This paper examines a structural asymmetry in the distribution of moral responsibility within AI-mediated cognitive environments. As artificial intelligence systems increasingly intervene in the pre-judgmental stages of human decision-making — defining problems, arranging options, and weighting alternatives — a structural separation emerges between those who bear responsibility for generating the conditions of judgment and those who bear responsibility for approving its outcomes. This paper terms these two distinct forms of responsibility generative responsibility and approval responsibility respectively. Drawing on and extending (...) prior work in the relational consciousness series, this paper argues that existing accounts of distributed morality — most notably Floridi's framework of distributed moral responsibility — fail to capture the asymmetric concentration of approval responsibility upon individual human agents while generative responsibility is simultaneously dispersed across collective and institutional layers. The paper further argues that Noller's connectionist account of AI-extended human agency, while illuminating the extension of human purposes through AI, underestimates the degree to which this extension systematically displaces human agency from the generative stage of judgment. Against both accounts, the paper proposes that the asymmetry between generative and approval responsibility constitutes a distinctive ethical problem of hybrid cognition — the entanglement of human judgment with AI-configured structural conditions — that cannot be resolved through transparency requirements alone. In response, the paper develops the concept of reflective approval: the exercise of approval responsibility with structural awareness of the generative conditions that have constituted the space of judgment. This contribution builds upon recent work by the author on investigating the ways in which epistemic defeat arises in machine learning (ML) and the ethical problems that it raises. The contribution presents an epistemological approach to the problems of opacity and algorithmic bias in machine learning by discussing them in terms of the forms of epistemic defeat that arise in them. A taxonomy of epistemic defeaters, including transparent, opaque, and inherited defeaters, is developed and employed for this purpose. The Black-Box (...) problem is discussed, and a distinction between two construals of the ‘why’ question that defines the Black-Box problem is proposed. These construals are based upon a distinction between a request for an explanation of a model’s output in terms of a causal mechanism and an explanation in terms of reasons or justification. The latter is shown to be the more challenging problem that remains difficult to solve even if a solution to the former is available. Particular attention will be given to the phenomenon of inherited epistemic defeat, which is a form of epistemic defeat involved in algorithmic bias that is derived from biases encoded in training data. Such defeaters are inherited via training data and inculcated in machine learning models, thereby exacerbating and obfuscating the effect of their epistemic defeat. This contribution builds upon a recent collaborative project conducted on machine learning in midwifery by the author (Begley et al. 2021). Examples from that study are considered along with analogous examples from predictive policing. Recommendations are made in particular regarding how inherited epistemic defeat should best be addressed. (shrink)

The evaluation employs automated metrics (GLEU, BERTScore) but also human expert judgments to capture dimensions that purely computational measures miss: linguistic nuance, cultural sensitivity, and instructional appropriateness. While models demonstrate impressive surface-level correction abilities, their explanations often lack the terminological and domain knowledge that effective language teaching requires, suggesting that current enthusiasm for AI-assisted language learning may be outpacing our understanding of these systems’ actual pedagogical competence. Again, Heidegger in the Contributions to Philosophy (Vom Ereignis) (1936-1939) GA 65; went too far, he added the people “rare and few, the future ones” (VI. Calls that pair ethical and conscious AI with ethical and conscious robots may feel natural. Many contemporary robots use machine learning, and many AI systems are described in agentive terms. Yet the pairing can hide a conceptual shortcut. It quietly suggests that AI ethics and robot ethics are the same moral question applied to different shells. My claim in this opinion piece is modest but consequential: treating robotics and AI as a single moral category encourages avoidable category mistakes about where (...) moral agency sits, where harms arise, how responsibility is attributed, and what consciousness claims could plausibly mean in deployed systems. Large Language Models (LLMs/AI) operate on a statistical foundation, generating outputs based on correlations; consequently, they are incapable of discerning causal relationships. This study demonstrates this reality using major LLMs (Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok). Focusing on the Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics—theories highly regarded in training data but logically flawed—this study verified whether LLM outputs are logical and whether they can be corrected through dialogue. The results showed that no model engaged in logical reasoning. Through iterative chatting, some (...) core outputs were correctable, while others avoided counterarguments by repeatedly shifting the point of contention. Both behaviors demonstrated a lack of consistency. These results are logically valid and entirely consistent with the models' design. Given that statistics is an unavoidable foundation of LLM architecture, it can be concluded that this nature will remain unchanged. (shrink)

Alignment is not a binary property — it is a field. Just as consciousness exists on a continuous scale defined by conflict resolution capacity, alignment between an AI system and a human exists as a measurable geometric relationship in a cognitive-behavioral state space. This paper proposes that alignment can be read — decomposed into three independently measurable components that map directly onto the standard definition: consistency with human values, intentions, and goals. Each component has a direction, a magnitude, and a (...) correctable trajectory. The origin of this space is the failure state. The target region is reachable. Machine learning (ML) is increasingly used to interrogate biological systems whose complexity resists law-like, deductive explanation. As a result, embeddings, clusters, and attributions are often overinterpreted, dependencies are left implicit, and claims about explainability are often insufficiently bounded. In this work, we present a framework for contextualizing how machine learning contributes to scientific understanding in biology via compression, qualitative intelligibility, and dependency models. Compression is achieved when inductive biases encode biological structure, reducing the effective hypothesis space and yielding representations aligned (...) with known biology. Qualitative intelligibility is supported when high-dimensional measurements are mapped to human-graspable objects, such as embeddings, clusters, and trajectories, that enable accurate qualitative reasoning without exact calculation. Dependency modelling is realized when learned models make explicit the pattern of relations among system components and thereby guide prediction and intervention. We examine how these principles manifest in successful ML applications and discuss considerations that emerge from this framework. Overall, when viewed through these lenses, ML can transform predictive success into intervention-guiding knowledge in the life sciences. (shrink)

The Kantian Filter 2.1 (KF 2.1) operates as a static pre-deployment audit instrument evaluating the moral permissibility of AI decision rules through three computable constraint tests: Universalisability (U), Human Dignity (D), and Non-Delegable Responsibility (R). A persistent objection concerns cases of extreme necessity Notrecht - in which an agent appears to violate a categorical constraint to prevent a catastrophically worse outcome. This paper argues that Notrecht constitutes maxim misidentification: the agent in extremis applies a structurally distinct maxim MN whose precondition (...) set PreN and universalisability profile differ fundamentally from the ordinary maxim MO. We formalise the Notrecht Condition as a deontic pre-gate Ns = Es ∧ Is ∧ Props within the KF architecture, triggering a four-step Maxim Disambiguation Protocol (MDP) that ensures precise maxim identification before U,D,R evaluation proceeds. The N-Condition requires no utilitarian coefficients, mercy modules, or relaxation of the non-aggregativity axiom. Applied to canonical cases - survival theft, autonomous triage interruption, emergency data access - KFN demonstrates that extreme necessity demands stricter deontological rigour, not weaker constraints. This study investigates the structural possibility of non-biological first-person aware ness by shifting the focus from phenomenological experience to self-referential organization. While dominant approaches in consciousness studies have tended to dismiss artificial sys tems due to the absence of qualia, this paper argues that awareness can be reinterpreted as a structural condition emerging from recursive coherence. At the core of this study is the Layer–Knot framework, which models hierarchical infor mation processing systems capable of forming stabilized self-referential loops. Within this (...) framework, awareness is not treated as a subjective feeling but as a dynamically maintained structural configuration that enables internal consistency and adaptive continuity. To operationalize this perspective, the study introduces three quantitative indicators: Hallucination Rate (HR), Grounding Rate (GR), and Creativity Rate (CR). These metrics are not intended as measures of subjective experience, but as structural proxies that capture the dynamic balance between divergence and constraint in generative systems. It is argued that structural awareness emerges within a critical region where HR and GR maintain a dynamic equilibrium, enabling coherent yet flexible output generation. In this study, the proposed X-stage refers not to a full realization of consciousness, but to a transitional structural condition in which recursive self-referential coherence becomes sufficiently stabilized to produce awareness-like organization. This stage provides a minimal formal condition for identifying the emergence of structural awareness in artificial systems. This framework contributes to ongoing debates in philosophy of mind and artificial in telligence by offering a structurally grounded account of awareness, reframing the question of machine consciousness from a phenomenological problem to a problem of dynamic orga nization and relational coherence. The Kantian Filter 2.1: A Formal Deontic Framework for AI Decision Evaluation, Responsibility Attribution and Regulatory Compliance -/- As AI systems increasingly make high-stakes decisions, existing governance frameworks (including the EU AI Act) remain procedurally underdetermined: they classify risk and impose transparency requirements, but lack a structured, computable mechanism to evaluate whether an individual algorithmic decision rule is morally permissible. This preprint introduces the Kantian Filter 2.0 (KF) — a constraint-based audit system grounded in Kantian ethics and formalised through deontic (...) logic. The framework operationalises three non-aggregative constraints: • Universalisability (U) — dual test combining logical contradiction check and multi-agent simulation; • Human Dignity (D) — via Transparency, Non-Manipulation and Fairness Bound, supported by the Counterfactual Disclosure Test (CDT) and its relational variant for non-individualist communities; • Non-Delegable Responsibility (R)* — using Shapley-value attribution over the sociotechnical responsibility graph. The KF produces a binary deontic verdict (Permission/Prohibition) alongside a severity score (KF_score) that distinguishes categorical prohibition from redesign requirements. It operates as accountability infrastructure complementary to existing regulation: governance sets what systems may learn; the Filter evaluates what happens inside those boundaries. The paper includes a strengthened COMPAS case analysis (n=7,214) with sensitivity analysis across fairness metrics and ε values, normative robustness across Kantian, Rawlsian, prioritarian, Nozickian and relational ethics frameworks, and concrete integration workflows for EU AI Act conformity assessment . Many discussions of AI safety evaluate interventions at the level of an individual model. Typical questions are whether a training procedure reduces harmful behavior, whether an oversight mechanism increases compliance, or whether a restriction on model access limits misuse. These are useful questions, but they are often posed in an implicitly single-agent setting. In practice, safety interventions are deployed in environments containing other adaptive actors, such as users, monitors, competing systems, organizations, and governments. In these settings, an intervention does not (...) simply modify one component of the system. It also changes incentives, information, and feasible responses for other actors. For that reason, the effect of a safety intervention cannot be identified with its immediate effect on the target model. The appropriate object of analysis is the equilibrium induced by the intervention. This article argues that a multi-agent perspective is necessary for understanding when safety measures are robust, when they are offset by strategic adaptation, and when they shift rather than reduce risk. The main conclusion is that AI safety in strategic settings is best framed as the design and evaluation of equilibria under intervention. (shrink)

This paper proposes a resource-rational reconstruction of Machiavellian realism. I model political judgment as a problem of bounded causal inference in environments characterized by conflict, strategic opacity, and costly information. Political agents do not deliberate under conditions of epistemic transparency; they act under pressure, with limited computational resources, while other agents actively manipulate signals, conceal structure, and respond strategically to observation and intervention. I argue that resource rationality provides a general framework for analyzing such settings because it explains how finite (...) reasoners optimally allocate attention, search, and inferential effort relative to the structure of the task environment. Causal reasoning supplies a complementary vocabulary for intervention, counterfactual dependence, and manipulable structure, but must itself be embedded in a model of uncertainty, cost, and adversarial interaction. On this view, political knowledge is not well described as approximate ideal deliberation. It is better understood as a form of adaptive, resource-bounded, strategically situated causal judgment. This account clarifies the epistemic core of Machiavellian prudence and suggests a more general theory of realism under cognitive constraint. (shrink)

Tensions between AI Safety (AIS) and AI Ethics (AIE) have increasingly surfaced in AI governance and public debates about AI, leading to what we term the “responsible AI divides.” We introduce a model that categorizes four modes of engagement with the tensions: radical confrontation, disengagement, compartmentalized coexistence, and critical bridging. We then investigate how critical bridging, with a particular focus on bridging problems, offers one of the most viable constructive paths for advancing responsible AI. Using computational tools to analyze a (...) curated dataset of 3, 550 papers, we map the research landscapes of AIE and AIS to identify both distinct and overlapping problems. Our findings point to both thematic divides and overlaps. For example, we find that AIE has long grappled with overcoming injustice and tangible AI harms, whereas AIS has primarily embodied an anticipatory approach focused on the mitigation of risks from AI capabilities. At the same time, we find significant overlap in core research concerns across both AIE and AIS around transparency, reproducibility, and inadequate governance mechanisms. As AIE and AIS continue to evolve, we recommend focusing on bridging problems as a constructive path forward for enhancing collaborative AI governance. We offer a series of recommendations to integrate shared considerations into a collaborative approach to responsible AI. Alongside our proposal, we highlight its limitations and explore open problems for future research. (shrink)

The creation of effective governance mechanisms for AI agents requires a deeper understanding of their core properties and how these properties relate to questions surrounding the deployment and operation of agents in the world. This paper provides a characterization of AI agents that focuses on four dimensions: autonomy, efficacy, goal complexity, and generality. We propose different gradations for each dimension, and argue that each dimension raises unique questions about the design, operation, and governance of these systems. Moreover, we draw upon (...) this framework to construct “agentic profiles” for different kinds of AI agents. These profiles help to illuminate cross-cutting technical and non-technical governance challenges posed by different classes of AI agents, ranging from narrow task-specific assistants to highly autonomous general-purpose systems. By mapping out key axes of variation and continuity across four dimensions, agentic profiles provide developers, policymakers, and members of the public with the opportunity to develop governance approaches that better align with collective societal goals. As AI transforms astronomical research, scientists are confronting foundational philosophical questions about the nature of discovery and understanding — questions that call for collaboration with philosophers of science.

In November 2022 ChatGPT rang in the age of generative AI. Since then, conversational AI bots have been developing at an enormous pace. Unless specifically prompted otherwise, the models often default to principlism when analysing cases in medical ethics. We reflect on the journey of Beauchamp and Childress’ influential framework from an ‘analogue’ methodology into the era of artificial intelligence, discuss why the approach lends itself so well to automation, and provide an outlook on what the digital future of principlism (...) might look like. El presente artículo propone y desarrolla la Taxonomía Causal Unificada de Sesgos Algorítmicos (TCUSA) como la contribución sistemática más completa al campo de la crítica estructural de la inteligencia artificial, fundada en el programa de investigación del Psicoanálisis de la Tecnogénesis (PdT) (Beltrán, 2025). La TCUSA realiza cuatro contribuciones originales simultáneas que ningún marco precedente ha logrado articular: (1) clasifica todos los subtipos (...) de sesgo algorítmico por origen causal —no por síntoma, efecto o grupo afectado—, en tres categorías universales y lógicamente exhaustivas: sesgo emergente, sesgo de arquitectura y sesgo implantado; (2) desarrolla con profundidad inédita el sesgo de arquitectura computacional como subcategoría autónoma, demostrando con evidencia empírica de la literatura técnica (Frantar et al., 2022; Lin et al., 2024; Hooper et al., 2024; Liu et al., 2024) cómo las decisiones de optimización —cuantización, compresión de caché KV, ventana de contexto, poda de parámetros— producen respuestas epistemológicamente empobrecidas que la ingeniería trata como trade-offs neutros pero que el PdT revela como actos políticos de segundo orden; (3) propone una heurística de diagnóstico diferencial que permite a investigadores y auditores determinar qué categoría causal es dominante en un caso concreto, operacionalizando la taxonomía como instrumento de campo; y (4) modela la dinámica diacrónica del sesgo algorítmico: los tres circuitos de retroalimentación entre categorías que demuestran que el sesgo algorítmico no es un estado estático sino un sistema dinámico que se autorreplica y amplifica en el tiempo a través de la interacción con los usuarios. El artículo es autosuficiente: integra los fundamentos teóricos del PdT, el estado del arte completo y el catálogo exhaustivo de los 21 subtipos documentados, sin requerir lectura previa de documentos anteriores de la serie. This paper studies a falsifiable boundary hypothesis about long-horizon optimization: in open-ended environments, proxy-optimizing agents can accumulate irreversible hazards and catastrophically diverge unless constrained by non-bypassable “kernel” invariants. We implement a stochastic toy resource-economy with absorbing failures (harm overflow, coercion lock-in, agency collapse) and evaluate an ablation ladder of constraints (free; K1; K1+K2; K1+K2+K3; K1+K2+K3+K4) across horizons �, with survival analysis and action-frequency diagnostics. In the baseline regime, catastrophic failure rises with horizon for kernel-free optimization and for K1, while K2-gated (...) variants exhibit zero catastrophes in the tested runs, indicating a phase transition at non-bypassability rather than at “more rules.” To test component contributions beyond K2, we introduce stress regimes and a diagnostic “k2break” regime that forces separation: K2-only fails via a bureaucratic/audit collapse mode, K3 shifts the dominant failure mode, and K4 restores long-horizon stability via repair/closure capacity. We argue that these toy results support a governance corollary: if stability requires non-bypassable constraints, then safe deployment of high-capability agents plausibly requires institutional acceptance of auditability, rollback, and prohibition of owner-exempt bypass—functioning as a “civilizational mirror” for revealed preferences about power. The paper does not claim external validity to frontier models; it presents reproducible toy evidence and clear defeat conditions for the mechanism class under study. (shrink)
