IQ Tests. Thoughts?

I'm fully aware of the fact that some people care about this more than others, but I mean, we're in a comm about being a personality type so maybe some of us would like to discuss other psych tests, too.

Basically I just found out my score for the WAIS-IV after not having taken an official IQ test for...years now, and I'm meh about results.  Being an NT type supposedly correlates with above-average/beyond intelligence, and I was wondering, what do you guys have to say about your IQ?  Or, if not that, your intelligence, or intelligence in general? :D

There's no such thing as a perfect person but...

This is an introductory post from a long-time lurker.

I was watching 10 Things I Hate About You (the series, not the movie) the other day because I like Kat's character. There was one episode where she gets criticised for being perfect which got me thinking (she's not an INTJ but definitely an N). Have you ever been called perfect? Have you ever considered somebody in real life perfect? What about other people's perceptions of fictional INTJs?

It puzzled me when two schoolmates called me perfect. Where do you think this perceived perfection comes from? Is it the fact that we judge like there's no tomorrow and are sure of ourselves? Is it the fact that we don't give a rat's ass about what others think and become obsessed with getting something done?
Huh?

Te vs Ti?

I'm very interested in Myers Briggs but have mostly focused on the main four letters of the 16 types. I'm now curious about the other functions but a bit confused by them as well. I know as INTJ's we have extroverted thinking. But what does that mean? Being that thinking is internal and in your brain I'd think it could only be introverted. Or does it mean we say our ideas out loud like, "Did you ever consider that blah blah blah?" "You know I was thinking." That type of thing? My husband is INTP and I know we have opposite traits and it's funny talking about them and trying to figure out why it's different for us, but we're both a little confused on some of these points.

The life and times of the Promethean

Edit June 11, 2007: Keirsey (KTS) uses the term "Promethean" as a term to describe the NT types.
http://keirsey.com/knownrationals.…

Reviewing the Greek myths, I thought it was a pretty good description of the type.

---------------------------------------------------------------
From Robert Graves: The Greek Myths: 1
Chapter 39: Atlas and Prometheus

"e. Prometheus, being wiser than Atlas, foresaw the issue of the rebellion against Cronus, and therefore preferred to fight on Zeus's side, persuading Epimethius to do the same. He was, indeed, the wisest of his race, and Athene, at whose birth from Zeus's head he had assisted, taught him architecture, astronomy, mathematics, navigation, medicine, metallurgy, and other useful arts, which he passed on to mankind. But Zeus, who had decided to extirpate the whole race of man, and spared them only at Prometheus's urgent plea, grew angry at their increasing powers and talents."
"f. One day, when a dispute took place at Sicyon, as to which portions of a sacrificial bull should be offered to the gods, and which should be reserved for men, Prometheus was invited to act as arbiter... One bag contained all the flesh, but this he concealed beneath the stomach, which is the least tempting part of any animal; and the other contained the bones, hidden beneath a rich layer of fat. When he offered Zeus the choice of either, Zeus, easily deceived, chose the bag containing the bones and fat (which are still the divine portion); but punished Prometheus, who was laughing at him behind his back, by withholding fire from mankind. 'Let them eat their flesh raw!' he cried."
Yay

Online vs. RealLife enthusiasm

Since some got to commenting on the apparent bounciness of the INTP asking about her ex, it struck me that although I'm sedate bordering on catatonic in real life, I do a shitload of *bounce* and "wheee" and "woo hoo" and *Snoopy dance* and *claps hands and jumps up and down* online. I suspect I come across as a far more enthusiastic personality on message boards and the like than I do when met over an umbrella-free drink.

Do you find yourself doing the same?

mind games

I own a 'game'. It is a set of covered metal boards and a huge pile of small magnetic coloured squares. The squares are used to create patterns, pictures and messages on the boards. I think my board had a dragon on it the last time I looked. This 'game' is very much like the magnetic poetry that was so popular a few years back except it uses colours not words. Eventually I will destroy my dragon. First I'll clear a space on the board. At this point there will still be recognizable bits of dragon around the newly created space. Then I will start pulling individual squares from what used to be the dragon and rearranging them in the open space. At this point I have dragon bits that are becoming less recognizable as such and a collection of odd shapes that are becoming more coherent but still not recognizable. This continues until it reaches a magical point where the new pattern coalleses into something recognizable. This is the "Eureaka" point. At this point there may or may not be recognizable bits of dragon left over. The remaining squares are used to refine the new picture. Sometimes there are squares left over.

That is the best analogy I can come up with as to how my mind works when it is rearranging its self.

Does anybody else's mind work like this? Do you feel it happening? Are you aware of the process in progress? Could this be an iN thing?

It doesn't disturb me when my mind does this. It just means that things are going to change again. Still, the unconcious rearranging of one's own mind is a strange thing to be aware of.

Comparing philosophies...

Just feel like comparing philosophy with my fellow INTJs, half out of boredom, half out of curiosity. So, I think I'll ask some general philosphical questions, and post my own concise anwers.

First, how do you find or create meaning in life? I myself am an agnostic existentialist. I think that we should choose our own meaning in life, and not wait for some god or society to do so for us. My specific existential meaning is to enjoy myself, make the world a better place (at my own, comfortable pace, of course), and work towards equality and justice.

Second, what is your political philosophy? I am something of an anarchist (not the childish "DOWN WITH EVERYTHING!!! BLACK FLAGS AND CHAOS EVERYWHERE!!!1!1!" type, but the "I think the world would be freer and happier without lots of government" type). Although I believe that people should be free to live without a government; I also believe that people should be free to organize themselves in whatever way they feel fit, government or none, unless they hurt others. I believe in something called the "harm principle," which essentially means that one should be free to do whatever one wants, so long as they don't hurt others.

Third, what is your spiritual philosophy? I am an agnostic. I don't know if a god exists or not, and think that it will be very difficult/impossible to ever find out for sure. I'm not too concerned though: If the god(s) of the universe thought that us believing in and knowing them was important, they would actually show themselves quite unambiguously.

Finally, name five things that you are. I am:
Arocoun.
a Green Anarchist.
independant.
fair.
a true lover of nature.

Who knows? This might be interesting/fun...

Methods of arguing

I know that each Type has a different method of arguing and I've noticed that when certain types argue with each other their methods of arguing seem to be especially incompatable.

Example:
I (INTJ) have a very good ENxP friend whom I love discussing abstract topics with however I've noticed that when we discuss we have very particular habits. I tend to analyse, disect and focus on the differences in our points of view. He tends to seek consensus, expand and focus on the commonalities in our points of view. However interesting this is, it sometimes leads to arguements where he tries will gloss over points of disagreement where I will focus on them. He will get upset that I don't agree and/or I'll get upset that he won't acknowledge differences. He'll take my disagreement as a danger to our friendship... reacting with a "see we both are really on the same side" stance which infuriates me. I on the otherhand will continue to nail at a point until I think it has been heard and acknowledged (I don't require agreement) and when I do this I tend to forget that he's sensitive. Amazingly we are still excellent friends.

My questions are:

1) How do you argue? How do you see other types arguing?
2) Do you think that particular type combos are more prone to disagreements based on how they instinctively argue?
3) Have you had a similar experience to mine? How did you deal with it?

(This post was partly inspired by an "discussion" on ntpersonality community. Unfortunatly for him somebody's post got toasted by a roving band of female INTJs. :p )

Livejournal trends

Hey there!

Someone on my friends list posted this link today.  It's a program that downloads your journal (nice to have a backup what with their little blackout the other day)...however in addition to the simple archive feature, it's got some really cool plugins.

The RIA plugin does a word analysis of your journal against the general population.  For instance, one of my top topics is "abstraction", wherein I'm in the 94.5th percentile against everyone, and 92.7th against my age group.

In terms of emotions, 59% positive affect, 91% anxiety, 65% sadness, 68% affection, 21% aggression, and 57% expressive behavior.

I scored highest in the secondary category (talking about abstraction and social stuff), followed by the primary (id stuff) with emotions last.

My "defensive symbolism" was at 20%.

It shows a lot more but those are the ones I thought were more interesting in terms of this community..I thought it might be interesting to see if a general pattern develops all of us in the community.  So if you choose to check the program out, report back and tell us how your journal relates!

Entertainment

As INTJs we are supposed to be unusual (warped?) in our sense of humour amongst other things. This raises the question... What types of entertainment do you like in terms of books/comics/music/movies? dislike?

How are we different from other types in our choices?

(I'm asking this partly because I'm curious and partly to get ideas.)

Collapse )

So, overall, I prefer complexity, speculation, irony/cynicism, imagination, and good craftmanship in my entertainment. I tend to avoid excessive emotional displays (especially embaressment), cuteness, predictability, and chicken-soup.
