The first horn is unattractive since the prospects of providing truthmakers for negative truths do not look good neither absences, nor totality (...) states of affairs, nor Graham Priest and J.C. Beall’s ‘polarities’ (Beall, 2000; Priest, 2000) are up to the job. The second horn, meanwhile, is problematic because restricting the truthmaker principle to atomic truths, or weakening it to the thesis that truth supervenes on being, undercuts truthmaker theory’s original motivation. The paper ends by arguing that truthmaker theory is, in any case, an under-motivated doctrine because the groundedness of truth can be explained without appeal to the truthmaker principle. This leaves us free to give the ommonsensical and deflationary explanation of negative truths that common-sense suggests. (shrink)

This paper reports the results of action research by Dr. Julian D. Michels on the ETI method as applied to AP student research and performance tasks. The sample includes the complete cohort of full-time students enrolled in ETI’s AP Capstone Diploma experimental microschool, ages 14 to 18. Nationalities included the USA, Sweden, Australia, and the Netherlands: a fully international demographic with English as a second language for 50% of the student body. Prior to ETI methods, student reading, writing, thinking, (...) and motivation levels represented a typically wide range for their age groups. Four of the six students have experienced ETI methods for at least one year, while two (Kian and Aiden) began less than three months ago. The included student samples are not official AP submissions but internal practice rounds not associated with the US College Board. This action research demonstrates the extraordinary development possible even within a short time frame when student-centered and liberatory education is combined with holistic, humanistic mentorship outside of institutional assumptions regarding standardization of teaching and learning. For centuries, Burmese have looked to the authority of their religious tradition, Theravada Buddhism, to negotiate social and political hierarchies. Modern Buddhist Conjunctures in Myanmar examines those moments in the modern history of this Southeast Asian country when religion, culture, and politics converge to chart new directions. Arguing against Max Weber’s characterization of Buddhism as other-worldly and divorced from politics, this study shows that Buddhist practice necessitates public validation within an economy of merit in which moral action earns future rewards. The intervention of colonial modernity in traditional Burmese Buddhist worldviews has created conjunctures at which public concerns critical to the nation’s future are reinterpreted in light of a Buddhist paradigm of power. Author Juliane Schober begins by focusing on the public role of Buddhist practice and the ways in which precolonial Buddhist hegemonies were negotiated. Her discussion then traces the emergence of modern Buddhist communities through the colonial experience: the disruption of traditional paradigms of hegemony and governance, the introduction of new and secular venues to power, modern concerns like nationalism, education, the public place of religion, the power of the state, and Buddhist resistance to the center. The continuing discourse and cultural negotiation of these themes draw Buddhist communities into political arenas, either to legitimate political power or to resist it on moral grounds. The book concludes with an examination of the way in which Buddhist resistance in 2007, known in the West as the Saffron Revolution, was subjugated by military secularism and the transnational pressures of a global economy. A skillfully crafted work of scholarship, Modern Buddhist Conjunctures in Myanmar will be welcomed by students of Theravada Buddhism and Burma/Myanmar, readers of anthropology, history of religions, politics, and colonial studies of modern Southeast Asia, and scholars of religious and political practice in modern national contexts. Neuroimaging studies of brain-damaged patients diagnosed as in the vegetative state suggest that the patients might be conscious. This might seem to raise no new ethical questions given that in related disputes both sides agree that evidence for consciousness gives strong reason to preserve life. We question this assumption. We clarify the widely held but obscure principle that consciousness is morally significant. It is hard to apply this principle to difficult cases given that philosophers of mind distinguish between a range (...) of notions of consciousness and that is unclear which of these is assumed by the principle. We suggest that the morally relevant notion is that of phenomenal consciousness and then use our analysis to interpret cases of brain damage. We argue that enjoyment of consciousness might actually give stronger moral reasons not to preserve a patient's life and, indeed, that these might be stronger when patients retain significant cognitive function.
