senses

I do love me some Sentinel/Guide fic. One of the things that I never see enough of is the way a Sentinel's senses come into play.

The smell of something sizzling in a pan

The warmth coming off a lightbulb

The pop of a jar being opened

Ice dropping into a glass

The taste of strawberries

The color of butterfly wings

Water cascading down over naked skin (I'm just going to dwell on that for a few minutes)

So, got any sensual experiences you'd care to add to this list?

(fanfic or otherwise)

Yes ...

It's my favorite part of Sentinel fic too, partly because my senses are above average.

I can hear if a computer is on from a room or two away. What is "ultrasonic" to most humans is noisy to me. I can hear bats clicking and squeaking as they echolocate, if they're close enough. I can hear most owls fly, although a barn owl gliding a foot above my head was eerily silent to me.

I can smell if milk is starting to spoil long before anyone else can. I love the smell of rain, petrichor. I can track food smells to a restaurant a block or so away.

I can see more colors than most people, and remember them well enough to match things at home when I am shopping. I can see a bit into the ultraviolet -- cobalt glass looks different to me than other blue glass.

I can taste the difference between fancy salts. I really like the pink ones. I can taste the difference between $3 olive oil and $13 olive oil, but not $30 olive oil, so I usually get the midgrade stuff.

I'm fascinated by textures. I adore the modern microfiber and some fake furs. I love the blankets that are woolly on one side and shaggy-fuzzy on the other. I can detect tiny variations in texture with my lips and tongue; apparently that's really weird and most humans have their most discerning touch on their fingertips.

And I use that in stories, sometimes, if a character has keener senses than average. Very useful.

There are many downsides, and it's exactly what you see in Sentinel fic: allergies to things, especially synthetic things although I'm also allergic to wool, loud or high sounds like sirens being painful, most people's idea of perfume reeks to me, my spice-heat tolerance is low (except oddly for ginger, which I can eat candied or raw), tinted glass like sunglasses is disorienting, and so on. But I wouldn't trade my senses for the world, they're just too useful. I can deal with the drawbacks, and hell, it's not like I can hide being a freak of all sorts.

I only test milk for people who are nice to me though. Pick on me and you can test your own fucking milk.

It's an issue that comes up in my Polychrome Heroics writing a lot. Some people like folks with superpowers, others really do not. There's a tendency in some crowds to treat a super-intellect like a vending machine, which is very irritating.

Even here, I've seen T-shirts with "Yes, I am a computer engineer. No, I won't fix your computer."

The smell of fresh baked bread.

The feel of traffic in the soles of your feet as vehicles pass by.

The sound of children playing.

The color of awakening life in the spring.

I think I've written mostly H/C sentinel 'verse where the Guide is helping a whumped up Sentinel who's had sensory overload, so...

...the cacaphonous clatter of dishes, cups, and cutlery at a cafe

...the suffocating weight and sting of smoke from a house fire

...the burn of blade or needle piercing skin (maybe stitches or a tattoo, going in over and over)

...the metal taste of blood filling a mouth
