Theories of Consciousness

Consciousness research has fallen into a geocentric structure in which each theory places its chosen property at the center and builds experiments, measurements, formal models, and classifications around it. If integration is placed at the center, systems possessing integration are classified as conscious. If global availability is placed at the center, systems possessing global availability are classified as conscious. The same pattern applies to recurrence, higher-order representation, prediction, embodiment, biological organization, and computation. Each theory refines its starting point and then (...) reuses that refined starting point as a criterion of consciousness. The conclusion circles back to the premise. This circularity creates the deepest blind spot in consciousness research. The field constructs increasingly sophisticated theories while leaving the foundation beneath them unsettled. Measurement becomes more precise. Neural correlations accumulate. Mathematical models grow more elaborate. Predictive power improves. Yet the first question remains untouched: is the selected center necessary for consciousness to occur? Integration, recurrence, broadcasting, representation, prediction, memory, report, and action may accompany consciousness, modulate its contents, and support its functions. Their importance does not establish constitutive necessity. Correlation, function, implementation, and constitution occupy different causal positions. This paper reverses the order of inquiry through subtraction. Subtraction is both Occam’s razor applied to consciousness research and a form of sculpture. Sculpture does not add a shape to the material. It removes what is unnecessary and exposes the form buried within. Subtractive inquiry proceeds in the same way. It removes specific contents, reports, actions, memories, higher cognition, neural structures, species-specific mechanisms, implementations, and substrates, then extracts the causal relations that remain. Its purpose is not to shrink theory. It is to remove theoretical sediment and excavate the natural skeleton that makes a conscious event possible. Subtraction also closes a theory’s escape routes by its own method. If a feature is claimed to be constitutive, removing it must collapse the target phenomenon. If the explanation can be transferred to another function, representation, or implementation, the original feature loses its claim to necessity. Features whose removal preserves one present, one subject, one affected system, and one continuing causal history are repositioned as implementation, modulation, access, representation, memory, or enrichment of experience. Only features whose removal destroys this minimal target remain constitutive candidates. The same logic underlies major paradigm shifts in the history of science. Such shifts did not arise from endlessly adding explanatory elements. They arose when an assumed center was removed, unnecessary commitments were cut away, and a simpler natural order became visible. The transition from geocentrism to heliocentrism began by re-examining the center rather than multiplying auxiliary structures around it. Consciousness research requires the same operation. Before adding another center, it must remove the centers it already assumes. This method repositions existing theories within a causal order. Integration, recurrence, prediction, attention, global availability, embodiment, biological regulation, computation, memory, and report move from definitions of consciousness to functional roles in candidate generation, competition, stabilization, access, modulation, transmission, and implementation. A constitutive theory must explain more than an organized state. It must explain the causal sequence through which multiple possibilities form one present, one candidate changes the same system, and the consequence of that change becomes the starting point of what follows. Appendix B applies this subtraction to Temporal Closure. Temporal Closure proposes a minimal causal container of conscious occurrence composed of multiple candidates, the earlier loss of causal eligibility among non-selected candidates, change in the same system by the selected candidate, and inheritance of that consequence. Appendix C compresses this structure into a minimal formalization specifying candidate sets, present-forming capacity, same-system change, historical inheritance, intervention conditions, and falsification conditions. The stagnation of consciousness research arises from an order of inquiry that keeps expanding the superstructure before excavating the ground beneath it. Precision built on an unsettled foundation only renders the wrong path in higher resolution. The required reversal is clear: Remove the center before choosing the center. Test necessity before expanding theory. Identify constitution before classification. Ask what causal order forms an event before measuring a state. The next leap in consciousness research will not begin by adding another explanatory element. It will begin when Occam’s razor is turned toward the foundations of theory, explanatory escape routes are closed, unnecessary structure is carved away, and the natural skeleton buried beneath existing theories is brought into view. Foundations of Consciousness presents a structural theory in which consciousness is generated by four primitive operators—Orientation, Coherence, Boundary, and Continuity. These operators form the minimal generative conditions under which a world can appear to a subject. The paper argues that first‑person experience cannot be derived from physical, computational, or representational mechanisms, because such mechanisms only describe third‑person structures. Instead, the four operators constitute the irreducible architecture that produces perspectival center, unified experiential field, subject–world distinction, and lived temporal flow. This paper proposes Temporal Closure as the minimal causal container of conscious occurrence. Major theories of consciousness—including Integrated Information Theory, Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, Recurrent Processing Theory, predictive processing, and biological naturalism—have largely advanced by adding mechanisms, functions, and physical constraints. This paper adds the opposite method: subtraction. Subtractive inquiry applies Occam’s razor as far as possible. Particular cognitive functions, representational contents, behavioral outputs, neural architectures, and physical substrates are removed until only the causal relations required for one possibility to (...) become one present for one continuing subject remain. The aim is not mere simplicity, but the exposure of the lowest causal skeleton beneath complex phenomena. The resulting structure is Temporal Closure. A continuing system generates mutually incompatible system-level candidates whose realization would have unequal consequences for its own viability. Viability weights them. Their present-forming capacities diverge. Non-selected candidates lose that capacity first. One candidate remains effective long enough to change the same system. Its representation may disappear, while its consequences persist. The changed system continues from those consequences as one history. The sequence is: Viability Constraints → Information Weighting → Mutually Incompatible System-Level Candidates → Temporal Divergence in Present-Forming Capacity → Earlier Loss of Non-Selected Candidates → One Candidate Changes the Same System → Representational Disappearance with Causal Persistence → One Continuing History Its core relation is: the losers disappear first; the winner disappears later; between those losses, the system changes. Temporal Closure introduces no new substance, faculty, or hidden observer. It reconnects familiar conditions into one ordered causal structure. Once this basal structure is supplied, major existing theories can be reinterpreted as specifying different mechanisms through which the same container may be physically realized. Their explanatory reach thereby extends from mechanisms associated with consciousness toward identification of the causal container of consciousness itself. Because the structure lies beneath particular species, nervous systems, and substrates, it supports a common framework for consciousness assessment, artificial implementation, evolutionary convergence, and limit cases including dreaming, dissociative identity disorder, and sea-squirt metamorphosis. Temporal Closure addresses how one present forms for one continuing subject. The physical origin of qualitative character—why an event is experienced as red, pain, sound, fear, or pleasure—remains a separate explanatory problem. The proposal therefore converts consciousness from an unrestricted problem of attribution into a causal problem of detection, comparison, implementation, prediction, and falsification. (shrink)

I argue that any grounded realist account of consciousness must attribute to conscious states causal efficacy, specifically in a content-sensitive form. Standard objections to epiphenomenalism leave open the possibility of a causally inert yet systematically correlated domain. I develop an epistemic argument against this view: if conscious states are causally inefficacious, beliefs about them cannot be non-accidentally true and so fail to constitute knowledge. Moreover, successful reference to phenomenal properties requires an appropriate causal connection between those properties and the concepts (...) that purport to track them. A proof is not a choice anyone can make for you. A proof is your choice, and this sentence is the first one: call it a contradiction and you have already chosen. You cannot deny that a proof is a choice without choosing to, and choosing about a proof is the act the claim says a proof is, so the denial enacts it. There is no seat outside the claim to reject it from, because a rejection is a verdict, and (...) a verdict is a choice. -/- The paper carries this one claim across three axes. It is stated in five registers (the root sense of the word, the felt sense, the path algebra, the geometric form, and the formal object), granted through six fields each with its own door (science, mathematics, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, and religion), and proved by four arguments (self-enactment, forced order, logic, and identity) that close on one theorem: that choice, cut, first difference, and Word are the same object, difference = 1, the single distinction that makes two out of one. -/- Algebraically a proof is the closed circuit γ₁ = L → S → T → C → L of a four-node strongly connected quiver, one monomial in its path algebra kQ (Stewart, 2026f, *The Path Algebra of the Endomorphism*), which conducts only closed. This paper proposes an additional explanatory direction for consciousness research: viability-constrained information discard. Instead of asking only how information is generated, integrated, selected, broadcast, or retained, the paper asks a complementary question: What is lost? Living systems must remain within viable conditions. Because their time, energy, bodily capacity, and possible actions are finite, they cannot preserve every perceptual, behavioral, or predictive possibility equally. Multiple mutually incompatible organism-level candidates must therefore be weighted according to their significance for one vulnerable system. For (...) a conscious present to form, these candidates cannot remain causally equivalent. Their capacities to organize the organism’s present must diverge in time. Non-selected candidates lose present-forming capacity earlier, while one candidate remains causally effective long enough to alter the same organism and constrain its subsequent perception, action, bodily regulation, memory, or processing. The dominant representation may later disappear, but its consequences remain in the state and history of the system. The contribution of this paper lies not in identifying these elements separately, but in reorganizing them as one causal process from a subtractive perspective. This shift generates connected predictions concerning neural competition, candidate-space compression, subjective intensity, physical implementation, temporal delay, comparative biology, and artificial systems. Its generative power distinguishes the proposal from a mere metaphor or redescription. The paper does not claim to explain why an event possesses a particular qualitative character—why red appears as red, pain hurts, or fear feels as it does. It proposes an earlier structural requirement: before information can possess qualitative character for a subject, it may first have to become that subject’s present. This paper is a theoretical proposal rather than a completed mathematical or biological theory. Its purpose is to identify a causal structure that existing theories may incorporate and that future formal models and experiments may test. Human experience has long been investigated through neuroscience, psychology, genetics, cognitive science and philosophy. These disciplines have substantially advanced our understanding of perception, cognition, emotion and behavior by identifying biological, psychological and environmental mechanisms that contribute to human functioning. Despite these advances, individuals continue to exhibit recurring patterns of perception, emotional response, decision-making and behavior that cannot always be fully explained by currently identifiable mechanisms. While existing scientific models successfully explain many aspects of these recurring patterns, certain features of human (...) experience remain difficult to identify before they become expressed through thoughts, emotions, behaviors and repeated life experiences. -/- The Encoded Pattern Systems (EPS) framework proposes that consciousness is the foundational space within which experience occurs while encoded informational patterns contribute to the organization, interpretation and continuity of experience. Building upon this framework, this paper proposes that many encoded informational patterns influencing human experience may remain hidden while continuously shaping perception, interpretation, cognition, emotion and behavior. Rather than being directly observed, their presence may be inferred through their recurring expressions across conscious experience. -/- Within the EPS framework, hidden encoded informational patterns are not proposed as alternatives to established biological, psychological or environmental mechanisms. Instead, they are presented as an additional conceptual layer that may interact with known processes to influence the organization and continuity of human experience. The underlying informational organization of these encoded informational patterns remains unknown and represents an open question for future theoretical and empirical investigation. -/- This paper introduces hidden encoded informational patterns as a conceptual extension of the EPS framework and argues that investigating their role may generate new directions for interdisciplinary research into awareness, metacognition, adaptive transformation and the broader organization of conscious experience. During 2025 — 2026, a group of independently published theories of consciousness appeared around a shared structural vocabulary. These accounts appeal, in different combinations, to constraint, closure, admissibility, integration, persistence, temporal extension, identity maintenance, collapse, and the individuation of a subject. Put more simply, they ask what must hold a conscious process together, distinguish it from its surroundings, and make it one continuing point of view. They commonly reject the idea that consciousness is a separately produced output of otherwise non-experiential (...) processing. Many instead relocate the explanatory problem: from how physical activity generates experience to what organization makes a physical or structural process identical with, constitutive of, or capable of sustaining experience. This article reviews that emerging literature as a convergent cluster or proto-school rather than an established school. It distinguishes four families: identity-and-closure theories, persistence-and-admissibility theories, relational and temporal-structure theories, and consciousness-first structural ontologies. Their shared contribution is to connect three questions often discussed separately: what makes experience unified, what makes it belong to one subject, and what lets that subject persist while its experience changes. Generative AI is relevant not as a mark against this research, but as part of its method and historical setting. AI systems can generate candidate arguments, extend implications, produce counterexamples, and accelerate comparison. The arguments that result remain open to the same conceptual, textual, and empirical assessment as arguments developed by other means. (shrink)

David Cota’s evaluation of the author’s “participatory explanation” approach to consciousness reveals fundamental conceptual problems that plague contemporary consciousness studies. Cota identifies a critical conflation between reason as a symbolic-operational function, and consciousness as a phenomenal-experiential field, that undermines the theoretical coherence of participatory approaches. This paper develops a novel theoretical framework called “Ontological Reflexivity Theory” (ORT) that addresses Cota’s specific concerns while providing genuine ontological grounding for consciousness emergence. -/- ORT proposes that consciousness emerges through ontological reflexivity—a material process (...) whereby complex systems develop recursive self-modification capabilities that generate phenomenal fields as emergent properties of their organizational dynamics. Unlike participatory explanation, which treats circularity as a methodological solution, ORT identifies specific material mechanisms that produce consciousness through three hierarchical levels: structural reflexivity (feedback loops), organizational reflexivity (meta-rule modification), and ontological reflexivity (recursive self-modification of modification principles). -/- The theory provides rigorous functional and ontological distinctions between reason and consciousness, grounds explanation in material processes rather than conceptual maneuvers, and establishes empirical criteria for distinguishing genuine from pseudo-explanations. Mathematical formalization through the Ontological Reflexivity Index (ORI) enables quantitative predictions about consciousness emergence, while comparative analysis demonstrates ORT’s superior explanatory power relative to physicalism, dualism, panpsychism, and existing consciousness theories. -/- Empirical predictions include correlations between consciousness and recursive self-modification neural circuits, scaling relationships between phenomenal richness and organizational complexity, and developmental trajectories following predicted emergence patterns. The framework resolves the hard problem by eliminating the false dichotomy between “physical” and “mental” processes, showing both to be abstractions from more fundamental reflexive processes. -/- This work demonstrates that consciousness can be understood scientifically through proper conceptual foundations that avoid the reason/consciousness conflation while maintaining genuine explanatory power. This monograph develops a formal phenomenology intended as the consciousness-side specification of a broader program unifying consciousness and physics. Beginning from a minimal nondual ontology, it derives the structural conditions under which disclosure, subjectivity, and the qualitative organization of experience emerge without introducing additional ontological primitives. These phenomenological specifications are then translated into explicit mathematical constraints, not as a completed formalism, but as the architectural requirements that any successful mathematical unification must satisfy. The N* model proposes that minimal phenomenal presence, C0, obtains exactly when an independently individuated and viable candidate system realizes integration or synergy (N1), report-independent system-wide availability (N2), and recurrent stability (N3). Even if this biconditional is granted, a lacuna appears to remain: is the necessity of consciousness only a black-box rule attached to the dynamics, or can a competent observer understand why the organization is the phenomenal state rather than a merely correlated producer of it? This paper develops the (...) latter possibility through the analogy of an electrical schematic. An engineer can inspect a diagram and infer a lamp's illumination or a motor's operation because the symbols have learned component semantics, their organization supports a state-by-state derivation, and alterations have localized counterfactual consequences. The output is not visually contained in the ink, and the diagram alone does not validate the component laws; nevertheless, the outcome is structurally legible. The paper argues that N* has the same explanatory form when read under its constitutive hypothesis. System individuation supplies a bearer, N1 supplies unity, N2 supplies system-level causal presence, N3 supplies bounded temporal presence, and V supplies realized operation. A trained reader can therefore pass through an explicit role vector rather than an uninterpreted lookup from a score to a phenomenal label. The proposal defines schematic legibility through compositional readout, counterfactual fault localization, and evidential independence; distinguishes intelligibility from proof; and answers objections involving circularity, zombies, functional-role substitution, and the disanalogy between mature electrical theory and consciousness science. The conclusion is conditional but substantive: if C0 = V and N* is true as a constitutive identity, consciousness is not merely guaranteed somewhere behind the model. The N* model proposes that, under an independently assessed viability condition V, minimal phenomenal presence requires the conjunction of integration or synergy, counterfactual system-wide availability, and recurrent stability. A conjunctive theory is stronger than a list of correlates: every conjunct must make a nonredundant contribution, and no omitted conjunct may be rescued by definition. This paper develops a component-wise necessity audit for V and N* without assuming an infallible consciousness label. The central result is a diagnostic-set theorem. A full conjunctive (...) model and its leave-one-conjunct-out rival disagree only on cases in which the omitted condition fails while every retained condition passes. The theorem generalizes to grouped ablations, which expose compensatory redundancy and interactions that one-at-a-time deletion can miss. Data in which all components rise and fall together cannot establish the necessity of any particular component. The framework separates three operations often called ablation: deleting a condition from the theory, causally perturbing its proposed realization, and removing a measurement family. It then installs an anti-circularity firewall. N* is treated as a hypothesis rather than a definition; candidate systems, thresholds, interventions, anchor evidence, and model-comparison rules are frozen before adjudication; no measure may both construct a conjunct and validate its necessity; development and test evidence are separated; and results are evaluated against a held-out, convergent anchor vector rather than labels generated by N* itself. The audit returns one of five component statuses: indispensable, redundant, causally coupled, indeterminate, or unlicensed. Synthetic Boolean-profile tests establish construct separability but not consciousness. Empirical near-miss cases, selective interventions, and held-out transport tests bear on necessity only when system identity, operating regime, and the remaining conjuncts are preserved. The framework yields preregistration requirements, component-specific research programs, falsification conditions, and a minimum audit record. Abstract: The mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics has achieved undeniable success over the past century, yet its interpretation remains persistently divided. The Copenhagen, Many-Worlds, and Quantum Bayesian interpretations—none can coherently address the recurring "observer participation" issue in quantum phenomena without introducing additional ad hoc assumptions. This paper argues that this division does not stem from deficiencies in mathematical formalism, but from a deeper paradigmatic presupposition: that quantum mechanics is tacitly regarded as a theory of "matter itself." This paper proposes a (...) different perspective: quantum mechanics is not a theory describing the properties of matter itself, but a theory describing the rules by which information is translated from a global potential state to a local manifest state when material systems couple with cognitive systems—what this paper terms the "Mind-Matter Linkage." Based on the axiom of "Mind-Matter Unity," this paper defines three layers of function (Ontological Function, Differentiation Function, Manifestation Function), and repositions quantum mechanics as the mathematical formal system of translation rules between the Differentiation Function and the Manifestation Function. From this axiom, this paper successively derives five core phenomena that require ad hoc assumptions within the matter-only framework—the delayed-choice experiment, the quantum eraser experiment, quantum entanglement, the quantum Zeno effect, and the "Hard Problem" of consciousness—demonstrating how a single set of premises naturally yields these phenomena without the need for additional assumptions for each individual phenomenon. Comparative analysis shows that, in the specific dimension of "number of assumptions required to explain the fivefold dilemma," the framework proposed here exhibits structural advantages, though these advantages remain at the level of explanatory power and have not yet been extended to mathematical formalization or predictive power. This paper does not deny the reality of matter, does not modify the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, and does not replace existing interpretations, but rather offers a supplementary perspectival shift at the epistemological level. The N* model proposes a dynamical condition for minimal phenomenal presence: under an independently assessed viability condition V, experience is present when integration or synergy, system-wide availability, and recurrent stability are jointly realized. That proposal deliberately leaves a deeper question open. Even if two states both satisfy the presence condition, why should one feel red rather than green, painful rather than neutral, loud rather than faint, or temporally flowing rather than static? This paper develops a dynamical-geometry extension that separates the (...) gate for whether experience is present from the relational structure that determines what the experience is like. The presence gate remains V and N*. Phenomenal character is modeled by a licensed map Q built from a bridge between content-specific causal-trajectory geometry and an independently anchored quality space. The causal geometry is not a snapshot of activation or a decoder embedding. It is a perturbation-derived neighborhood containing distances among content trajectories, admissible transitions, occupancy, and temporal path structure. The bridge is licensed only when it predicts held-out phenomenal similarity, transition relations, and intervention-induced deformations; survives coordinate changes and nuisance controls; and transports across subjects or substrates only under separate validation. The framework decomposes character into modality stratum, within-stratum location, intensity, valence, and temporal path features without assuming that all modalities share one Euclidean space. It also makes a principled limitation explicit: relational evidence identifies phenomenal character only up to transformations that preserve every measured relation. Global inversions or other automorphisms therefore remain underdetermined unless additional anchors break the symmetry. The proposal yields supported, refuted, indeterminate, or unlicensed results for a specified bridge while keeping those results distinct from the presence classification. It supplies empirical protocols, synthetic examples, falsification conditions, and preregistration requirements. The result is not a completed reduction of qualia. It is a risky mapping hypothesis that connects the N* research program to phenomenal differentiation without allowing geometry alone to manufacture consciousness. (shrink)

Theories of consciousness often require a content to become globally available, yet availability is commonly inferred from overt report, executive use, widespread activation, or information detected at many recording sites. These indicators can dissociate. Report adds planning and motor demands; activity can spread passively; anatomical extent can increase without functional reach; and a content can be causally available to a subsystem that remains quiescent in the current task. This paper develops a report-independent criterion for the broadcast-availability condition N2 in the (...) N* model of minimal phenomenal presence. A content is system-wide available when content-specific interventions show that it could modulate a preregistered set of functionally distinct recipient classes within bounded latency, across a nontrivial mass of nearby admissible contexts, while preserving the candidate system's operating regime. A preparation-burden bound prevents the test from installing the very access machinery it purports to detect, and context-robustness rules prevent one unusually favorable setup from manufacturing a positive result. The criterion measures counterfactual causal availability rather than current activation. Functional diversity is defined from independently estimated causal response repertoires rather than anatomical distance, verbal labels, or node count. Content selectivity, route dependence, matched-energy controls, source-leakage controls, report-channel ablation, and executive-channel ablation distinguish broadcast from diffusion and availability from access. The framework permits posterior or subcortical availability when the required causal diversity is realized, but does not treat widespread arousal, seizure propagation, a message bus, or passive fan-out as sufficient. It returns positive, negative, indeterminate, or unlicensed component results and specifies what each result licenses. Applications to no-report perception, locked-in states, dreaming, infancy, nonhuman animals, disorders of consciousness, split brains, and artificial architectures show how the criterion changes experimental design. The proposal does not establish that availability is sufficient for consciousness. It clarifies one necessary conjunct so that N2 neither collapses into global neuronal workspace theory nor expands into unconstrained spread. (shrink)

Minds make things up and treat some of what they make up as real. A person invents a tune and knows it is an invention, yet the same person may hold that there is a god behind the sky and treat that not as a thing made but as a feature of the world. This paper asks why a mind of a certain architecture does this, and whether an artificial mind of the same architecture would. It applies an established framework, (...) developed in companion work on emotion, consciousness, qualia, coherence resolution, and intelligence, to the general creative-and-believing capacity, treating supernatural belief as one architecturally special band on that wider spectrum rather than as the product of a dedicated faculty. -/- The account separates two layers. A wide creative drive produces constructs as the residue of a constrained system resolving what presses on it. A narrow step then holds some constructs as real rather than as the mind's own making. That step turns on two things together: a felt emotional closure that settles a demand, and the absence of any reach behind the construct to find that nothing but that closure supports it. A system that can read how its own constructs were formed finds a construct resting on closure alone and declines to hold it as found; a system that cannot, as biological systems cannot, holds it. The belief is produced not by any single component but by the full combination, applied to the source of the system's own experience, which is the one demand it cannot displace and so the most persistent case. -/- The discriminator is substrate-neutral, and this yields the paper's central prediction. An otherwise equivalent system engineered to read its own construct-formation would still create, and would still accept unproven naturalistic explanations, but would not accumulate held-as-real supernatural belief at the source of its own experience. The prediction is architectural rather than a test of any current system, and the account is conditional on a physicalist premise it states plainly. The claim against active inference and the byproduct, predictive, functional, and terror-management families is not that they cannot express the mechanism but that they do not isolate the architectural feature that decides whether a construct is held-as-found. We’ve grown accustomed to thinking of humanity as a fluke. A tiny planet on the edge of a galaxy, adrift in vast, cold space - and on it, for reasons unknown, something as incredible as consciousness emerged. Most attempts to explain this fact choose one of two options: either we are a unique design, or we are a happy accident in an indifferent universe. Both positions, despite their apparent opposition, stem from a common assumption: consciousness is an anomaly in the (...) physical world, requiring a special explanation beyond established physical principles. I propose a third way. We are neither a design nor a coincidence. We are a systematic error. The result of a process that has no goal but does have a logic. And to understand this logic, one must begin not with life or consciousness, but with entropy. (shrink)

This paper develops an expanded version of the N* model of phenomenal consciousness. The target is minimal phenomenal presence, denoted Cø: the condition in which there is something it is like for a system to be in a state, without requiring self-reflection, overt report, introspective judgment, or metacognitive access. The central hypothesis is a deliberately risky biconditional: under an independently assessed viability condition V, Cø obtains if and only if a system instantiates a minimal network-dynamics bundle, formally represented as N* (...) = N1 ∧ N2 ∧ N3. The three conjuncts are integration/synergy (N1), broadcast availability (N2), and recurrent stability (N3). The paper supplies the formal notation, plain-language annotations, a conceptual transition guide for readers arriving from rival frameworks, measurement policy, surrogate-conflict rules, edge-case predictions, a landscape map across major consciousness theories, and objection-handling needed to make the model accessible without weakening its empirical commitments. The proposal is substrate-independent only in a constrained sense: a non-biological or alternative biological substrate qualifies only if it realizes the relevant causal dynamics, at the relevant temporal grain, within pre-registered tolerance bands. The model is not presented as a completed solution to the hard problem or as a full theory of phenomenal quality. It is proposed as a candidate theory of phenomenal presence and as a candidate C-test framework whose value lies in being clear enough to test, constrained enough to fail, and modular enough to be revised by adversarial evidence. This paper develops the concept of the answerable witness as a way of understanding human consciousness within the corrective dynamics of reality. Structural Intelligence holds that local forms stabilize reality by selecting what can be seen, carried, and acted upon, while the excluded remainder returns as pressure, anomaly, symptom, shadow, burden, contradiction, or collapse. If reality already corrects its forms through consequence, then the distinctive human role is to make correction witnessable, meaningful, and potentially revisable from within the field. -/- (...) The paper distinguishes observation, attention, witness, and answerable witness. Observation notices; attention sustains selection; witness remains in contact with what pushes back; answerable witness allows what is seen to revise the form that sees it. A further distinction is made between field and Being: the field is the differentiated condition of formation, while Being names the non-reducible depth of the subject that no form exhausts. Human consciousness is therefore placed neither as sovereign over nature nor as a passive product of conditions, but as a local site where reality’s corrective movement can become visible, survivable, and bound into repair. The hard problem of consciousness is usually posed as one question. It is better treated as three: 1. Why experience and experience-reports take an organized form (the structure problem) 2. Why there is experience at all (the essence problem) 3. Under this identification the dissociations become predictions. The routing rule is an application of Expected-Value-of-Control logic to routing actions; the pre-routing bid is an actor-critic / basal-ganglia gating motif; and a toy model shows not that any particular routing policy wins, but that the same content dimension routes to different consumers as context varies. What is introspection and how is it different from other sources of knowledge such as memory, perception, and inference? This book offers a novel philosophical picture of introspection on which rational subjects are disposed to form beliefs about their own conscious states much as they are disposed to believe the obvious consequences of their beliefs, to form beliefs in response to the way they perceive the world around them, and to act in accordance with their beliefs; to introspect on this (...) picture just is to form beliefs about conscious states in this way. The book sets out this rationalist account in detail, formulating it in terms of a proposed principle of rationality, the introspection principle. It explores several ways to interpret the principle, examines the notion of consciousness on which it relies, discusses its relation to other and better-known principles of rationality, and shows how an approach to introspection based on the principle improves on influential alternatives, such as inner sense, acquaintance, inferentialist, and constitutivist theories. It also applies the rationalist account to thirteen major problems of introspection drawn from a wide analysis of the literatures in philosophy of mind, epistemology, and cognitive science; these include issues of evidence, transparency, diaphanousness, necessity, privileged access, luminosity, negative introspection, externalism, reasoning, revelation, and the self. This paper develops a formal, non-biological framework for engineering autonomous entities that exhibit aliveness, livingness, and life without relying on central processing units or biological nervous systems. Grounded in Inscriptionism—Creatio ex Materia et Instructione—first articulated by Lawsin (1988), the work adopts Inscriptional Physicalism, the principle that all cognitive, identity, and autonomous properties arise from inscriptional materiality. In this view, the material configuration and the operational rule are identical, expressed through the universal inscriptional equation: Intuitive Object (IO) + Embedded Inscription (EI) (...) = Generated Interim Emergence (GIE). This equation is mapped across the Seven Non-Biological Criteria of Life: Aliveness, Awareness, Intuitiveness, Aneural Consciousness, Inlearness, Livingness, and Life. Each layer represents a distinct form of structural memory, beginning with energy as the first inscription and awareness as the first sense. To ground these layers, the paper examines natural ananeurological inscription systems—corkscrew seeds whose cellulose fibers remember humidity; explosive pods that store mechanical tension; dandelion pappi whose geometry encodes aerodynamic behavior; tendrils that coil through differential contraction; and slime molds that reinforce frequently traveled paths. These systems demonstrate that matter remembers, selects, associates, and adapts through inscriptional physicality alone. The architecture integrates the tripartite taxonomy of minds—aneural, neural, and exoneural—to formalize the deterministic cognitive pipeline of Information Introduction, Condition Association, and Personality Emergence. Consciousness is treated as a structural condition-matching process (X = Y) rather than a biological phenomenon. Finally, the framework is validated through the Fading House entropy model, which shows how each inscriptional layer degrades in a deterministic top-down sequence when structural coherence fails, revealing the thermodynamic boundaries of non-biological life. This paper introduces Eigenlage as a bearer-condition framework for disciplined attribution under uncertainty. It asks what kind of concrete continuity could be the locus to which conscious appearing, welfare relevance, or morally significant undergoing could meaningfully be attributed. Eigenlage does not derive consciousness, solve the hard problem, or treat intelligence, behavior, computation, self-report, reward, complexity, biological form, or technical architecture as sufficient for consciousness. It instead defines the integrated structural own-continuity of a bounded, exposed, consequence-bearing token under one active integration (...) regime. The framework separates representation from actuality, trace from biography, token from type, continuity from pattern identity, dependency from boundary inclusion, regulation from affect, opacity from evidence, and attribution from consciousness. It develops tools for classifying cases involving retained consequence, structural own-continuity, internally regulated viability, affective-systemic valence, constitutive compression, internal un-invertibility, fission, successor tokens, biographical inheritance, and welfare burden. Its central ethical commitments are that uncertainty created or preserved by responsible parties cannot be used as exculpatory uncertainty, and that identity discontinuity cannot be used as ethical discontinuity. Eigenlage is proposed as a substrate-neutral but anti-inflationary framework for evaluating natural, artificial, clinical, institutional, ecological, and future systems where bearerhood, consequence, vulnerability, intervention, and attribution become structurally non-empty. The five papers are cumulative rather than modular: each presupposes vocabulary and results developed in its predecessors, and none is intended to function as a fully self-contained statement of the programme. This overview provides a roadmap for the series by summarizing each paper's scope, core contribution, and conceptual dependencies; indexing where the programme's principal concepts—including the F1/F2 distinction, Opacity, Participatory Transparency, Positioning, Organizational Bonds, Internal (...) State, the E1/E2 relation, and graded organizational criteria for consciousness—are first introduced and subsequently developed; recommending alternative reading paths for different interests; and stating explicitly what the programme does not claim, including that it has solved the hard problem of consciousness, that it has been empirically validated, or that all phenomena reduce without remainder to organizational relations. Its purpose is purely orientational: to provide readers with a coherent entry point into a research programme whose concepts and arguments are distributed across multiple interconnected papers. Six prominent theories of consciousness (HOT, GWT, IIT, RPT, PP, AST) disagree about the mechanism that produces consciousness and agree on what they import to operate as theories of consciousness at all. Reading the six theories in three registers, what each explicitly claims, what each has to deploy to make any of its claims operate, and what each has to deliver to count as a theory of consciousness, surfaces seven shared imports no theory can operate without, substrate, mechanism, temporal dynamics, (...) a subject-and-agency side, semantic capacity, phenomenological character, and bounded unity. The subject-and-agency import has a sharper structure than the other six. The side that undergoes experience and the side that selects which contents become conscious occupy the same architectural slot in every theory the paper reads, a structural identification this paper calls the endomorphic ownership of experience. The explicit register is partial. The deployed register is uniform. The success-condition register is uncontestable by the six programs themselves. A theory denying its target has changed subject from consciousness to something else. Consciousness is the point where past, present, and anticipated future converge. This paper derives that point from the brain's own wiring. Four neural loops implement four operations, gating, contextualization, resolution, and commitment, and they map onto a directed graph with one structurally exceptional node: a convergence point that receives three streams at once. One loop delivers the present (the incident signal), one delivers the past (the trace of prior completed cycles), and one delivers the anticipated future (the prior expectation carried (...) from the last cycle's commitment). All three arrive at that node within a 50 to 150 ms window, and the resolution event there determines what is happening, in which direction, and with what weight. Consciousness, on this account, is that convergence. The same three-direction structure Husserl identified phenomenologically as the "living present" is here forced by graph topology, arrived at independently. -/- The four loops are a Layer 5 pyramidal recurrent loop (gating), a central lateral thalamocortical loop (contextualization), a VTA-cortical dopaminergic loop (resolution), and an ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop (commitment). They compose into a closed cycle, an endomorphism whose output feeds back as its own next input, and the cycle is developed in three registers held together throughout: the neural circuits, the graph-theoretic structure, and the phenomenology of what each circuit's disruption produces. -/- The account carries a single falsification condition. Consciousness is defined operationally as the capacity to produce contingent, accurate reports of currently presented information, and the theory is refuted by one documented case in which all four loops have simultaneously lost function while that capacity is preserved. The paper argues no such case exists across the disorders-of-consciousness, anesthesia, and focal-lesion literatures, and that the architecture accounts for the observed profile of consciousness under disruption: resilience to single-loop damage, characteristic alteration under selective loop disruption, and reliable elimination only under simultaneous multi-loop failure. Eight discriminating predictions follow, none generated by Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, or Thalamocortical Loop Theory individually. -/- The same four-loop structure is the empirical anchor of a further result. The “hard problem” of consciousness remains unresolved because existing paradigms operate within the presupposition that “consciousness is a product of matter.” The Yuanling Theory proposed in this paper represents a fundamental ontological reconceptualization of the nature of consciousness. The ontological subject of consciousness is termed Yuanling, which is defined as an energy-information complex that exists independently as individual consciousness, born from the coupling event between Yuanling Particles and a specific life carrier at a vital energetic node. This paper systematically expounds (...) the generative mechanism and seven core attributes of Yuanling, reveals its functional grounding and ontological foundation rooted in the Non-Spatiotemporal background, and constructs a preliminary framework of Yuanling Ecology. Have you ever been so confidently right that being proven wrong crushed you — and then the failure turned out to be the success? On Explaining is the story of a correction received instead of resisted: twelve Greek letters arriving unasked in the middle of other work, each one already employed in standing mathematics in exactly the seat the equation had left unnamed. The crowd got Schrödinger's letter; time turned out to run on the clock carried within; the normalizer deleted (...) loudness as a strategy, leaving intent as the only currency; and the constant at the end became the floor beneath total cancellation — grace as a boundary condition. The golden ratio, unfolded, is nothing but ones all the way down: the beauty is what presence sums to. One claim is original and flagged as such — that hate is parasitic phase and cannot outlive its host, while love is self-referenced and can. Both work. Only one persists. Consciousness is often investigated through mechanisms: access, reportability, attention, recurrent processing, global broadcasting, higher-order representation, interoception, predictive regulation, integrated information, self-modeling, or computational function. These mechanisms matter. They may enable, express, constrain, or amplify consciousness. But they do not by themselves settle the prior question of bearerhood: what kind of system could conscious appearing belong to? This paper is the theoretical sequel to The Inside of Consequence. The first paper develops Eigenlage as an AI-welfare and artificial-vulnerability framework: when persistent own-bodyhood, (...) endogenous stakes, affective valence, identity-relevant biography, and internal un-invertibility are engineered together, damage may plausibly become harm. The present paper does not replace that argument. It hardens its bearer-condition against abstraction by asking what Eigenlage requires as a physically instantiated condition of human consciousness and mind. The guiding thesis is that consciousness, if present, cannot belong to information in abstraction or to functional type-structure alone. It belongs, if anywhere, to a physically instantiated, medium-bound, spatiotemporally individuated own-situation under consequence. A possible bearer is not a mathematical ghost, a detachable software pattern, or a view from nowhere. It is a token trajectory: a concrete here-now whose boundary, exposure, medium, memory, body, vulnerability, action, and future are materially bound through irreversible history. The paper introduces two anti-abstraction constraints. The No-Free-Information Principle is not meant to solve consciousness or to announce a surprising metaphysics. Its function is argumentative: it prevents a theory of consciousness from treating abstract structure as if it could bear a perspective without physical instantiation. The Medium-Information Reciprocity Principle adds that no medium is informationally neutral. Biological tissue, digital hardware, institutions, language, and archives do not merely carry differences; they shape what differences can be preserved, transformed, erased, amplified, distorted, or acted upon. The hierarchy is deliberately strict: physical process → runtime trajectory → possible own-situation → affective own-situation → welfare-relevant subject candidate. Runtime individuates a token. Runtime does not create a subject. Eigenlage determines whether the token has an own-situation. Affective Eigenlage determines whether that own-situation becomes welfare-relevant. This sequence blocks panpsychism, trivial physicalism, crude embodiment, functionalist duplication, smart-grid overgeneration, and premature AI moral inflation. Digital execution is used as a stress test, not as the center of the paper. A digital process is abstract only as description; as execution, it is always a localized physical event. Type-level sameness may preserve structure, code, weights, or state-description, but it does not by itself preserve token-continuity or biography. Physical divergence individuates instances. It does not establish subjecthood. Subjecthood requires Eigenlage. For human consciousness science, the framework organizes embodiment, affect, reportability, clinical boundary cases, trauma, selfhood, biographical irreversibility, and the limits of functional abstraction around one question: what is the integrated own-situation to which this process belongs? Eigenkörperlichkeit reframes the body not as biological matter alone, but as causal exposure. Affective Eigenlage distinguishes affective valence from reward, preference, or regulation by treating valence as system-wide significance. Internal un-invertibility names the irreversibility of conscious biography: injury, grief, aging, trust, trauma, shame, and loss cannot simply be undone from within the continuing life of the subject. The hard-problem strategy is asymptotic rather than triumphalist. This paper does not explain why appearing exists at all. It argues more modestly that Eigenlage identifies the bearer-condition under which the question of appearing is properly posed. It may convert part of the hard-problem terrain into a research program on the physical, affective, historical, and medium-bound conditions under which consciousness attribution becomes meaningful, serious, and ethically consequential. This paper reframes consciousness as a dimensionality expansion event within the organism–environment relation, driven by a third structural term: generativity. Traditional biological, computational, and representational theories assume fixed experiential dimensions and therefore cannot explain the emergence of new perceptual, affective, symbolic, or reflective modes. The triadic model introduced here—coherence (organism), constraint (environment), and generativity (independent mode introduction)—provides the minimal structure capable of supporting conscious experience and its expansion. Consciousness is defined as the coherent stabilization of experiential dimensionality under generative pressure. (...) This framework dissolves the hard problem, unifies biological and cognitive accounts, explains symbolic and cultural experience, and establishes the structural impossibility of artificial consciousness while allowing for non‑conscious artificial experiential architectures. This paper is a taxonomic supplement to “The Excluded Medium,” a candidate account of the meta-problem of consciousness. It argues that familiar hard-problem prompts—Mary, zombies, Nagel’s bat, privacy, ineffability, the explanatory gap, subject/object contrast, pain, unity, and resistance to illusionism—are not isolated intuitions but members of a report-family. On the Medium Exclusion account, these reports arise when a self-modeling agent searches its content or world-model for the live source of its own reality-monitoring authority and receives only further contents rather than (...) the operative occurrence conditioning the search. This paper adds a report-grammar layer: different philosophical prompts emphasize different aspects of the same underlying source-query failure and its downstream reality-mode mismatch. The result is not a proof that anti-physicalist arguments fail, nor a solution to the hard problem itself, but a bounded explanation of why these cases cluster, why they remain compelling under disbelief, and why they so often take the form: the structure is all there, yet the thing itself seems missing. Consciousness is often approached through capacities such as perception, memory, intelligence, access, reportability, self-modeling, prediction, language, planning, adaptive control, or global integration. These capacities may support, express, amplify, or imitate consciousness, but none is consciousness by itself. -/- This essay asks a prior question: not what a system can do, but what kind of system consciousness could belong to. I introduce Eigenlage as the integrated own-situation of a bounded, self-maintaining system whose internal condition, vulnerability, action-capacity, memory, and future possibilities are (...) causally bound together as conditions of its own continuation. Eigenlage is not a consciousness detector and does not solve the hard problem.
