I do love me some Sentinel/Guide fic. One of the things that I never see enough of is the way a Sentinel's senses come into play.
The smell of something sizzling in a pan
The warmth coming off a lightbulb
The pop of a jar being opened
Ice dropping into a glass
The taste of strawberries
The color of butterfly wings
Water cascading down over naked skin (I'm just going to dwell on that for a few minutes)
So, got any sensual experiences you'd care to add to this list?
(fanfic or otherwise)

Date: 2026-06-10 09:56 pm (UTC)I can hear if a computer is on from a room or two away. What is "ultrasonic" to most humans is noisy to me. I can hear bats clicking and squeaking as they echolocate, if they're close enough. I can hear most owls fly, although a barn owl gliding a foot above my head was eerily silent to me.
I can smell if milk is starting to spoil long before anyone else can. I love the smell of rain, petrichor. I can track food smells to a restaurant a block or so away.
I can see more colors than most people, and remember them well enough to match things at home when I am shopping. I can see a bit into the ultraviolet -- cobalt glass looks different to me than other blue glass.
I can taste the difference between fancy salts. I really like the pink ones. I can taste the difference between $3 olive oil and $13 olive oil, but not $30 olive oil, so I usually get the midgrade stuff.
I'm fascinated by textures. I adore the modern microfiber and some fake furs. I love the blankets that are woolly on one side and shaggy-fuzzy on the other. I can detect tiny variations in texture with my lips and tongue; apparently that's really weird and most humans have their most discerning touch on their fingertips.
And I use that in stories, sometimes, if a character has keener senses than average. Very useful.

...the metal taste of blood filling a mouth
