Challenge 15

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment to this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This went fast, lol.

In one of the earlier challenges one of my goals was to comment more. I tend to leave kudos a lot when I read fics on AO3, but I don't always comment. Sometimes I really don't know what to say, even when I've enjoyed a story. I'll start to write a comment, think it sounds trite or stupid, and erase it, and then go away and not leave the comment. And the thing is, I know in my head that the author probably wouldn't think it's trite or stupid, and would be glad to receive the comment.

So, my challenge to myself is that going forward, every time I read a new fic, I leave some kind of comment, even if it's just something simple like 'Nice job!' And every time I re-read a fic I've already read, I leave a comment, even if it's just 'I re-read your fic again because I like it so much.'

This is a good challenge, and it's one I try to do as well. As a writer I love getting hearts as comments, keysmashes, everything, so I try not to put too much pressure on myself to write a full essay on a story (even if I liked it a lot!). Sometimes I can, but sometimes hitting kudos and a "thank you for writing this! I love it!" is all I've got that day, and I shouldn't beat myself up about it.

Yes ...

>>And every time I re-read a fic I've already read, I leave a comment, even if it's just 'I re-read your fic again because I like it so much.'<<

This author would like to confirm that this type of comment is super awesome, even if it is nothing more than "I reread this for the 3rd time."

I love this! Even if you don't know what to say, you can literally say that! "I loved this story to the point where I honestly don't even know what to say" is totally a compliment and one I'm sure many authors would love to receive. (I know I would!)

Anything you have to say isn't trite or stupid. 😉

Good luck with your challenge!

As a writer, I can tell you that even a comment of a simple Good Job! is greatly appreciated. If you feel like adding more you can always pick something out of the story that you particularly liked. You don't have to worry that someone will find your comment trite. I don't know a writer that doesn't appreciate it when someone takes the time to say good job in whatever form that takes.

And I'm going to take up your challenge and make a point of practicing what I preach. I'm guilty of hitting the kudos button and not always leaving a comment. That is going to stop. Thank you for reminding me that I should have been doing this all along.

I often do exactly the same with comments - I faff and dither then don't bother as I think it is going to sound stupid.

Good luck with the challenge :)

This is an excellent challenge. On my own works I love to get any kind of "Good job" or "I'm re-reading this because I love it so much" comment ♥

yay for comments! Giving them, you never know where they might lead. I hope you get at least one 'I never would have thought my comment would lead to this' moment this year! :)

I like this! I also tend to leave a lot of kudos, but not so many comments on AO3. Especially lately, because I'm reading old fics from and old fandom, and I start wondering if it makes sense to leave a comment on something that was written 10 years ago, if the author is even going to see it etc. I should probably think less and comment more!

As a writer, one of my absolute favorite comments to read is "I re-read your fic again because I like it so much." It speaks volumes and always makes me feel awesome.

Yes! I suspect people mostly leave kudos because (a) it's quick, and (b) they think it's basically the same as saying "Good job" or "I really liked this". Only it's not, is it? Even a brief comment is so much more satisfying to receive.

(I'm just as bad, mind you. That little button is just so easy.)

Best challenge! I'm going to have to challenge myself to read things, just so I can too leave comments. ♥ ♥

Great challenge! I get the fear of wondering if your comment is enough but it is good that you want to try. And getting a 'I'm rereading this for the x time" is definitely one of the best compliments. :D

I know in my head that the author probably wouldn't think it's trite or stupid, and would be glad to receive the comment.

So, listen, I aeem to be pretty much the only author in fandom (I think) who is genuinely ambivalent about comments. I tend to have them turned off on AO3 for a low pressure, chilled out reading environment, because I don't get the endorphin hit (I think that's what it is) that others seem to from a positive comment and I don't want people to worry about it. Or I might leave them on for a little while (like for challenges and stuff) and then turn them off later.

That's context. Here's the critical bit. I have never once received a comment expressing enjoyment in the fic that I thought was trite or stupid or pointless or meaningless or any of the things that people worry about. And that didn't matter if it was a 1,500 word love letter, or a single heart emoji. "I liked this" is a lovely comment to receive, "Loved" is a lovely comment to receive, "Thank you" is a lovely comment to receive. And I say that as someone who literally isn't bothered about comments. I have no horse in this race. My readers can comment (briefly at least), lurk, kudos, do secret bookmarks, whatever they like. So, I guess what I'm saying is you're absolutely right to adopt that "hush, self, you are wrong" attitude.

Also, for the record, I'm pretty sure "I re-read your fic" is a comment that sends writers into a freaking tizz. Because, oh my god, they came back? They came back? That's possibly one of the best comments you could leave :D
