This paper argues that camouflaging cannot be reduced to a strategy or its deployment, because it is a complete mechanical sequence. There is a Cause, an internalized structural mismatch. There is a Camouflage, the strategy integrated into the internal record. There is Camouflaging, the active deployment. And there is the Mask, the integrated and unconscious state. Psychiatry classifies depression as a medical disorder graded by severity and treated, in the first instance, by pharmacological correction of a presumed neurochemical fault. This treatise argues that the received framework misidentifies the object it treats. Two theses are defended, and they are of different strengths. The constitutive thesis holds that depression is a philosophical problem necessarily and in every case: the concept is not a natural kind but a value-determination, since to classify a mode of being as disordered is (...) to measure it against a conception of the good and functional life. The etiological thesis holds that for a substantial and systematically under-recognized proportion of presentations, the proximate cause is not neurochemical dysfunction but a disorder of the philosophical self, understood as the developmental faculty of meaning-making, value-determination, and self-constitution. Four modes of philosophical dysregulation are distinguished: the unbuilt, the collapsed, the starved, and the overloaded philosophical self. Because philosophical and psychological dysregulation converge on an almost identical symptom profile, a nosology that admits only the psychological strand must misattribute the former to the latter, and it does. The argument engages the strongest objections, including the charge that reframing distress as philosophical will deter necessary care, and it concedes that a biologically loaded core of melancholic, psychotic, and bipolar presentations demands medical treatment as a matter of urgency. Over the past two decades, common ideas about autism have shifted considerably from an older paradigm according to which autism is conceived primarily as a pathology, to an alternative paradigm which recognizes autism as a social identity. This shift has largely occurred due to the concerted efforts of activists within the neurodiversity movement. However, the movement has also faced considerable criticism. This chapter aims to analyze four prominent strands of backlash against the neurodiversity movement and argue that they rest on (...) misapprehensions. All four misconstrue the movement by imputing to it controversial and unnecessary claims. Nevertheless, there is a serious concern for the neurodiversity movement, one which is less often recognized: there are limits to what can be accomplished under the banner of destigmatization alone and there is a risk that the neurodiversity movement could be “captured” by the elite or embraced merely for the purpose of virtue signaling. Aligning the movement more closely with the ethics of care to prioritize genuine concern and responsiveness to the needs of autistic people is suggested as a mitigation strategy in response to this worry. Public mental-health education helps people name harmful behavior, seek support, and leave abusive dynamics. This manuscript identifies a narrower adversarial failure mode in open-audience psychological communication: the same detection rules that help victims and bystanders identify harm may also teach motivated actors what signals to stop displaying. This treatise is a first-person psychological-philosophical inquiry into a recurrent experience of my own: upon completing a chain of reasoning whose conclusion appears obvious in retrospect, I am overtaken not by satisfaction but by a destabilizing doubt as to my own sanity. I name this phenomenon post-conclusive sanity doubt and defend two claims. First, post-conclusive sanity doubt is not evidence of mental disorder; on the contrary, its constitutive features—sustained second-order monitoring, responsiveness to reasons, and the capacity to hold my own (...) conclusions as fallible—are precisely the capacities whose erosion characterizes the conditions I fear, so that the doubt furnishes weak evidence against, rather than for, its own content. Second, the demand that drives the doubt, namely a proof of my own sanity rendered to myself, is malformed: sanity functions as a hinge that makes inquiry possible rather than as a hypothesis derivable within it, and no faculty can validate itself without circularity. I reinterpret post-conclusive sanity doubt as the affective cost of epistemic autonomy and as a reflexive form of the hermeneutical silencing I described in earlier work. Integrating metacognition research, the impostor phenomenon, self-distancing theory, hinge epistemology, and critical psychiatry, I argue that the doubt dissolves not through proof but through redescription, and that my own preference for the search over the result is itself the correct standing orientation. This manuscript reevaluates the two dimensional valence–arousal paradigm and situates Jamel Bulgaria’s Core Emotion Framework (CEF) as a structurally richer alternative capable of resolving the limitations inherent in low dimensional affect models. Beginning with the historical divide between essentialist and constructivist theories (Ekman, 1992; Panksepp, 1998; Barrett, 2006, 2017), the analysis shows that low dimensional affect spaces—despite their conceptual elegance (Russell, 1980)—systematically obscure critical components of emotional meaning due to methodological compression, stimulus sampling artifacts, and the ecological fallacy. Because culture is, at its root, lived philosophy—a shared answer to questions of meaning, value, identity, and the architecture of the good life—the denial of the philosophical self is the denial of the culturally constituted person. The treatise advances three interlocking arguments. First, the psychological hemisphere alone is constitutively insufficient to describe a human being. Second, the philosophical hemisphere carries greater explanatory weight because it furnishes the transcendental categories under which psychological phenomena become intelligible at all. Objectivity and patient-centered care represent twin commitments of psychiatry that existing diagnostic practices struggle to reconcile. This paper argues that integrating patients as experience-based experts (EBEs) into the American Psychiatric Association's DSM revision process advances both commitments simultaneously. Drawing on Thomas Gieryn's boundary-work framework, I examine how psychiatry's historically permeable disciplinary boundaries have enabled selective gatekeeping over knowledge production, generating epistemic injustices, particularly preemptive testimonial injustice and hermeneutical injustice, that undermine diagnostic validity and clinical outcomes. I first situate psychiatry's unique (...) sociocultural position relative to somatic medicine, demonstrating why its phenomena are epistemically inaccessible without patient testimony. Further, I address well-established reservations surrounding patient integration, including concerns about intersubjective validity, taxonomic disruption, and tokenism, before proposing a structured integration model responsive to these hesitations. Leveraging Şerife Tekin's Multitudinous Self (MuSe) model and recent recommendations from the DSM's Structure and Dimensions Subcommittee, I outline how patient-EBEs can contribute structured phenomenological testimony and participatory review within formal revision committees. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies (PAPs) pose ethical challenges that existing normative frameworks cannot adequately address. This paper argues that the convergence of belief relaxation (the loosening of high-level predictive priors) and context amplification (the heightened influence of environmental cues on experiential content) generates a condition I call transient epistemic vulnerability: a state in which the individual's fundamental orientations toward meaning, value, and reality become structurally open to revision under heightened sensitivity to the normative dimensions of the therapeutic environment. Drawing on Clifford Geertz's (...) analysis of the fusion of ethos and worldview, I argue that psychedelic experiences replicate a mechanism whereby normative commitments come to appear as descriptive features of reality under asymmetric conditions of interpretive power. I critically examine four leading proposals (Letheby, McGovern et al., Bortolotti, Bublitz) and argue that each remains within an epistemic register when the more fundamental challenge is ethical and contextual: the conditions of power, vulnerability, and interpretive authority under which beliefs and existential orientations form. I introduce normative capture to describe the risk that patients' orientations will be shaped by unexamined features of the therapeutic context, and propose structural reflexivity as a middle position between therapeutic passivity and active epistemic guidance.
