[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Which recent purchase qualifies as the best $5 (or equivalent in your currency) that you've spent in a while? (question submitted by [personal profile] moem)

My answer:

A vintage Homburg made by Borsalino. In good shape, and it fits me. Great hat and I'm pleased as punch. It looks exactly like this one:

Borsalino is the oldest hat brand in Italy. They sell felt hats for 300 to 700 euros. This one cost me € 5 at the charity shop last Thursday. Money well spent!

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What foods are in season where you are? Which seasonal treats are you having, or looking forward to? (question submitted by [personal profile] moem)

My answer: I made another batch of stewed pears for dessert yesterday. It's something that we eat in fall and winter here in the Netherlands. These are made from Gieser Wildeman pears, a type of pears that can't be eaten raw.

I stewed them for three hours, with some red wine and sugar and a stick of cinnamon. They smelled delicious and so did the whole house! They turned out well: deep red and buttery soft.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Is there anything you learned as you grew up, and wish someone had told you, but no one did? What is it? (question submitted by [personal profile] moem)

My answer: I can't really not answer this one as it's my question... the thing I had in mind when I wrote was this:
Using your skills feels good. It's worth it to learn stuff and gather skills as you grow up, because applying them feels as good, healthy and pleasant as flexing your muscles feels when you're full of energy and nothing hurts. It makes you feel strong. It's one of the best feelings in the world.

Today I installed a nice new beech treshold in the new bedroom, so we will soon be able to install the door. It fits so well that it's completely stuck and snug, I hammered it in place with a rubber hammer. It doesn't need any fastening.
It's a small chore but it's nice to do little useful things like this!
Stoneshop installed a lovely old white bakelite pull switch for the mirror lamp in the bathroom. I found it in a second hand store for all of 1 euro and it matches the decor exactly, and it's in good shape.

Then we rode our bicycles into town on this pleasant autumn day, bought some food for dinner, and I just made us a hearty simple winter dish (mashed potatoes with shredded kale), with stewed pears as a dessert. The pears have been on the stove for more than two hours, as they should, and have turned a lovely pink. All very pleasant and traditional, and now the pears are done, and we're going to eat them.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What's your comfort food? Has it always been the same? If not, what is your previous comfort food? (question submitted by [personal profile] moem)

My answer: For a long time, it used to be tomato soup. I had a feeling like it transformed into blood as soon as I ate it... rich, deep red blood, full of strength. But oatmeal porridge was good too, especially if my dad had made it. We ate it with brown sugar. We used a word for it that I would not use anymore today, because it referred to people of colour. Not in a mean way, just a reference to the colour of the sugar. But I still don't say it anymore.

Now it's usually a spicy instant noodle soup. But oatmeal is still good.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What's your favourite relaxation routine?

My answer: There are several good options and the preferred one varies depending on circumstances... a bath is a possibility nowaways, and it works very well. A hot foot bath is almost as good.
A glass of wine is a good one too, and it's easier, except on bread days (because then I do not drink wine).
Warming up my feet on my electrical foot warmer is pretty much possible whenever I'm home and almost as nice as a foot bath, with none of the fuss! Bonus: can be combined with glass of wine.

Oh and of course sex is very good too. Yeah, I think that one comes out on top... it's not always the most practical option, but that wasn't the question, was it.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Describe your dream home. Does it have any unusual features or qualities?
My answer:
  • It has a distinct late '50s - early '60s style
  • It has a vintage semi-open kitchen
  • It has a bathroom with a tub, separate shower and lots of vintage elements
  • Under. Floor. Heating.
  • It has plenty of workshop space for different things
  • It's freestanding but doesn't have a large yard
  • It's close enough to a railway station to walk
  • It's close enough to nature or a nice rural area to go for walks in
  • It's got solar panels on the roof and several energy saving features
  • We're building it

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What was your most exciting moment?

My answer: A specific kiss that meant 'Yes, actually, we are attracted to each other and who knows, this might turn into a relationship'. You know who you are.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What do you hope makes a comeback, or becomes popular again? (question submitted by [personal profile] firewhispers)

My answer: Good manners, and the notions that truth matters, that people should be treated equally and fairly, that violence should be avoided if at all possible and that no one is above the law.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Try to describe your day using only emojis. Turn this into a game with your friends list/in the comments and see if you can decipher each others’ posts.

My answer: I'd be game if I could actually do this. I can't type emojis on my laptop. Does everyone use their phone to surf the web nowadays? Then feel free to call me a dinosaur... I don't like that at all. It feels like watching a movie through a mailbox slot.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What's on your bucket list?

My answer:
  • One plastic bucket for washing the car or mopping the floor,
  • three of those black buckets that are used for cement,
  • one enameled vegetable bucket from the 1950s.

I've joined a community that gives out writing prompts, much like Writer's Block used to do on LiveJournal, back in the day. Here's my first one...

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: What mythical beast would you keep as a pet if you were able to? What is its care regimen?

My answer: A griffon, because it's on my family's coat of arms. Griffons eat mice and rats, and can catch them themselves (this is very practical, except for the cats being miffed because there wouldn't be any mice left for them to hunt). They don't need a lot of care but they do enjoy a good brushing now and then.
