People Suck

I was enjoying my nice lovely snow day and some assholes had to ruin it. I was just minding my own business when I passed a group of people in a snowball fight. One girl threw a ball at me. Okay, fine whatever. Then the entire group starting throwing them at me. I turn around to say, "hey jerks, knock it off" and I get out "hey-" when I get BEAMED IN THE FACE by a fucking huge hard snowball and it HURT. My face still hurts and this was 20 minutes ago. Does anyone come to see if I'm alright, since I'm, you know, crying and my glasses fell off my face it hit me so hard? NO THEY JUST LAUGH AND RUN AWAY. So I yelled, through my tears, "FUCK YOU ASSHOLES I HATE ALL OF YOU EAT ME YOU SONS OF BITCHES" and left. Some girls further down were nice enough to let me into their dorm bathroom to check out the damage. So at least not EVERYONE turns into a raging douche bag when there's snow on the ground.

Fuck you assholes. Thanks for ruining my snow day. Blah.

Oh that crazy Alabama weather...

FYI:
Yesterday, I got woken up at 7:45am by a tornado warning siren. Then it rained so hard that there were some streets flooded. After that, I went back to bed until about noon, and woke up to 70 degree weather and moderately sunny.
Today, I woke up and it is 32 degrees and SNOWING. HARD. We currently have 2in and it's still going. Not gonna stop for another 3-4 hours, at least. Also, it is the first day of MARCH.

Love that wacky wacky Alabama weather!

Writer's Block: Fearsome

The boogeyman, global thermonuclear war, being forced to eat broccoli—there's a lot to be afraid of when you're a kid. What was your biggest childhood fear?

Ursula from The Little Mermaid scared me so much I couldn't watch that movie for YEARS. Seriously. I like her now though. I have a little figurine of her on my desk (but sometimes I have to turn it away because it has a creepy grin). I also had to move her away from my Buddha because she was giving him bad vibes.
I used to be afraid to sleep by myself in the dark in a room. I thought something was in my closet or under my bed. I slept in the bed with my mom most of the time until I was in middle school. This was especially spooky during the times when we lived with my grandmother out in the middle of nowhere. When we lived in town, it wasn't such a big deal due to street lights and things. I still don't like to sleep with my feet hanging off the end of the bed (which is hard because I'm really tall!).
I was and still am the biggest baby when it comes to scary movies. The only ones I'm NOT scared of are zombie movies. Think of a scary movie and I've probably either seen it and had to sleep with a light on for two weeks after, or refused to watch it so that didn't happen.

As for now, the only thing I'm scared of, besides typical girly bug fears (and the previously mentioned horror movies), is dummies and puppets that are anthropomorphic. AKA things which look human but aren't. Chuckie definitely falls into this category. I can deal with mannequins if they don't have heads (although when Doctor Who had that episode where all the mannequins came to life and killed people, it really didn't help). Ventriloquist dummies are the worst things for me. Their creepy mouths and eyes... eesh. Also, Japanese puppet theater creeps me the fuck out; we watched a video for it once in my Lit class (we were reading a Japanese puppet play and the instructor wanted us to visualize it) and I sat in the back of the class cowering the whole time. Sesame Street doesn't freak me out because they are all like animals basically, not humans.
Oddly, clowns do not scare me (unless they are chainsaw-wielding clowns that chase you at haunted houses, of course).

Writer's Block: Seven

Which of the seven deadly sins—sloth, greed, lust, gluttony, anger, envy, and pride—are you most likely to commit?

Lust :D, and then gluttony (mmmm foooood). I'm not very greedy, angry, envious, or prideful, but I do occasionally get some sloth in there. I'm not exceptionally slothful/lazy though, I work out a few times a week.

Also, as I was searching for jobs and internships and stuff, I discovered that Rutgers has two study abroad programs in Kenya 1 at Koobi Fora (paleoanthropology, homo habilis and such) and 1 studying primatology!!!! OMG!! I want to do one of these SO BAD. I would seriously take out another loan and be in debt up to my eyeballs if I could do this. The deadline is not until about April 1, so I would have time to apply for a loan before then right? One is mid-July to mid August and the other is the entire month of August. Seriously this is SO COOL. WHY did I not know about this until now???? I emailed them to find out exactly what I would need to do to be eligible for this because OMG SERIOUSLY THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME. I didn't even know something like this existed!
If this doesn't pan out, I also found some week-long forensic and osteology courses at UT-Knoxville (where they have the Body Farm) and a place in Pennsylvania, that cost the same amount and those would be pretty cool too. They are both in July as well. They are basically open until they fill up with 25 people, so that's the back-up plan.
Damn my stupid lack of monetary funding for these kinds of thing! My life would suck so much less if I wasn't so damn poor! (oops there's the envy and greed coming out I guess)

In other news,
Heroes was AWESOME Monday night. Seriously.
SpoilersCollapse )

PS The Heroes superbowl commercial where they are playing football against the NFL players is hilarious! If you haven't seen it, look it up on youtube.

School to do for the rest of this month:
2/11- Africana Studies quiz 2 (need to read ch 10 in African Americans book)
2/12- Research Simone de Beauvoir for Women's Studies
2/17- First exam in Cultural Geography on ch's 1-3
2/19- Midterm in Culture, Marriage and Family
- Also, First paper due in Women's studies
2/26- Midterm in Women's studies
Sometime in February, likely the week of 2/16-20, first exam in North American Indians

Ugh, business as usual I guess. I'm also researching jobs, internships, etc. as I said before, and working at my on-campus job, AND doing UPC and Anthro society stuff. Oh, and I have to take the GRE sometime before May. Hooray!

BTW, my women's studies paper is going to be epically amazing. I'm totally going to rock Dr. Albrecht's world. One of topics she gave us was "Choose several women's magazines and analyze the illustrations, ads, topics covered, and the texts. Draw conclusions about the assumptions the editors make about the audience of these magazines, that is, the women who buy and read them. Also consider the reasons why women buy these magazines."
My idea is to examine women's magazines targeted at different age groups. I picked Seventeen, Glamour, and Redbook to represent teenagers, 20's, and 30-40's, respectively. It really is amazing what you can decipher when you really look at these mags. The ads are very interesting... there are so many anti-aging creams even in Glamour, but especially in Redbook! It is also obvious who the magazines are targeted at by who they put on the cover (this month it is some chick from Gossip Girls on Seventeen, Eva Longoria on Glamour, and Julianne Moore on Redbook).

In other news, I think I've lost some more weight, according to the scale at the gym I have (it's telling me 167.something every time) but my scale at home is still saying 169-170. So I am unsure which to believe. It may also have to do with that I weigh at the gym in the morning when I finish working out and usually don't weigh at home except at night. Hmm... confusing! I personally don't feel any lighter, I've been a little slacking on my diet lately too, so I think the gym scale is lying to me. However, I have been doing crunches and stuff, and going to pilates once a week, so maybe that extra muscle is burning me some extra calories too. I dunno!

So that is about all for my update today!
See ya laterrrr

Writer's Block: Opposites Attract

What celebrity would you consider changing your sexual identity for?

Angelina Jolie. Hands down. I would go lez for her in a second. Also, Keira Knightley.

PS This video is fucking awesome and I don't even watch Lost anymore! (Thanks Jen!)

1. Hahaha, ohnotheydidnt is apparently on life support right now because they have reached 16.8 million comments which made the LJ server crash and burn for the comm the other day. NICE, LJ, very nice.

2. Amy Winehouse no longer looks like she's death's BFF. Which is good, because I like her and don't want her to die. I'd rather she was drunk and high on weed all the time now than smoking crack and shooting up heroin. She was FUNNY when she was drunk and weed-high all the time before, when she was on crack, it was just sad (and she looked like she would keel over at any second). She also has gained some weight back so she doesn't have the crack addict body anymore either (the weed probably helped with that).

3. I took a nap today starting at 5:30pm and accidentally didn't wake up til 8:30... oops. Guess I'm gonna be awake for a while.

4. I totally rocked my Africana Studies test yesterday, for shiz. Also, my group presentation in Culture, Marriage and Family went really well today too. We made up a game for the class to play that involved the different types of marriage transactions (bridewealth, dowry, bride theft, etc). It was really fun, everyone liked it.

5. There was a pop quiz in my Cultural Geography class this morning on a chapter I hadn't read but I still think I did fairly well because alot of it was stuff I already knew (incl. a question about Julian Steward's theory of multilinear evolution, which I totally did a presentation about in an anthro. class last semester... Score 1 for the anthropology major!).

6. Going to order graduation invitations, cap and gown, and grad. pictures tomorrow!! Crazy! Still don't know what I'm going to do, but am looking for jobs all over the place.

ETA: 7. I have lost 6 pounds, but it seems to have stagnated a little bit. I'm working on it, though; been trying to intensify the cardio and such so as not to plateau too much. But I already reached my goal for January (5lbs) so I have plenty of time to reach my goal for February (10lbs).

Writer's Block: Back to School

What fictional high school—from tv, film, or a book—would you most like to attend? Or would you rather never go near high school again, fictional or otherwise?

My first thought was "high school oh god, never again". But maybe Sunnydale high. I grew up watching and loving Buffy when I was in middle and high school and wanting to go there. I totes would've been friends with Willow and Xander, no doubt.
Hogwarts would be cool too. I got into HP after Buffy, but I was still young (14) and in high school at the time. So, it definitely would've been really cool go to these schools when I was that age. But if I never set foot in another high school again now, it'll be too soon. I already have waaaaaaaaaaay too much drama in my life right now, to even think about high school.

(no subject)

Soooo...
I had a good Christmas. Yummy food all around. Saw the fam, who are as crazy as usual. Here is what I got:
From my mom/"santa":
-The Dark Knight and Kung Fu Panda DVDs
-a crapload of candy
-3 gift cards ($15 each to Wendy's and Coldstone creamery, $10 to Burger King... the Wendy's one is almost gone already lol.)
-a baby chimp toy that makes real chimp sounds and moves around. It's SO adorable! (pics on facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?…)
-windshield wipers
-a cell phone charger for the car (!)
-a Ped Egg (one of those "as seen on tv" scrubber things for your feet)

From myself:
-a 2gb memory card for the camera (only SEVEN DOLLARS on amazon!)
-a London city guide book from Lonely Planet

From my cousin and aunt:
-A giant Eiffel Tower statuette thing (it's heavy as shit, and kind of huge. It's about 18in tall)
-a nice smelling candle (called "Paris Nights")
-a shotglass from Las Vegas (my cousin went on a trip there in November. also, pretty convenient, because I got her one from when I went to San Fran in Nov too lol.)

Speaking of San Francisco, I just realized that I did not make a post about that on here before. It was really awesome! There are pictures on facebook (here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?… and here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?…). I met alot of cool people and learned alot of stuff by attending paper presentations and such. It left me feeling like I'm NOT actually going to be living on the street for the rest of my life, considering the 8000 other anthropologists that were there who aren't. So hooray! Also explored the city and saw the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury area, Lombard St, the Wharf (far too touristy for my tastes), and had some FABULOUS Indian food. All in all, a great experience for my first trip to California!

Heroes and new years meme

So um, Heroes was basically BALLIN'Collapse )

Anyone who HASN'T seen the video of the guy throwing a shoe at Bush needs to go youtube it RIGHT NOW because it is the FUNNIEST SHIT EVER. You go journalist dude!

Also since I don't anticipate anymore outstanding achievements in the next two weeks before January, I'm going to do the new years meme now.
1. What was your proudest accomplishment in 2008?
-Making the Dean's list in the spring after the semester from HELL. Also, FINALLY getting to go to Europe.
2. What was (were) your New Year's resolution(s) for 2008? Did you reach it?
-I usually don't make resolutions but I think my only one for 2008 was that it be better than 2007 was, which was a year that completely SUCKED. So, I accomplished that one, as 2008 was moderately interesting and not so much with the suckage.
3. What is (are) your resolution(s) for 2009?
-Lose weight. I'm serious about this one. Not even that much, really, just like 15 pounds and I would look and probably feel soooo much better. My school is sponsoring this thing called Eat Less to Feed More, starting January (only $25 to join, money goes to feed poor people, thus the name) and you get a physical and stuff included. Plus if you accomplish you goal weight loss by the end of April, you get a prize or something.
-graduate! Just have to make it through one more semester and I'm done with college FOREVER!!!
That's about it. I really have to crack down on the weight though. It's getting a bit ridiculous lately.

Writer's Block: Untimely Passing

RIP John Lennon. The list of sudden and unexpected celebrity deaths is long—Princess Di, Heath Ledger, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe, and many more. Which one affected you the most on an emotional level?

Out of the ones listed, Princess Di and Heath Ledger.

I was just nearly 9 when Diana died, but I had been a HUGE fan of hers for a while. I read books about her and watched shows about her on tv whenever they came on. I loved all the dresses she wore, I even did a project about her once for school. When they had her funeral on tv, I cried so much. I remember very specifically when the Princes went up and Harry put the letter on the coffin that said Mummy.

I think Heath Ledger's death affected me so much because it was so sudden and unexpected. He was so young, younger than I had even realized (27, if you didn't know). I was a big fan of his movies since A Knight's Tale came out back when I was in middle school. I remember my mom and I going to see it in theaters, I think I was in 8th grade, and we both got such a kick out of it. I had this huge poster of him from that movie that was up in my room all through high school and in my dorm freshman year too. (it finally started falling apart the end of freshman year so I threw it away... how I wish I hadn't, now!)

I was also really excited to see him in The Dark Knight since the trailer for that had just come out about a month earlier and it looked SO COOL. I was a little apprehensive of Heath playing the Joker when I first heard about the casting, but after the trailer I was convinced and even more excited to see it! And then, one day in January I get up and turn the tv on and all that's on is news of his death. I was shocked. I really couldn't believe it... a drug overdose? And what about his poor kid?? I sent my friend Sonia, who I also knew to be a big fan of his, a text message saying, "Have you heard about Heath Ledger?" She didn't reply to me at first but then a couple hours later sent me a text back saying, "I can't believe it... what happened???"

As for other celebrity deaths, I wasn't born when John Lennon or Marilyn Monroe died, and I was just a tot (about 4 or 5) when Kurt Cobain died and barely remember anything from it other than it being on the news a lot. Plus I had no idea who he was or anything about Nirvana at the time since I was so young, so I didn't pay any attention to it. But knowing what I know now about all of them, they are definitely people who died before their time, for sure. It's fairly certain that all of them would still be living today (maybe not Marilyn since she'd be rather old) if their lives hadn't been taken through unnatural means, and I think we can all agree that the world would be a more interesting place (and we'd have more awesome music) if they were still around today.
